TVB 47th Anniversary Gala Recorded Lowest

TVB's 47th anniversary gala recorded its lowest viewer ratings in 17 years with its estimated audience dropping from around two million last year to 1.6 million.
There was speculation this was due to the launch of HKTV's web-based channel also on Wednesday but this was denied by TVB's corporate communication division deputy controller Tsang Sing-ming.

Tsang said the drop had been expected as this had been the trend for the past few years.

During the show, comedy star Wong Cho-lam, 34, proposed to his girlfriend Leanne Li Yanan, 29.

That section, with 26 viewer ratings, was not the highest for the whole program. The climax came when actor Chris Lai Lok-yi won the HK$1 million in the draw, which earned 28 viewer ratings.

From 1998 to 2012, the media giant's anniversary gala always maintained above 30 viewer ratings, but this dropped to 29 last year.

The average 1.6 million audience is equivalent to 25 viewer ratings.[/b

In mid-October last year, the Executive Council announced the release of two more licenses to Fantastic Television and Hong Kong Television Entertainment Co. HKTV's application was turned down.

Netizens questioned whether there was political consideration in the decision as they were dissatisfied with TVB's program quality. They said the programs lacked creativity and proposed turning off their televisions to boycott TVB last year.

HKTV, meanwhile, is now available on mobile gadgets.

A spokeswoman for HKTV said more than 640,000 devices, including TVs, phones and computers, are now able to watch HKTV programs.

She added that the HKTV app had been downloaded about 1.06 million times up to yesterday 723,000 on phones or tablets.

HKTV also apologized to supporters because some netizens could not access the HKTV app as the server was overloaded.

HKTV chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay said: "The strong support of people will push HKTV staff to be more united in our work. We feel regret and apologize to audiences because we failed to serve all of you. But we promise we will try our best to deliver hope and joy to every person."

TVB 'satisfied' with record low rating of 29 for anniversary gala

Overall ratings for TVB's anniversary gala fell below 30 points for the first time in a decade amid online efforts to organise a boycott of the annual show, with protesters staging a mock funeral outside the studios.

The rating of 29 points was well below the show's 1992 record of 43 and last year's 34, but TVB said it was satisfied with the result - equivalent to more than 1.8 million viewers and a 95 per cent audience share - "under the current atmosphere as a result of the issuance of the new free-to-air television licences".

The broadcaster said it would make good on its promise to donate over HK$3 million to charity as the show recorded a one-minute peak of 31 - 1.99 million viewers and a 97 per cent audience share. It had pledged to donate HK$100,000 for each rating point, provided the show topped 30.

Industry experts said the drop was most likely the result of a new method of measuring ratings that painted a more realistic picture of viewership.

TVB has been accused of "hegemony" by opposing the government's awarding of new free-to-air television licences.

The anniversary gala, which gathers the station's top talents and most popular television stars, is TVB's largest variety show of the year.

After the 1992 record - equivalent to 2.2 million viewers - the best the broadcaster achieved in the 2000s was 37 in 2002. Since 2003, the rating has lingered between 34 and 35. It dropped to 31 points in 2011, but climbed back to 34 last year.

Ray Wong, a member of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies' media committee and head of media agency PHD, said the rating corresponded to TVB's average prime-time rating for the year.

The viewer count was the first conducted by AC Nielsen, which this year took over the television rating survey from CSM Media. "The research methodology and technology have changed," Wong said. "Comparison with last year's 34 is unfair."

Wong said CSM used a sample size of 650 households, which Nielsen boosted to 800.

Chinese University journalism professor Anthony Fung said the call for an online boycott had little impact on ratings because "those who control the remote controls are older people who aren't netizens".

TVB host Nat Chan Pak-cheung, who had vowed to crawl home on his knees if the show got a three-point rating, said the drop was "independent of the Facebook boycott campaign".

"The final rating figures were in line with my predictions, which were made with reference to the 29-point rating of the Miss Hong Kong show," he said.

In an e-mail leaked to the press, Caritas, one of the charities on TVB's donation list, was accused of pressuring staff to watch the programme on Tuesday in order to receive the donation. Caritas director vicar-general Michael Yeung Ming-cheung said it was never the charity's intention to influence its staff's choices.

Pok Oi Hospital, another beneficiary, said it had yet to decide whether to accept the donation.

Japan "Black Widow" With Seven Death Partners

A 67-year-old millionairess was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of poisoning her husband with cyanide as it emerged six former partners had already died, in Japan's latest apparent "black widow" case.

Chisako Kakehi has been the beneficiary of a combined 800 million yen ($6.8 million) over the last two decades, Jiji Press said -- insurance money and other assets she received after the seven men's deaths.

