HDD SMART fail ... then pass?

I have a 1-year old plus WD Blue WD40EZRZ 4TB SATA drive, as a secondary drive (not as primary OS drive). Around 2 months ago, my desktop started throwing me SMART drive errors on this HDD, at which point it was starting to cause trouble by being unable to boot into Windows properly (until I managed to get back into safe mode). At first, virus and malware scans were negative and then using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic to check the drive, it also shows the SMART status FAIL and short test failure (can't remember whether I did an extended test). I think I remember the red-lined attribute was 'reallocated sector count'. So I disconnect the drive, and was waiting until I could get to buy a replacement drive and an external USB HDD enclosure (before I get to RMA the supposedly bad harddisk).

So yesterday I received my WD Red 4TB drive and a Hotway USB enclosure and installed both the new Red one and the 'problematic' Blue one, and transferred my files from Blue to Red. With the exception of only one file failure to copy (I didn't use a file copier with a checksum verifier [d'oh!]), everything was OK. Then I checked again with the Data Lifeguard tool, but now the Blue drive had its SMART status as PASS, and short test is ok (its still on its extended test).

What gives?

Update: I ended the extended test when it began to increase the remaining test time to over 12 hours while being stuck on a particular sector. Apparently Googling on USB-connected external HDDs and SMART, and looking back on the WD utility SMART report, it can't really check SMART values on them.

The Malaysian Armed Forces' cyber defence system which would emerge as the best such system in the Southeast Asian region will begin full operations in October this year.

Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said today the system, which had been developed two years ago, aimed to boost the country's preparedness in facing cyber threats.

"This (cyber threat) is an area which, in the context of the country's defence, must be taken seriously," he told reporters after participating in the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) Dialogue: The Future of National Defence, in Langkawi.

He said that before the system was developed fully, the Malaysian armed forces had already succeeded in thwarting several cyber attacks by certain parties, but he declined further comment.

"If I disclose more than this, I fear that those who are watching us will know of our (cyber defence system) capability," he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said his ministry was studying in detail another new pension scheme for about 176,000 military personnel who had now retired but had not received their pension.

He said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was expected to announce the new scheme at the launching of the Warriors' Day this year.

"(For the moment) many things have to be discussed with the stakeholders but we have already identified several steps forward (towards preparing the new scheme)," he said.

With regard to the dialogue, he said the participants concerned had given positive inputs and his ministry would collaborate with the Youth and Sports Ministry to finalise the aspirations of TN50 regarding the country's defence.

The dialogue, which was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, involved about 600 participants comprising university students, youth leaders and the National Service Training Programme alumni.

A few weeks ago in my twitter follow feed, an interesting article came up on IT 'big data' and cancer research, and the FAILURE of project management that ultimately led to cost overruns and job losses (wait, sound familiar?):

My interest was to know whether it was IBM's Watson oncology system that was in trouble (and it was not [the original Watson oncology project was with Sloan-Kettering]), and turns out this was another cancer research facility that contracted IBM. I thought nothing so much of the matter as another hallmark of failed project management which did not know what it wanted.

Until what happened today, what was to my eternal surprise I found out, after I tangentially discussed this with an IBM employee, who showed me this:

WHAT IS SURPRISING TO ME:

Even in cancer research, Jho Low's money can FUCUK IT UP. The IBM employee thought the Jho Low's money was cursed. I said Jho Low's money only followed CURSED PEOPLE.

Read through the Medscape article, and the Washington Post article [he went to MD Anderson {BECAUSE SOME ARAB GUY DONATED TO MD ANDERSON} to find out he suffered from an infection, not cancer for six months? Oi, Universiti Malaya Medical Center can find that out within less than a month!], and see how even highly-educated, medical science professionals, when given Jho Low's money, but riddled with the SAME SLEAZEBAG, SCUMNO values and standards, runs through money without a clue like 1MDB. [Initial MD Anderson Oncology Expert Advisor project creator was wife to the cancer research center president? Was is this? Rosmah and PMO?]

I am surprised Malaysians did not even realise that even philantropically, Jho Low is SCUMMED OUT by the same people he donated to, AND WE ARE WORSE FOR WEAR:

The past few days, after merrily using this setup with no problems for over a year since last format, I suddenly had black screen (not blue screen) while using graphics-intensive applications (movies, gaming) at seemingly random moments. At first, I thought my main hard drive (which was redlining from my HD Tune diagnostics made much earlier due to Windows HDD error warnings. It has run for in excess of 44,000 hours anyway ...) was about to kaput. So I bit the bullet and took out my main HDD, rearranged my other HDDs and went for a clean Windows 7 install once again.

Yesterday night, after the whole drivers updating and program installing, with no problems throughout [even watched some movies on the side], at one point while gaming, black screen occurred again. What was weird was when restarting to Windows normal, it had the "Starting Windows", then went blank, no start screen password or anything [could not AltCtrlDel as well, had to restart by reset button]. Loading up to Safe Mode was fine, so I got to thinking, the past few days my Radeon graphics application did note a new driver update (which was set for automatic updates), so I decided to DDU my drivers.
After that, I loaded up to Windows normal just fine.

Is the new drivers making lots of other Radeon users black screening? I'm going to try and stress test with FurMark now with no Radeon drivers to see if its hardware.

1. FurMark doesn't work without OpenGL drivers (provided by Radeon drivers). Since Radeon 16.4.1 didn't work, tried 16.3.2. Booted right into "Starting Windows" then blank. DDUing again.

2. Tried 15.12. DDUing again. I'm going to try rolling back drivers till I get back my Radeon enabled.

Tried playing Watch Dogs, and the CPU bottleneck just upped and hit me.

Was planning to get an i3 CPU when Star Citizen gets to release-build (not that ArenaCommander BS), but Watch Dogs just screwed me on this plan. It's obvious buying into Haswell or Broadwell is a major boost. But the question is, will there be a significant difference expected between 2014 Haswell and 2015 Broadwell? Should I wait for Broadwell?
