BEIJING – Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi and her husband, Chinese rocker Wang Feng, have divorced after eight years of marriage.

The former couple issued the same statement separately at 3.42pm on Monday on their respective Weibo accounts, with each statement signed individually.

“After eight years of marriage, we have decided to dissolve our union after careful consideration and discussion,” said the statement. “We will raise our children together as family members and accompany them as they grow up.”

Refuting rumours of an affair, the statement said: “There is no dispute between us over who is right or wrong, and separation does not mean disappointment or betrayal. This is a decision made by two adults together, and we hope to get everyone’s understanding and support.”

The announcement came after a paparazzi Weibo account disclosed at about noon on Monday that Zhang and Wang had called it quits. Wang’s representatives hung up the phone when they were approached by the Chinese media on the reported split.

Zhang, 44, and Wang, 52, married in May 2015 and have a seven-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. Wang also has two daughters from a previous marriage and a previous relationship.

The former couple used to share snippets of their family life on social media, but netizens have noticed that they had hardly interacted with each other on Weibo for more than a year.

Zhang, who rose to international fame in Taiwanese director Lee Ang’s martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), has restricted access to her Weibo account to only the last six months. There was no mention of their wedding anniversary or his birthday in June in that period.

Meanwhile, Wang last posted a photo of the family in June 2022.

Billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam’s wealthiest man, joined the top ranks of Asia’s richest after shares of his electric vehicle maker Vinfast Auto surged 255% on the company's Nasdaq debut, adding a whopping $39 billion to his net worth.

The stock jumped more than threefold to close at $37.06 on its first trading day, off an intraday high of $38.77. The strong market debut boosted the net worth of Vuong, VinFast's controlling shareholder, to $44.5 billion. Vuong, who is also chairman of parent Vingroup, is now Asia's fifth richest person, according to Forbes’ data. Vuong other interests include real estate, retail, consumer electronics and healthcare through Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest conglomerate by market value.

VinFast started trading in New York on Tuesday through a backdoor listing by merging with Black Spade Acquisition Co., a special purpose acquisition company or SPAC founded by casino tycoon Lawrence Ho. The deal initially valued VinFast at $23 billion.

“With this listing we now have more access to capital to accelerate our mission as we undertake an international expansion and continue to introduce new products to make EVs more accessible to everyone,” Thuy Le, global CEO of VinFast said after ringing the opening bell on Nasdaq.

The company’s market value quadrupled to $85 billion, surpassing General Motors’ $46 billion and Ford’s $48 billion, while trailing behind U.S. EV giant Tesla’s market cap of $739 billion and Chinese rival BYD’s $93 billion.

Despite its spectacular debut, it remains to be seen whether the rally in VinFast can be sustained given the company’s small free float. Vuong controls 99% of the company through direct and indirect shareholdings, primarily through his publicly traded flagship Vingroup and other private holdings companies, according to regulatory filings.

From its manufacturing base in the port city of Hai Phong, about 120 kilometers east of Hanoi, Vinfast can produce as much as 300,000 cars annually. The company started shipping its vehicles to the U.S. in November to directly challenge Tesla in its home markets. Shipments to Canada and Europe are expected later this year.

Vinfast is building a factory in North Carolina that can produce about 150,000 cars annually by 2025. The company remains in the red even as it accelerates its international expansion, posting a wider net loss of 14.1 trillion dong ($588 million) in the first quarter of this year, compared to a loss of 9.7 trillion dong a year ago, according to its listing prospectus. In May, it recalled some vehicles due to a software glitch that U.S. authorities said may increase the risk of a crash.

Xiaomi Plans to 'Catch Up and Beat' the iPhone

Xiaomi Corp founder, chairman and chief executive Lei Jun on Monday said Apple’s iPhone remains the benchmark at the high-end of the global mobile phone market, as he downplayed the Chinese tech company’s previously stated goal of becoming the world’s largest smartphone vendor by 2024.

