Service Engineer (Experience Sharing)

Greetings!

Hope that fellow service engineers out there would be willing to share their stories. Be it good or bad, it would definitely be worthwhile for the readers.

I have been reading a lot of topics with regards to the job prospect or daily routine of a service engineer in this forum. The reason being, I was offered a post at a multinational company that focuses on molecular biology, pharmaceuticals & bioprocessing. Bioprocessing will be my designated core if I were to join. I did my research for a period of time; be it via google, this forum, asking advice from peers that are working as a service engineers, put on my thinking cap for weeks; yeah, I did a lot of thinking.

Why I overthink this? Because I have been reading quite a lot of, for lack of a better word, negative and speculative comments on the net, mostly contributed by LYN forumers. Nonethless, after thorough consideration, I have decided and accepted the offer.

The remuneration package is not lucrative; it is above average I would say. The benefits are equivalent to any MNC in Malaysia. The basic salary is quite high and the miscellaneous allowances is mediocre. Note that I do not have a travel allowance in Malaysia except for transportation allowance (petrol+toll) for commuting back and forth from the workplace to my home.

Why don't I have a travel allowance? Won't service engineers will have to travel extensively one way or the other? This is due to the fact that I am working in a company that possesses a regional coverage function. Asia pacific to be specific. Wow that rhymed, haha.

My job prospect includes doing the standard commissioning and installation of the equipment and training personnel in asia pacific countries (the regular FAT,SAT,IQ,OQ,PQ). This is actually one of the factors that came into consideration before I accepted the offer, aside from the pay. I frequent pharmaceuticals facilities, universities, research institutions or simply put, biopharmaceutical-related sites. All in all, the experience was worth while. I will be lying if I tell you that it is a stress-free work, but hey, the same goes for any other job.

The good part.
1. The money is pretty decent. I would categorize it similar to people working in oil and gas industry because you will be compensated with travelling allowance (meals + entertainment) according to the currency of the country you are in. The allowance might not be equally high as people working in the O&G sector, nonetheless, it is better than nothing.

2. You get to travel on company dime. Flight, transport and accommodation are bared by the company. When I first joined, I was stationed in Hamburg and Enfield for roughly one month each for training purposes. Upon the completion of training, I returned to Malaysia and starts travelling within the asia pacific region.

3. Personally for me, you would have the opportunity to do things you would not be able to do before. I love travelling but I do not want to spend quite an amount of money into it. One way of compensating for that? This line of work.

4. Beautiful girls. Some are ugly, but most aren't. Haha! Shut up, I am a man.

The bad part of it.

1. Say sayonara to your social life. You will be travelling so much up until certain point it will be difficult to hold lasting relationships or even to maintain friendships. You have to be a friendly person that get along with anybody else that you have just met, in an instant. Sometimes you can feel very isolated due to your work doing lone working. I counter this by visiting friends or relatives that is within the geographical area that I am at at that point in time. Occasionally, I explored the tourist attraction places. Sometimes with friends, most of the time alone.

This might seems interesting to some but would also be the exact opposite to others. If you love travelling, seeing new people and learning new things everyday. I think this will suit you. Well this is my experience. If you are single, this might be a good experience, but If you are married or already has a commitment, I would not dissuade you but I certainly will not advise.

Appreciate if a fellow engineers could share the same.
