House roof got blown away

Hello all,

Need some help/advices from some of you experts.

Basically last Sunday, my house was wrecked by the storm in which my roof was blown away by the wind (crazy i know). Water started pouring into our house and destroyed the upper floor almost entirely, from furnitures, electrical appliances, all the way to the tiles. We are still trying to assess the damages for now but priority is to restore the roof ASAP. However, based on the initial assessment done by the insurance evaluator, we are probably able to only claim back a fraction of the cost to repair.

Thing is, we had the entire roof replaced just 2.5 years ago (its relatively new), and couldn't believe it when the entire roof literally got uprooted by the wind. Please see pictures for your reference.

So now, i have a few questions:

1) What other avenues can we file for damages for such an event? The consumer tribunal?

2) Can we sue to the previous contractor due to negligence/poor quality of work? How do we prove that?

It was heart-wrecking to see the house almost destroyed by the wind, especially for my aged parents who had to go through this. Any help and advicess here will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

[attachmentid=10223505]

[attachmentid=10223507]

[attachmentid=10223508]

[attachmentid=10223509]

Car got caught in a flood

Hi all,

My car was caught in a flood at a parking area a few days ago and the water level went up to as high as more than half the height of my tyre. While the engine appears undamaged (I just assumed that because I could drive just fine), my car's carpet (which is attached to the car body) is now soaked with water - causing a horrible stench during the next few days

My questions:

- is there a need to replace the entire carpet? Or is there any car wash that can offer internal carpets dry services?

-since my car appears to be working fine, is there a need to get someone to check my engine?

Thanks all, appreciate your replies.

Corporate Governance Question

Hi people, not sure this is the platform to ask but I'm doing a study on Corporate Governance, and I would like to seek your opinions (if any) with regards to the following:-

Authority to Allot and Issue Shares Pursuant to Section 132D of the Companies Act, 1965

You can view the act here

In the section 132D(1), it is mentioned that:

(1) Notwithstanding anything in a company's memorandum or articles, the directors shall not, without the prior approval of the company in general meeting, exercise any power of the company to issue shares.

Which means that the Directors have to acquire the approval of the shareholders in order to issue shares. This resolution is commonly found in Comany AGMs in which they will seek for shareholder's vote to pass this mandate which usually comes in the following form

Ordinary Resolution x: To authorize Directors to Allot and Issue Shares.

This mandate will allow the Directors to allot and issue shares in the Company from time to time and upon such terms and conditions and for such purposes as the Directors in their absolute discretion deem fit provided that the aggregate number of shares to be issued pursuant to this resolution does not exceed 10% of the issued share capital for the time being of the company.

My question would be, is there a rationale to vote AGAINST this resolution? If no, what would be your reason? Based on my understanding, Section 132D(1) does not transfer a company's power to issue shares from the directors to the members in general meeting. Rather, it imposes an obligation on the directors to obtain the approval of the company's shareholders in general meeting before the directors exercise their power to issue shares. Which means, voting AGAINST this resolution would be quite redundant as the Directors would still call for another EGM/AGM should they wish to allot/issue a PARTICULAR number of shares. Is it correct to say this? Can anyone verify the process of alloting and issuing shares in Malaysia?

Also, I am slightly confused with the following:-

"(6A) Notwithstanding subsection (1), the directors of a company shall not be required to obtain the prior approval of the company in a general meeting to issue shares where the said shares are to be issued as consideration or part consideration for the acquisition of shares or assets by the company and members of the company have been notified of the intention to issue the said shares at least fourteen days before the date of the issue of the said shares."

Does the subsection above imply that they no longer need approval to issue X amount of shares once they have acquired approval from the general shareholders to grant them the authority to issue/allot shares in the previous AGM? Again, would this render the resolution in an AGM pointless as the Directors could still issue shares anyway without the prior approval of shareholders anyway?

I think this may be a little technical and perhaps people with experience in Corporate Law or Corporate Finance may be able to advise me. But I would really appreciate if anyone could give me their opinions on this!

Benjamin.

The Road Down

A year ago, I was struggling between a choice, or rather, a desperation to pursue my tertiary education abroad so much so that I was almost willing to get myself heavily indebted with RM400k just to support my tertiary education, you can refer to my thread [URL=http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1433048&hl=] for opinions and comments. I realized I haven't really properly update people who have actually bothered to advise me in the past, and after reading a random comment in my blog, I think I should open a thread for this purpose, to encourage more people to pursue their dream, and to achieve what they have always wanted to accomplish.

