Picture: BT/Bahrum Ali

Bahrum Ali
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, June 17, 2012

FOR small-time food vendor Latiffah Ahmad, where there is a will there is a way.

Speaking to The Brunei Times recently, Latiffah, who had just opened a stall at Tamu Serbaneka Kampung Mulaut, said she was lucky to be granted a stall there.

"Although my small business is still struggling, it is even more of a struggle without having a business," she said.

She explained that she is supporting her four children and her husband, who is ill. Latiffah said she has no choice but to take over the burden of breadwinning.

"Our life is quite hard without any income. To seek support from others will not solve our problem in the long run, so I find myself a better solution by looking for it myself," she said.

At her stall, she sells Nasi Katok and fritters in the afternoon.

"This is the menu that I could provide at a minimum cost. In the mean time, I will have to see what I can add to the menu to earn more," she said.

As popular as they are, Nasi Katok and fritters do not give Latiffah the kind of profits that can help her support her family.

However, she said that it is considered sufficient if she makes $30 a day. Luckily for her, the monthly rental for her stall had been reduced from $30 to $15 a month.

"At least it helps alleviate my monthly expenses," she said, expressing her gratitude to the authorities for bringing the rental fees down.

One of the reasons Latiffah has not been making as much money as she likes is due to competition surrounding her stall, where more or less the same food is on offer by other vendors. "But that is not an excuse," she insisted.

Nevertheless, she said that she is determined to look for ways to overcome losses and generate some revenue.

"If some body give me fish, it will finish in a day. But if I have the right equipment and fishing techniques, I believe I will get more fishes everyday."The Brunei Times

In a country albeit MUCH smaller than ours, with higher GDP, better welfare, and less resource than ours, the national media can still highlight the plight of the poor and their challenges. Meanwhile back in Malaysia, the bogeyman is the 'rich' Chinese or Indians or immigrants and forever calling the Malays poor to justify their logic and nothing done in the past 30 years since Tun Kutty the Dawg's rule. TOTAL FAILURE.

QUOTE

Plague confirmed in Oregon man bitten by stray cat
By NIGEL DUARA and STEVEN DUBOIS, Associated Press
Jun. 15, 2012 2:22PM PDT

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Health officials have confirmed that an Oregon man has the plague after he was bitten while trying to take a dead rodent from the mouth of a stray cat.

The unidentified Prineville, Ore., man was in critical condition on Friday. He is suffering from a blood-borne version of the disease that wiped out at least one-third of Europe in the 14th century — that one, the bubonic plague, affects lymph nodes.

There is an average of seven human plague cases in the U.S. each year. A map maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that most cases since the 1970s have been in the West, primarily the southwest.

The plague bacteria cycles through rodent populations without killing them off; in urban areas, it's transmitted back and forth from rats to fleas. There's even a name for it, the "enzootic cycle."

The bacteria thrive in forests, semi-arid areas and grasslands, which plague-carrying rodents from wood rats to rock squirrels call home.

Once a coin flip with death, the plague is now easier to handle for humans in the U.S. The national mortality rate stood at 66 percent before World War II, but advances in antibiotics dropped that rate to its present 16 percent.

Central Oregon health officials don't blame the cat.

"The reality is that, in rural areas, part of the role of cats is to keep the rodent population controlled around our homes and barns" said Karen Yeargain of the Crook County Health Department.

The Prineville man, who is in his 50s, remained in critical condition Friday at a Bend hospital. His illness marks the fifth case of plague in Oregon since 1995.

State public health veterinarian Dr. Emilio DeBess told The Oregonian (http://is.gd/XkSL7Y ) that the man was infected when he was bitten by the stray his family befriended. The cat died and its body is being sent to the CDC for testing.

DeBess has collected blood samples from two dogs and another cat that lives with the man's family, the newspaper reported. DeBess also collected blood samples from neighbors' pets and from animals in the local shelter to determine whether the area has a plague problem.