Husband number four Isao Kakehi fell sick suddenly at home and was confirmed dead at a hospital in December last year, less than two months after the couple married.

An autopsy found highly toxic cyanide compounds in his blood.

That came after the September death of a 75-year-old boyfriend, who fell suddenly ill after the couple ate together at a restaurant, Jiji said.

Kakehi's dalliance with death began in 1994 when her first husband passed away at the age of 54.

In 2006 her second husband, whom she had met through a dating agency, died of a stroke aged 69, while the third marriage ended in 2008 with the death of her 75-year-old partner, Jiji said.

A boyfriend, believed to have been suffering from some form of cancer, died a year later, and in 2012 her then-fiance met his fate after collapsing while riding a motorbike.

Traces of cyanide were detected in his body, media reports said.

Kakehi was arrested Wednesday by police in Kyoto on suspicion of murdering her latest husband. She has denied any involvement in his death.

"We suspect she did it for money," a police investigator on the latest death said without giving details of the amount involved.

- 'Doomed by fate' -

Police are now working on the theory that she could have been behind the deaths of at least some of the other six.

"We can't say how many now... Given their advanced age, we have to proceed carefully to judge whether their deaths were actually the result of foul play or not," the investigator told AFP by phone.

Questioned by reporters earlier this year, former bank worker Kakehi protested her innocence.

"If people suspect murder, I'd find it easier to bite my tongue off and die," she told reporters in March.

Jiji Press quoted her as saying in an earlier interview that she was "doomed by fate" to suffer a series of deaths among those close to her, and protesting that she had no access to poison.

If she is found to have been involved in the deaths of numerous partners, Kakehi will become the latest example in Japan of a "black widow", named for the female spider that devours its mate after coupling.

In 2012 Kanae Kijima was sentenced to hang for the murders of three men, aged 41, 53 and 80, whom she met through Internet dating sites.

Kijima, who was at one time a paid-for mistress, poisoned her victims with carbon monoxide by burning charcoal briquettes after drugging them with sleeping tablets.

She is in jail awaiting the outcome of an appeal to the supreme court.

Another woman, former bar hostess Miyuki Ueta, is also waiting on the outcome of a supreme court appeal against a death sentence for the killing of two men.

Designer Tsung Chih-Hsien has created a Red Dot Design Award-winning concept for a tiny cardboard capsule that could juice up your phone. It's called the Mini Power. You just choose how much battery time you need—two, four, or six hours—plug it in, then recycle it later.

Tsung's biodegradable design, which he also envisions being purchased at convenience stores, eschews the plastic of most disposable batteries, which not only makes the case a little more environmentally friendly, but also saves on packaging. Since each Mini Power battery can just be broken off a perforated sheet, you could potentially buy them in bulk that way.

Disposable smartphone batteries aren't a new idea. They're especially prominent in Asia. Japanese convenience stores, for example, have been selling disposable batteries by the truckload for years. But these batteries tend to be environmentally unfriendly, not just because of the lithium ion batteries inside them, but because they come in plastic casings.

There's still the problem of the tiny battery inside each capsule, but Tsung imagines it would be recycled at the same convenience store you bought your Mini Power from. Drop one off, pick up a new one; rinse and repeat.

Disposable smartphone batteries are never going to be as good of an option as an external, rechargeable battery pack, but as Tsung's elegant concept shows, good design can do a lot to strip many of their evils away, while making them more attractive to consumers to boot.

Manchester United is to be transformed into a huge drive through cinema in the week leading up to Christmas.

From December 19 until Christmas Eve, the club will play host to the Magical Christmas Drive-In Spectacular which boasts the biggest LED screen ever seen in city.

Cinema fans will be able to enjoy a host of family blockbusters from the comfort of their cars, and fancy dress is encouraged to get everyone in the festive spirit.

Films on the schedule include a sing along version of Disney favourite Frozen, animation The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charles Dickens adaptation The Muppet Christmas Carol and comedy classic Elf, plus vintage movies Gremlins, Home Alone, White Christmas, It’s A Wonderful Life and Die Hard.

