For more than six months, Afiq Zakwan Johari kept his bruises hidden and remained silent. He drove his boss, a fitness centre owner, to high-profile appointments and worked long hours as a personal assistant.
But behind closed doors, Afiq and his colleagues were allegedly assaulted, often brutally, by the man they worked for.

Now, the 27-year-old has had enough and has decided to speak out. "I've had enough," Afiq said during an exclusive interview with New Straits Times at Balai Berita yesterday. "What he did to me on June 16 was the last straw.

He hit me with a treadmill cable until my body turned black-and-blue.

The accused, a 37-year-old fitness instructor and gym owner, is a familiar face among the celebrity fitness circle — known for his muscular physique, booming social media presence and motivational mantras.

But Afiq and at least four other former staff members say that behind the facade of success, lies a man with anger issues.
"He would easily snap and when he snaps, he hits hard. He uses whatever is within reach, cables, his bare hands..." Afiq said, lifting his shirt sleeve to reveal faded scars on his upper arm.

Afiq, the youngest of four siblings from Kota Kemuning, joined the centre in September 2023.
At first, he said, the trainer treated him well, often surprising the workers with bonuses. "He called me his 'right-hand man'.
He was nice at first, generous even." But by the end of last year, things began to change.

Business, Afiq suspects, had slowed down and the man's frustration began to show. "He started lashing out over the smallest things," he said.
He said the abuse wasn't new. He claimed that he had been assaulted on several occasions in the office, at the trainer's home, and sometimes even in front of staff members. "I wasn't the only one.

Everyone working closely with him has been assaulted at some point. Only the cleaners were spared, probably because they don't interact with him much. He warned us that if we went to the police, he'd come after our families.
One of my colleagues tried to lodge a report last year, only to withdraw it later." Afiq, though, chose not to back down. After discussing with his family, he quit his job and went to the police.

He lodged two reports, once on June 17 at the Bukit Jelutong police station and a follow-up report on July 2. "I realised I wasn't just hurting myself by staying.

I was enabling him to continue." Following Afiq's report, four other former employees have come forward, filing similar complaints and sharing their own stories of physical and emotional abuse.

Afiq, meanwhile, had sought treatment for his injuries and was battling his emotional trauma. "I just want justice. Not just for me, but for all of us who suffered silently.
If any of us had stolen from him or done something terrible, maybe a harsh reaction could be justified. But this was nothing like that," he said.

Afiq's former employer, when contacted, shot down the allegations.
He described the claims as "lies" and said he had also lodged a report. "Let the police investigate," he said.

Liu is alleged to have first lied, then admitted, to also smuggling Fusarium graminearum into America—through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport—so that he too could conduct research the University of Michigan.

Both individuals have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements, and visa fraud.

This case is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply, which would have grave consequences... putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.

Fungus that can ‘eat you from the inside out’

Infection-causing fungi responsible for millions of deaths a year will spread significantly to new regions as the planet heats up, new research predicts — and the world is not prepared.

Fungi are absolutely everywhere. A vast kingdom of organisms, from mold to mushrooms, they grow in environments such as soil, compost and water. They play an important role in ecosystems but can have a devastating impact on human health: Fungal infections kill an estimated 2.5 million people a year, and a lack of data means that number could be far higher.

Yet we are still very far from understanding them, especially how these incredibly adaptable organisms will respond to a warming climate.

A team of scientists from Manchester University used computer simulations and forecasts to map the potential future spread of Aspergillus, a common group of fungi found all over the world that can cause aspergillosis, a life-threatening disease primarily affecting the lungs.

They found certain Aspergillus species will expand their range as the climate crisis intensifies, pushing into new parts of North America, Europe, China and Russia. The study, published this month, is currently being peer reviewed.
“Fungi are relatively under-researched compared to viruses and parasites, but these maps show that fungal pathogens will likely impact most areas of the world in the future,” said Norman van Rijn, one of the study’s authors and a climate change and infectious diseases researcher at the University of Manchester.

The field has seen new attention thanks to the popular HBO television drama “The Last of Us,” which follows people trying to survive in a world where an infectious mutant fungus has turned most of the population into violent monsters. (HBO and CNN share the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.)
It’s fiction, van Rijn said, but he hopes it will raise the profile of fungal infections that are killing millions in reality.

Aspergillus fungi grow like small filaments in soils all over the world. Like almost all fungi, they release huge numbers of tiny spores that spread through the air.
Humans inhale spores every day but most people won’t experience any health issues; their immune system clears them.

It’s a different story for those with lung conditions including asthma, cystic fibrosis and COPD, as well as people with compromised immune systems, such as cancer and organ transplant patients, and those who have had severe flu or Covid-19.

If the body’s immune system fails to clear the spores, the fungus “starts to grow and basically kind of eat you from the inside out, saying it really bluntly,” van Rijn said.

Aspergillosis has very high mortality rates at around 20% to 40%, he said. It’s also very difficult to diagnose, as doctors don’t always have it on their radar and patients often present with fevers and coughs, symptoms common to many illnesses.

Fungal pathogens are also becoming increasingly resistant to treatment, van Rijn added. There are only four classes of antifungal medicines available.
This all spells bad news as the climate shifts open up new areas for Aspergillus to colonize.

Aspergillus flavus, a species that tends to prefer hotter, tropical climates, could increase its spread by 16% if humans continue burning large amounts of fossil fuels, the study found. It’s predicted to push into parts of northern America, northern China and Russia.

