Arbitrum Odyssey - paused until release of Nitro

Arbitrum Discord
https://discord.com/invite/arbitrum

Arbitrum Twitter
https://twitter.com/arbitrum

stumbled across this very resourceful guy, he's going to cover all the tasks needed to mint, highly recommend to check it out if you're very new to this.
https://twitter.com/OlimpioCrypto

𝘈𝘙𝘉𝘐𝘕𝘈𝘜𝘛𝘚, 𝘍𝘈𝘓𝘓 𝘐𝘕 !

The first week or so of the Arbitrum Odyssey has been very exciting to say the least!

But we’ve decided to pause the Arbitrum Odyssey as of now, to be resumed after Nitro is released.

More info below.

During mainnet beta, Arbitrum has capacity throttling in place to keep traffic at moderate levels. Like Ethereum, when traffic hits capacity the L2 gas price increases automatically until the traffic surge slows down. This mechanism in Arbitrum has been working as intended.

In a post-Nitro world, Arbitrum will have significantly more capacity before it begins to hit congestion.

This will make transactions consistently cheaper and the user experience much more closely aligned with a typical Arbitrum journey even under heavier loads.

Because of the heavy load being put on the chain causing higher than normal gas fees, we’ve decided it is best to pause the Odyssey until Nitro is released so that all communities and projects within Arbitrum continue to have a friction-free experience.

Read more about Nitro here: https://medium.com/offchainlabs/its-nitro-time-86944693bf29

We will be sharing more very soon regarding the Nitro timeline, but once we have launched Nitro we will coordinate with @GMX_IO and @yield on announcing when Week 2 will re-commence.

If you already did the Odyssey Week 2 tasks before the pause you’ll still get credit!

While pausing the Odyssey wasn’t an easy decision to make, our top priority is to make sure the user experience on Arbitrum One is as welcoming and seamless as possible. So with Nitro just around the corner, we're looking forward to continuing the Odyssey with all of you!

The Odyssey in a post-Nitro world will allow both Arbitrum and projects participating to show the world what rollup technology is capable of, and we are incredibly excited for it!

We want to thank all of the users and teams involved in the Odyssey, see you soon Arbinauts!

----------------------------------------------------------------

How to mint "Arrival on the Penumbra"

Yield Protocol has tasked you to do one of the following:

- Provide liquidity of ≥ $50 of assets to any maturity series
- Lend ≥ $50 of assets to any maturity series
- Borrow ≥ $100 of assets using supported collateral for any maturity series

You can withdraw your assets at any time, no need to wait till maturity date.

Start here: http://yieldprotocol.com/

Doing at least one of the above tasks will make you eligible to claim the "Arrival on the Penumbra" NFT after the end of the week here: https://galaxy.eco/arbitrum/campaign/GCaigUt9HD

For support or questions on how to use Yield Protocol or perform any of these activities, please visit their discord here: http://discord.gg/JAFfDj5

Yield Protocol
Fixed-rate lending for DeFi.

Interest rates shown are market rates and are subject to change. Make a leveraged trade
2. Be a liquidity provider on GMX (mint GLP)
3. Do a spot swap on GMX

Please note that GMX's contracts have a $10 minimum when opening a leveraged trade, and Minting GLP has a 15 minute cooldown before you can remove liquidity. These are safety and security mechanisms of the platform that have existed since the protocols inception and are unrelated to the Odyssey campaign.

You can start here: https://gmx.io/

Completing the steps above will make you eligible to claim "The Blueberry Nebula" NFT after the end of the week here: https://galaxy.eco/arbitrum/campaign/GCsqgUtsTX

For any questions or help regarding how to use GMX or perform any of these activities, please refer to the GMX telegram here: https://t.me/GMX_IO

If the Project Galaxy NFT claim page shows you're not eligible it's because they need to update it manually (it not automatic) - please be patient as it may not update until late this week/early next week.