A Malaysian executive councillor has drawn criticism for suggesting that dishes served at Chinese banquets should be cut to prevent wastage.
State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh had proposed that dishes served at such banquets should be limited to five instead of the traditional eight, reported the New Straits Times.
His suggestion, however, has drawn the ire of members of the Penang hospitality industry and eatery operators.
They say that his suggestion goes against the norm observed by the Chinese community.
An assistant marketing communication manager of a Batu Ferringhi beach hotel, Ms Angeline Chen, 27, said Mr Phee's idea would not reduce food wastage.
She said: "A better way for Chinese restaurants to cut down wastage is to serve dishes in smaller portions at banquets.
"The traditional Chinese community is in favour of the number eight, as the number is auspicious and a sign of prosperity."
Law lecturer Tay Eng Siang, 45, described Mr Phee's suggestion as impractical.
He explained that it will not work as the authorities or the state government have no control over private functions.
"The state government should instead set an example during official functions to limit the dishes served in Chinese banquets before asking eateries and the public to follow suit," he said.
Mr Phee, when contacted, said his suggestion was misreported by a Chinese daily.
He said the traditional eight food items served during Chinese banquets are five main dishes, soup, entree and dessert.
He said that he had suggested doing away with one main dish to reduce wastage and save costs.
"It is not even a state-sanctioned proposal.
"I was just floating an idea on how to be thrifty and not be wasteful," he said

HKTV's Second Time Free To Air license bid

The Chairman of Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV), Ricky Wong Wai-kay, said on Wednesday that he was surprised to discover that about 250,000 people had already watched programs on his new web-based television station within seven hours of its launch.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the event, he also said he has not given up his fight to acquire a free-to-air broadcasting license after the government rejected his earlier application last year.
Wong, who subsequently made a second application, said he will find out whether he is successful at the end of next year.
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Greg So Kam-leung, who also attended the ceremony, said he had installed HKTV on five of his mobile and television devices to enable himself to watch programs from the new station.
He also said HKTV's free-to-air license application will be handled in accordance with regulations, adding that the government has always supported the development of creative industries. --RTHK

Pokemon Co To Offer Limited Shiny Charizard

The Pokémon Company will distribute Shiny Charizards for players in Tokyo to celebrate the opening of a new Pokémon Center. The special Pokémon will hold a Charizardite Y stone, enabling one of Charizard's Mega Evolutions, and is available for players who visit any Pokémon Center from December 12 to January 16 at alternating hours between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

A Shiny Pikachu will also be available. Players will need a copy of Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

The government is expected to pay RM558.69 million in compensation to highway concessionaires following its plan not to raise toll rates at 20 highways next year.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said 17 highways would receive their compensation next year and the rest in 2016.

“An allocation of RM458 million has been approved to the ministry to pay the compensation. An additional allocation will be sought in mid-2015,” she said when winding up debate at the committee level of the ministry on the Supply Bill 2015 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

She said the compensation was based on a formula which had been stipulated in the concession agreement and the actual amount would only be decided after the process of traffic verification by the Malaysian Highway Authority.

The highways involved in the postponement of toll hikes are the Ampang Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh), Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK), Storm Water Management and Road Tunnel (SMART), South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Sungai Besi Expressway (SBE), Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) and Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE).

Also the Kajang-Seremban Highway(LEKAS), Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), Maju Expressway (MEX), Damansara Puchong Expressway (LDP), New North Klang Straits Bypass (NNKSB), East Coast Expressway (ECE1), Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK), Cheras-Kajang Highway (Grand Saga), KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (LATAR), and Shah Alam Highway (LKSA).

In the meantime, Rosnah also said the construction of the third phase of the East Coast Expressway (ECE3) in Kelantan involving the Kuala Terengganu-Besut-Setiu-Kelantan alignment would be implemented in the 11th Malaysia Plan.

She said the East Coast Expressway involved three phases and only ECE3 had yet to begin construction.

She said based on Phase 1 of the Peninsular Highway Network Development Master Plan, the ECE3 project had the potential of being implemented under the privatisation system.

Meanwhile, she said, the ministry would not compromise with any concessionaire which was negligent in carrying out resurfacing projects especially pertaining to quality. — Bernama

On November 15th, netizens discovered that SM Entertainment had patented the name “Boys’ Generation” earlier this year. At first, many speculated that with so many new groups emerging every year, SM Entertainment merely wanted to hold the rights to the name to prevent another company debuting a group with a name so close to their most popular girl group. The netizen who made the discovery pointed out, however, that if SM Entertainment did not want another company utilizing a name similar to “Girls’ Generation” they would have taken measures 7 years ago with their debut. According to the original post, the patent for the name was finalized just this past June.
SM Entertainment debuted two new groups this year: Red Velvet and Beat Burger, but should we be expecting the debut of a “Boys’ Generation” from SM in the near future? Perhaps it could be the SM Rookies‘ future group name.
The company has been involved in several controversies this year, but is still holding strong. Recently, they released Super Junior-M’s Zhoumi‘s solo debut and fellow group member Kyuhyun’s first mini-album, both with great success. Despite ranking among the highest in a netizen poll on artist negligence and a drop in stock prices, perhaps SM Entertainment is on the rise once again.