More than a dozen people who were in contact with the sick man have been notified and are receiving preventive antibiotics.

http://health.yahoo.net/news/s/ap/plague-c...en-by-stray-cat

QUOTE

Report: Apple mulling second Israeli facility after Anobit purchase
By Daniel Cooper posted Jan 25th 2012 10:19PM
It looks like Apple's acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans -- business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It's unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. It's reportedly going to be based in the Matam Technology District, south of Haifa, adjacent to similar facilities operated by Microsoft, Intel and Philips. It's already received hundreds of resumes for engineers: it's looking for those with specific know-how in chip development, hardware testing and verification. The new complex is to be kept separate from Anobit, with no communication allowed between the two teams. Another tidbit that emerged from yesterday's conference call was that Bob Mansfield is integrating Anobit's team into Apple's, but company founder Ehud Weinstein will depart for pastures new -- much in the same way that some of Intrinsity and PA Semi's staff departed after being swallowed by Cupertino's cash.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/25/report-...cility-planned/

Chinese con. buys CCB

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/BUSINESS/09/04...b.ft/index.html

QUOTE

Chinese consortium buys CCB stake

(FT) -- A Chinese consortium was the biggest buyer of the China Construction Bank stake that Bank of America sold last month, according to several people familiar with the deal.

The State Administration of Foreign Exchange, which manages most of China's $3,200bn in foreign reserves, the National Social Security Fund, and Citic Securities bought the CCB shares.

Bank of America sold 13.1bn shares in the Chinese lender -- half of its 10 per cent holding -- generating $8.3bn in cash for the troubled US bank, and increasing its tier one capital buffer by $3.5bn.

The Chinese government's involvement comes as domestic bank shares are under pressure due to big capital raising exercises. Beijing asked Bank of America to sell only half its holdings in CCB, China's second-largest bank by market capitalisation, the people added.

A person close to BofA said selling more of the CCB stake "would have been largely incremental" in reinforcing the bank's capital position "so it made sense to structure the sale the way we did". He added that not all of the shares could be sold until next year "so selling the entire position was not an option".

Chinese bank shares have fallen 11 per cent in the past month despite reporting impressive earnings because of fears of dilution from expected rights issues. According to Citigroup, Chinese banks have not had such low valuations since the global financial crisis hit.

In August, CCB reported first-half pre-tax profits of Rmb93bn ($14.6bn), a 31 per cent rise over the same period last year, but the lender's share price has fallen 30 per cent from its highs earlier this year.

The Chinese involvement was kept closely under wraps. Safe, which operates with great secrecy, worked with Hopu Capital, the Beijing investment firm established by Fang Fenglei.

Safe, which operates with great secrecy, used Hopu Capital, the Beijing investment firm established by Fang Fenglei, to mask its participation.

China's National Social Security Fund, which was established in 2000 to cover unfunded government pension liabilities, had $114bn under investment at the end of 2009, according to the Pacific Pension Institute. It has made a compound annualised return of 9.75 per cent since inception.

The Chinese buyers joined with the sovereign investment arms of Singapore and Qatar to buy the CCB stake. Temasek, the Singapore state investment agency, raised its holding in CCB to about 7 per cent. In early July, Temasek sold over $1bn of CCB shares through Morgan Stanley at a price that was much higher than the level at which it bought shares last week.

Temasek's CCB deal and a separate agreement to purchase a block of shares in Bank of China has prompted criticisms in China that the Singapore sovereign wealth fund was acting like a hedge fund by investing shortly after selling part of its stake in each of the two Chinese banks in early July.

Temasek declined to comment. However, the series of deals is in line with the fund's guiding charter, which says it is "an active value-orientated investor that may increase, reduce or hold its investments in companies or other assets".

Aside from Singapore and Qatar, other sovereign funds, including some that were burnt by investments in big global financial institutions in 2007 and 2008 did not participate in the CCB sale.

No large international private equity firms were involved in the deal, although TPG, among others, has close relations with Safe.

"Our investors would kill us if we took a $500m piece of CCB, and got a stake of less than 1 per cent," said the Asia head of one big buy-out firm. International hedge funds were also excluded from the deal, since China prefers to sees the shares of its icons in the hands of long term, friendly holders.

Citic Securities declined to comment.