Arbitrum Odyssey FAQ

Please check here regularly for updates to our frequently asked questions for the Arbitrum Odyssey

Are there any requirements to participate?
Only ETH to pay for gas fees!

Can I participate if I didn't vote on the Snapshot?
Yes you can participate, voting on snapshot was not a requirement.

Should I do anything now to prepare for the Odyssey?
Nope, nothing until launch!

How many NFTs will be up for grabs?
A total of 17 different NFTs will be available.
1 for bridgeweek (week 1)
1 bonus one from bridgeweek if you use the bridge with highest volume of ETH bridged
14 for weeks 2-8
1 final one for getting 13/16 NFTs

Where can I claim my NFTs?
https://galaxy.eco/arbitrum/

Is there a limit to how many NFTs can be minted?
Nope, as long as you complete the task in question you'll be able to claim!

If i already did the tasks before the odyssey began, am I eligible to claim an NFT?
Nope, you need to do the tasks stated within a specific time frame which will be revealed each week.

LPT on paying the least amount of gas, applies to both Ethereum L1/L2s
It is advisable to transact on weekdays during daytime in Malaysia as the fee can go as low as 17-25 gwei, if there's an NFT minting going on, it'll return to normal within 2 hours. Every little savings adds up during this entire campaign.

Check Arbitrum gas price here

How to view my Arbitrum NFTs on Metamask mobile wallet?

tap on import NFT on the app, under the NFT section.

you can then add the contract address of the NFT plus your token ID to make them show up, you can find these info on the Arbiscan block explorer of your own address, look under ERC-721 token txns.

here's the contract address of the first one, just add your own token ID:
0xfAe39eC09730CA0F14262A636D2d7C5539353752

Don't forget to claim this OAT if you bridged in with hop last week

https://galaxy.eco/HopProtocol/campaign/GCmydUtumN

Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Is Going Strong

http://mailchi.mp/entethalliance/eea-annou...-consensus-2017

Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Is Going Strong

MAY 16, 2017
It has been a busy few months since the launch of Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, and we have several exciting developments to share.

When we announced at the end of February that we had formed an Alliance to define enterprise-grade software on the Ethereum blockchain, we could not have imagined such an enthusiastic reception. In the following weeks, we received hundreds of applications for membership from enterprises, startups, and academic groups, and offers of support from the growing community of Ethereum specialists and experts. As a result, the Alliance will soon welcome a new cohort of members.

The technology we are building inherently drives collaboration, and we expect it to become increasingly robust, thanks to the growth and diversity of our contributors across industries and sectors.

Building the Stack
We have named an official Technical Steering Board, whose members have already made important strides building EntETH1.0, the protocol that is the basis for the Alliance’s ongoing work.

The EntETH1.0 reference architecture seeks to accomplish three key objectives:

Configurable Consensus: the ability to swap consensus mechanisms depending on the type of environment one wants to create
Privacy: the ability to have only the desired counterparties (and regulator, if necessary) able to see a transaction
Rules Based Access Control: the ability to have role assignment, role authorization, and permission authorization
The protocol is the result of collaboration between experts from member organizations. Work on the protocol is being led by these Technical Steering Board members:

Banco Santander – John Whelan
BlockApps – Kieren Lubin-James
BNY Mellon – Alex Batlin (chair)
CME Group – Jonathan Morley
ConsenSys – Bob Summerwill
Cryptape – Jan Xie
IC3 – Andrew Miller
Intel – Sanjay Bakshi
J.P. Morgan – Tyrone Lobban
Microsoft – Marley Grey
Nuco – Jinius Tu
Advisor – Jeff Wilcke
Advisor – Vitalik Buterin
Application Layer
We predict that some of the most important work to emerge from the Alliance will come from the application layer working groups that have formed since the launch. Members have the opportunity to self select into working groups within the organization and build projects publicly or privately, however they choose, using Ethereum-centric smart contracts.

We currently have active working groups in identity, banking, and supply chain. In June, we will form further working groups that include pharmaceuticals, mobile, and energy.