This might seem to be just yet another story, but it is in my genuine sincerity to share it here and I have no intention to brag whatsoever. It used to seem impossible for a mediocre student like me to obtain an undergraduate overseas scholarship. I am just yet another student who does relatively well in exam, have some leadership positions, but not exactly many achievements to boast, and definitely not as competitive as other bright students are. But there is this strong desire in me to pursue my education abroad, because I want to see the world, exploring countries and continents to learn their history and culture when I'm young, live an entirely different experience that I know one can only achieve it by means of education abroad. This might have seemed like an easy & conventional path for people in a relatively well off family, but definitely not for me because I am liable to whatever financial cost to support my own tertiary education.

An overseas scholarship then became my only goal, the reason that pushed me hard during my pre university studies. I admit, there were times when I was drifted away by distractions, peer pressure and all sort of things, but I constantly reminded myself of my purpose here. I did my A level in TARC, giving up an offer from Taylors to do an accounting degree with a fully waived tuition for 4 years because I wasn't sure at that time, and I wanted a chance to realize my dream. TARC wasn't particularly a popular choice for people who wants to further their studies abroad, most people here do not share the same goal as I have. But it didn't matter to me, all I need is a free pre uni education and TARC seems to be quite a decent option.

After A level comes the last part of all, university applications & scholarships. I applied to countries like Singapore and Australia, but I knew my ultimate goal lies in UK. Same goes to scholarships, I threw in application for almost every corporate & government scholarships that provides an overseas scholarship even though there were only a handful of them, and obviously the competition will be immense. The waiting period was the part I dreaded the most. I woke up everyday in hope to get called for interview, to receive good news via email regarding my applications, praying & hoping that I will get selected eventually. It was this sparkling and glittering hope of mine that kept me motivated to pursue my dream, my ambition, that tells me that I can do this!

But life's a b****. Rejections started flooding in, even though I think I did relatively well in some interviews, all I got was; Sorry, unfortunately you did not make it to the next round. Was I not good enough? Was it because of the bloody ridiculous racial quota that each company set for? Is this all worth it, is there even a point for doing it? All my friends have either moved and begun their university degree, or have gotten some other offers somewhere. I was abandoned here, in the middle of no where trying to search for something that I don't think I stand a chance for. I was constantly bombarded with all these monologues, day & night, it was agonizing and heck, I think I even suffered anxiety and depression out of this. But I chose not to give up, and I gave in all my best, despite all the rejections I get from most of my applications.

Judging that my dream to UK is almost shattered, NUS seems to be a good back up choice, I have an offer from them, a financial aid scheme, and I'm already all set to go there until one fine day, a miracle happened. It was a blessing from God, a gift He chose to gave me because He knew I needed a hope; I got an email from University of Melbourne stating that I am a recipient for their International Undergraduate Scholarship. I received a full tuition fee waiver for all the duration of my course and there were no other conditions except to pass in my exams. I was really contented, but still, deep down inside, there is still a very strong desire of me to achieve the ultimatum of my dream, UK.

On my 3rd week in Melbourne, I received a phone call from my dad telling me that a firm from Malaysia called and broke the good news to me, I finally got the scholarship to UK, fully sponsoring me to University College London (UCL) for Bsc. Economics. It was the happiest day of my life. I remember I was having dinner that time, not entirely enjoying the meal due to the bleakly cold mid winter, but that particular phone call warmed me up almost immediately. My body was shaking vigorously, trembling not in fear, but in an overwhelming surge of joy and excitement. I was speechless, but deep inside, my heart was smiling with its widest and brightest diameter ever. It ought to be the happiest day of my life.

So here I am, studying in UCL, enjoying almost every second of my life. Coming here is like fulfilling a long lived dream that has finally came true, I have been travelling around UK & Europe during every break that I have, just came back from Rome & Venice 2 days ago (it was the best trip I had so far), and there is just so much you can learn by just visiting an entirely different country. But the main point of this little story of mine is to say that, being mediocre does not stop you from achieving your goal, your determination defines what you can achieve. And in all seriousness, if you really want to study abroad, I would say by all means come, I even met a singaporean girl who really loaned all her education expenses from banks & relatives, and she's doing relatively well here. Because she knew deep down inside, if there is a will, there is a way.

Hello, I presume you clicked this thread due to the thread title which might have caught your attention, and no it's not a prank, it's something which I MIGHT be going through, and I will really appreciate and positive and constructive comments from anyone of you.

To give you a brief insight of what is this all about, I have currently two options to go for:-

1) United Kingdom - University College London
2) Singapore - National University of Singapore

Fyi, I'm going to pursue economics in both university, where I have already secured unconditional offers from. I have applied to almost every available scholarship out there which provides overseas education funding/sponsorship, but so far the chances of securing one seems to be diminishing, and it has come to my realization that I'm in need of a back up plan, because I do not want to jeopardize the dream which I have planned and worked hard for so long already.

