Possibility of being scammed from selling car?

Has anyone know of or heard of the possibility of being scammed when selling your own car to someone unknown?

I'm trying to sell my car at the moment (old car not applicable for HP loan anymore) and recently received an enquiry.
He claimed to be a broker from Sabah (red flag to me) and is interested to buy my car to be sold to his customer or whatever. It seems like he wants to offer personal loan to whoever is buying from him.

So he's gonna arrange for viewing in the next few days (not sure what's gonna happen next) and he did mentioned that if his buyer asked about the price, he wants me to ask the buyer to refer back to him.

Has anyone heard of such modus operandi?

I guess if he's really a genuine buyer, we can wait until payment is fully cleared into my account before proceeding with any thumbprint procedure and keys handover.

Saw a few case on the Rolex watch scam where cheque were given and then bounced back - was hoping this might not be the case.

[SHARE] Retention Promos before Porting Out

Not sure if there any thread specifically on this but I do feel we should start sharing what is being offered when we try to port out from a certain telco. At least I know at TM unifi thread, they are sharing the latest SWU promo and more users are benefiting from it. It sucks that we have to go and request for it instead of it being offered to us automatically as loyal customers.

Telcos companies are cunning and as their customers, it doesn't pay to be loyal. More often than not, they are always coming up with new attractive, cheaper plans for new customers while ignoring their loyal customers. As a consumers, we should really shop around for the best plan for our own usage.

Anyway the purpose of this thread is to share whatever promos offered by your existing telco in order to "retain" your subscription. Here's mine - I'm with maxis postpaid for at least 10 years or more, however I felt the usage experience with them and coverage in my area has not improved despite multiple reports being made. In addition to that, they are also increasing the fee just to access the 5G network.

I took this opportunity to port out to another telco and here's where the retention specialist team come into play. Now they're offering RM49/month for two years to stay with them on the Maxis Postpaid 79 plan. I didn't take up the offer as I was ready to jump ship, moreover Maxis backend doesn't support 5G for pixel 7. For those who are still with them, I hope this info is useful and might even help reduce your monthly commitment.

Does your mechanic use torque wrench?

I have not seen any workshop/mechanic use torque wrench in Malaysia so far, what are your experience? Do you think it's neccessary?
If your mechanic uses a torque wrench, care to recommend?

I only noticed this practice of using torque wrench when watching car maintainence video in overseas

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[fb]https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=901376777143300[/fb]
[fb]https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1009511643125086[/fb]

Personally as a car owner, I feel it's important to have the installation torque properly according to spec. I also believe that uneven torque will result in improper installation of part and causes premature/uneven parts wear/damage. You can argue that these people are experienced enough to "feel" the correct torque but what happens when they use power tools?

Most common error I've seen is overtightening lug nuts during wheels installation due to the use of air impact wrench at workshop and no torque checking.
Didn't they teach the importance of torque specification in automotive school? Or these people are generally lazy/ rushing for time or couldn't be bothered? I suspect 95% of the workshop don't even invest in a properly calibrated torque wrench. This is a safety concern as too much torque will strip the thread of the bolts or bolts will be stretched beyond their limits, which can result in loose nuts or cause the bolt to crack and break. We are lucky that these ori wheels bolts are often over-engineered to withstand more torque than specified.

It has happened to me before where I was trying to remove my wheels for detailed washing at home - but due to overtightened lug nuts, I had to get metal pipe to extend the lug wrench for increased leverage and torque. Stepping and jumping on the lug wrench didn't work at all before that. Imagine if it was an punctured tire by the roadside, I would have been stuck there.

Due to this incident, I bought a torque wrench just to re-torque the lug nuts at home. I'll probably bring the torque wrench along for my next tire rotation/balancing work.

MySJ ID - email address or phone number?

For those who have gotten their vaccination appointment via the standard route, may I ask if your MySJ ID is phone number or email address?

I suspect if your MySJ ID is still email address, you might not be allocated an appointment. If not mistaken even the AZ registration earlier could be an issue if your MySJ ID is an email address.

Would like to hear your experience on this if you already have an appointment and what kind of ID are you using for MySJ.

Meanwhile most of my friends (<50 years old) who has been allocated an appointment have phone number as MySJ ID. Then got 1-2 using email address as MySJ ID still no news.

