Hong Kong cannot "live with Covid”, must "Covid-0"

Hong Kong cannot adopt the “living with Covid-19” strategy, or it will be even harder for the city to reopen its borders, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor told lawmakers.

Countries like Singapore and United Kingdom have adopted such a strategy, moving their emphasis to increasing vaccination rates instead of having no Covid-19 cases. On the other hand, the mainland still maintains the goal of having zero local cases.

In a question and answer section at the Legislative Council, Lam said situations abroad are still worrying.

As for how Hong Kong can fit into the “living with Covid” trend going on overseas, Lam said she is confident that Hong Kong can stop imported cases from entering local communities. She added that she will discuss reopening borders with the central government, but “living with the virus” is definitely not on the agenda. "Hong Kong is still aiming at zero local infection," Lam said.

Starry Lee Wai-king, the chairperson of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, asked what exactly Hong Kong has yet to fulfill that makes Beijing reluctant to reopen borders.

Lam said that she has been reflecting Hong Kong people's demands on reopening, and stressed that the Covid outbreak in Hong Kong is now well under control, with no local infections for more than 21 days.

The government has been very strict on preventing imported cases, so strict that it has been criticized by some chambers of commerce and foreign consulates. "Strict enforcement of imported cases is necessary as outbreak is still prevalent in many foreign countries," Lam said.

Lam added that vaccination is still an effective way to prevent the virus. The slowdown in vaccinations is worrying, she said, and called upon members of the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Pro-vax Trump urges supporters to be vaccinated

At his rally in Alabama on Saturday night, Donald Trump heard the unusual sound of booing and jeering aimed his way, after he told supporters: “I recommend taking the vaccines.”

The former president was speaking in Cullman, Alabama, a city struggling to cope with Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations.

Like other states home to resistance to vaccinations and other public health measures often stoked by Republican leaders, Alabama is at the mercy of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

“I believe totally in your freedoms,” Trump said. “I do, you’re free, you got to do what you have to do.

“But I recommend taking the vaccines. I did it, it’s good, take the vaccines.”

Trump was vaccinated while in office, having been hospitalised with Covid-19 last October. He has told supporters they should follow suit.

In Alabama, responding to boos and jeers, he said: “That’s OK. That’s all right. That’s good, you got your freedoms.

“But I happen to take the vaccine. If it doesn’t work, you’ll be the first to know. OK.”

Ahead of the Trump rally, local authorities said they feared a super-spreader event.

According to AL.com, Luke Satterfield, an attorney for the city, said: “We want to prevent as many non-Covid related things as possible, so our hospital can use its resources to focus on the pandemic and its variants. We don’t want to put any extra strain on them.”

As the Delta variant surges across the US, hospitalisations and deaths from Covid-19 are overwhelmingly among the unvaccinated.

In Alabama, the state hospital association said this week that 85% of hospitalized Covid-19 patients were unvaccinated. Alabama is also seeing a surge in Covid cases among children. The state this week had 50 children hospitalised with Covid-19.

Dr Karen Landers, a pediatrician with the Alabama health department, told the Associated Press she was “very concerned … children can and do contract and spread Covid-19”.

Elsewhere on Saturday the Republican governor of Texas, another state struggling with Covid cases and political turmoil over public health mandates, said he had tested negative for Covid-19 four days after testing positive.

“I’m told that my infection was brief and mild because of the vaccination that I received,” Greg Abbot said, in a video posted to Twitter. “So I encourage others who have not yet received the vaccination to consider getting one.”

Liew Chin Tong: Noor Hisham should be REPLACED

PETALING JAYA: The survival of the next government hinges on its success in reducing the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths, DAP’s Liew Chin Tong said.

Hence, getting public health leadership right is a crucial test for the new prime minister. This includes appointing a competent health minister, he said.

The former deputy defence minister said that while the important ministries were traditionally those of finance, home, and defence, the Covid-19 pandemic has made the health ministry a crucial one.

The new health minister should be a highly competent political leader to enable confident and effective communication of difficult health policy changes to the Cabinet, and more importantly, to the public, he said.

Liew also called for the health minister to handle the coordination of the vaccination programme.

“While Khairy Jamaluddin did a great job under the previous Perikatan Nasional-led administration, he was hampered by the fact that he wasn’t running the health bureaucracy.

“We need to reform the healthcare system beyond Covid-19. The pandemic exposes all the existing weaknesses which would require leadership, political will and vision to rebuild,” he said.

