laptop problem or HDD failing?

hi everyone,

lately my laptop been acting weird. It is exhibiting the following symptoms:

Takes very long time to load anything. When I click a folder, it takes ages for it pop up. Even the websites, it takes a while to load, it got stuck at the "waiting for cache" part.
Even some of the games I installed in it, games that came out 20+ years ago, still lags half way playing it.

At one point, the whole thing just become unusable, as in I boot into windows, and folder takes forever to load and the whole thing just freezes there. I had to reformat windows and install a fresh one. It worked ok for a few days, then the problems start coming back, but nowhere as serious as before.

I suspect the HDD is failing, but i pulled it out and tried using it as a portable HDD, it loads fine in other computer, as in copying and transfering files, speeds seems fast too.

or

something in my laptop is going bad, e.g connectors?. Coz its a very old laptop, almost 5 years+.