Join us at Consensus 2017
The Alliance will drive work on Ethereum at the Consensus 2017 hackathon on May 20th to 21st. Please consider registering to participate in the hackathon, we want to see a strong showing of ethereum talent.

We will also be hosting a two-hour afternoon event that will include presentations, panels, and a demo on May 22nd at Consensus in New York. Hope to see you there. Please see here for more details on the event.

Stay Informed
To receive regular updates, please sign up for our email newsletter.

Interested in Membership?
There’s never been a better time. Please reach us at info@entethalliance.org with membership inquiries.

For all inquiries, please contact: info@entethalliance.org

For reference I'll leave today's price chart here, be sure to check back after a month!

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-hav...-ageing-in-mice

It's Happening: Scientists Can Now Reverse DNA Ageing in Mice
Humans are next.

Researchers have identified a cellular mechanism that allows them to reverse ageing in mouse DNA and protect it from future damage.

They've shown that by giving a particular compound to older mice, they can activate the DNA repair process and not only protect against future damage, but repair the existing effects of ageing. And they're ready to start testing in humans within six months.

"The cells of the old mice were indistinguishable from the young mice, after just one week of treatment," said lead researcher David Sinclair from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia and the Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"This is the closest we are to a safe and effective anti-ageing drug that's perhaps only three to five years away from being on the market if the trials go well."

Sinclair and his team made headlines back in 2013 when they found that the cells of younger mice contained more of a compound called nicotinaminde adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, than their older counterparts.

Not only that, but when they gave the older mice more NAD+, they started to look younger, too.

It was a big deal at the time, but one of the tricky things about medicine is that in order to show that something could work as a potential treatment, you need to first understand how it's acting in the body.

And although the researchers knew NAD+ was having an impressive effect, they couldn't say for sure how it was doing it.

Now, Sinclair and his team have released a new study, where they outline in detail the mechanism through which NAD+ protects DNA from the damage of ageing and radiation in mice.

So how does it work? When we're born, all of our cells have the ability to repair DNA damage, which we experience constantly through random mutations when our cells divide, or whenever we go out in the sun.

But as we get older, our ability to patch up this damage declines, and our cells being to age.

What the researchers have now shown in this latest study is that a lot of this damage comes down to a DNA-repair compound called PARP1.

When there's a lot of NAD+ in a cell, PARP1 does its job and keeps our DNA healthy. But when NAD+ drops naturally with age, PARP1 starts to decline, and damage builds up.

To see whether they could take advantage of this cellular mechanism, Sinclair and his team developed a drug that contains the precursor to NAD+, known as NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide.

In mice, boosting older mice with NMN was enough to kick DNA repair into action and even reverse existing DNA damage.

They now plan to trial a similar drug in humans before the end of the year - and not just for anti-ageing purposes, but also to protect against DNA damage of any kind.

In fact, the team is collaborating with NASA to see if NMN could help protect its astronauts against harsh space radiation on their four-year journey to Mars, during which it's predicted that 5 percent of the astronauts' cells would die, and their chances of cancer would approach 100 percent.

The drug could also be useful for groups that are particular vulnerable to the effects of radiation, such as frequent fliers and those who undergo frequent CT scans or X-rays.

"The idea is to protect the body from radiation exposure here on earth, either naturally occurring or doctor-inflicted," Sinclair told Time.

"If I were going to have an X-ray or a CT scan, I would take NMN beforehand."

Survivors or childhood cancer could also benefit - right now, 96 percent go on to suffer a chronic illness by age 45, including cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, or cancers unrelated to their original cancer.

"All of this adds up to the fact they have accelerated ageing, which is devastating," said one of the researchers, Lindsay Wu. "It would be great to do something about that, and we believe we can with this molecule."

Before we get too excited, we need to keep in mind that many, many studies in mice are not replicated in humans.

So until the results of these early clinical trials in people begin to trickle in, there's no promise that NMN will help protect human DNA.