Michelin Pilot Sport EV

https://www.michelinmedia.com/pages/blog/de...ticle/c0/a1046/

QUOTE

The first Michelin tire engineered to meet the specific handling and range requirements of electric sports cars
Low road-noise for superior travelling comfort(1)
Result of the unique experience acquired by Michelin in Formula E racing
An eco-responsible, CO2-neutral tire at the point of sale(2)
Michelin has launched its first tire designed to address the specific demands made by electric sports cars. Launching April 1, the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport EV delivers:

Optimal grip on dry and wet roads(3) (4) – irrespective of the tire’s level of wear(5) – taking into account the higher weight and weight-distribution characteristics associated with electric sports cars.
Outstanding resistance to wear(6) in response to the high torque and acceleration forces of electric sports cars.
The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV’s low rolling resistance extends range by up to 37 miles(7).
20 percent less perceptible road noise thanks to MICHELIN AcousticTM technology which takes the form of a custom-developed polyurethane foam that reduces cabin noise(1).
The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV is the result of the unique experience Michelin has acquired in Formula E racing

A founding partner of Formula E, Michelin proposed a specific solution for the championship’s all-electric single-seaters that is similar in its concept to a road tire. The Michelin Formula E tire is capable of racing in any weather conditions, while its size – 18 inches – is consistent with current road-car norms.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV benefits directly from the progress Michelin has achieved over six seasons in Formula E and incorporates ElectricGrip CompoundTM technology which features a hard compound for the center of the tread to provide the grip required to handle high torque characteristics of electric sports cars. The sidewalls carry over the same pattern and velvet-finish markings of Michelin’s Formula E tire.

An eco-responsible, CO2-neutral tire at the point of sale(2)

In order to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the life of its tire and address the demands of electric sports car owners, Michelin has pledged to neutralize the CO2 emissions associated with the tire’s production and transport to its point of sale. This process includes the financing of projects aimed at offsetting and absorbing the residual CO2 emissions associated with tire production through the Livelihoods carbon fund until the day comes when it will be possible to eliminate them entirely.

Michelin is currently the only manufacturer that is active in the original-equipment and replacement electric sports car tire market. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV will be rolled during 2021 in a choice of 16 sizes (original equipment: 11 sizes / replacement market: 5 sizes) for 18- to 22-inch rims.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV is already available in China and will be available on vehicles released in Europe and North America from the third quarter 2021. By 2024, Michelin plans to increase its sales in this high-growth market by a factor of eight.

Do you think conventional cars will benefits from this specially designed for EV's tires?
It is supposed to be quieter (EV has no noise), higher wear resistance (high torque from EV), lower rolling resistance (for better EV mileage).
Cheap AGM vs Branded EFB batteries

Need some opinions here regarding start stop car batteries.
Generally the two types of car batteries needed for auto start stop to function is either EFB or AGM battery.

EFB - enhanced flooded battery
AGM - absorbent glass mat

I won't go into the details to explain the differences but it is already known that AGM in general is slightly more superior to EFB.

Now my question is, given the same budget, would you pay for cheap less popular brand AGM batteries (rocket, camel) or go for the branded EFB (varta, bosch)?

I've always received legit emails from Maybank indicating that funds has been transferred to my account via m2u@maybank.com.my
Today I received another email from this address asking me to review my account with a PDF attached to it (of course I didn't click on the link).

I suppose something has gone wrong somewhere, outlook failed to detect it as a spam/phishing email. It appeared in my focused inbox like usual.
You might want to warn those around you as those who are not tech-savvy might fall for it.
[PSA] Don't use Agoda "Book Now, Pay Later"

28/09/2018 UPDATE:
Thanks to [@mojo86] we found out that Agoda will definitely charge extra for all "Book Now, Pay Later" bookings regardless of forex movement. It is stated clearly in their "Terms of Use"

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(mojo86 @ Sep 27 2018, 01:27 AM)

For the people who says that it's not a scam, I was looking through Agoda's Terms Of Use, this is what they say about their exchange rate:

QUOTE

Pay Now bookings

When you select your Payment Currency on the booking page, we will update your total price to show the amount we will process to your payment account. We can do this because we know the exchange rate at that time. Agoda uses our Indicated Rate to convert currencies for Pay Now transactions.

