Qantas supermoon flight to nowhere sells out in 'record time'

(CNN) — Qantas is offering a new "flight to nowhere" that will give travel-starved Australian residents the chance to admire the late May supermoon and full lunar eclipse from over 40,000 feet in the sky.

If you were hoping to nab tickets, you're out of luck -- the airline says they were snapped up in "record time" -- 2.5 minutes to be exact.

The supermoon flight is the latest in a series of Qantas-operated trips that take travelers up for a joy ride, before returning them right back to where they came from.

Tickets for the supermoon flight started at AUS $499 for an economy ticket (US $386), while business class was on sale for $1,499 a pop (US $1,160).

After tickets sold out, a wait list was also created, but this has since closed.

Olympia Dukakis: Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias star dies aged 89

US actress Olympia Dukakis, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck, has died aged 89, her family have announced.

Her brother wrote she was "at peace" after suffering ill health.

Dukakis had a long and distinguished career in theatre, both as a performer and as a director.

But in her 50s she starred in a series of hit comedies on screen, including an award-winning turn as Cher's mother in Moonstruck.

That run - in the late 1980s - also included roles in Steel Magnolias, Working Girl and Look Who's Talking.

Other key roles were as a secondary school head teacher in 1995's Mr Holland's Opus and as a transgender landlady in the TV series Tales of the City, whose fourth series premiered on Netflix in 2019.

"My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City," Apollo Dukakis wrote on Facebook.

“Today the nation lost a true pioneer and lifelong advocate for exploration in astronaut Michael Collins. As pilot of the Apollo 11 command module – some called him ‘the loneliest man in history’ – while his colleagues walked on the Moon for the first time, he helped our nation achieve a defining milestone. He also distinguished himself in the Gemini Program and as an Air Force pilot.

“Michael remained a tireless promoter of space. ‘Exploration is not a choice, really, it’s an imperative,’ he said. Intensely thoughtful about his experience in orbit, he added, ‘What would be worth recording is what kind of civilization we Earthlings created and whether or not we ventured out into other parts of the galaxy.’

“His own signature accomplishments, his writings about his experiences, and his leadership of the National Air and Space Museum helped gain wide exposure for the work of all the men and women who have helped our nation push itself to greatness in aviation and space. Helen McCrory: Peaky Blinders actress dies aged 52, husband Damian Lewis says

Actress Helen McCrory, known for her roles in Peaky Blinders and three Harry Potter films, has died of cancer at the age of 52, according to her husband, the actor Damian Lewis.

He said he was "heartbroken", and that she was a "beautiful and mighty woman".

He wrote: "She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you."

Harry Potter author JK Rowling led the tributes, writing that it was "simply heartbreaking news".

McCrory was also known for her long and acclaimed career on stage, and the National Theatre's artistic director Rufus Norris said she was "unquestionably one of the great actors of her generation".

BBC director of drama Piers Wenger echoed that, saying: "Helen was one of the finest actresses this country will ever see."

A passenger collapsed at Heathrow Airport following a 'seven-hour wait' as travellers are forced to queue up due to coronavirus checks at the border, it has been claimed.

Around 800 border staff are working at Heathrow and that all are currently in work subject to the normal reasons for absence, according to the Immigration Services Union (ISU).

Spokeswoman Lucy Moreton earlier told MailOnline the queues are taking so long because travellers cannot use eGates due to the government requirement to check 100 per cent compliance with Covid-19 border restrictions.

Footage posted online on Monday afternoon shows a woman lying on the floor of Heathrow Airport being tended to by staff - as many more passengers wait to be cleared through the border.

The video's uploader claims the woman had collapsed following a seven-hour wait for entry clearance.

Travellers often arrived at the airport without the right documentation and that pre-pandemic a non-contentious entry for someone with the right of residence would have been two minutes if they did not use the eGates.

Post-pandemic with the right paperwork, that transaction time is five minutes, the ISU representative alleged - and that without the right paperwork that time shoots up to at least 30 minutes.

Ms Moreton said: 'The Government can choose two routes. Either remove the requirement for 100 per cent checks, with all the attendant risk to national Covid security. Or compel carriers to ensure that no one arrives in the UK without having complied with the relevant requirements.'

Chris Garton, the chief solutions officer for the London airport, has told MPs 'the situation is becoming untenable', with wait times in recent days being 'well in excess of two hours and up to six hours'.

Giving evidence to the Commons Transport Select Committee, he warned: 'We're starting to see disruption in some of the arriving passengers. If you're made to queue for two or three hours, it's not something you want to do, and we're even having to involve the police service to help us.'

