KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has joined the chorus of condemnation against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling for an end of the attacks before more innocent lives are lost.

In a brief statement today, Anwar said he stood in line with the international community who have strongly disapproved of Russia’s military advances into the neighbouring country.

“A military conflict at this time brings no benefit to anyone.

“This military action will lead to tragic loss of innocent lives, regional instability and further disruption of the global economy, which suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Anwar wrote.

He said simply marching into another country armed while seeking for peace is not how international relations are carried out, and that it has never been a viable option in today’s modern world.

Anwar, in offering up his prayers for affected Ukrainians caught in the crossfire, called for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to clarify Malaysia’s stand on the conflict.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has confirmed today that one of the men who nearly fell into the sinkhole that swallowed a woman in Jalan Masjid India has converted into Islam on Monday.

In a statement, Abim said the man converted at Abim’s Islamic outreach centre called IOA in the National Mosque.

“Abim confirms that the new convert embraced Islam under the guidance of IOA Masjid Negara last Monday,” its president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said here.

“Abim emphasises that having a religion is a natural right and instinct of every human being, and therefore, no one should be forced or coerced into matters of faith.”

At least 100 villagers and soldiers were killed in central Burkina Faso during a weekend attack on a village by al-Qaida-linked jihadis, according to videos of the violence analyzed by a regional specialist, who's described the assault as one of the deadliest this year in the conflict-battered West African nation.

Villagers in the Barsalogho commune which is 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the capital city were helping security forces dig trenches to protect security outposts and villages Saturday when fighters with the al-Qaida-linked JNIM group invaded the area and opened fire on them, said Wassim Nasr, a Sahel specialist and senior research fellow at the Soufan Center security think tank.

Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the attack Sunday, saying in a statement that it gained “total control over a militia position” in Barsalogho in Kaya, a strategic town security forces have used to fight off jihadis that have over the years tried to close in on the capital, Ouagadougou.

French police say they have arrested a man suspected of setting fires and causing an explosion outside a synagogue in a southern resort.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said "the alleged perpetrator" was detained on Saturday. He added that the police had shown "great professionalism".

French media reported that the suspect was shot and injured by police after he opened fire on the officers who came to arrest him in the city of Nîmes.
Earlier on Saturday, a police officer was injured in the blast outside the Beth Yaacov synagogue in the nearby seaside resort of La Grande-Motte.

The suspect - who was reportedly carrying a Palestinian flag - also set fire to several entrance doors of the synagogue.
Jewish community leader Yonathan Arfi said the incident was "an attempt to kill Jews" and seemed to have been timed to target Saturday morning worshippers.
President Emmanuel Macron said the incident was "a terrorist act".
