Diet 'pill' targets dengue scourge

KUALA LUMPUR (June 6, 2012): A protein “pill” that starves mosquito larvae and could revolutionise the global dengue fight is being promoted by a member of the Negri Sembilan royalty.

Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Jaafar’s anti-dengue technology targets the offspring of mosquitoes in a bid to win the battle against the virus-spreading pest.

Dengue is a growing problem in Malaysia, where cases surged 22% to 6,141 from January to March this year, with 17 deaths. Just eight dengue deaths were reported for all of 2011. It is mainly transmitted to humans by the aedes aegypti mosquito.

A former diplomat, Naquiyuddin, 65, has been involved in a wide range of philanthropic and charitable pursuits, but dengue has been a particular passion.

Among Naquiyuddin’s diverse business activities is the biotech company he founded in 2007, EntoGenex, which has taken a pre-existing protein called the Trypsin Modulating Oostatic Factor, or TMOF, and developed it into what he calls a fatal “diet pill” for mosquitoes.

TMOF is mixed into yeast cells which are then inserted into rice husks, allowing them to float on water where they will be eaten by mosquito larvae, said Alan Brandt, EntoGenex’s research head. “Larvae love yeast,” he added.

Once consumed, it shuts down mosquito larvae digestive systems, starving them to death before they can grow and spread dengue.

“The ‘pill’ has a 100% success rate against all larvae species within 24 hours, and there is no way for resistance to build as it is not a toxic chemical but a protein which only affects mosquitoes,” Naquiyuddin said.

The firm has combined the TMOF with the equally tongue-twisting bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) bacteria, which eats holes in the guts of larvae but is non-toxic to people.

Most larvae die within an hour, and nearly all within 24 hours, according to EntoGenex, which has held several successful Malaysian field trials with universities and health authorities.

“What they have come up with is quite remarkable in combining Bti and TMOF, and the field trials have shown that ethere is success in using it,” said the Health Ministry’s Disease Control Division director Chong Chee Kheong.

Naquiyuddin’s “pill” is now registered for use in Malaysia, Pakistan and the Philippines, while Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon and Sri Lanka are either conducting field trials or seeking approvals to use it.

The “pill”, which costs about one-eighth the price of manufacturing conventional neurotoxins like DDT, will lower costs dramatically, said Naquiyuddin. – AFP

Sos Kicap

Guys,

Very disturbing news indeed. My father's Wira, reg. num. WHK 7328 (dark green wira sedan, 1.8 DOHC, quite old already) got stolen this morning, suspected during midnight. Vehicle parked right in front of our house. When we woke up this morning, we found the car missing.

Kindly PM me if you guys indeed sighted this car around. Police report has been made.

On the other hand, it would be nice if someone could shed a little bit information what can we expect after police report has been made, insurance wise and stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Online XML Editor

Good day people,

I designed quite number of websites for my clients, most of them are corporate clients. Im well equipped with designs skills, flash and have basic knowledge in actionscript, php, html and xml. recently i just finished learning loading xml files in flash. This enables me to develop a Flash site and extract the content directly from xml file (text, content including images, videos and swf). So this presents me with the opportunity for my clients to edit their website content only by editing the xml file.

but, all of my clients is a normal users. they don't know squad about coding. I use dreamweaver and sometimes notepad to edit xml files. So i need an online XML editor so my clients can log-in and edit the content, specifically the XML files in their own browser.

sample of XML coding as below:

CODE

<about>
<x>
<text>ADDRESS :
text starts heretext here.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Duis nisi. Duis faucibus magna in neque. Cras varius. Praesent nec nisi vitae augue gravida dignissim. Donec tempor metus id mauris. Aliquam ultricies semper neque. Mauris est erat, lobortis ut, bibendum in, interdum vel, erat.</text>
</x>

</about>

let say this is the XML file for my client's website; their 'about us' page. So i need a tools for my clients to log-in and edit it in WYSIWYG forms, then save. the the page automatically updated with the new text.

i dun need complicated database, just edit those particular pages.

im not so familiar with xml technologies/coding. this online tools must work in windows and linux webserver.

i hope all u sifu could help me and point to the right directions. give me your thoughts too. Might willing to pay to develop this tools.

thanks in advance
