Petrol down 25sen, Diesel in peninsula down 75sen

Unsubsidised retail prices of RON95, RON97 and diesel will decrease from April 16 to 22 in line with the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), says the Finance Ministry.

In a statement on Wednesday (April 15), it said the retail price of unsubsidised RON95 petrol would decrease to RM4.02 per litre, down 25sen from RM4.27 previously, while RON97 will be at RM5.10 per litre, down 25sen from RM5.35 before.

Diesel prices in Peninsular Malaysia will drop to RM5.97 per litre, down 75sen from RM6.72 previously.

Under the targeted subsidy framework, RON95 petrol under the Budi95 programme remains at RM1.99 per litre, while diesel prices in Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan stay at RM2.15 per litre.

PETRONAS confirms fuel supply at its stations secured through June

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirms that fuel supply across its network of stations nationwide has been secured through the end of June 2026, an extension from its earlier projection of end May 2026.

In a statement today, Petronas said it continues to actively manage its supply chain to ensure sufficient stock across its station network amid the current global energy crisis arising from the West Asia conflict.

"Petronas supplies about 50 per cent of the country's fuel needs through its public-listed subsidiary Petronas Dagangan Bhd.

"The balance is being supplied by other oil companies operating in Malaysia,” it said.

The national oil company has also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a stable and reliable fuel supply for all Malaysians.

"Members of the public are encouraged to purchase fuels responsibly according to their daily needs and avoid any hoarding or panic buying,” it said, adding that responsible usage will help ensure continued accessibility for all.

Earlier on April 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Petronas is assisting the government in providing sufficient oil and gas supplies at least until May. - Bernama

‘Petrol price drop will be delayed’

Any impact from the dip in global crude oil price due to the Middle East ceasefire will be delayed, say experts.

They say it is not likely to bring lower prices at the pumps in Malaysia – at least not for a couple of months – because the current supply was purchased at the old, higher price, say experts.

Furthermore, even though Malaysian ships have been allowed to pass the Strait of Hormuz, global commodity prices, such as for oil and natural gas, are based on future supply and demand, not today’s news.

“Even though we have seen the oil price drop since the announcement of the ceasefire – Brent crude dropped from US$110 to US$97 per barrel – the impact will not be seen immediately,” said Mazli Noor, Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia.

“Crude trading is a very regulated market, whereby contracts mechanism are normally signed on a long-term basis and based on future requirement.

“Also, we need to consider the sailing time from the Strait of Hormuz to Malaysia, which is about four to six weeks ... If we purchase cheaper crude today, the earliest we can enjoy it is in almost two months, incorporating the refining process time.

“Since our own crude production is not enough to fulfil our needs, we still depend heavily on imports,” said Mazli, who is also a Society of Petroleum Engineers International professional member.

Prof Dr Yeah Kim Leng, director of the economic studies programme at Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia at Sunway University, said consumers must not expect immediate cheaper fuel because the conflict has damaged refineries and pipelines in the Middle East.

“There is a time lag since oil must be shipped, refined into petrol and diesel and transported to local stations. That typically takes four to eight weeks.

“Refining capacity is also a bottleneck because the ceasefire does not immediately result in damaged refineries or pipelines becoming operational.

“With the Middle East supplies accounting for about one-quarter of the world’s oil supply, the war has created a persistent supply shortage.

“The third reason is that traders look ahead and will bid up contract prices now if they believe demand will outstrip supply over the next three to six months.

Global energy crisis: MCMC investigates 17 individuals for spreading fake information

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating 17 individuals believed to have spread fake information on social media regarding the global energy crisis.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the individuals included those identified to have edited pictures and infographics displaying fake information using the names of local news agencies.

"...there are those who edited pictures from TV3 or Astro and stated that the price of petrol and electricity will rise, but the total and the information in the pictures are all wrong," she said during the officiation of the Film Community and Creative Youth Workshop here on Friday (April 3).

She expressed hope that the public, especially youth, would play their role in disseminating accurate information by creating content that educates the public.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, previously reminded all parties not to spread unverified information that could confuse the public.

He stressed that the government was committed to continuing to channel the latest information transparently about the current situation on the global energy price and supply crisis.

He said this would ensure the public had a clear picture without causing unnecessary concern. - Bernama
