Cabbies can turn robbers, Malay group warns amid Uber popularity

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — Taxi drivers may resort to crime if they lose their jobs in the face of stiff competition from ride sharing services like Uber and Grabcar, a Malay consumer group said today.

Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) president Datuk Nadzim Johan accused the Land and Public Transport Commission (Spad) of failing to provide an immediate solution to the fray between taxi operators and ride sharing services, claiming that the latter has resulted in income loss for taxi drivers by as much as 60 per cent.

“We are afraid that as more and more taxi drivers lose their job, they would be forced to resort to crime like robbery to survive.

“If the authorities do not act immediately, then the chances of that happening is very high,” Nadzim told a press conference here.

Nadzim noted that Spad had promised to resolve the issue after taxi drivers protested against the emergence of Uber and Grabcar, but nothing concrete has materialised after almost a year.

He said PPIM was not picking sides but wanted a “fair” resolution to the issue, but he also called the ride-sharing services an indicator of the potential negative impact the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement could have on Malaysian businesses.

“This is like a manifestation of the TPP. Imagine if anyone can just come in and compete. What if companies like Greyhound comes in and start competing, what would happen to local businesses?” he said, referring to the popular American bus service company.

Asked to clarify if this meant PPIM supported the call for Uber and Grabcar to be banned, Nadzim sidestepped by calling for regulatory measures without describing what this might entail.

“The government regulate… and come up with some solution to ensure the welfare of the taxi drivers are taken care of.

“I know its competition, and that in competition, the strong win. But we cannot let that be the rule and just neglect the weak,” he said.

Taxi services drew public backlash last week after some 100 drivers parked their cars on Jalan Bukit Bintang during office hours, forcing traffic to come to a standstill for at least two hours in a show of protest against ride-sharing services Uber and Grabcar.

While government leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said they acknowledged the problems facing cab drivers over the emergence of Uber and Grabcar, they added that taxi operators must embrace competition and use it as impetus to improve their services.

Najib also said that his government was not biased towards either group, and said the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is now looking into ways to solve the issue with a “just and fair” solution to expected to be announced soon.

Taxi drivers and firms have complained that Uber and GrabCar are competing unfairly as they do not face the same legal requirements as the former groups. They have also accused SPAD of failing to act against the two services that they insist are illegal.

The acrimony has resulted in sometimes violent altercations involving irate taxi drivers and those from the two ride-sharing services.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 ― The Higher Education Ministry has defended a local university that invited controversy by organising an anti-Christianisation seminar, saying the event held last year was to educate students on the threat of the Islamic State (IS) and Shiah teachings.

In a parliamentary reply to PKR’s Penampang MP Darell Leiking, minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh insisted that the forum was held in accordance with constitutional provisions and was meant to promote intellectual discourse on the topics.

“For Yang Berhormat’s information, the Higher Education Ministry does not agree with any provocative statements that contradict the Federal Constitution.

“The purpose of the seminar was to critically discuss the pros and cons of a critical issue, in line with the culture among academics and intellectuals at a higher education level,” he said in a parliamentary written reply today.

“Apart from that, the basis of the seminar, which was shared with the students of Universiti Teknologi Mara, was also to explain the threat of the Islamic State (IS), Shiah, terrorism and also to dissect the history of the crusades as well as the development of Islam,” Idris added.

In his question, Leiking had asked if the ministry is consulted on such forums, which took place twice late last year.

Idris said in response that universities are typically given full discretion in such matters.

“The higher education ministry has granted autonomy status to public universities so that they can become among the best institutions in the world,” he said.

The UiTM campus in Malacca entered the spotlight last December after it reportedly hosted a Muslim-only seminar claiming of a threat of proselytisation.

It was the second time the public university catering to Bumiputera community came under fire for holding an ostensibly anti-Christian programme on campus.

I have been too sad to speak up ever since Amos left for the past 3 months but I’m feeling more and more helpless now. I need help, but I think Amos definitely needs more help than me.

