Proton As Good As BMW

Malaysia’s Proton is on par with other premium vehicle brands like BMW, Putrajaya insisted to Parliament when asked if the national carmaker has what it takes to compete with its international rivals.

In a written reply to Batu Gajah MP V. Sivakumar’s question last Thursday, the International Trade and Industry Ministry said many of Proton’s newer models display “advanced technology, high quality and performance”.

“Some Proton models even offer features of added value in terms of comfort and safety of passengers,” the ministry said in its reply.

As examples, the ministry said models like the Proton Exora, Preve, Suprima S and Iriz come complete with safety technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control System and the Electronic Stability Control.

The models also boast other features such as “whiplash protection headrests”, six airbags, safety belts and ISOFIX fittings for the installation of child safety seats, among other features that are typically offered in premium imported cars, the ministry said.

It said these characteristics, when combined with features of the “Lotus Ride and Handling”, has helped improve the standard of Proton vehicles.

It noted that the national carmaker gained international acclaim when it earned five stars from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) and Asean NCAP.

“This rating puts the Proton car models on par with other popular car makes like BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Honda,” the ministry said.
- See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia...h.vONnjiJR.dpuf

Indonesia Tuduh Malaysia

JAKARTA - INDONESIA.

Uniqlo Under Attack

Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo came under fire Tuesday for buying supplies from Chinese factories accused of putting workers at risk in unsafe conditions, with sewage on the factory floor, extremely high temperatures and poor ventilation.

The claims made by a Hong Kong-based human rights group come as the apparel chain pursues aggressive expansion plans in a bid to challenge international brands like Zara, H&M and Gap.

Uniqlo, a unit of Fast Retailing Co., said that while it had “different views on some of the issues” in the report, it had opened an investigation and acknowledged the probe by Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) “found several problems”.

SACOM accused the clothing firm, known for its cheap chic clothing basics, of buying from two suppliers in China’s southern Guangdong province that made employees work long hours for low pay in unsafe conditions.

The group, which carried out its investigation between July and November 2014, said the Uniqlo suppliers also had a tough management style and did not allow workers to voice their concerns.

“The factories have neglected work safety, putting workers at risk,” it said.

The rights group in particular cited “extremely high shop floor temperatures, dirty sewage flowing all over the floor, unsafe facilities, poor ventilation with dense cotton dust filling the air, irritating smells and high risk of electricity leakage.”

It noted that “topless workers put the heavy pigments into the hot dyeing tent without wearing any protective gear” and said its investigators “saw a number of workers falling down from the chairs while handling the knitting machines”.

“Uniqlo as the key buyer of these two factories has violated its commitment to corporate social responsibility,” SACOM said in a statement.

The group said one employee worked up to 14 hours per day, ironing between 600 and 700 shirts, for wages of 0.29 yuan ($0.05) per shirt.

SACOM has in the past carried out investigations into working conditions for employees of Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn, London Olympics suppliers, and factories that sell to Disney.

Fast Retailing said in a statement that it had opened an investigation into the allegations, and acknowledged the SACOM inspections found “several problems”.

It added, however, that it had “different views on some of the issues described in the report.”

Tuk Tuk To Be In Malaysia ?

KUALA LUMPUR - The motorised tricycle or popularly known as "tuk-tuk'' in Thailand may be making its presence on our roads as Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is mulling to introduce it as a cheaper alternative to taxi by end of the year.

It is learnt that the proposal for motorised and electric tricycle is seriously being considered by SPAD as a new mode of public transport and paratransit for the disabled, in view of the impending taxi fare increase that will take place this year.

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said that he was keen to introduce soon the motorised tricycle as a cheaper alternative in the suburbs.

"This type of flexible public transport vehicle should be encouraged since it fits the requirements for higher frequency of service, (it is) cost effective, easy to operate and can offer affordable fares for the masses especially for workers, college students and school children," he said.

It is also learnt that the "tuk-tuk" – commonly known as Autorick, Baby Taxi, Bajaj, Coco, Mototaxi, Pedicab or Tempo in other parts of the world – will act as urban feeder service for townships and housing estates to ferry passengers from LRT, KTM and future MRT stations as well as public transit hubs.

"If I could, I want to see it (implemented) as soon as possible. Much better if it's electric tricycle as it is environment-friendly and cheaper to operate in the longer run," said Syed Hamid.

"But it will depend on Road Transport Department's approval to determine whether the motorised tricycle – conventional or electric vehicle – is a roadworthy public transport," he added.

Last year, Philippines launched electric tricycles or e-trike, aided by a US$300 million loan from Asian Development Bank with the aim to put 100,000 e-trikes on Philippines' streets by 2017.

Thailand has embraced electrified tuk-tuk two years ago while Vietnam has started since November a trial run for electric vehicles to serve as shuttle between terminals for air travellers and staff at Noi Bai International Airport.

Asked about the prospect for tricycles to operate in city centres, Syed Hamid said: "I don't think that's feasible. This mode of transport is more suitable for suburban areas."

SPAD CEO Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal said the commission is finalising several plans to beef up the urban feeder service including the possibility of introducing the motorised tricycle as a new type of public transport.

"We are considering all forms of paratransit service," he said

DBKL Received Bomb Threat

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib fears tourism in the city would be affected by a “bomb threat” city hall had received.

“We at City Hall are not affected by the threat but I worry that tourism in the city would be tarnished because of such threats,” he said.

Ahmad Phesal said the letter, which was received by his office last Thursday, was not addressed to him, but to City Hall.

“I believe it was more an extortion instead of a threat. RM20 million was demanded to be deposited into four separate local bank accounts or the Twin Towers would be bombed.

“The threat was to bomb the Twin Towers if the money was not banked in, not the City Hall building.”

The mayor said he did not suspect someone working in City Hall to have sent the letter.

“The letter was most probably sent by an outsider because it was funny that the person provided four separate accounts for the ‘ransom’ to be banked in.

“The enforcement department is working closely with the police to get to the bottom of this.”

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa confirmed the report was lodged by City Hall on Wednesday. Tajuddin had also ruled out any connections of the threat to a terror attack.

“The case is being investigated for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication under Section 507 of the Penal Code.”

No arrest has been made. - Malay Mail

Full article: http://malaysia-chronicle.com/index.php?op...2#ixzz3OTqvDcWQ
Follow us: @MsiaChronicle on Twitter