Mr Garton went on: 'What's happened is a whole host of new checks - 100 per cent checking of everybody - has been introduced, and that obviously has put a tremendous burden on the officers who work at the border. The Home Office has not provided them with additional officers.'

JOHOR BARU: The state-of-the-art Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football club’s Sultan Ibrahim Stadium will host Malaysia's first Spartan Stadion on Sept 3 and 4.

The Spartan Stadion is a 5km, 20-obstacle race through the world’s most famous pro sports stadiums.

Officially opened in February last year, the iconic home of the Southern Tigers was also bestowed the Stadium of the Year award by StadiumDB.com, enhancing the JDT brand internationally.

Now, the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium is set to be among a select few stadiums around the world chosen to host the internationally renowned Spartan Stadion.

The club said in a statement on Tuesday (April 13) that the Spartan Stadion truly demonstrates JDT's ability to attract interest and collaborations with international brands.

“Among the other brands associated with JDT include Unicef, Nike, Hublot, SWAG Electric Vehicles and Subway.

“Association with international brands further expands JDT's brand value and exposure globally, and this translates to revenue through sponsorships because the bigger the JDT brand, the bigger the return on investment for sponsors, ” the statement read.

The statement also said JDT's reach through social media, among the most extensive in South-East Asia, also provides international brands more exposure.

It added that the Southern Tigers are setting a good example to other clubs in the region on how a progressive management with a clear vision can help grow a brand internationally. JDT is just eight years old.

“As for the Spartan Stadion, it will appeal to a wider crowd domestically and internationally.

ENTIRE AIRBUS A350 FLEET WILL BE RETIRED.

LATAM has just announced that its entire Airbus A350 fleet will be retired.

LATAM Brazil currently operates a fleet of 11 Airbus A350-900, and the company’s CEO has today announced plans for those planes to be retired effective immediately.

LATAM Airlines Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020, just months after Delta Air Lines purchased a 20% stake in the South American airline conglomerate.

Due to the current bankruptcy proceedings, the airline needs to cut costs and streamline its fleet, and apparently that’s coming at the expense of the A350. LATAM Brazil took delivery of its first A350 back in 2016, and the average age of this fleet is just three years.

The airline originally had over two dozen of these planes on order (including some A350-1000s), but almost half of those orders were canceled in 2020 (and Delta paid $62 million to undo a deal by which the airline was supposed to take over LATAM’s remaining A350 commitments).

For what it’s worth, the A350s were a legacy order from TAM, from before the airline merged with LAN (with the latter airline having ordered 787s). It seems like LATAM never fully had a need for the A350s — the planes had been leased to other carriers, and the airline was even looking to get out of this commitment pre-pandemic. - ONEMILEATATIME.COM

A Batik Air shuttle bus crashed into Batik Air’s Airbus A320neo at Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport.
The Airbus A320neo with registration PK-BDP was parked when the crew bus collided with its nose. This incident was confirmed by the Head of Public Relations, Director General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation Budi Prayitno.

“Yes (there was indeed an incident). So that is the vehicle for the executive passenger transportation, crashing into the nose of the plane,” said Budi on Sunday, April 4th.

Budi did not explain the chronology of the incident that occurred on Saturday (3/4/2021) yesterday. The Ministry of Transportation, he said, was investigating the incident. However, he didn’t mention whether the shuttle bus carried passengers or not.

'Choice Between Disinvestment or Closing Down': Hardeep Puri Announces 100% Privatisation of Air India

union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday announced that Air India will be completely disinvested and added that the choice is only between disinvestment or closing down the airline company.

“We’ve decided that Air India will be 100% disinvested. Choice isn’t between disinvestment and non-disinvestment, it’s between disinvestment and closing down. Air India is a first-rate asset but has an accumulated debt of Rs 60,000 Crore. We need to draw the slate clean” Hardeep Singh Puri said.

The union minister on Friday said that the government is looking at a new timeline for Air India disinvestment and financial bids will be invited in the coming days.

“In the last meeting, on Monday, it was decided that the shortlisted bidders (for Air India disinvestment) be informed that the bids have to come in within 64 days…This time the Govt is determined and there is no hesitation,” he said. He added that the disinvestment process is likely to be completed by May or June.

The government has started the process to sell its entire 100 per cent stake in Air India that has been in losses since it merged with Indian Airlines in 2007. “…There is no choice, we either privatise or we close the airline. We run a loss of Rs 20 crore every day despite Air India making money now. Because the mismanagement has resulted in a cumulative debt of Rs 60,000 crore,” Puri had said on Friday.

