Help me to design my workstation

Currently perform my simulation on a c2d processor. For a 100 mb data file, it took me an hour 15 minutes to complete one simulation, and I need to run at least another 10-12 simulations in order to get the complete result for one particular scenario! Before this run my simulation work on a computer cluster at the uni @ UK, so not much of a problem since I can distribute the simulation jobs to 120 computers!

BUT, back to reality, to purchase a computer cluster system will be out of the equation since I have limited budget at the moment. So am thinking to purchase a workstation with a decent setup within RM8-9k budget. Am interested with Dell workstation series, so I have customized some of the setups from their website.

Here are some of the pressing questions I have in mind and looking for your help and suggestion before I can finalize with my decision

- Chassis: Dell Precision T3500 - is the size sufficient, or should I consider for bigger T5500 chassis?

- Processor: Intel® Xeon® W3565 3.20GHz, 8M cache, 4.8 GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT, 4C - Two questions here. First: Xeon or i7 better? Dell only allows to customize Xeon, i7 not available in the option list. Second: if budget permits, does it worth it to consider 6 cores?

- Video: 1 GB NVIDIA Quadro 2000 (2DP & 1DVI-I) (1DP-DVI & 1DVI-VGA adapter). Visualization is not really important for the simulator, so is this sufficient? Dell recommend at least Quadro 4000 series, which cost additional RM1.2k

- Monitor: 2 units of DellTM UltraSharp U2312HM 23" Monitor with LED. Not sure whether the 2 monitor setup effect the graphic card performance?

- Memory: 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 SDRAM Memory. This to allows future upgrade of 24GB

- Storage: 1TB SATA (7200RPM) Hard Disk Drive. Too big for my usage, but to allow auto backup, do I have to add one more physical h/disc?

Hi guys,

Will be going to kota baru for personal visit and was thinking is there any interesting stop along the east coast line? It's been a while since we last visit the east coast (2005), but we know there are few places worth a stop, such as:

A stuff crab restaurant n original kopitiam in kemaman
Sata, otak-otak n cendol stall in chukai, but probably forgot d exact location (anyone can guide me?)
Masjid terapung n masjid kristal in Kuala Tganu

Anyone can top up the list or recommend a place worth visiting?

Thanks guys!

Competitor for VAIO S Series

Guys,

Currently looking for an ultra portable laptop, with screen size preferably 13.3 inch, while the lightweight with long battery life is a must have feature. Was attracted with this model from VIAO: http://www.sony.com.my/product/vpcsb18gg

Notice that the battery life is 6 hours with weight less than 2kg (with battery). Processor speed is not mandatory- i will use the laptop for documents editing only. My budget is RM4-4.5k.

My question is, is the VAIO S series is the clear winner or is there any other model that I should consider?

Hi,

Just moved into a double storey intermediate house recently. Got to admit the heat at the 2nd floor is really bothering me. Was thinking of installing the turbo ventilators, seen thr promotion everywhere rm750++ for 2 units with free 6 points.

Has anyone done this to their house? Can share how much it helps to reduce the heat?

Spotlight for the kitchen cabinet

Guys,

My kitchen cabinet will be installed next thursday. After sort out all the appliances (hobs, hood, oven, sink, etc), now it comes down to the spotlight. Plan to install this at the bottom of the wall cabinet to light up the worktop area. My only problem with the one recommend by the kitchen shop is the size and power of the florescent bulb, which is too small to light up the worktop area. They have the halogen option, but it's gonna take 2 inch of the interior space cabinet., furthermore, the lifetime of the halogen is not as long as the florescent one.

Was thinking of some other alternative options. Can you guys share how you did yours? Is there some option which allow you to just fix and power up the light with battery instead of from the power supply?
BB 9300- Unresponsive trackpad

Guys,

My BB is still 2 months, before the trackpad gave some problem. Try few methods from LYN and results from google search, but still can't resolve. So I decided to send it back to Maxis for repair.

Maxis later passed the faulty unit to Brighstar and since then I didn't received any progress on the repair. Numerous phone calls have been replied with disappointing answers. It's been a month since I sent the phone for repair, and now I've second thought about it. Instead of waiting and receiving those hopeless reply, should I just get it repair in any cap ayam shop? How much is the cost to get the trackpad replaced?

Laptop Model: Toshiba M100 Satellite
OS: Win XP

Symptom:
1-After press the power button, LED from power, battery and hard disc is ON, but laptop can't load BIOS as the screen appear blank for more than 15 minutes. NOTE: hard disc button only appeared for few seconds only.

2- Detach the battery from laptop body and running on AC supply produced two different results:
(A)- Similar to 1, OR
(B)- Run as usual

This has been happening for several times.
Prompt monthly payment& your future tenant

Hi Guys,

My first house will be ready end of this month and I've spared some cash for basic renovation, electricity & kitchen works, so that it is ready to be rent, probably in next 2-3 months.

I have a concern here: how do I ensure my future tenant make prompt rental payment to my bank account? Other than the normal check your account& follow up call method? I am not interested to deal with tenant problem with regards to the rental payment, like insufficient fund, need cash to help family, etc.

Is there any better way of doing it? Does legal documentation can help you to deal with tenant who tend to escape from paying you, or you have to go through the hassle of going up& down to court just to solve this problem?

Also, between:

a- students
b- family, or
c- a group of singles who just started their career

which one would you prefer as your tenant?

Guys,

I have a simple and silly question to ask, as above.

Is there any complication if I install a 2G RAM, plus existing 1G RAM, that make a total 3G RAM on my notebook. As far as I know, the rule is always 2^xx, which in this example does not comply to the rule; hence the silly question. Tight budget wey this month!!! But i need some extra memory for my programming task.

So, any complication? Last heard (during Win98 era) will cause blue screen. I'm too old to catch up with stuff, can all you expert here give some f/back please?

thanks& cheers