So many people have been asking me where Amos is, expecting me to know. Same as all of you, I would like to know where he is. I wonder who would be the lucky one. Is he on the run? Is he safe? Does he have enough money for food and lodging? How can he survive on his own without any help? Why has he been quiet online for so long? These are the questions that follow after 12th Dec 2015 which was the last day I saw him. He disappeared after receiving the police letter handed to him personally at our doorstep. Afterwards, he just kept quiet, and paced furiously around the house. I went to sleep at night and the next morning, he was gone.

A few days after Amos ran away, the police came over to my house and I thought that they were going to say that they had found Amos. However, they didn’t. Instead, they just asked me if I knew where he was, which I did not, and said that Amos needed to go for a rescheduled investigation on 22nd Dec 2015. Adding on to my anxiety, an inspector called me when Amos didn’t turn up for the health check-up he had to attend for National Service.
Obviously he did not attend, otherwise he would have been arrested on the spot for his previous offence.

We all know that Amos was arrested not because he offended religious groups, but for political reasons, making fun of Lee Kuan Yew when he had just died. After Amos was released from jail, he continued to make videos which became very popular, condemning the PAP government, and saying that Amos had offended Islam was just another excuse to arrest and silence him. Although he wasn’t charged and was only asked to show up for an investigation, he knew that if the investigation continued, he would definitely be charged and sentenced, and this time since it was a repeated offence, probably sent to 3 years of RTC, which is why he chose to run away from home.

I remember he wrote in his blog that he only has enough money to survive for another 3 months from the crowdfunding of his court case. That was in January, it has almost been 3 months since. The bank and PayPal accounts that Amos set up by himself for the transfer of funds from people, I never have access to.

Knowing Amos has never been good at handling money because seeing how fast he spends money from his bank account, I think he has no money anymore and I’m very fearful he hasn’t been able to eat. Maybe he ran out of money and needed to sell his laptop which is why he hasn’t posted anything for the past 2 months. I really don’t know and I am very confused and sad.

I think that Amos’ words are disrespectful and rude, but I don’t ever think that Amos should have been sentenced or put to jail because of it. Amos is a boy with very strong views and will pursue them, so I understand why he went on the run, but because of that I worry about him every day. People keep on telling me stories like why Amos has kept quiet for so long was because the government has secretly captured him, or that he has been drugged or killed. Thinking about the things that could be happening to Amos, I am unable to sleep well at night and I’m very worried about him.

If anyone knows where Amos is, please tell me, and if he insists on keeping it confidential, please help him to the best that you can. As a mother who has taken care of him for the past 17 years, I am really very worried. He doesn’t have any life skills, doesn’t know how to clean or sweep or cook. Either the grandparents’ maid or I have been doing things for him most of the time, and now that he suddenly has to live without my help, I’m really feeling very frightened.

Government cars may speed if rushing for official business, says Nur Jazlan

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Government vehicles may be exempted from speed limits when rushing between official functions, according to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

He said that there were “no hard and fast rules” on when such exemptions would apply, and that it was left to the discretion of the officials and the authorities involved.

“Government cars, if we have to rush for official business, we can inform the police,” he told reporters at the Dewan Rakyat lobby today.

“Government car on government business, we settle it internally, but with justification,” he added.

However, he stressed that even ministers are not exempt if caught speeding on a personal capacity, revealing that he had just paid a speeding fine of RM300.

“I'm not saying we can flout, what i am saying is that there are exception to the rules. Sometimes we have to hurry up to get to a function,” he said.

This comes after Rasah MP Teo Kok Seong said in Parliament today that ministers should set a good example on the road, instead of the government mulling an increase in traffic fines.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi had last week said that the government is planning to increase the maximum compounds of traffic summonses as these have not been reviewed since the Road Transport Act came into effect 29 years ago.

（泰國‧曼谷24日訊）15名企圖利用火車走私總值數百萬美元海洛因及甲基安非他命（methamphetamine）毒品的大馬人全部落網，並遭泰國警方逮捕！

法新社披露，泰國調查局局長提迪拉稱這些涉案者都是通過乘坐火車的方式，從泰國北部將毒品運到北海；他們不以轎車運輸是因考量到需經過多處檢查站，相對而言也比較冒險。

泰國鐵路警察已於昨天下午收到指示，要他們逮捕兩名涉嫌擁有23公斤（57磅）安非他命毒品的人。
