Memory Effect - NiMH battery

From Sony Brochure it reads: "Sony Battery Chargers offer 'Refresh function' that fully discharges the batteries before starting each recharge process. When a battery is not fully discharged of its residual energy, 'Memory Effect' occurs. This will reduce the overall energy capacity and performance of the battery over time. "

I always practise the above, and my Sony batteries (4x 2100mah) died after one year plus. (no funeral though)

Many saying that the REAL Memory effect does not exist in NiMH cell technology. For example in this article: http://www.dansdata.com/gz011.htm It actually claims that by fully discharged your batteries will shorten the lifespan of it.

Some points from the article:

"What people nowadays call memory effect (not the REAL scientific definition) is a combination of two things.

1) - cell aging. Batteries don't last forever. The older they get, the less capacity they have. Live with it.

2) - "voltage depression". Voltage depression is a problem with NiCd batteries and, according to some sources, also with NiMH, and it doesn't affect the battery capacity much at all. Rather, the battery voltage drops unusually quickly as it discharges. Gadgets that monitor their battery voltage therefore think the battery's flat earlier than they should. There may be lots of capacity left at the slightly depressed voltage, but the gadget doesn't know that and flashes its "low battery" warning.

Fully discharging cells cures voltage depression, but if you fully discharge a whole battery then the stronger cells in the battery will "reverse" the weaker ones. The weaker ones go flat first, and then get charged backwards by the others. This is very bad for the weaker cells, and will kill a battery pack quick smart. So don't do it."

I am abit confused now.

All i want is power, ...and power..comes responsibility... responsibility to save the planet..so dun trash ur faulty batteries. Keep it.

What do you think? Should we trust SONY?

Best Rechargeable batteries AA Kit for digicam

Hi i need a new set of rechargeable batteries kit for my digicam, any recommendation for a decent one? Budget RM200.

Previously i was using SONY rechargeable 2100 mah x 4 piece. I got it for 1 year plus and charged it for less than 40 cycles only meaning roughly 1.3 weeks charged once, and now all 4 Kong, it refused to eat power, so really lost confidence in sony rechargeable batteries.

I heard Energizer 1 hour charger with 4x 2500mah is quite durable and capable, but the problem is i can't find any place tat selling it in klang valley.

Thanks in advance for ur valuable feedback!
