Chacom is associated with one of the oldest pipe companies. In 1825, in the small village of Avignon, near the birthplace of pipes, St. Claude, France, the Comoy family began making pipes from boxwood for Napoleon's army. In 1879, Henri Comoy and his cousin Chapuis started working together to make briar pipes in France to be sent to London (to where Comoy ultimately moved). Chapuis Comoy became one of the most famous companies in 1922. Combining their names, Chacom officially became a brand in 1928. Over the next few decades, the company continued to grow, producing pipes that were distributed to be sold in France, Belgium, Scandinavia, Germany, the United States, Japan, and others.

What is briar wood?

Briar root (French: bruyère), is extremely hard and heat-resistant, and is used for making smoking pipes. The football-sized tubers are harvested at the age of 30 to 60 years. They are cooked for several hours, then dried for several months before they are further processed. The wood is light brown to reddish brown, often beautifully textured, very hard, heat-resistant and does not affect the aroma of pipe tobacco smoke.

THIS is a gorgeous vintage Peterson System Standard 312 w/ a Sterling Silver collar and a P-Lip Stem. The pipe has a beautiful dark brown stain which really brings out the amazing briar grain all around the pipe. The markings have all worn down with age, but the Sterling Silver collar's stamps and shape seem consistent with other pipes I've seen which date to the late Pre-Republic era (1941-1947). Bowl: 8/10 - Excellent condition, with minor nicks and scratches consistent with age
Chamber: 9/10 - Excellent condition, caking, no charring - not reamed.
Stem: 8/10 - Great condition

What is the Peterson System?

Perhaps the most notable design from the Kapp and Peterson factory was Peterson's famed 'Dry System' pipes. The original patent was issued in Great Britain and Ireland on Aug. 8, 1890, Featuring a small reservoir intended to collect moisture before it reaches the smoker, the 'System Pipe' makes for a cool smoke that minimizes tongue bite, the bane of every pipe smoker.

In 1898 another of Peterson's innovative pipe inventions became available and was also patented. the Peterson-Lip (P-Lip) mouthpiece, designed to offset the inhaled smoke to the roof of the mouth,thus avoiding tongue bite.

The Peterson System pipes are the standard bearers of the Peterson pipe family, famous for the excellent smoking pleasure they provide. Often imitated but never equaled, the Peterson System smokes dry, cool and sweet, thanks to the scientific effectiveness of the original design.
