UNIFI - large downloads keep getting interrupted

Hi all,

I've recently experience downloading of large files and video streaming keeps getting interrupted.

Background:
1) Been using the UNIFI 'tube' router for 6 month without problem until last week I keep getting ping timeouts to 8.8.8.8 and the UNIFI gateway itself. Physical link is ok. Technicians came an replaced it with a TPLINK Archer C5 and the timeouts have seem to be gone these past 3 days since it was installed.

2) Now my large downloads (mainly files more than 500MB) and video streams (via Kodi) keeps getting cut of - I've tried downloading from several reputable sites from US/UK/TW/MY - tried downloading UBUNTU, FEDORA, 600MB of firmware for my media player and a few test files (e.g. 2GB file test file from download.thinkbroadband.com).

3) When the downloads are cut off, pings from the download site are still ok and stable.

4) I've tried connecting 3 different laptops with various configurations (all relatively 'clean' installs without firewalls, anti-malware etc) DIRECTLY to the router via ethernet bypassing my internal network (it is straight laptop->router->modem->fiber). So it is safe to say this has nothing to do with my internal network or wifi.

5) I've checked whatever settings I can figure out and google for the Archer C5 (firewall off, no QOS, bandwidth management, no fancy routing/NAT etc etc).

6) Running on UNIFI 30MBPS - one of the very few in my neighbourhood so I do get 28-30Mbps download speed almost all the time.

7) Initially I thought there was something wrong with my KODI streaming/android media player as streaming videos would just stop after a few minutes - screen would go blank and it will not even buffer, kodi will then exit/crash. I've realized it's the stream being totally cut off when the same issue happen if I disconnect my ethernet cable while a movie is playing. Also it is pretty strange when downloads get cut off everytime at about the same 'place', e.g. the 600MB firmware I'm trying to download on mediafire will stop at about 87MB! Same goes with streaming (every few minutes) and the other stuffs I try to download. It downloads just fine when tethering on 4G network (much slower though).

Calling TM 100 is useless since my link is always up and stable and I as you all would guess it would be next to impossible to explain to the person on the other end of the line what I have written above. That being said they have reset my connection a few times.

Anybody has experienced this? Have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Marshall JVM-1h matching cabinet

Hi,

I have a Marshall JVM-1H amp and am currently hooking it up with a blackstar HT-112 cabinet. I'm thinking of getting a Marshall 1912 cabinet for the JVM (the smallest cab Marshall makes - I'm a bedroom player and space is lacking). The 1912 cabinet impedence is 8ohm.

My questions are:

1) The JVM-1H impedance rating is stated '16ohm (8ohm minimum)' in the manual and at the back of the amp - does this mean it will switch to 8ohm or it will stick to 16ohm when connected to an 8ohm cabinet?
2) Is there any sound quality difference when a head is hooked to a cab with unmatching impedence? I know it may damage the amps if the impedence difference is too much (this depends whether the amp is tube/solid state etc) but this shouldn't be a problem in my case.
3) Has anyone tried the JVM-1H (or any of the Marshall 1watt series - I assume all of them has the same '16ohm 8ohm(minimum) impedence) with the 1912 cab?

I wont be able to compare the sound between the HT-112 and 1912 plugged to the JVM-1H since the HT-112 has already been sold (buyer waiting) together with my Blackstar HT1R head (btw the Blackstar head+combo is awesome! but gotta make room for the Marshall).

Thanks!

Fake DVI dual link cables

Hi all,

Just want to share my experience with DVI cables so people will not get into the kind crap I had to go through - sorry if it's the wrong section or this has been posted before.

Be careful when buying DVI dual link cables - some of them may look like dual links (full 24 pins) but they are actually only capable of single link signals!

I recently purchased a 27inch Dell U2711 monitor which is capable of 2560x1440 resolution via dual-link DVI. The DVI cable was missing from the box (long story- I did not get it direct from Dell) but seller promised to give me a new DVI dual link once there is stock - I had a couple of DVI dual link cables lying around the house so I tried using them - all of them only managed to push 1280x1024 resolution to the monitor. Finally I used a DVI dual link cable that came with my ATEN KVM switch (it is meant for the connection between the KVM and workstation so it has audio and USB cables attached to it making it pretty messy) - this one finally worked!. Today the seller passed me a new DVI dual link cable as promised but when I tested, it too is only capable of 1280x1024 (I'm getting it replaced by them tomorrow). The pain I had to go through was that after testing a few so called 'dual link' cables I deduced that it was not a cable problem (unlikely 4 cables are defective right?) and proceeded to check everything else - the monitor, video card, KVM switch, drivers, settings etc etc.........

If you buy a DVI dual link cable make sure it is labelled as dual-link on the packaging - dont trust the number of pins (by right single link has 18 and dual link has 24) like I mentioned all my supposedly DVI dual link cables with 24pins (I have both D and I) except for one (free plug: ATEN makes high quality stuffs, I've been using their KVM for years) are not really dual link capable.

Anybody bought MIJ guitars straight from Japan?

Hi all,

I'll be going to Tokyo and thinking of getting a Japanese made guitar there (eyeing for Ibanez of maybe ESP). Has anyone bought an MIJ guitar from Japan? I was thinking it would be cheaper to buy there but from my surveys on the net - the prices in Japan seems about the same as US/UK.

cheers

Replacing the nut - will it lower the value?

Hi,

I have a Gibson Les Paul 2010 - superb guitar and have been nicely setup except the thing wont stay in tune for more than a few minutes. I've sent it to a reputable luthier, used lubricants on the nut, change gauge (currently running Gibson recommended .10) and all sort of other things. I've narrowed down the problem to the nut (99% sure). I can get my hands on some ivory nut (it's legal - the last kopek stock from a long time ago) and have a good luthier to install it. Thing is would it lower down the value of the guitar (it is a wear and tear component) assuming the luthier does a top notch job?