But understanding this mechanism of DNA ageing is a big step towards better understanding how to keep our cells healthier for longer, and that's pretty exciting.

The research has been published in Science.

Business Giants to announce Ethereum Alliance

https://nytimes.com/2017/02/27/business/dea...g-security.html

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase and other corporate giants are joining forces to create a new kind of computing system based on the virtual currency network Ethereum.

Some 30 companies are set to announce on Tuesday the formation of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, which will create a standard version of the Ethereum software that businesses around the world can use to track data and financial contracts.

The new nonprofit organization is part of a broader movement to harness the technological concept known as the blockchain, which was introduced to the world by Bitcoin.

Blockchains offer a way for unrelated computers and companies to simultaneously collect and store information without relying on a central authority, similar to the way that Wikipedia is written and maintained by a group of writers and editors rather than a single author.

The technology is viewed as being harder to corrupt or hack because of its reliance on many people rather than just a single authority.

Many big corporations have been looking for ways to use blockchain technology to keep track of information created by unrelated companies, like stock and bond trading transactions.

IBM has made a particularly big push into the blockchain business, and it has been leading a separate collaborative project, known as the Hyperledger Foundation.

The new Ethereum alliance has been described by some of its backers as a way to insure that the IBM-led blockchain effort is not the only option for businesses looking to use the technology. Other companies like R3 and Chain have also been developing alternative blockchains.

“We are pretty equally spending our time across the different chains,” said Alex Batlin, the global head of blockchain at Bank of New York Mellon, which is joining the Ethereum alliance.

Ethereum was introduced in 2013 by a developer named Vitalik Buterin, then 19, who had previously worked on Bitcoin. Since its official release in 2015, the Ethereum network has been the target of hackers and theft.

The alliance, which is made up of about 30 companies, hopes to build on the blockchain concept, introduced by Bitcoin. It allows companies to store information without using a central authority.

Yet it has also won a large following among programmers who view it as a new and sophisticated way for groups of people and companies to initiate and track transactions and contracts of all sorts.

That has led some companies to bet that Ethereum will win the race to become the standard blockchain for future business operations.

“In every industry that we come across, Ethereum is usually the first platform that people go to,” said Marley Gray, the principal blockchain architect at Microsoft.

The creation of the Ethereum alliance shows a continuing commitment among big companies to making the technology work, in large part because it promises to create much more streamlined databases that require less back-office maintenance.

Accenture released a report last month arguing that blockchain technology could save the 10 largest banks $8 billion to $12 billion a year in infrastructure costs — or 30 percent of their total costs in that area. Accenture is one of 11 companies on the governing board of the Ethereum alliance.

The current Ethereum network has an internal virtual currency known as Ether, the value of which has risen and fallen over the last two years. On Monday, a single Ether was worth around $15, and all the outstanding Ether were worth around $1.3 billion.

Ethereum, however, is much more than just a system for tracking currency. It also allows people to write what are known as smart contracts into the Ethereum blockchain. Two companies could, for instance, create a contract that would automatically send money to one of them if a particular news authority reported that the Chicago Cubs won the World Series or that “La La Land” won the Oscar for best picture. (As the last example shows, what would happen if the authority was wrong is a more difficult question.)

Because of its capacity for smart contracts — and other complicated computing capacities — Ethereum is viewed as more agile and adaptable than Bitcoin.

As with Bitcoin, however, anyone can join the Ethereum network and see all the activity on the Ethereum blockchain.

The companies working on the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance want to create a private version of Ethereum that can be rolled out for specific purposes and open only to certified participants. Banks could create one blockchain for themselves and shipping companies could create another for their own purposes.

“In every industry that we come across, Ethereum is usually the first platform that people go to,” said Marley Gray, the principal blockchain architect at Microsoft.

The purpose of the alliance is to create a standard, open-source version of Ethereum that can provide a foundation for any specific use case.