“I don’t have the capacity to keep going to Nirmala ji and say please give me some money,” he said in an apparent reference to seeking funds to run Air India from the finance minister. He also noted that earlier attempts at Air India privatisation were not successful because the attempts were half-hearted. - NEWS18.COM

Everything to know about Paramount Plus, ViacomCBS’s new version of CBS All Access

In just over a week, CBS All Access will become Paramount Plus, a rebranded version of the streaming service launching on March 4th.

Paramount Plus will use combined franchises and assets from Viacom and CBS (who remerged in 2019) to offer more than 20,000 episodes of television and films from a number of networks. These networks and studios include BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures. Every announcement made today can be read on ViacomCBS’ site.

The streaming service will launch at two separate pricing tiers: an ad-supported version that includes full breadth of Paramount movies, Paramount Plus originals, a “massive portion of library,” according to streaming CEO Tom Ryan, and current seasons of CBS shows for $4.99. This is launching in June. The premium tier will have live sports supplemented with even more options, live CBS news feeds, and a live CBS TV experience for $9.99. The company will have more information about bundle options “soon,” according to Ryan.

Customers on premium CBS All Access plans should just automatically roll into Paramount Plus. By the time the ad-supported version of Paramount Plus launches, the $5.99 CBS All Access plan will no longer be offered, but existing customers on that plan will be grandfathered into All Access.

SO WHAT DOES THAT GET PEOPLE?
Let’s start with TV fans. Paramount Plus will carry a number of older popular shows, like SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as new originals based around popular franchises like Criminal Minds and The Godfather. Nickelodeon is launching an Avatar Studios to make more TV series and films based on the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Nickelodeon fans, Paramount Plus is also working on a live-action Dora the Explorer series and a live-action Fairly OddParents show.

Some of the original series announced today include a new Frasier revival with Kelsey Grammer set to reprise his role as Dr. Frasier Crane, and several series based on popular Paramount movies, including The Italian Job, Flashdance, and Fatal Attraction. A Criminal Minds revival — and all 15 seasons of the original CBS crime procedural — will also stream exclusively on Paramount Plus. Prince Philip, 99, in hospital 'as a precaution'

The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital on Tuesday evening "as a precautionary measure" after feeling unwell, Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip, 99, was taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in central London, the statement added.

A palace source told the BBC the duke travelled by car to the hospital, where he was admitted on his doctor's advice.

He had been feeling unwell for a few days, but it was not related to coronavirus, the source added.

They said the duke - who is due to celebrate his 100th birthday on 10 June - was "in good spirits" in hospital, where he is expected to remain for a few days of observation and rest.

The Queen, 94, has remained at Windsor Castle. Earlier, she spoke by telephone with the First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin, about the work of the Royal Navy at home and abroad.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall also carried out official duties on Wednesday, visiting the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham to speak to patients and NHS staff. - BBC

Embattled Air Namibia recalls fleet and ceases operations

Struggling African carrier Air Namibia is cancelling all flights from 11 February, and returning its fleet to its Windhoek base.

The cessation of operations for the troubled flag-carrier comes eight months after the Namibian president, Hage Geingob, told the country’s parliament that the airline should be liquidated.

Geingob had made the declaration after delivering a state-of-the nation speech in early June 2020.

Air Namibia has disclosed that “all flight operations will be cancelled” with effect from 11 February, and that its aircraft will be flown back to its base.

“The reservation system for taking new bookings is also suspended,” it says, through its official social media channel, directing passengers to contact its call centre for refunds.

Air Namibia’s collapse has emerged two days after Geingob spoke at a virtual ceremony to mark the re-opening of parliament on 9 February, declaring 2021 to be the “year of resilience”.

He underlined the difficulties facing the country as a result of the pandemic, adding that the government has had to make “extraordinary sacrifices” to mitigate its effects.

“Lockdowns and curfews have been put in place, schools and businesses have been closed, and revenue-generating activities have been curtailed,” he said.

“All of these factors have impacted our economy and most notably, the Namibian people, many of whom have lost their businesses, jobs and ultimately, their livelihoods.”

Air Namibia has been operating a small fleet comprising Airbus A330-200s, A319s and Embraer ERJ-135s. - flightglobal

Ajax goalkeeper Onana given 12-month ban for doping violation

UEFA has banned Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana for 12 months for a doping violation, just days after the club's record signing Sebastien Haller was mistakenly left off their Europa League list.

Following a drugs test on Oct. 30 last year, the substance Furosemide was found in Onana's urine. The suspension is effective immediately and applies to all footballing activities, both national and international.

Onana has said that he mistakenly took a Lasimac tablet prescribed to his wife after feeling unwell.