It seems tons of people are having the same issue as me, at least that's what Google told me. I think the original nut is made of nylon or corian.

How does the nut effects guitar tone?

Guys,

I've been told by several friends (some of them luthiers, some professional musicians- all otais) that the quality and type of nut effects the tone/sustain of a guitar/bass. Commonsense says that this is true when playing open string notes but would it also effect the tone/sustain when a string is fretted? Forgive my ignorance but I'm thinking that the vibrating part of the string (which produces the sound) will only be from the bridge to the fret which you put your fingers on.

Thanks

Wireless headphones with minimum latency/delay

Any of you guys can recommend a decent wireless headphone which has minimal latency and suitable for use while playing instruments? I am now using a cheapo phillips since that's the only one I could find that uses analog radio - but the sound quality really sucks. The good ones (AKG etc) I found so far are digital and has latency which will make you go crazy if used while playing any instruments.

Stompbox/pre-amps/active pickup battery usage...

Hi all,

I have an Ibanez bass with active pickups, an Ovation with pre-amps and a wah pedal which all uses 9v batteries. Thing is these devices do not have on/off switches and turns on automatically when plugged in. How much batteries do they eat at idle (when plugged in). I often leave them plugged for a while since it's cumbersome to unplug them every single time I stop playing. Sometimes I will forget and leave them plugged overnight or longer. Very leceh man.

Now I'm planning to get another wah to be connected to my HD500 FX loop - I really hate to have to unplug it everytime I'm done playing, using a power adaptor will just add to the mess of wiring and getting a power box will be an overkill for me since it will only be the HD500 and wah in the pedal box. If it eats only a tiny amount of current I'd rather leave it plugged and change batteries every now and then.

cheers.

Spring-loaded Wah Pedal

Hi,

I'm in the market for a spring-loaded Wah Pedal. I just put a WTB add in the trade section. It would be great if anyone can share on which are the good ones and their availability here (only spring-loaded ones). Reason that I want spring-loaded ones is because for tone reasons I'm quite happy with the ones provided in my Line6 HD500 but being a solitary-in-room only musician I spend a lot of time playing while sitting down and it's quite a pain to use the non-spring expression pedals in sitting position.

cheers.

Warrgghh! Need touch up pen for my LP

Got my Gibson LP Traditional Pro yesterday - first thing I did was to remove the pickguard. Thing is when one of the Americans (or probably some immigrant) screwed the pickguard back in the Nashville factory, some of the paint around the pickguard screw area was chipped. The area is black in color (it's a Vintage Sunburst). Anybody know where I can get one of them Gibson Touch Up pens (black) locally? Or should I just let a proper luthier look into it (I'm sending it for general setup, intonation and some slight buzz fix anyways). I'm not super anal about the finish but the paint chip is quite prominent and glaring . Quite dissapointing - for the price of these things they should at least put some soft washers around the area, Fender even put them between the strap buttons and body. Mata sakit, hati pun ada sakit and I swear it's effecting the tone

[attachmentid=2374328]

Was trying to learn Satch's 'Always with me always with you' last night - went through the tabs and a couple of youtube videos and I stumbled into this:

[YOUTUBE]6TIq6GwejJE[/YOUTUBE]

After watching this I felt like giving up the guitar - don't talk about playing the song, the little girl probably can hold a Les Paul while standing longer than me!!

[mod edit videolink]

DIY: Fender Superchamp XD footswitch

Been looking around for the Fender FM65DSP footswitch for my Superchamp XD amps without luck - none of the online sellers want to deliver to Malaysia, got a friend who went to US and GuitarCenter.com refused to sell to him cause due to it's scarcity they only sell it together with new amps. Found this [thread] and decided to build one using a BOSS FS-6 footswitch lying around the house as a donor chassis. Attached are some pics of the small project. Total cost less than RM8 (not including the FS-6 donor offcourse).

I wouldn't recommend using the BOSS FS-6 as a donor chassis (It's close to RM200) but for my case I didnt have any need for it and I've removed all the original components without damaging anything - I can easily re-assemble it back together and nobody will notice it has been tampered with. Anyways a nice plastic box (like the one used in the message board linked above) or metal box would probably only cost a few bucks.

[attachmentid=2208937]
[attachmentid=2208941]
[attachmentid=2208944]
[attachmentid=2208947]

Classical guitar nylon strings- how often change?

Guys,

I change my accoustic and electric guitar strings every few months depending on the condition (usually via visual or feel), about a year ago my kid started taking classical lessons and I got him a classical yamaha (first time I ever bought a classical guitar with nylon strings) - till now it is still using the factory fitted strings (god knows how long it was on the shelf until I bought it) , I can see the bass strings are showing signs of wear already but dunno about the nylon strings. How often do you normally change them?

thanks

Guitar wont stay in tune

Hi everyone,

I got my son an electric guitar a couple of weeks back (SX LP copy ) - problem is it wont stay in tune for more than a few minutes!! I have changed the strings (currently using Ernie Ball) - while changing them (and everytime I tune them) I would give the strings a good 'thug'. I have some experience re-stringing guitars so I think the windings on the machine head is okay. Have also 'sapu' some generous amount of pencil lead on the nut during the last re-string. I suspect the problem is the machine heads (I heard SX has a reputation for having crappy machine heads) - is there anything else I should check or any advise? If it is the machine heads giving problem what/where/how much can I get a decent set? (the guitar only cost RM600++ so it wont be feasible to spend too much on the machine heads).

The kid is only 11 and starting to pick up guitar, he gets really frustrated when it goes out of tune after hitting a few chords and lately have been turning back to his classical guitar (which he uses during his guitar class).

Thanks!