Samsung Strikes Potentially Multi-Billion Dollar

Samsung Electronics agreed with Apple to produce application processors (APs) from next year for iPhones and iPads, sources said Monday.

The agreement means Samsung will become a primary supplier of APs to Apple, pushing its chief Taiwanese rival TSMC back to second place.

From 2016, the company will supply 80 percent of APs used in Apple devices, and TSMC the remainder.

Unlike conventional memory chips such as DRAMs and NANDs, APs are categorized as logic chips which give producers much higher margins.

AP chips function as the brain in computing devices. Apple will design its A-series APs, and Samsung will fabricate them in partnership with GlobalFoundries (GF), a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif.

“Apple has designated Samsung as the primary supplier of its next A-series chips powering iOS devices from 2016 as the alliance with GlobalFoundries (GF) enabled Samsung to cut off capacity risk,” a source familiar with the deal said.

The value of the deal is said to be worth “billions of dollars,” according to the sources.

Production of the APs will start early next year at Samsung’s local factory in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province, and the volume will grow as Samsung plans to use its facilities in Austin, Texas and the GF-owned factory in New York for increased output, another source said.

The resumption of business with Apple comes a month after the two companies agreed to drop all patent litigation outside the United States.

Samsung declined to comment about updates of its patent fight with Apple on the latter’s home-turf. Apple previously asked TSMC to make APs being used in the iPhone 6.

From a technology standpoint, Samsung has made a smoother transition to manufacturing customized chips by using a finer 14-nanometer FinFET processing technology, and the collaboration with GF lowered costs.

TSMC will ramp up production of chips using 16-nnometer FinFET technology.

Samsung’s technology is better in terms of efficiency and energy consumption.

At Samsung’s most recent earnings call, officials said that it is producing sample 14-nanometer chips for an unidentified customer.

They said that the firm will start mass producing the wafers for the chips either at the end of the year or early 2016.

“Samsung’s logic chip business division will get the S3 line equipment back from the memory business. The year 2015 will have a half-year contribution, while 2016 should have a full year contribution from 14nm for external customers,” said Bernstein Research in a note to clients.

IM Investment, a local brokerage, expects Samsung to win more orders to fabricate customized chips from Qualcomm, Nvidia and Sony, helping it generate more revenue to make up for its struggling smartphone business.

Samsung Electronics is shifting its focus to logic chips amid the rise of budget smartphones.

“Samsung has so far proved its capability in memory chips. Corporate clients were reluctant to depend on Samsung for logic chips. But the partnership with GF will allow Samsung to win more orders to fabricate customized chips,” said an industry official.

Samsung Electronics President Kim Ki-nam recently said the firm’s logic chip division will bolster its profits next year.

After a three-year run in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore has been announced as the new host of the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) today (Nov 17).

The cross-genre music festival, which typically features an eclectic mix of electronic dance music (EDM), hip hop and pop and rock acts, will be held on March 14 and 15 next year. The venue has not been revealed.

According to organisers The Livescape Group and Future Music Australia, the festival is expected to attract more than 50,000 fans across two days and is “set to feature its biggest line up to date”.

Brett Robinson, director of Future Music Australia said: “We will be announcing the biggest gathering of music superstars Singapore and the rest of South-east Asia has ever seen with over 50 international and regional acts on our bill.”

While the lineup has yet to be announced for FMFA, the roster for the parent Future Music Festival in Australia could provide some clues.

Huge international stars like Drake, Avicii and The Prodigy are expected to feature at the Australian edition, alongside big names in EDM like Martin Garrix, Afrojack and Knife Party. Rising star Kiesza, rapper 2 Chainz, and South African rap-rave act Die Antwoord are also on the list.

The decision to move FMFA across the causeway comes after drug overdose deaths at this year’s edition in Kuala Lumpur caused organisers to pull the plug on the last day of the three-day festival. The likes of Pharrell Williams and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were due to perform on day three as headliners.

Iqbal Ameer, Group Chief Executive of The Livescape Group said: “We’re confident that by moving FMFA across the causeway, we will be able to significantly provide not only a safe and fun environment for our guests but the festival will also still be within easy reach for our Malaysian fans whom throughout the years, we have grown very affectionate to.”

Limited early bird discounted tickets — for single day, two-day weekend pass and VIP categories — will be available for purchase from Nov 22 via www.galactix.asia/FMFA2015.

More details of the festival including its phase one line-up, venue, and regular ticket prices will be announced on Dec 1.

Iqbal added that the festival has plans to stay in Singapore for the long term and has set itself a target to become Asia’s largest music festival within the next three years.
