Career Progression of An Engineer

Hi guys, could you share your experience as an engineer and how your career progress (specifically mechanical or electrical engineer)

Do you continue in a technical role all the way till your retirement, or do you switch to a more commercial or a completely commercial role after certain years?

For technical role, it seems that the progression is quite limited; from junior, senior to lead/principle engineer and sometimes manager.
On the other hand, what role and how do you switch from a technical to a more commercial related role.
