Cast Member Dies on Carnival Horizon

A staff member, part of Carnival Horizon Playlist Productions cast team has ended her life, reports Cruise Hive. According to this popular cruise website the tragic event on Horizon happened during the December 29, voyage. Crew members say that the female cast member was a dancer from Canada, part of the Playlist Productions team who boarded the ship in October 2018.

The Maritime Attorney Jim Walker posted the tragic news on Cruise Law News Facebook page saying

‘‘Crew members inform me that a member of Carnival Cruise Line's entertainment department on the Carnival Horizon allegedly ended her life. The Carnival Horizon is currently on a Caribbean cruise and is expected to arrive back in Miami tomorrow morning. RIP’’

After the tragic event, all Playlist Production shows onboard Carnival Horizon were canceled for the entire voyage.

Carnival Cruise Line Entertainment Director Hugo Hidalgo posted the following letter:

‘‘Due to unforeseen circumstances, this weeks cruise will not have Playlist Productions cast onboard. We have made arrangements for guest entertainment and special shows to replace our regular offerings. We appreciate your understanding and certain you will enjoy the many options we have planned for you this week. Our team is dedicated to making sure you have a vacation filled with lots of fun and incredible entertainment. ’’

Playlist production team members disembarked from Carnival Horizon on January 6, when the ship arrived in its home port Miami, taking some time off after the loss of their friend.

France bracing for bigger, more violent 'yellow vests' demos

PARIS: French officials said on Friday (Jan 11) they expect this weekend's "yellow vest" demonstrations to be bigger and more violent than a week ago, as the protest movement which had shown signs of fatigue gains fresh impetus.

National police chief Eric Morvan told France Inter radio he expected turnout to be on a par with mid-December for the ninth consecutive Saturday of protests, which have repeatedly ended in clashes with police and the destruction of property.

Paris police chief Michel Delpuech said he expected demonstrators in Paris to outnumber the estimated 3,500 that attempted to march on the National Assembly last week, and predicted they would be "more tempted by violence".

On Jan 5, around 50,000 people wearing the movement's trademark high-visibility vests took part in protests nationwide, an increase on the previous week but far below the nearly 300,000 that turned out for the inaugural protest in mid-November.

In a first this week, thousands of protesters are expected to descend on the central cathedral city of Bourges, despite being banned from entering its historic centre.

The level of participation Saturday will set the tone for the start next week of a national debate on voters' grievances.

President Emmanuel Macron is hoping the debate - a response to voters' demands for more of a say in national law-making - will help tamp down the protesters' anger.

But the process risks being hobbled by record levels of distrust towards politicians and representatives of the state.

A poll by the respected Cevipof political sciences institute released on Friday showed 77 percent of respondents thought politicians inspired "distrust", "disgust" or "boredom".

Last week, a group of demonstrators used a forklift to ram the doors of the ministry of government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux, and a former professional boxer battered two police officers guarding a bridge over the Seine river.

"Week after week we have observed a drift towards increasingly violent behaviour," Delpuech told France Inter radio, adding that symbols of state power had become the chief targets.

ASIAN TOURISTS CONCERNED

The weekly images of rioting are taking a toll on tourism in Paris, officials said on Friday.

Christian Mantei of the Atout France promotional agency said international passenger arrivals at Paris airports fell by 5 to 10 per cent in December year-on-year and that bookings for the coming three months were down 6.8 per cent.

"People from Asia in particular are worried and need to be reassured," Tourism Minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne said.

The government is taking an increasingly tough line with the rural and small-town protesters, who accuse Macron, 41, of being deaf to the concerns of ordinary citizens and of favouring the rich over the poor in his policies.

Some are intent on forcing him from office.

On Monday, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 80,000 security force members would be deployed nationwide on Saturday.

"Those who question our institutions will not have the last word," Philippe said.

He also announced plans for legislation to ban known "troublemakers" from taking part in demonstrations.

Some protesters accuse the police of fanning the flames by using tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades against demonstrators.

A police captain in the southern city of Toulon was also filmed punching demonstrators last weekend.

Macron tried to take the heat out of the protests in December by announcing a 10-billion-euro ($11.5-billion) package of wage boosts and tax relief for low earners.

KOTA KINABALU: A two-year-old girl was rescued from the clutches of a man who held her hostage and was shot dead after a five-hour standoff on Sunday (Jan 13).

The girl, who was not identified, was rushed to the Likas Women and Children's Hospital.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said the girl suffered a cut to her neck, but believes she will be all right.

He said the unidentified suspect dropped the child to the ground, after he was shot dead by police in a four-storey flat at Telipok Ria apartments about 25km from here at 5.32pm.

