Marry young, it’s better than free mixing of sexes

PETALING JAYA: A Kelantan MP’s view on teen pregnancy and underage marriage reveals the vast difference between some conservative Muslims and rights advocates in addressing the problems.

Che Abdullah Mat Nawi, a PAS MP representing Tumpat, the northernmost constituency in Kelantan which borders Thailand, blames teen pregnancies and baby-dumping on the authorities’ failure to stop what he terms the free mixing of the opposite sexes.

“I see this a lot in Kuala Lumpur,” he told FMT.

“They go riding on motorbikes but I know they are not married. They go to islands and beaches. They have babies, and then throw them away.”

Abdullah disagrees with calls to raise the minimum legal age of marriage to 18, which have gained momentum following a series of cases of young girls married off to men twice or three times their age.

He also said getting married at a young age should not be seen as an obstacle for men and women to further their studies.

“How many people got married and still furthered their education? I got married when I was 23 years old. I did my masters in accounting when I was 32. I had four children already.

“So I don’t think marriage stops anyone from continuing their education,” said Abdullah, who is now the father of 12 children.

Yesterday, Muslim women’s empowerment group Sisters In Islam criticised the Kelantan government for not supporting Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call to raise the minimum legal age for marriage to 18 years.

“We are disappointed that Kelantan and Terengganu have opted to retain child marriage in the states, with Kelantan citing last November that the practice is regarded as a ‘necessity’ in the state,” it said.

Underage marriages have been widely debated in the media since June last year when a 41-year-old Kelantan man took an 11-year-old girl as his bride.

The following month, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the government would amend the laws to raise the marriageable age for girls from 16 to 18.

Mahathir also reportedly urged state governments during a meeting of menteris besar and chief ministers in October to raise the minimum age for marriage to 18 years for both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Abdullah said the main problem was the free mixing of genders.

He said unmarried couples caught for khalwat, or close proximity, should be married off as they would become more responsible after that.

“To me, we should not stop kids from getting married yet allow them to mix around. It is better for them to get married,” he said.

Abdullah also dismissed concerns that young parents would be unable to support their children.

“We believe we give birth and God gives sustenance. I have 12 children. I never worry about how I am going to feed the babies.

“Every time I have a baby, it is fed,” he said.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/.../02/19/1080405/

Just set rule that all restaurants must have smoking area and non-smoking area. Get the survey of percentage of smokers in Malaysia, then do the ratio according to that. Let's say it's 80:20, then put 80:20 ratio of non-smoking/smoking area.

Agree?

Former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today said he had to borrow money in order to pay for his expenses and bail money.

Najib made the revelation after being asked in an interview whether he felt under pressure after being slapped with 39 criminal charges with bail amounting to around RM6 million.

"Of course, it is something that I could not have imagined. I felt pressure and had to borrow money from certain quarters in order to foot my expenses and bail which was a large sum.

"I've also had to expend a lot of time," he said in an online interview aired by Nothing to Hide Media. The interview was conducted by Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who headed the propaganda department under the previous government.

sos pinjam wang

Do you put down/close the toilet bowl cover?

To some, it always seemed like the right thing to do to put down the seat and close the lid. Why? Because there is a lid. If it's there, why not use it? But some do not think this way. They either don't see the toilet lid or view it as a backrest.

Bacteria-filled Mist: When you flush the toilet, a bacterial mist is created. Studies have shown that the mist can travel several feet every time you flush, meaning any toothbrushes, towels, shower curtains, or surfaces in the vicinity are being blanketed in bacteria. You, too, are probably receiving a blow of gaseous bacteria to the face.

Sos

Tun M sudah merajuk

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — Malaysia will just become “a nation of consumers” if its people are unwilling to take a risk and set up a second national car, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

This comes amid mixed feedback regarding the prime minister’s proposal to come up with a second national car.

In a blog post, Dr Mahathir said that he has been informed that Malaysians have enough of Proton that was supposedly branded as a failed national car project.

He said he had been told that people had enough of Proton that was supposedly deemed a failure and are unwilling to see another national car brand being set up.

“Just forget about Vision 2020,” he wrote.

“Malaysia would become a nation of consumers, of paddy farmers, and of fishermen. No matter, this is what we want and what we will get,” he said.

Last month, Dr Mahathir said the Pakatan Harapan government was looking to introduce a new national car, as Proton, that was founded by him in 1983, had been bought by Chinese automotive manufacturer Geely last year.

Dr Mahathir also said that Malaysia might start the national car brand with another country — namely Thailand, South Korea or Japan.

“But we are already rejecting the idea of a second national car early on, and thereby, stop any suggestion of having the private sector produce cars. Surely, the government will not have a government-owned automotive industry,” Dr Mahathir argued today, defending his proposal.

He pointed out how post-war Japanese cars had been made fun of in the past due to its poor quality; so much so that it was compared to “Milo tins” back then.

But these cars eventually became giants in the automotive industry. Dr Mahathir said this was because Japan and South Korea had barred the import of foreign cars.

This, in effect resulted in the improvement of locally-produced cars which were eventually exported.

“But surely this will not happen with Malaysia. Our cars will continue to be made with Milo tins forever... No matter the type of car, its country of origin, whether it is of good quality of the ‘Milo tin’ variety; can all be brought into Malaysia. These are produced by giants and filled the Malaysian car market until Proton is buried.

“In the end, Proton is sold to foreigners. There is no more national car, no more automotive industry. Workers, engineers, managers have lost their jobs. Everything deteriorates,” Dr Mahathir said.

sos kecewa