Liew also wants the current health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah replaced, citing several of the latter’s “bad calls” which had major repercussions.

This included the delay in approving vaccines by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and test kits by the Medical Device Authority (MDA), which Noor Hisham oversees.

“The health DG’s insistence on using RT-PCR tests and hesitancy to deploy RTK-Antigen tests slowed down testing significantly,” he said.

Liew went on to say there was also a need for strong a civil service in the health sector and this could be done by placing experts at all levels of the ministry.

The finance or procurement heads in the health ministry need not only be good in finances, but must have sufficient knowledge and understanding of medical devices.

“There is a need to find a way to develop expertise and specialisation in the generic civil service.

“Perhaps the health ministry is where new arrangements could be implemented first, given the importance of public health now and in the years to come.”

FMT: Muhyiddin to be made minister mentor?

PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin, who just resigned as the prime minister, could end up as minister mentor if Ismail Sabri Yaakob is appointed to the post, according to talk among political circles.

And it now seems likely that Ismail has the numbers to become the interim prime minister.

This follows reports that all 42 Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs have unanimously agreed to back the Umno vice-president for the post, although some had earlier said they would not lend their support.

Bersatu and PAS have also said they would back Ismail.

In addition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak leader Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told FMT this morning that the Sarawak coalition had agreed in principle to support Ismail for the post.

With this, Ismail, who served as Muhyiddin’s deputy for just over a month, has likely secured sufficient backing from MPs in his bid to be named interim prime minister.

There are strong rumours that if Ismail does become the prime minister, Muhyiddin, who is currently the caretaker prime minister, will be brought into the Cabinet as minister mentor.

An indication that something is brewing was given in remarks made by Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan to Utusan Malaysia. Wan Saiful was reported as saying that Muhyiddin was expected to bring some “good news” this morning.

However, it remains to be seen if such a move will be accepted by the Umno grassroots.

Meanwhile, the Facebook pages of Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan and information chief Shahril Hamdan were flooded with comments criticising the decision to back Ismail after they announced that BN was naming Ismail for interim prime minister.

Facebook user Shahril Thulus questioned why Umno had retracted its support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government if it was going to back Ismail, as he was already Muhyiddin’s deputy in the administration.

Another netizen, Khairul Affendy Salleh, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party’s Supreme Council were outsmarted by Ismail, whom he described as Muhyiddin’s “proxy”.

“Ismail is Muhyiddin’s proxy, that’s why he was made deputy prime minister. It won’t be long before Zahid and Najib will be done. Just watch,” he posted.

Comments on other pro-Umno pages were more hard-hitting, describing it as “PN 2.0” and being just a change of leader.

Nor Fazila Mohamed said the Umno leadership failed to heed the voice of the grassroots by nominating a minister who had failed to perform in his portfolio despite his senior position in the PN government.

“Wait for Umno to be tied up in a dead knot come GE15,” she said.

Another day of work, another day for him to get by. The alarm rang at 5 a.m. He woke up feeling a heavy sore surging through his body because of an incident that happened the day before. Nobody knew he had been driving for 12 hours straight, every single day for the past year. His usual routine includes his simple breakfast at 5.30 a.m, followed by lunch at 8 p.m. The pain in his back and the hunger in his stomach were nothing compared to the worries in his mind: "Will I make enough deliveries today to cover the bills?"

It was a fine Thursday, he made a few deliveries for all kinds of cuisines. And then came an order for Spade's Burger. He let out a huge sigh, he never liked delivering orders from Spade's or myBurgerLab (you know how long the queue can get). Customers were always rushing him to get the food there "faster". But how fast can you wait, when there are 10 other drivers waiting to deliver to their customers as well?

6PM - It was almost time for dinner but he wanted to take one last job for the day before he went home to have dinner with his kids. Then the next notification came in: -

The job was from Sopoong, a Korean food restaurant. It took him less than 5 minutes to get to the restaurant. He then went in to greet the owner and inform him of the orders. The owner looked him up and down with a displeased look on his face and said, "𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲"

So, the waiting begins...

[30 mins later] the first message from the waiting customers arrives:

The grab driver started to panic and went into the restaurant to follow up with the order, just to be greeted with a glare. The restaurant owner raised his voice, "𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗬! 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲!"

The grab driver apologized and explained to the customer that his order was still in preparation. Then came the next reply:

"𝗜'𝗺 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚"

The grab driver waited another 20 minutes before the food was ready. He quickly grabbed the food and drove as fast as he could. When he saw the customer, the first thing he did was apologize, "I'm sorry sir, the kitchen was very busy and I tried my best-" before he was cut off with:

"𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗝𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗡 𝗞𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗝𝗔𝗥"

The grab driver was stunned and didn't know what else to do except to pass the food. What happens next?

