Is it normal to smile at strangers?

Dear /k/tards, I wan your opiñion on this. Well, what I want to say is, is it normal to smile at strangers (even shop clerk) and say thanks? Because I live in Kuala 'Ganu (but not warganegeri, ayam Kuantan) and most people at there find it weird to smile at strangers . For example lah, I went to 7Eleven earlier and bought some mineral water. After I finished paying, I smiled and say 'terima kasih' at the cashiers , and then they felt weird and terkejut with mate terbeliak. After I leave the shop, I went inside my car . I felt ashamed of that and mad like penagih inside there . Is it normal to smile and say thanks? Now vote and terangkan mengapa. THANK YOU PEOPLE!