Additional reporting by Kevin Brown in Singapore

© The Financial Times Limited 2011

QUOTE

Dear E. Jean: I’ve been married four months, and I’m still a virgin. Every time I try to initiate something, my husband won’t allow me to take off my bra or panties. My job is to satisfy him with oral sex, and that’s it. I’ve tried showing him movies and books and talking to him. Nothing works. The one time I removed my bra, he asked why my breasts “sagged.” I’m considered by other people as beautiful, slim, fair, etc. We’re both from India, and we were married outside the United States. I’m in grad school here on a student visa, and he’s here training with an American company. I don’t want to suffer this way!—Save My Life

Reply

QUOTE

Dear Miss Save: The lad is not ready for marriage. Indeed, I was just about to tell you that life is too short for you to plead another moment for the love of this abysmal boy when I spoke with the very lively family-law attorney Vinaya Saijwani ( Saijwanilaw.com), who disagreed with my advice and counseled: “Don’t jump the gun on the divorce. He sounds like he has problems, but he may turn out to be a perfectly good husband. Traditional Indian men may start out as repressed mama’s boys who have contempt for women who ask for intimacy, but they end up making very good, responsible husbands and fathers.” Miss Saijwani suggests you see an Indian counselor, and then if things don’t improve and you decide to divorce, “do not go back to India.”

“But that’s a heartbreaking decision!” I cried. “Her freedom or her country?”

“Divorced women are not that well regarded in Indian society,” said Miss Saijwani. “It would be difficult for her to find another husband there. She should stay in America, get an education, get a job, and make a life here.”

I guess if Brooks & Dunn can wait 20 years to split up, you can take a little time with an Indian counselor and ponder the next step. But I still don’t like the dolt you married.

[addedon]March 28, 2011, 12:33 am[/addedon]http://www.elle.com/Life-Love/Ask-E.-Jean/Ask-E.-Jean-I-m-Married-But-Still-a-Virgin?cid=el:otb:lifelove:Ask-E-Jean-Im-Married-But-Still-a-Virgin:

From there, shipments are then loaded to another vessel that is allowed to dock at Sabah.

Malaysiakini.com quoted FSM President Datuk Seri Wong Khen Thau as saying that cost of imports would be reduced by almost half if the federation used Muara Port.

"One container load between Muara and Sabah by a chartered vessel has been worked out to be about RM$1,200 ($525), compared with the present RM$2,600 ($1,130) from Port Klang," Wong said, adding that the RM$1,200 could be lowered even further if chartered ships call at Singapore and Port Klang on their return journey, instead of going home empty. The FSM is studying the feasibility of using Muara Port to help Sabah circumvent the NCP and bring prices down.

"The NCP, despite being partially liberalised recently, is still no help to the business community in Sabah as it still restricts foreign ships from directly calling at our ports," the website quoted Wong as saying.

It is said that the NCP is holding back the industrialisation and economic development of Sabah and Sarawak shortly after the formation of Malaysia, as well as for steep prices and the higher cost of living in the two states.

Thomas Koh, head of the Bimp-Eaga Business Council's (BEBC) Transport, Infrastructure and ICT Development Cluster, told The Brunei Times that should the FSM plan materialise, it would be a positive for Brunei's port.

"But we have to be ready to accommodate them, to lock them in, meaning we have to look at our connectivity and infrastructure," said Koh.

Likewise, General Manager Rico Cruz of New Muara Container Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (NMCTS), the operator of the Muara container terminal, said if Sabah does come in, it would be good news for Brunei.

FSM's Wong said that 70 per cent of Sabah's imports are from China and nearby countries, and hence should go directly to the state, instead of being routed through Port Klang at a much higher cost.

"Since that cannot happen under the NCP, FSM favours these imports coming to Sabah through Muara Port, since it is outside the jurisdiction of the NCP," Malaysiakini.com quoted him as saying.

Wong added that a sea-link between Brunei and Sabah's ports is needed even though goods from Muara can also be transported by land towards Sabah.

BEBC's Koh said that the Intelligent Clearance Identification (i-CLID) project is to facilitate activities like these.

Currently, barges are already being used to transport, cement, stones, sand and other building material from Kota Kinabalu to Muara for Brunei's development activities.

The project makes use of radio frequency identification (RFID) and web technology to increase trade investment and tourism in the sub-region.

FSM figures show that Kota Kinabalu needs four to five ships every week with a capacity between 500 to 700 containers to fulfil their needs.

