How often do you change computer?

Guys, how much and how often do you invest in computing power? Like changing computer periodically in 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?

I bought a laptop in Mar 2009. It works well all this while until recently when there are many Zoom meetings. The video conference is choppy at times and the motion of my cursor is moving slowly (not keeping up with my physical mouse motion). No such issues after shutting Zoom.

What is the problem? Is it worth upgrading the hardware or buying a new laptop?

Processor : P8600 Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4GHz)
RAM : 8Gb DDR2
Hardisk : 256Gb SSD
OS : Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Cost : RM5,700 (2009)

I compared with some of the laptop specs. in the market now, 2.4Ghz, 8Gb RAM seems mediocre but comparable. If the new computer has problem handling Zoom too, may not want to spend the money to buy.

My supervisor commented a lot on the details which result in excessive rework. That builds a lot of frustration, which sometimes i could not hold it back when talking to him.

Overseas Malaysian hard to re-settle in MY

A close friend of mine left the country right after STPM to pursue studies abroad.

10 years on, we still keep in touch with each other regularly. Throughout his conversation one could easily find that he remains largely patriotic and would return to tanah air whenever possible (from a land where rendang chicken has to be crispy). Regrettably, we concluded that it is very hard for him to re-settle in Malaysia without compromising his career and forgoing his current comfortable income.

He is an Engineer by training, a Chartered Engineer in fact. He shared that, Covid and the dwindling job opportunities aside, getting due recognition of his overseas experience and qualification alone is a tough and near impossible quest. He cited an example of him attempting to transfer his Chartered membership to the Board of Engineer, Malaysia. The process is long and arduous for returning Malaysian. Without going through those successfully, he would be at a disadvantage when hunting for job and negotiating salary in Malaysia. The pay cut is likely to be way above the threshold that he could possibly take.

I told him that there are people who want to leave the country, you pula want to come back. “Hujan emas di negeri orang, hujan batu di negeri sendiri, lebih baik di negeri sendiri” , he replied.

Yet Malaysians are everywhere, UK, US , Canada, Australia, New Zealand...

Any similar encounter?

Smartphone with removable battery is a breed of phone under serious threat. Removable battery is something in the past in Samsung's latest note and s series. Would you stock some of them before they really go extinct?

I'm using Galxy S5 and I bought the battery charging dock from samsung with an additional battery. With a little investment never had I experience the frustration of smartphone running out of juice and being forced to stand by the power point texting and youtubing.

As smartphones are getting more power hungry than ever, mobile phone would become alot less "mobile" without the removable battery feature.

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 [2014]— In 18 months, Malaysians may not need a visa to visit the US.

The Immigration Department is working to upgrade its systems to comply with US guidelines and the programme is expected to be completed by end of next year, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today.

Once complete, Malaysia will be the 38th country where its citizens would not need to apply for a tourist visa to the US for visits 90 days or less, the minister added.

“During President Obama’s visit recently, he estimated that the process would take a year-and-a-half but we are confident with the current system at the Immigration Department here, we will only need to upgrade a couple of things and we are confident we can implement it within a shorter amount of time,” Ahmad Zahid told reporters after the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here.

He said some of the areas to be improved in the Advanced Passengers Screening System (APSS), and to have a scanner for all documents.

During his speech earlier, he also said the visa-waiver will start off with “officials” first, then businessmen, and finally tourists.

Badminton: World number one Lee failed drug test

Badminton world number one Lee Chong Wei recently failed a drug test, Malaysian media reported late Tuesday, in a claim that sent shockwaves around the nation.

Malaysia's Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said earlier in the day that an athlete from the country had tested positive for a banned substance.

He declined to name the person because further tests were ongoing.

But The Star newspaper reported on its website that it was Lee and that he had failed a random test at the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen in late August.

The Badminton World Federation declined to comment, saying its anti-doping regulations required confidentiality, while the Badminton Association of Malaysia and other sports officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Lee, 31, is a national icon in the Southeast Asian nation and has consistently topped the badminton rankings, despite having failed to win a world or Olympic title.

Malaysians took to social media to express their disbelief, and support for Lee.

"There must be a reason. We have to lend him all our support Malaysian!" one user wrote on Twitter.
Khairy said in a statement that the country's anti-doping agency was informed in a letter from the international sports federation on October 1 of the failed doping test in an international tournament.

He added that the athlete had submitted another sample for further tests, the results of which were still pending. He gave no indication of when the final results would be known.

Khairy said he had asked top sports officials to undertake "a thorough investigation" of all the medical treatment that Lee had received.

If the results come back positive, it would mark Malaysia's second doping scandal in recent months.
Earlier this month, the head of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia resigned to take responsibility after Asian Games champion Tai Cheau Xuen tested positive for doping and was stripped of her gold medal.
In Copenhagen, Lee lost to China's Chen Long in the final.

Another tarmac accident involving Malaysia Airlines plane

A baggage-transport vehicle caused some damage to a Boeing 737-800 aircraft belonging to Malaysia Airlines at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today.

The vehicle was said to have hit the aircraft, causing a tear in the underside of the fuselage, The Star Online reported.
With the damage, the aircraft was decommissioned and sent for repairs while Malaysia Airlines replaced it with another Boeing 737-800 for the scheduled flight.

According to The Star Online, the cause of the accident is still being investigated but the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has been suspended with immediate effect.

This incident comes barely three weeks after another accident in which an airside vehicle (ground vehicles used by technical crew) had hit the underbelly of a Boeing 737-800 which was scheduled to fly to Yangon, Myanmar.

The B737-800 aircraft was scheduled to depart to Yangon (flight MH740) at 10.05am on Thursday, May 15, but due to the incident, passengers were transferred to a different aircraft which took off at 10.45am, MAS had later said in a statement.

The airline had also reprimanded the driver of that vehicle, which belonged to a vendor, but it is not known if there was any further action taken against the driver or the vendor. – June 3, 2014.