UEFA has said that Onana had no intention of cheating. However, the European Football Association states that an athlete has a duty to ensure that no prohibited substances enter their body.

"We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport," Ajax managing director Edwin van der Sar said. "This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself, but certainly also for us as a club. Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans.

"We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these twelve months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance."

Onana and Ajax will appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The news comes just days after Haller, a January signing from West Ham, was not included in Ajax's list for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

It is not clear whether the error was caused by Ajax, the Dutch FA or UEFA but if the club are at fault, they will not be able to amend the situation.

Coach Erik ten Hag said: "[It is] nothing to laugh about. Very disappointing, also for the player. It's a mistake in the administration by someone. We will do everything to get him on the list. In the end [club director of football] Marc Overmars and I are responsible."

An anti-lockdown hairdresser was confronted at her salon by police amid fears she planned to ignore the law and reopen for business again

Sinead Quinn, who runs Quinn Blakey Hairdressing in Oakenshaw, near Bradford, has previously refused to close and racked up £17,000 worth of coronavirus fines.

She has been slapped with an injunction banning her from opening her doors to the public but the unfazed businesswoman hinted she would take part in the anti-lockdown campaign "Great Opening" on Saturday, Yorkshire Live reports.

In a video she said: "I mean, football players can play, but I can't earn a living.

"It's just madness."

Video footage shows Sinead parking her black Range Rover outside her shop and going inside as a police car pulls up and parks outside.

Two officers stand at the step of the salon as they speak to Sinead through the door before they are allowed inside.

Shortly afterwards the officers leave followed by Sinead who shuts the door behind her.

Earlier the mum-of-two had written on Telegram: "Hey guys, I’ve had an injunction against me. I won’t be cutting hair today but I’m gonna go open soon and clean and grab a few things.

"Police and council all over this morning. I’m just having a coffee then going back up!"

She added: "I have two little girls at home that want to see their mummy tonight and I don't fancy spending anytime in the cells on b****** charges."

She also posted a photo of a letter from Kirklees Council with details of the injunction against her.

The letter states if Sinead opens her salon she could be arrested "for the purposes of allowing members of the public to enter the... premises".

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire police told Yorkshire Live: "Police did attend at a hairdressers in Oakenshaw on Saturday.

"No Covid breaches or any other such matters were disclosed or noted."

Sinead was thrust into the media spotlight in November after she posted a notice in her salon window saying she would not be following the lockdown.

Cloris Leachman, Emmy and Oscar Winner, Dies at 94

Oscar winner and multiple Emmy winner Cloris Leachman, best remembered as the delightfully neurotic Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and her own subsequent sitcom, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 94.

“It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time,” her longtime manager Juliet Green said. “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”

The daffy, self-absorbed Phyllis, a character she claimed was close to her own persona, brought the actress two Emmys as a featured actress in a series during the mid-’70s and made Leachman a household name.

Leachman also won a supporting actress Oscar in the early part of the decade for a far different character, an embittered small-town housewife in Peter Bogdanovich’s elegiac “The Last Picture Show”; she would later reprise the role in the film’s less successful sequel “Texasville.” Both films were based on the writings of Larry McMurtry.

Overnight success for the actress, however, came only after two decades of hard work in theater, television and some films. Leachman was in her 40s when stardom finally hit.

Leachman’s pitch-perfect timing and effortlessness in comedy and her unadorned honesty in drama was the result of many years honing her craft and incorporated her own life experiences as a mother of five children (by producer George Englund).

Her open, all-American look took her through several decades in a wide variety of roles on Broadway and early television as well as more than 40 movies, where she moved easily from leading roles to character parts.

The actress won a total of eight primetime Emmys, both for drama and comedy, and one daytime Emmy.

The recurring character of Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” not only made her a TV star but also gave her time to squeeze in roles in film including “Lovers and Other Strangers,” “The People Next Door,” “WUSA” and “The Last Picture Show,” which brought her an Oscar for supporting actress in 1971 in an upset over her nominated co-star Ellen Burstyn. Two Emmys for the role of Phyllis were crowded alongside one for drama in the ABC TV movie “A Brand New Life” (1973) and led, in 1975, to her own series, which lasted a couple of seasons.

Decades later she was still working, and flying high: Leachman was a contestant on season seven of “Dancing With the Stars” in 2008, becoming, at age 82, the oldest contestant to dance on the series, and she was the grand marshal for the 2009 New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, Calif.

During the 1970s, she did well by Bogdanovich’s “Daisy Miller” and was hilarious in Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein”; she also appeared in Brooks’ “High Anxiety.” - VARIETY
