KUALA LUMPUR: The government is exploring the installation of platform screen doors (PSDs) and other safety systems across LRT stations following a recent incident where a passenger fell onto the tracks at the Abdullah Hukum station, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Loke said discussions have been held with Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) on the matter.

“Prasarana has already proposed installing PSDs at platforms, but putting in such barriers is not a simple project, as it involves high costs.

“All stations would need to be modified, as older designs did not include PSDs. These are only available in newer rail systems such as the MRT, but not for older trains, like LRT and monorail,” he said.

Loke said this when met by reporters on Monday (April 13) at a road safety programme at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

He added that the ministry is also exploring the most practical ways to install barriers to enhance passenger safety.

“There are various technologies available, not only doors or barriers, but also systems such as sirens, infrared sensors and others that can alert passengers.

“This is something Prasarana is already working on, and we hope the project can be completed as soon as possible to prevent such incidents from recurring,” he said.

Earlier this month, a passenger fell onto the tracks at the Abdullah Hukum station, temporarily disrupting train services between the Universiti, Kerinchi and Abdullah Hukum stations.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Control Centre said the victim, a 39-year-old local woman, sustained injuries to her hands and face.

He said the directive aims to enhance safety measures across the LRT system, noting that newer Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations are already equipped with such doors, which act as a barrier between passengers and the train tracks.

“Passenger platform doors are already in place at MRT stations, serving as an additional layer of protection before the train arrives. However, there are a few LRT stations that have yet to be fitted with platform doors,” he said at a press conference today.

He was responding to the death of a Taiwanese man who is believed to have fallen onto the LRT tracks and been fatally struck by a train at the Pusat Bandar Puchong Station in Selangor yesterday.

Loke said he had received a report on the incident and that the matter had been handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation.

“We understand that it was indeed an accident, but we will leave it to the police to conduct a thorough investigation. CCTV footage will also be handed over to assist in the process,” he said.

When asked if the victim’s family had been notified, he said Prasarana would coordinate with Wisma Putra to follow up on the matter.

PETALING JAYA: As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, the government is stepping up efforts to upgrade its tracking infrastructure, aiming to deliver real-time data on EV charging bays nationwide.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry said a more comprehensive and integrated system, the e-Mobility Service Platform (eMSP), is currently being developed by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii).

Once fully operational, the eMSP will be integrated via an application programming interface with the existing Malaysia Electric Vehicle Charging Network (MEVnet) dashboard, enabling synchronised and up-to-date public data.

The MEVnet dashboard, which tracks the rollout of charging infrastructure, was jointly developed by the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC).

However, the ministry acknowledged that the public dashboard has yet to reflect the latest nationwide figures due to an ongoing transition in data management.

“The collection of data has been transferred from MGTC to MARii.

“MARii is currently developing the eMSP, a more comprehensive system designed to provide real-time updates and improve data consistency at the national level,” the ministry told The Star.

Managing Malaysia’s rapidly expanding EV infrastructure requires a coordinated, multi-agency approach.

Within this framework, the ministry, through PLANMalaysia, plays a supporting role focused on the strategic planning and implementation of charging bays, including the development of planning guidelines and approval procedures at the local authority level.

Meanwhile, the Energy Commission serves as the regulatory authority overseeing technical aspects such as utilisation rates and congestion at existing charging stations.

“Together, these coordinated efforts will help ensure that EV infrastructure continues to expand in line with growing adoption across Malaysia,” the ministry said.

Under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030, Malaysia aimed to deploy 10,000 public charging bays nationwide by the end of 2025.

TLDR: Rafizi thinks recent actions by PKR seems like they want to “exit” him out the party + vacate his seat via anti hopping law by “interpreting” his actions and words as him “leaving the party” so that they can vacate the Pandan seat instead of just sack him from the party. Especially with recently PMX showing up in Pandan making a statement
And he says instead of Ampang, in recent months Zafrul might have been reassigned to Pandan to target his seat.

This means perhaps Zafrul at Pandan and PMX will go to Ampang next election to find a safe seat? Don’t see him staying in Tambun risking it.

I think probably unlikely to happen till the extent of “interpreting his exit” and take away his seat at this point, it’s close enough to GE that they are just gonna throw Zafrul vs him next GE.

PETALING JAYA: The World Bank has raised its forecast for Malaysia’s 2026 economic growth to 4.4% from 4.1% despite rising tensions in the Middle East.
Its lead economist for Malaysia Apurva Sanghi said Malaysia enters this crisis period “mostly from a position of strength”.

He cited Malaysia’s resilient macroeconomic fundamentals, even as downside risks from geopolitical conflicts, trade tensions and structural shifts in global supply chains cloud the economic outlook.

Malaysia’s economy grew by 5.2% last year on strong domestic demand and favourable exports. Bank Negara Malaysia has projected the economy to grow at between 4% and 5% in 2026.

Apurva noted that the last two times Malaysia entered a crisis was at the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, and the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

He said on the eve of the pandemic, Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth was 4.4% in 2019.

“Malaysia’s economic growth exceeded expectations in 2025. It’s above 5% today, above the regional average,” he said during a briefing on Part 1 of the World Bank’s April 2026 Malaysia Economic Monitor.

He added that real income per capita was about RM43,000 in 2019 compared to about RM49,000 currently. In terms of the unemployment rate, he said it was 3.3% during the Covid-19 period while it is less than 3% today. However, inflation was 0.7% back then compared to 1.6% today.

Apurva noted the country’s major macroeconomic metrics are healthier today compared to the previous crisis periods.

He also said Malaysia is less exposed from a regional perspective. “Our assessment is that Malaysia is increasingly being seen as a safe haven for the region, reflecting strong fundamentals, growing fiscal discipline, and strong financial system performance,” he added.

He said Malaysia’s economic growth in 2026 would be driven mainly by private consumption.

“We expect domestic demand to be strong this year because of favourable labour market dynamics, with real median wages rising by 6% last year, as well as continued government support where required.

“So private consumption is definitely a key contributor to growth,” he added.

Apurva said investment momentum remains solid, with strong inflows for intermediate and capital goods, and continued foreign investment in key sectors such as information and communication technology, electrical and electronics, chemicals and data centres.

He noted that near-term downside risks are mainly external, stemming from protracted conflict in the Middle East, persistent policy uncertainty, escalating trade restrictions, a sharper slowdown in China, tighter global financial conditions, or a downturn in the technology cycle.

To strengthen resilience, he said Malaysia can deepen its trade openness by lowering barriers and accelerating targeted sectoral reforms.

“Together, these reforms would broaden Malaysia’s export base, reinforce supply chain integration, and better position the economy to withstand external shocks while capturing emerging trade opportunities,” he added.