Book Now Pay Later bookings

When you select your Payment Currency on the booking page, we will update your total price to show an estimate of the amount we will process on your payment date. We cannot show you the exact amount because the exchange rate will fluctuate between the booking date and the payment date. Agoda uses our Daily Adjusted Rate for Book Now Pay Later transactions.

Now this is the good part:

QUOTE

Indicated Rate – Bloomberg Generic Composite Rate mid-rate on the current day.
Daily Adjusted Rate – Bloomberg Generic Composite Rate on the day payment is processed plus 5%.

Am I misunderstanding something here? Or is Agoda saying they outright charge an extra 5% for pay later?

Screenshot of Terms of Use

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[attachmentid=10045066]
[attachmentid=10045069]

Not sure how many are aware and already using this "feature" of Agoda - Book Now, Pay Later.
I'm describing my recent experience which involves booking hotels in Japan and Thailand via Agoda.
Made my booking around Aug/Sept last year, picked the "Book Now, Pay Later" option, understood that it will be charged according to the latest exchange rate during date of payment.

In both cases, the payment charged via "Book Now, Pay Later" ended up 5-10% more expensive than the price quoted during time of booking even though MYR has been recovering recently. What I'm seeing is, Agoda is taking advantage of this to overcharge customers who book for hotels in different currency. Hence the problem lies in the currency exchange rate being applied to your payment. So far no issues with local/domestic hotels.

When I first encountered this, the time period between my travel date and booking date is about 2 weeks, but I was charged an additional 7%. How is it possible that the currency can fluctuate so much in 2 weeks. Made a complain to customer service and was refunded the difference immediately.
Then the same thing happened again, I was overcharged again. This time booking period was made few months earlier, and we also know that MYR has been recovering in recent weeks but I was charged an additional 6% - <s>complain in progress</s> If you read my later post, my first complain was ignored, which I followed up with a second long email. The team has decided to refund the price difference "as a gesture of goodwill".

All I'm saying is, if you're sure you're gonna book that hotel, you're better off paying it immediately at time of booking. Regardless of your currency strengthening or weakening, you'll always end up paying at least 5-10% more than what was quoted during time of booking.

If you end up in the same situation with me, don't hesitate to raise a complain to their CS. They can be helpful at times depending on who is handling your complains. Worse come to worst, if your booking has free cancellation, please go ahead and cancel it then re-book (assuming rooms are still available). Just don't fall for such currency exchange rate scams.

Apparently, I'm not alone in this case, see 8th and 9th comment in the thread - https://www.tripadvisor.com.my/ShowTopic-g2...ersekutuan.html

Additional info from other users - https://www.mybeautycravings.com/paying-mor...goda-pay-later/

To add on to my PSA: If you're using cashback for Agoda, somehow your hotel daily rates will be higher. Guess who's paying for your cashback?

Online purchases without invoice

Not sure if this is the correct place to post but I hope someone can shed some light regarding online purchases (thru e-commerce merchant such as Lazada/11street/Qoo10).

In such cases, which party is responsible for issuing the official tax invoice? Would it be the platform provider or the seller who uses the platform?

From my understanding, the merchant (ie, Lazada/11street/Qoo10) will be the one who is collecting the money, hence they should be responsible for issuing a proper invoice with the following: Seller/Shop Identity, address, date of purchase, description of items sold, quantity and price (with GST amount if applicable).

So far I have no problem with Lazada transaction as they always come with a simple invoice. The merchant that I'm having issue with now is Qoo10 (Giosys Sdn Bhd).

Qoo10 does provide what they call a "Purchase Description" upon successful confirmation of item delivery. And there is a clause saying that "This receipt cannot be used for the legal certification of your purchases without payment receipt such as credit card receipt." Judging from the look of it, that piece of documents is definitely not sufficient for tax filing purposes or even for warranty claims.

I've been bugging their customer service to provide me with a proper invoice but they kept telling me all they can provide is their version of receipt which is also known as "Purchase Description".

In such event, am I right to say that they are trying to avoid something? Eg, GST? If not, why can't they issue a proper invoice so it would easier for us consumer to do our bookkeeping or tax filing?

Is it even legal for them to do so?
Please advise on this matter.

Thanks in advance!
