What Happens EPF Savings If You Die Before Retired

If you've made an EPF nomination, the process is much easier

When an EPF member dies after registering nominees, the withdrawal process is generally straightforward.

For Indian, Chinese, and other members, the nominated individuals are the direct beneficiaries, and EPF will distribute the savings according to the percentages specified by the member.

For Muslim members, the nominee acts as a wasi, or executor. The nominee receives the funds and is legally responsible for distributing them to the rightful heirs in accordance with faraid, the Islamic inheritance law.

If one nominee passes away before the member, only that nominee's allocated share is affected. The remaining nominees will still receive their designated portions.

If there's no nomination, families may face legal hurdles

Even without a nomination, EPF savings can still be claimed by a spouse, children, parents, siblings, or an estate administrator.

However, the payout process becomes significantly more complicated.

For balances below RM25,000, EPF will release RM2,500 upon claim approval, with the remaining balance paid out two months later.

For balances above RM25,000, EPF will first release RM2,500, followed by a second payment of up to RM17,500 after two months.

The remaining balance will be released only after the family obtains legal documents such as a Letter of Administration, Grant of Probate, or a Faraid Certificate.

Depending on the circumstances, obtaining these documents can take months or even years and may involve legal fees.

What if there's no nominee and no will?

When someone dies without both a nomination and a will, they are considered to have died intestate.

In these cases, the EPF savings become part of the deceased's estate.

For estates worth RM600,000 or less consisting only of movable assets such as cash, bank accounts, and EPF savings, family members can usually apply through Amanah Raya Berhad.

Larger estates, or those involving houses and land, may require applications through the High Court.

Once the necessary documents are obtained, the money must be distributed according to the law.

For Indians, Chinese, and others, distribution follows the Distribution Act 1958. For Muslims, distribution follows faraid rules as determined by the Syariah Court.

EPF also provides a separate RM2,500 death benefit

Many Malaysians may be unaware, but EPF offers a one-off Death Assistance payment.

If a member dies before turning 60 and still has savings in their account, eligible next of kin may receive an RM2,500 payment from EPF.

Importantly, this money is not deducted from the member's savings. It is a separate goodwill payment funded by EPF itself.

The claim must generally be submitted within six months of the member's death.

Dell unveils $699 XPS 13 laptop in challenge to Apple's MacBook Neo

Dell ⁠on Sunday unveiled its most affordable laptop, XPS 13, as the ⁠PC maker aims to capture market share from Apple's MacBook Neo by ‌attracting students and young professionals.

Starting at $699 and a reduced $599 for students aged 16 and older during the back-to-school season, the XPS 13 seeks to offer a superior experience compared to the MacBook Neo, Dell said.

The aggressive push into the PC ⁠market with a lower-priced laptop shows ⁠how Dell has taken cues from Apple to broaden its reach in a ⁠price-sensitive ‌industry that is facing tighter memory-chips supply.

Dell said the XPS 13 will be its thinnest and lightest model, about half a pound lighter ⁠than Apple's MacBook Neo, while also featuring a larger display.

Identity verification required for sponsored ads on social media starting tomorrow

All advertisers using sponsored advertisements on social media platforms will be required to verify identities in a bid to curb online fraud, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said.

She said the measure, which also targets digital gambling activities and the misuse of prominent individuals’ identities, is among the new responsibilities under the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC).

She said the code will come into force on Monday (June 1) under the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA) and will apply to social media platform providers classified as licensees, namely those with more than eight million users in Malaysia.

"We have seen many sponsored posts using the images of well-known individuals to promote content such as dubious investments, financial scams and online gambling, and so far it has been difficult to take action because we do not know who actually paid for the advertisements,” she said.

On the age-verification mechanism that will also take effect tomorrow to prevent individuals under the age of 16 from opening social media accounts, Teo explained that official documents such as identity cards or passports will be required for registration purposes.

Slightly higher salary deductions for PERKESO

The contributions will be borne in full by both local and foreign employees covered under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 [Act 4].

“Contributions are mandatory for all employees, including local and foreign workers, subject to the provisions of Act 4,” PERKESO said in a recently released FAQ.

Contract and part-time employees are also eligible for protection under the scheme, provided they are registered with and contributing to PERKESO and meet the eligibility requirements.

However, self-employed individuals are not covered, as they are required to register and contribute under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (Act 789).

Employee contribution rates under the Lindung 24 Jam scheme will be introduced in phases.

For the first two years, contributions will be set at 0.75% of wages, increasing to 1.0% over the following three years and to 1.25% from the sixth year onwards.

The maximum wage ceiling for this scheme is RM6,000. Contributions of those earning above the ceiling will remain unchanged.
