UOB Among Potential Bidders For Citi’s Consumer Banking Assets In Malaysia

UOB Bank has been named as one of the potential bidders that are looking to acquire Citigroup Inc’s (Citi) consumer banking assets in Malaysia. Other banks that are also in the pursuit include Standard Chartered Bank and Hong Leong Bank, said several industry sources.

To note, Citi’s consumer business encompasses credit cards, wealth management, and mortgages. Of these, the main draw for potential bidders lies in the credit card segment as Citi is said to be the third largest credit card player in the Malaysian market. It is behind only Maybank and CIMB Bank. Acquisition of the business will give the successful bidder an immediate boost in the credit card space, helping them to better compete with other rival banks.

“The Malaysia asset is one of the highly sought-after ones. Binding bids are due at end-September, so basically, it’s [this] week. Citi’s wealth proposition in Malaysia is compelling and the credit card business is very attractive… that’s what most of the banks are after,” said a source familiar with the matter. Citi’s credit card receivables currently stands at RM4.5 billion.

This bidding has come about as a result of Citi’s exit from retail banking in Malaysia, along with various other markets across Asia and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. Announced back in April 2021 as a part of an ongoing review of the bank’s strategy, a total of 13 markets were affected, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, and Australia. The chief executive officer of Citi, Jane Fraser had justified the move by saying that the bank lacked the scale that is needed to compete in these markets.

Sources have also noted that Citi would prefer to sell its Asian consumer assets to one bidder rather than as piecemeals. That said, this preference may be difficult to apply to some of the affected markets.

When we can stop wearing face mask?

Other countries already move on and many of them already stopped wearing it.

How long we should live in fear? Until now I'm feeling really uncomfortable wearing face mask for 8-9 hours since I'm facing/meet people every single day. The experience of talking to people NON stop wearing face mask is not a pleasant experience. It's really suffocating and there are times I feel like can't breathe properly.

The only time that I take off my mask when I'm inside office, inside car, home or in public area with 1-3 persons.

Majority of Klang Valley people already fully vaccinated. It's time to move on now

Germany now lets people save their driver’s license on the iPhone

If you live in Germany and don’t want to carry your driver’s license everywhere anymore, there’s an app for that. Starting today, you can store your license with the governmental app “ID Wallet.”

As spotted by the iPhone Ticker blog, German iPhone users can secure a digital representation of their identity card and their driver’s license on the iPhone now. After the “ID Wallet” was updated to version 1.6, it’s now officially supported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the Federal Printing Office.

To activate your driver’s license on the iPhone, you first need a valid identity card with an activated online function, as you can check it on the AusweisApp2 website. After scanning your ID, if everything is alright, you can save your driver’s license with the “ID Wallet” app.

With this app, it’s possible to have the digital driver’s license certificate issued on the website of the Federal Motor Transport Authority or directly from the Wallet.

In the future, the app can be used by affiliated fleet operators or car-sharing companies to check the driver’s license validation. Another option will be to use the “ID Wallet” app to easily check in to hotels, which is currently being tested.

With iOS 15, Apple announced the integration of the user’s ID with the Wallet app. Unfortunately, this is not what’s going on in Germany. In fact, the “ID Wallet” doesn’t integrate with Apple’s own Wallet, like many other governmental apps as well. Even though, it’s a great option to safely carry your license around with your iPhone.

Hi, I was wondering, do you think credit card is really important for Malaysian adult?

People keep saying that you must have at least 1 credit card for emergency purpose. I mean, if you have keep "enough" emergency fund in your saving account, then no point of using the credit card when you have enough fund in the first place. U can straightly pay the hospital bill, the car repair cost by using your debit card or even cash.

Other thing is to build your credit score. This is one the thing that most adult that I've met saying the same thing on this.

What do you think on this? Do you have credit card? Can you control yourself from overspending the card?

I actively surf reddit, and credit card is a big thing in US. If you don't have credit card, it's hard for you to rent a house since most the landlord is doing credit score checking

Florida requests 300 ventilators from federal government as COVID cases keep rising

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – As a result of the increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, the state of Florida requested 300 ventilators from the federal government, according to a Department of Health and Human Services planning document obtained by ABC News.

The request was made on Friday “to replace expended state stores,” the document said. The ventilators were expected to be delivered on Monday, though it was not said how they will be allocated.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday that he was not aware of such a request when asked about it.

“I have not heard about that, so I have to check to see if that’s true or not,” he said. “I would honestly doubt that that’s true, but I’ll look. We have a lot of stuff that we stockpiled over the last year and a half through the department of emergency management. I have not had any requests across my desk. I haven’t been notified of that.”

It comes as doctors are stressed and hospitals are tapped for resources, their beds continuing to fill with unvaccinated patients infected with the virus.
“The nurses, the physicians, they have passed burnout a long time ago,” said Dr. Joshua Lenchus, Broward Health’s chief medical officer. “This is sheer exhaustion”

Florida reported an average of over 19,000 new coronavirus cases per day last week, and more than 13,000 hospitalizations were reported across the state Sunday. - We are same like Florida. Every day 10k and above.

Despite the discrepancy in new cases, hospitals say they are being stressed. “We are close to 90% in terms of our capacity,” Lenchus said of Broward Health.

Broward Health has 336 COVID patients in their hospitals, with 61 new patients added from this past weekend — 96% are unvaccinated.

“99.5 percent of the death that we have because of COVID are in the unvaccinated population,” Lenchus said. “The people who stay here longer are unvaccinated, the people that are a little more severe are unvaccinated, so it really is a big difference. Even if you are vaccinated, and you make it into the hospital, the chances are much higher that you will make it out than if you were unvaccinated.”

There’s also been an explosion of pediatric patients, especially those 13 and older.

“Last year we didn’t see this tremendous explosion of kids,” Lenchus said. “I think part of this has to do with the Delta variant, the increase in infectivity of this, and the fact that those kids at least 12 and younger have not been vaccinated.” Jackson Health System in Miami-Dade is reporting 363 patients across their hospitals. Only 37 of them are vaccinated — of those, 24 are Miami Transplant Institute patients.

Across Jackson hospitals, they have five pediatric patients, with two in ICUs. At Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, there are 24 COVID patients ranging from babies to 18-year-olds. Seven of those patients are in the ICU.
