Microsoft Is About To Deal A Harsh Blow To Android

Microsoft is reportedly about to invest in Cyanogen, a startup that builds and maintains its own version of Android that is separate from Google’s.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft will be a minority investor in a $70 million round that values Cyanogen in the hundreds of millions.

Cyanogen’s Android powers the OnePlus One, a smartphone that got lots of great reviews last year and was so popular that it suffered shortages.

The investment may seem odd, given that Microsoft has its own mobile platform, Windows Phone, and is making a renewed push for smartphones with Windows 10, which will come out in the next year or so. But there are a couple reasons why it makes sense.

First, Microsoft is being a little mischievous here, encouraging the kind of chaos that Android is already suffering.

Android is the world’s most popular smartphone operating system by a long way, with about 80% of the market. But there are different flavors of Android, and not all of them are under Google’s control.

If a company wants to use the Android brand on a phone, they have to use Google’s version. It has links to various Google services, plus a bunch of other features, and Google updates it regularly. For instance, the latest version, Lollipop, uses Google’s “Material Design,” which makes icons flatter and makes Android look more like Google web sites.

Google also releases the core of Android under an open source license. Anybody is free to take that core and modify or “fork” it, then build on top of it with no links to Google services or other restrictions. Amazon has based its entire Fire lineup on a forked version of Android, and a bunch of smartphone makers in China — including OnePlus — and other countries do the same thing.

All these different versions of Android are a real problem for Google, because it means that (a.) not every Android phone promotes Google’s online services and the ads that run on those services, which is where Google makes almost all its money, and (b.) developers have a hard time keeping up with all the different versions of Android out there, which gives them one reason to build for Apple’s iOS platform first.

Google would like to bring Android under control, and has been moving more services out of the core and into the Google-approved version. By investing in Cyanogen, Microsoft makes it a little harder for Google to achieve this goal.

The second reason: Microsoft needs to keep developers interested in its platforms, as Windows is no longer dominant like it used to be. One way it’s been encouraging developers is by making it easier for traditional Microsoft developers to build apps for non-Windows devices — for instance, last year it invested in a company called Xamarin, which lets Microsoft developers move their apps over to iOS and Android fairly easily.

By investing in Cyanogen, Microsoft may be able to influence the direction of Cyanogen’s version of Android, making it easier for Microsoft developers to keep up.

China's List Of Its 10 Worst Illegal Renovations Is Both Comical And Scary

In recent years, China’s City Urban Administrative and Law Enforcement Bureau has taken to publishing a shame list of dodgy urban developments in order to let citizens know they won’t tolerate DIY knock-ups.

But these aren’t your typical boxed in verandahs or viewing platforms masquerading as decks. In China, necessity meets demand in ways that would have local officials here in Australia clutching at their collective chests.

The City Urban Administrative and Law Enforcement Bureau, otherwise known as Chengguan, says public criticism of it being seen to do nothing about the developments, particularly in regard to rich and well-connected property owners, has led to the popular shame campaign.

As you’ll see, there’s also a few safety issues.

Above right, at number one, is in Tianhe District, Guangzhou city, in southern China’s Guangdong Province. Residents of a high-rise block of flats planted a delightful rooftop garden covering several windows and balconies.

The Birdcage

Hankou city, central China’s Hubei Province. Residents liked the idea of a 4-storey-high birdcage over their rooftop. Netizens were impressed, Chengguan less so.

A Mini Town

Xingnan city, central China’s Henan Province. An entire quadrangle house with an antique courtyard built atop a high-rise.

Sky Gardens

Wuhan city, central China’s Hubei Province. On top of a 12-storey residential block, a two-storey garden. Yes, the whole villa.

Pengamal undang-undang itu berkata mahkamah sivil sememangnya tidak boleh mencampuri urusan mahkamah syariah seperti digariskan dengan jelas dalam Perkara 121(1A) Perlembagaan Persekutuan.

Menurutnya lagi, buat masa ini sebarang pertikaian antara muslim dan bukan Muslim akan dirujuk ke mahkamah sivil memandangkan Mahkamah Syariah tiada kuasa ke atas bukan Muslim.

"Perkara 121(1A) Perlembagaan Persekutuan sudah menyatakan bahawa mahkamah sivil tiada bidang kuasa ke atas mahkamah syariah," kata Syahredzan kepada Malaysiakini.

Beliau mengulas cadangan Abdul Aziz supaya mahkamah perlembagaan – yang mengatasi kuasa mahkamah sivil dan syariah – ditubuhkan untuk menyelesaikan apa sahaja pertikaian yang berpanjangan.

Abdul Aziz yang merupakan pensyarah undang-undang di Universiti Selangor (Unisel) membuat cadangan itu susulan cadangan seorang menteri di jabatan perdana menteri untuk mewujudkan Mahkamah Persekutuan Syariah.

Menteri hal ehwal agama Islam, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom pada hari Khamis lalu mencadangkan agar satu Mahkamah Persekutuan Syariah yang selari kuasanya dengan Mahkamah Persekutuan Sivil diwujudkan.

Mengulas lanjut, Syahredzan berkata cadangan Dr Abdul Aziz itu hanya boleh dilaksanakan sekiranya kerajaan menerima cadangan Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

Bagaimanapun, kata Syahredzan, cadangan Jamil Khir itu bermasalah untuk dilaksanakan kerana kuasa mahkamah syariah kini terletak bawah negeri masing-masing.

Pada masa sama, katanya, seandainya menjadi kenyataan ia akan mewujudkan "persaingan" di antara kedua-dua sistem mahkamah.

"Nanti akan ada persaingan di antara kedua-dua mahkamah dalam mengeluarkan perintah masing-masing," kata Syahredzan.

Civil court existed for few hundred years during British administration, which our forefather agreed of, when Malaysia got Merdeka... syariah court was only introduce in the early 70's, which is just a supplement court for Islamic affair,.. why do now syariah court now can supersede civil court ??..