The private systems are not likely to require an Ether virtual currency, though the companies are hoping to create modules that will allow users to put in and take out individual elements of Ethereum as they choose.

Many companies have already been working to create their own versions of Ethereum for specific purposes.

JPMorgan, for instance, has created a version of Ethereum known as Quorum that the bank has been using in tests to move money between JPMorgan branches in different countries. Quorum will become a part of the new version of Ethereum being developed by the alliance.

Some of the companies working in the new alliance hope that the private Ethereum blockchains will, at some point, be able to connect to the public Ethereum blockchain, creating a standard for information storage and movement around the world.

“Even if you create private networks, if you can anchor them to public networks you get an extremely strong set of links together,” Mr. Batlin of BNY Mellon said.

The work on Ethereum has continued despite an attack on an Ethereum project last year, when a hacker gained control of more than $50 million worth of Ether.

Mr. Batlin and others involved in the Ethereum Alliance said that the way the Ethereum developers handled that attack convinced them of the maturity of the technology.

Today, Ethereum has a larger community of volunteer developers, and more computers on its network than Bitcoin. And the members of the new alliance say the real-world testing of Ethereum makes it stronger than the other alternatives.

“Ethereum has this massive advantage of having the public network that has been tested for two years,” Mr. Gray of Microsoft said.

The other members of the new alliance include Intel, Banco Santander, BBVA, Credit Suisse, ING, Thomson Reuters and UBS.

And the market reacts.

[attachmentid=8533414]

Singapore to hike water price by 30%

http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/sing...1-in-two-phases

SINGAPORE - Water prices will increase for the first time in 17 years, Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Monday (Feb 20).

Including taxes, the prices will go up by 30 per cent in two phases. The first hike will be from July 1 this year, and the second from July 1 next year.

But lower and middle income households will get help to manage the increase.

"Water prices were last revised in 2000, almost 20 years ago. We need to update our water prices to reflect the latest costs of water supply," Mr Heng said in the 2017 Budget speech in Parliament.

There will also be a water conservation tax of 10 per cent on Newater for business users.

The increase will be less than $25 per month for three-quarters of businesses, and less than $18 for three quarters of households.

But after subsidies, 75 per cent of HDB households should see an increase of less than $12 a month in their water bills.
Households in one-room and two-room flats will not see any increase in their bills, Mr Heng said.

They will be receiving U-Save rebates of up to $380 for the year, an increase of $120 from $260. Three-room flat households will get a $100 U-Save rebate increase, four-room flats $80 and five-room flats $60.

Executive and multi-generational flat households will get $40 more. These increases are permanent and will cost an additional $71 million a year. About 880,000 HDB households will benefit.

In addition, a sanitary appliance fee and waterborne fee will be restructured to become a single volume-based fee.

Households using more water, that is above 40 cubic m, will be charged a higher rate to discourage water wastage.

The price increase will go towards maintaining Singapore's water infrastructure, and more expensive sources of water such as desalination.

With more unpredictable weather patterns, water levels at the Linggiu Reservoir in Johor have been falling. It supplies about 60 per cent of Singapore's water needs.

Singapore has invested in desalination and Newater plants which are "costly but necessary" investments, Mr Heng said.

Singapore now uses 430 million gallons of water a day, with the domestic sector accounting for 45 per cent, and the non-domestic sector, the rest.

Water demand is expected to more than double by 2060.

The country gets water from four National Taps - Newater, water from local catchment areas, desalination and imported water.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli had said earlier that the price of water has not been revised for many years and that it is underpriced.

This is the first time in 17 years the price is being increased.

The tariffs for domestic potable water, which are calculated monthly, stand at $1.17 per cubic m for the first 40 cubic me and $1.40 per cubic m thereafter, excluding taxes.

This will go up to $1.19 for the first 40 cubic m and $1.46 per cubic m thereafter from July 1, 2017.

Prices will be $1.21 and $1.52 respectively from July 1, 2018, excluding taxes.
