Top LulzSec hacker was FBI informant

Leader of Anonymous-linked group helped investigators to identify fellow hackers, as five others charged in New York.

A leading hacker, whose group claimed responsibility for attacks on the CIA, law enforcement agencies in the UK and Ireland and major corporations, was an FBI informant, according to court documents.

Hector Xavier Monsegur, a leader of the Anonymous-linked LulzSec hacker ring, agreed to work with the FBI after secretly pleading to 12 charges of computer hacking last August, the FBI said, as charges against five other hackers were announced on Tuesday.

Monsegur, known as Sabu online, and the five others were charged in connection with last year's infamous hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment, as well as attacks on Fox Broadcasting, the security companies HB Gary and Stratfor, and others, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

More recently one of the hackers eavesdropped and recorded a telephone conference between members of the FBI and senior British police officials in an embarrassing episode for law enforcement agencies in the US and UK.

"These cyber criminals affiliated themselves with Anonymous in different ways. They are not anonymous today, they have been identified and charged," said a law enforcement official, who did not want to be identified as the investigation is continuing.

The FBI was able to gain information about the hackers after identifying Monsegur, an unemployed 28-year-old father of two. Threatened with jail, he agreed last year to become a secret informant and turn in his colleagues so as to stay with his two young children.

In Twitter messages, the Anonymous-affiliated account @YourAnonNews called Monsegur a "traitor" and played down the charges, claiming "We don't have a leader".

Monsegur was arrested in June 2011 at a housing complex in Manhattan, just weeks after LulzSec had perpetrated its most damaging campaign, hacking the CIA, Sony, Fox and other institutions and causing billions of dollars in damage around the world, according to some estimates.

An offshoot of the Anonymous hacker group, LulzSec was also behind the December hack on US security company Stratfor, as well as attacks on the UK's Serious Organized Crime Agency, the national police of Ireland, and the Mexican government website.

'Bee's nest'

Monsegur was charged with aggravated identity theft, related to the selling of stolen credit card numbers, and pleaded guilty in August, in a secret deal that saw him start working with the government from FBI offices.

He kept up his leadership of the hacking ring, but allowed FBI agents to monitor his online activities, enabling them to alert companies and institutions that were being targeted. He even persuaded his colleagues to call off a successful hack on the CIA's website. "You're knocking over a bee's nest," he allegedly warned his associates. "Stop."

Besides the case against Monsegnur, the indictment also detailed charges against Ryan Ackroyd, aka "Kayla," and Jake Davis, aka "Topiary," both British; and Darren Martyn, aka "pwnsauce" of Ireland. Each were charged with two counts of computer hacking conspiracy and face 10 years in jail.

Donncha O'Cearrbhail, aka "palladium," of Ireland, faces the same charge as well as a wire communication offence which carries a maximum five-year term.

Jeremy Hammond, aka "Anarchaos," of Chicago, faces charges of computer hacking, computer hacking conspiracy and another conspiracy charge, each of which carry a maximum ten-year sentence.

Zhang Weiyi, a supporting actress, has been accused of trying to seduce the married man.

On Wednesday, a netizen – nicknamed C Chami – posted an article together with a series of Zhang's photos online, claiming that the C-class actress was seducing her husband.

"Zhang had sent these pictures to my husband," C Chami wrote.

It is believed that C Chami found the photographs on her husband's online account but did not know who the woman was, as Zhang was not that famous.

Some netizens, however, have their own views. They believed it was merely a stunt to boost Zhang's publicity.

Zhang, who was a model, has played minor roles in several China-production TV series and films including the popular 32-episode Fen Dou (Struggle).

Another accomplice then ordered the victim to perform sex acts on them. She refused at first, but gave in after they threatened her.

The court heard that the girl was first targeted in early 2008 after she rejected one of the boys.

Their ringleader then decided to get his revenge. Telling his friends that he had seen people being possessed by 'Chinese gods' during temple visits, he suggested that they all pretend to have been taken over by spirits.

On one occasion, he used joss sticks to burn off a tattoo on an accomplice's finger to convince the girl and a friend that they were truly in the grip of gods.

A few months after the attack on the staircase landing, the victim sought professional help to deal with her depression, anxiety and insomnia, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy told the court.

A Child Guidance Clinic psychiatrist found that she suffered from mood swings.

She remains depressed, and experienced suicidal thoughts up until July 2010.

The victim, who is now 18, cannot even tolerate hearing the four boys' names, said Uthrapathy.

Pleading for leniency, defence lawyer Lee Teck Leng said that his client, who had earlier admitted his guilt, may have committed the offence because his IQ is just 73 - far below the average of 90 to 100.

He added that he did not plan or lead the attack, but was a mere follower who had been led astray by others.

"He was always acting on instructions, and his low IQ did not allow him to fully appreciate the stupidity and seriousness of what he was being asked to do," said Lee.

He told the court that his client, who has a quiet temperament, had suffered due to the 2 1/2-year delay before he was charged.

On Tuesday, the teenage boy's parents signed a S$5,000 (RM12,000) bond to ensure his good behaviour. He could have been jailed for up to 20 years, fined or caned.

The ringleader, who is now 17, and another 18-year-old accomplice have also pleaded guilty. They are waiting to be sentenced.

The fourth boy, aged 16, has been placed on 21 months of probation and ordered to spend three months at the Singapore Boys' Home.

Hi guys,

I'm going to purchase a Samsung Galaxy W android phone and need a recommendation on the plan i should take.

1. Very low call hours. My phone line usage is less than rm40-60 per month.

2. I need to use phone GPS service quite often, almost daily.

3. Doesn't really surf facebook/ videos. Mostly just on news reading sites.

So my problem is that i rarely make calls but use GPS quite heavily. Since i'm a first time android and data plan user, i don't know how much GPS will leech the bandwidth.

Hereby, i'm requesting opinions and advises from experienced users and plan users alike.

I've seen bundled package offered by U-Mobile as well for this phone models, but is it worth it? (low disc. but tied to contract)
