Japanese authorities are investigating officials of a city in the central region over claims they inflated population numbers in the most recent census.

Police raided the city hall of Toyama on Saturday after the central government filed a criminal complaint accusing officials of falsely adding more than 2,000 people.

The census is used to calculate funding from the central government. According to a city estimate, Toyama may have received 60 million yen ($378,000; £285,000) more than it should have.

Japan is grappling with declining population that is also rapidly aging.

Last year, Japan's total population decreased in all 47 prefectures but two, and the rate of decline is accelerating. About three in 10 residents are aged 65 or older.

According to Japan's internal affairs ministry, Toyama's actual population last year was 399,197, down from the allegedly inflated figure of 402,133 released in May.

Preliminary investigations suggest that officials involved had falsely added more than 2,000 residents by altering the sizes of households census takers had initially marked as empty.

THE nation’s Constitutional Court will issue a ruling on a case that seeks to annul Vice-President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s election win because of alleged gaps in his education record, a move that could see him lose office and further undermine President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.

Prabowo became the eighth president of South-East Asia’s largest economy after a successful but often controversial election campaign alongside Gibran, the 39-year-old eldest son of Prabowo’s predecessor, Joko Widodo.

Last month, plaintiffs led by a former Indonesian deputy law minister filed a petition to the court asking its nine-judge panel to annul Gibran’s vice-presidency, arguing that his overseas education credentials did not satisfy Indonesian eligibility requirements and were improperly accepted by election authorities.

Indonesian election law requires presidential and vice-presidential candidates to have completed senior high school or an equivalent level of education.

Plaintiffs argued that Gibran had failed to adequately prove he had met the criteria.

A small aircraft crashed and burst into flames Wednesday morning in a remote valley of northern Italy's Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, killing both people on board after the craft struck the cables of a service cableway near an Alpine dam.

What happened

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, near the Campliccioli dam in the municipality of Antrona Schieranco, in Italy's Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province.According to firefighters, the aircraft — a two-seat gyrocopter — struck the cables of a service cableway (funivia) used by Italian energy utility Enel to access the dam, then caught fire. The aircraft came down near the shores of Lake Campliccioli, on a grassy area beside the dam, after the collision.

Both occupants died in the crash: identified as Alessandro Muscinelli, a 62-year-old resident of Premeno who was piloting the aircraft, and his sister-in-law, Antonella Pagliarani, 63, a resident of the Milan area and partner of the pilot's brother, who was traveling as a passenger.

Already exposed, hard to dissuade
Prior to this, several Chinese media outlets have exposed the woman's actions as early as September 2025, Sin Chew Daily reported.

At the time, the bottled water she sold allegedly contained cloudy liquid and sediment.

Following this, local law enforcement officers were said to have repeatedly advised the woman against doing so.

However, it was difficult for them to take coercive measures due to her age and the way she would supposedly "lie down on the ground" each time they tried to dissuade her.

Officials noted that they would contact the village where she lived and try to prevent similar situations from taking place again.

Papua rebels shoot American pilot dead, torch plane to send ‘message’ to US

Rebels in Indonesia’s restive easternmost region of Papua on Thursday shot dead an American pilot and set a civilian plane on fire in what a spokesperson for a local separatist group described as a “message” to the US and Indonesian governments.

A low-level battle for independence from Indonesia has long raged in the resource-rich western half of Papua, where attacks by independence fighters have grown deadlier and more ‌frequent as they have procured better weaponry.

Sebby Sambom, a spokesman for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), an armed separatist group, said that their troops shot dead American pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin and set his plane on fire after it landed in the Yahukimo region of Highland Papua province.

United Airlines Boeing 777-300ER flight UA858, operating the Shanghai Pudong to San Francisco International route, was diverted to Tokyo Narita International Airport on June 24 after a middle-aged Chinese female passenger became involved in a dispute with a flight attendant during the flight.
Following the unscheduled landing, Japanese police boarded the aircraft, interacted with those involved, and escorted the passenger off the plane. Cabin footage circulating online showed uniformed Japanese authorities near the aircraft exit, with other passengers recording the removal on their phones.
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft eventually departed Narita at 17:53 JST — approximately four hours and forty minutes behind its scheduled departure — before continuing to San Francisco.
The incident prompted widespread frustration online over the significant operational disruption and costs caused to other passengers. Supporters of the diversion decision noted that crew safety is paramount and airlines are obligated to act when disputes reach a level requiring intervention. United Airlines has not issued a detailed public statement on the specific nature of the dispute.