The Ports Department statistics show that Muara Port, in 2009, handled 927,916 tonnes of cargo.

NMCTS in a previous statement said it handled 43,650 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the first half of 2010, as opposed to 40,013 TEUs in 2009.

The number of vessel arrivals, or ship calls, rose 10 per cent to 216 from 196 over the same period.

Port Klang, Malaysia's biggest and busiest port, handled a total of 8.87 million TEUs in 2010.

The Brunei Times

Summary is bolded lines...
http://www.bt.com.bn/news-national/2011/03...argo-muara-port

Unless demand picks up, this will put pressure on rents,” he said.

According to a January report by DTZ Research, there was no new addition to the office stock in Kuala Lumpur in the fourth quarter of 2010 (Q410) as some of the expected completions were delayed to 2011.

“There was, however, a reduction in total stock of 500,000 sq ft due to the demolition of two old office buildings for redevelopment,” it said.

It said the office market continued to experience active enquiries but the take-up of space declined due to relocations outside the city and consolidations.

“As a result, the overall occupancy rate of office buildings in Kuala Lumpur decreased from 87.1% in Q3 2010 to 86.4% in Q4 2010.”

According to DTZ, office rents in Q410 continued to face downward pressure, with average prime office rents dropping marginally from RM5.98 per sq ft per month in Q310 to RM5.97 per sq ft in Q410.

Khong & Jaafar Sdn Bhd managing director Elvin Fernandez said he expected office rents to hold in the next three to six months. “I don’t think it will rise much. At best, it will hold,” he said.

DTZ said there was about 13.23 million sq ft of new office space in the pipeline between 2011 and 2013, the majority of which was scheduled for completion in 2012.

“In addition, there is an announcement for a proposed 100-storey office by Pemodalan Nasional Bhd of 2 million sq ft that will put further pressure on future competition.”

It said the effort to target 100 multinational companies to have a presence in Malaysia and the proposed commencement of high impact infrastructure projects such as the MRT and the extension of the LRT lines would spur growth in office demand in the long term.

“However, the outlook for the sector is expected to remain soft in the next few years as it will take time to increase demand with these new initiatives while there is a substantial amount of new supply coming up, most of which are of a speculative nature.

“The expected forthcoming general election may cause a short period of uncertainty in the short term as companies may want to remain uncommitted until the political situation is clearer,” said DTZ.

How to choose a bride
How to choose a bride the Malaysian style

The story begin at Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A mother was very concerned that her middle-aged son has not shown the
slightest indication of getting married.
So one day she called him over to her house. The son came home from work,
grudgingly. Upon arriving, he found that his mother had gathered a few
beautiful ladies at the house for him to choose as his future bride.
The first one was a well-endowed telephonist-cum-receptionist..
He immediately commented that : - "Aiyaa...mother, they always
say....PLEASE HOLD ON, HOLD ON....."
The second nominee was a leggy secretary. This was rejected also. Reason being :- "Aiyaa...mother, this one aaa..., secretary always fond
of saying "PLEASE SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN...."
By this time, the mother is nearing frustration. She called a sweet but
plain-looking teacher. The son suddenly agreed!!
The mother was surprised & asked:- "Why this one? The previous two were a lot more better looking!"
He replied :- "Teachers aaa.... teachers very good, always say:-
"PLEASE REPEAT, DO IT AGAIN, I Want it done 10 times... SOME MORE, SOME
MORE..!"
Her youngest son (12 years old), was listening quietly all this while at the other end of the room. Suddenly, he shouted:- "Brother....female bus conductor more better laa....they always say.. "NAIK CEPAT,NAIK
CEPAT...MASUK,MASUK..... MASUK LAGI, DALAM LAGI...DALAM LAGILAAAAH,
MASUK BELAKANG....BELAKANG LAGI,.....BELAKANG BANYAK KOSONG!..........."
40 years of marriage

40 years of marriage..

A married couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 40th wedding

anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. She said, 'For

being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other

for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.'

The wife answered, 'Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband

The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

The husband thought for a moment: 'Well, this is all very romantic, but an

opportunity like this will never come again. I'm sorry my love, but my wish

is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.

The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish.

So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!...the husband became 92 Years old.

Moral of this story:

Men who are ungrateful should remember fairies are female.....