The customer took the packaging that includes a piping hot bowl of soup and threw it back at the grab driver.

It was a really long day for the driver. He felt tired, confused, and upset. It's not the first time he was greeted with harsh remarks, curses, and impolite customers. Instead, he reminds himself to be grateful only because he still has a job during this pandemic.

And before you wonder any further - how do I know this story? Because the grab driver is my father. He was 2 hours late for our dinner. His clothes were damp. His skin had burnt spots. His eyes were puffy.

He carries all these frustrations and emotional scars in his heart, it pains me to share the fragments and details of this story.

It hurts me, even more, knowing that my father is the victim of emotional and physical abuse. Could you stand to see your father get bullied and all you could do is pat them on the back and tell them 'everything is going to be okay?'

Nobody knows when MCO will end. Many families are suffering, many businesses are feeling the pinch. Many hopes and dreams are crushed - and there's not much we can do to reverse our fate from this nasty, unforgiving pandemic.

This is what Grab drivers have to go through daily. They wait for hours, risk their lives on the road to deliver food - only to be treated with disrespect, emotional abuse, an endless string of insults while being at the mercy of an app that users can rate depending on their mood & standards.

The end of something usually indicates new beginnings! This rings true for our badminton men’s singles shuttler, Lee Zii Jia’s quest for a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which has unfortunately come to an end. Despite being unable to bag a medal, his determination, spirit and dedication shone through all the adversities faced throughout the Olympics. Not only that, in the midst of the pandemic, he has united Malaysians from all walks of life, cheering him on throughout his game with current world number one, Chen Long! This is a magnificent feat by itself.

Signalling the start of new beginnings, Lee is working together with OPPO to produce a song titled, “Ten Thousand Emotions, in Portrait”（一万种情绪) — the latest initiative by OPPO in conjunction with the launch of the OPPO Reno6 Z. This comes hand in hand with his vow to Malaysians far and wide to come back stronger for the 2026 Paris Olympics (WRONG lel, next olympics is 2024, HYPE typed salah).

With the whole of Malaysia supporting him wholeheartedly, this project would serve as a way for Lee to express his heartfelt gratitude to his countrymen. It should be noted that this is an original song performed by Lee, himself! This might come as a surprise to many but, when he’s not shuttling on the badminton courts, this 23-year-old of many talents could be seen singing covers on both Instagram and Douyin (the Chinese TikTok). Talk about being multi-talented!

So, it is no doubt that this would be soothing to listen to as he strums the guitar while belting it out! Dubbed as an ode to Malaysians, this song would consist of moments ranging from bitter and painful episodes to even sweet and victorious ones, throughout his journey thus far!

Penang clinics get huge response over Sinovac vac

GEORGE TOWN: A private clinic chain here has received over 9,000 Sinovac vaccine bookings.

The O2 clinic, which has eight branches on Penang island and the mainland, will officially begin the vaccination drive today.

Its marketing executive Cathy Ooi said a trial run was held on the weekend and more than 50 people turned up to get their vaccines at RM350 for both doses.

“Many of those who registered, other than individuals, are from companies and organisations,” she said.

She said they have a supply of more than 5,000 vaccine doses and would obtain more.

Ooi also said the vaccination exercise would be conducted over the next few months until all those who had registered were inoculated.

“For now, we are not vaccinating any walk-ins because there is a high number of people who have registered.

“Their MySejahtera app would be updated accordingly once the dosages are dispensed,” she said.

Klinik Bersatu and its chain of clinics said they already have more than 200 people registered with them at their Lip Sin Garden branch.

“We will administer the Sinovac vaccine from mid-August at RM380 per person for both doses,” said a senior nurse there who only wanted to be known as Ooi.

“A small discount will be given to those who bring another person (need not be family members) and they only need pay RM370, or RM360 each if they bring three people. A further discount at RM350 per person will be given for a group of 10 or more,” she explained.

Ooi added that for now the vaccination exercise would only be done at their Lip Sin branch.

Penang health committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin said the sale of the Sinovac vaccine was a private deal between Pharmaniaga Bhd and private clinics and hospitals.

“The price of RM350 is a fair one as the state government was also quoted the same price when it wanted to purchase the vaccine then. But we decided against it. In the end, the duration of getting the supply was longer than expected,” she said.