This species can cause severe infections in humans and is resistant to many antifungal medications. It also infects a range of food crops, posing a potential threat to food security. The World Health Organization added Aspergillus flavus to its critical group of fungal pathogens in 2022 because of its public health impact and antifungal resistance risk.

Aspergillus fumigatus, which prefers more temperate climates, is predicted to spread northwards toward the North Pole as global temperatures rise. Its spread could increase by 77.5% by 2100, the study found, potentially exposing 9 million people in Europe.

Conversely, temperatures in some regions, including sub-Saharan Africa, could become so hot they are no longer hospitable to Aspergillus fungi. This could bring its own problems, as fungi play an important role in ecosystems, including healthy soils.

As well as expanding their growing range, a warming world could also be increasing fungi’s temperature tolerance, allowing them to better survive inside human bodies.

Extreme weather events such as drought, floods and heatwaves can affect fungi, too, helping to spread spores over long distances. There have been spikes in fungal disease following natural disasters, such as the outbreak after the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri.

The new Aspergillus study “rightfully shines a light on the threat of fungi that dwell in our natural environment and how under-prepared we are to cope with shifts in their prevalence,” said Elaine Bignell, co-director of the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Exeter, who was not involved in the research.

Many uncertainties remain, however, and there is still a huge amount of research to be done, she told CNN.

Despite the deadly nature of aspergillosis, there is a real lack of data on where the pathogen is in the environment and who gets infected, said Justin Remais, a professor of environmental health sciences at UC Berkeley, who was not involved in the research.

He is leading a study of more than 100 million patients across the United States, which identified more than 20,000 aspergillosis cases between 2013 and 2023. The number of cases is increasing about 5% each year, he said.
“Fungal pathogens are becoming increasingly common and resistant to treatment, and we are only beginning to understand how climate change is contributing,” he told CNN.

People are used to hearing about diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites, but much less so fungal diseases, said Bignell. “There is a desperate need to reverse this trend given the lethality,” she said.
“Any of us in the future might be affected.”

As of April 1, 2025, the COVID-19 virus has killed over 7 million people worldwide. As the world moves on from the virus, virologists in the US are warning of another potential pandemic.

With the H5N1 virus outbreak ongoing in the US, over 1,000 herds at dairy farms have been affected. At the time of writing (May 2), the virus has spread to all 50 US states, and at least 70 people have been affected by the virus, with one death reported.

What is H5N1, and does it affect humans?
H5N1 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus, also known as the avian flu or bird flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several subtypes of the virus exist, but H5N1 is considered among the most dangerous due to its ability to cause severe illness in both birds and humans.

The first death from H5N1 in the US was reported in January, involving an elderly man in Louisiana who had pre-existing health problems and had contact with sick birds. As of now, no cases of human-to-human transmission have been recorded.

However, health experts are concerned that viral mutations could alter the situation
They explained that when two types of viruses infect the same host, an exchange of genetic material can occur, creating new strains that have the potential to spread among humans.

In birds, H5N1 is transmitted through saliva, nasal discharge, and faeces. Domestic poultry—chickens and turkeys in particular—are especially vulnerable. Migratory birds can spread the virus across continents, making containment difficult.

Humans typically become infected through direct or close contact with infected birds or droppings, often in live bird markets, farms, or while handling raw poultry, reported Business Standard.

The concerns elevated when domestic pets, such as cats and dogs, contracted the virus through raw meat and milk. Once infected, these household pets can also spread the virus via respiratory droplets, saliva, and faeces.

CDC, however, assured the public that the current public health risk is low. The symptoms of H5N1 in humans to look out for (just in case) include high fever, malaise, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches.

Is Malaysia safe from the virus?
Despite no deaths from the virus reported in Malaysia, the most recent infection took place in 2017 in Kelantan, according to the Malaysian Journal of Veterinary Research. Before the case in Kelantan, Malaysia experienced three waves of the H5N1 outbreak – in 2004, 2006, and 2007.

Regardless, a health expert in Malaysia last year warned that Malaysia is still at high risk of the H5N1 infection, reported Utusan.

As of now, the CDC urges individuals to take necessary precautions, particularly for at-risk individuals who are close to infected animals, like dairy and poultry workers.

Doctors may prescribe Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or Zanamivir (Relenza) to slow virus replication. These work best when taken within 48 hours of symptom onset. There is no cure for the bird flu at the time being.

Kedah authorities urge calm after mysterious disea

An infectious disease cluster of unknown origin has been detected among 39 school students and staff in Yan, Kedah health authorities confirmed today.

The Star reported that health officials have been put on alert for patients showing symptoms such as cold, fever, cough, blisters, vomiting, diarrhoea, and red rashes, particularly those linked to a private training facility known as Palas Camp.
“All medical officers must immediately notify the Kedah Health Department if patients display any of the mentioned criteria,” Kedah health committee chairman Mansor Zakaria was quoted saying.

He said the Kedah Health Department was first notified of the cluster involving secondary school students and staff from Kuala Muda district on April 24.
Following the report, the Kuala Muda and Yan District Health offices launched an investigation and found that the affected individuals had attended a training camp in Yan.

Investigations revealed that out of 763 students and staff from the school, 39 individuals, or 5.11 per cent, displayed symptoms of fever, cough, and rashes.

Those affected, mainly 14-year-old students and some staff, are currently receiving treatment at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Mansor added that inspections and risk assessments have been conducted at the affected locations, and precautionary restrictions have been enforced.
“We request the public not to speculate, which could cause panic and disrupt the investigation,” he reportedly said.
“I urge everyone to take preventive measures and maintain cleanliness in their residential and recreational areas to prevent the spread of any infectious disease.”