“Only by benchmarking with the iPhone can we stand a chance to catch up and beat it one day,” said Lei, who referred to Apple’s flagship device multiple times in his annual speech at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing where Xiaomi launched its latest products.

In his three-hour one-man show, 53-year-old Lei – with a net worth of US$10.2 billion as of August 15, according to Forbes – was cheered on by an audience of about 3,500, as he shared personal stories and reasserted Xiaomi’s commitment to go after Apple in the premium end of the smartphone market.

“Competition is extremely fierce in the consumer electronics industry,” he said. “Aiming for the high-end [of the smartphone market] forces us to seek breakthroughs in technology, while ensuring our future development and survival.”

Apart from targeting Apple, Lei’s rhetoric reflects the company’s bid to compete more aggressively against rival Chinese vendors at home, the world’s largest smartphone market, where an uneven post-pandemic economic recovery has resulted in weak consumer spending.

While mainland China saw 65.7 million handsets ship in the quarter ended June 30, which was a smaller 2.1 per cent decrease compared to the 14.8 per cent drop in the same period last year, the market was dominated by Oppo, Vivo, former Huawei Technologies budget smartphone brand Honor and Apple, according to data from research firm IDC.
Xiaomi, meanwhile, found itself tied in fifth place with a resurgent Huawei last quarter.

Still, Beijing-based Xiaomi ranked as the world’s third-largest smartphone vendor in the second quarter, behind Samsung Electronics and Apple, according to a report from Counterpoint Research. The report, however, indicated that Xiaomi faced headwinds in its two biggest markets, China and India, during the same period.

Lei, who is often dubbed “China’s Steve Jobs” by local media, on Monday made parallel comparisons about Xiaomi’s latest flagship foldable smartphone, the Mix Fold 3, with Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone 14 Pro Max.

But Lei refrained from mentioning Xiaomi’s ambitious target of becoming the world’s largest smartphone vendor, a goal that he first revealed in August 2021 after the company surpassed Apple to rank second behind Samsung in smartphone shipments in the second quarter of that year.

While Lei has attempted to paint Xiaomi as a major rival to Apple, the Chinese company’s total market capitalisation of HK$297.05 billion as of Tuesday pales in comparison to Apple’s market cap of US$2.82 trillion as of Monday. Xiaomi will release its second-quarter financial results on August 29.

In his speech on Monday, Lei said Xiaomi had an “extremely painful, but also fruitful” experience competing in the high-end segment of the smartphone market, which represents handsets priced above US$600, after its initial two premium models – the Xiaomi 10 and 11 – failed to meet sales expectations.

Prices for Xiaomi’s new Mix Fold 3 start at 8,999 yuan (US$1,240). Powered by Qualcomm’s second-generation Snapdragon processor and featuring an optical system co-engineered with German camera maker Leica, the company’s latest foldable smartphone was sold out in three minutes when pre-orders commenced at the conclusion of the event on Monday.

Korean Female Streamer Found Dead In Cambodia, Chinese Couple Arrested For Abandoning Her Body

According to news reports on June 11, KST, a Korean woman in her 30s was found dead in Cambodia on June 6. Shockingly, her body was discovered by locals, wrapped in a blanket, and dumped in a pond of a village near Phnom Penh, the country’s capital.
The Cambodian police started investigating the incident and identified the victim, “A,” as a Korean tourist. It was later confirmed that she is a famous BJ (broadcasting jockey) in South Korea, with more than 250,000 followers on social media.
The cause of death still remains undetermined. The Cambodian police told the media that they are investigating the possibility of murder and are waiting for autopsy reports to determine the exact cause of death.
The Korean police have confirmed that the victim had gone to Cambodia on a trip with an acquaintance and was treated at a local hospital. According to reports from Cambodia, the police there have arrested a Chinese couple who own the hospital where “A” was treated. Based on witness statements, it appears that the two abandoned the victim’s body at the pond after she died at their hospital.
Though the specifics of the victim’s identity are not confirmed, based on a blurred photo of her Instagram page that was displayed on the news, it is being presumed that “A” is BJ Ah Yeong.