Omar said that the man made no demands during the standoff, after they were informed of the 12.30pm incident.

The residents had called the police at 4pm, he said.

He said the man, who was holding a knife, had grabbed the child who was playing with toys at a corridor along the fourth floor of the flats.

He then entered an apartment, where an elderly man was performing his zohor prayers in a room.

The suspect told the man not to come out, and then sat down in the hall with the child.

Residents then broke open the main door of the house and the man continued to threaten the child, and is believed to have cut her neck.

When the police arrived at the scene, the man refused to talk, and he threatened to throw the child out of the kitchen window. Police decided to shoot the suspect at that point, he said.

He said they have yet to establish the suspect's background, and believe he was of unsound mind or on drugs.

The suspect was in his 30s.

Shah Alam Car Free Day event turns chaotic

THE usually calm monthly Shah Alam Car Free Day event in Dataran Kemerdekaan turned chaotic when participants of the Big Walk demanded medals although they were ineligible.

Some of participants flipped tables after finishing the walk when they were informed that they were ineligible for the medals due to prior conditions set by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

Held in conjunction with the Car Free Day's second year anniversary, the Big Walk drew some 6,000 participants, however, MBSA had only promised 1,000

T-shirts and medals with several conditions.

They were also eligible for medals that were to be handed out after the event. As proof they were given "rings" during the T-shirt redemption that would be exchanged after they completed the run.

These conditions were put up on social media as well as the JomRun application that MBSA used for the first time.

Things turned chaotic when some did not get the medals or the T-shirts but no untoward incidents occurred.

Social media users took to social media to vent their frustration on the MBSA January Shah Alam Car Free Day 2019 events page on Facebook.

Facebook user Luqman Danieyal said several participants had cut queue despite not queuing up earlier in the morning.

Another user Lina Idris Jamalullail responded to Luqman's post, saying she was disappointed with the mentality of some participants who refused to line up.

Facebooker Saya Red said he was disappointed that some runners allegedly provoked the crowd for not receiving medals despite MBSA's conditions.

"They were stubborn and insisted they wanted the medals because they arrived first but they did they think of us who were supposed to get it. Some of them even grabbed the medals and threw it on the floor. It is free, couldn't you have followed the rules?" he said.

Meanwhile MBSA's community development director Asmah Mohd Zin said those who insisted on medals for finishing early were probably outsiders who were unfamiliar with the Car Free Day programme.

"For the first time, we used the Jom Run app, so it was open to outsiders as well. However, this is a fun run and I believe competitive runners had joined, expecting medals," she said.

Asmah said the details had been clearly put on their Facebook page but believes only those familiar with their events would have known the programme format.

She said the walk was a fun exercise that the entire family can participate. It is organised on the second Sunday of every month to promote a healthy lifestyle.

This is the first time, such an incident has occurred she added.

JomRun meanwhile posted an official statement that some of the runners who completed the route earlier thought that they deserved to get the medal even though they did not have the "ring".

"We refused to compromise as the medals should only be given to participants with the "ring".

"One woman participant entered our tent, grabbed a pack of medals and threw it out to the participants who were outside the tent. Then, everyone in front of our booth flipped our tables and invaded our tent to snatch the medals," read the statement from JomRun representative Yi Hern.

She said she instructed all of their crew members to leave the tent for safety, however, this meant that participants with the ring could not receive their medals.

"We hereby apologise on behalf of the unacceptable behaviour of a small proportion of the participants.

"We will discuss with the organiser (MBSA) to see what we could do and what we could improve in the Shah Alam Car Free Day," said the statement.

The Shah Alam Car Free Day saw participants walking 5km around the city centre with several activity stations placed along the route.

Bicycle enthusiasts even turned up to join the 5km walk.

KUANTAN: The Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, will be the sixth Sultan of Pahang on Jan 15.

This was announced by Tengku Muda Pahang Tengku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah at Istana Abu Bakar in Pekan on Saturday (Jan 12.)

On Friday, the Pahang Royal Council had a meeting that lasted four hours in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The meeting was chaired by Tengku Abdullah and attended by members of the Royal Council.

The current state Ruler, Sultan Ahmad Shah, aged 88, is unwell.

Tengku Abdullah's installation as the Sultan of Pahang would pave the way for him to be one of the candidates for Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The selection of the next King has become a much-discussed topic after Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan stepped down on Jan 6.

The Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the next King would take his oath of office on Jan 31.

After the Sultan of Kelantan, the next in line in the rotation of the nine Malay Rulers are the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan of Johor and Sultan of Perak respectively.