So, in order to finance my study in UK, I have calculated a rough estimation of 400k (at the current currency exchange rate) for my 3 years study there which ought to be pretty sufficient for my life in London, where the first 200k would come from a loan through Bank Rakyat - offering a max of 200k loan with a 7.45% interest rate p.a and a repayment of 15 years, and on my second year onwards I'll apply for JPA overseas loan which covers the 2 years remaining tuition fee which is interest free at the repayment of 20 years. The remainder of the figure might come from family/relative borrowings, which sums up to 400k.

Generally speaking, I'm more inclined towards the education in UK, and I'll base this on the following reasons;

1) UK's wage rate are much higher. If I were to study there, chances are rather high that I will work there, or rather I should say, I must work there. The weekly wage rate would be around 600GBP and above (so i've heard) which I believe is more than enough to cover the installment of the debts I owe, in terms of ringgit. I understand that if I were to come back and work here instead, I'll probably be buried alive by the debts I have incurred, so it would be a dumb idea if I chose to return.

2) Of course you may want to mention that competition are tough, especially when one is an international student who will be competing with the locals (UK citizens). But the uni I'll be attending - UCL in this case actually have a report which tabulated a 95% of their candidates were able to secured a job successfully after graduation (some even before graduation) I believe there is a certain amount of credentials from that report, judging that it's one of the highly ranked universities.

3) The experience - yes, something that I've been wanting for a change! I'm so accustomed to Malaysian's lifestyle and I really want a change be it in environment or the people around me, to learn things and explore things and the world on my own, where I believe it'll leave a great impact on me, and in everything! Plus the fact that I'm enrolled in the uni which is ranked the 4th of in the world (according to Times Higher Education) is what intrigued me to study there even more!

However, my concerns are as follows;

1) How difficult is it to secure an employment opportunity in the UK? My friend told me that the new prime minister is a conservative, and conservative do not favor migrants. Is it really that difficult for a foreigner to secure a job there, even if I graduated from their local college/uni? Especially when I'm in the field of economics?

2) Is it worth to spend 15-20 years to repay ur debts for only 3 years of education? But then again, since interest rates are fixed and if the UK currency appreciates or there's mild inflation by the time I'm working there, I repay less in real term (in terms of pounds to ringgit), so may I argue that it could be a positive investment in the long run?

3) The risk involved. Yes, economy changes very fast, and like I mentioned earlier the JPA oversea loan would only be available on my 2nd year onwards, and because they have a rather closed policy in working at things, I am afraid that such schemes might not be available by the time I reached my second year, though they are actually recommending people to opt for that schemes when a student are unable to secure an overseas scholarship.

So, what should I do? I'm still applying to any scholarships available out there, in fact I might be writing letter/emails soon to big corporation asking for sponsorship, though that could be quite unlikely, but I just want you guys to know that, I really worked hard to achieve my grades, and obtained admissions from some fairly reputable universities. In fact I'm even willing to take the risk even if it might seem to be a road with no return, call it stubborn or adamant, but it has become more than just a goal I wish to achieve, it's something that I want to achieve.

Note: I'm a self financed student, I don't think my parents financial circumstances would be able to support my tertiary education, be it locally or abroad, but all these would not deter me from laying down my goals.

Oh btw, for an education in singapore, if you guys are aware, it has lesser risk involved, and an easier plus better financial aid schemes which is not offered unlike UCL, since it's a need-blind university, but as you can see, I'm still more inclined towards the education in the UK. So... opinion and advices please

Low packet activity

Hi all, yesterday when I turned up my comp, I experienced a very sudden slow and lag in my connection. After investigating the modem and my ISP, I can confirm that none of those are faulty. Soon, I discovered that my internet packets activity are very unusual, the packets received are so much lower than the packets sent.

So I scanned my computer and tried to clear all the possible trojans and also checking my hijackthis log file. It does seem fine to me, then I tried to restore my system yesterday night, after trying multiple restoration (all of it which says restoration fail, and no changes made, I have no idea why) then the packets activity went back to normal. However, today the problem persisted, and no matter how many times I restored, nothing worked, so I'm really out of my mind.

Fyi, I'm using Linksys ADSL router, and i have tried the modem with another laptop and no such problem exist. So if anyone could enlighten me please do, because I attempted to google my problem but it didn't help much either. Thanks all. Here's a print screen of the connectivity and also my hijackthis log. Thanks

Note: I'm using a lan cable connected to my desktop.

» Click to show Spoiler -
Low Packet Activity

» Click to show Spoiler -
Degree in Economics

I have always wondered whether is it worth getting a Degree in Economics because many said that it's just a general degree, in which of course, the demand is obviously way lesser than that of the professional degrees like say, Accounting and Laws for instances.

Many people said you can enroll in many fields after getting a degree in Econs but generally, what are those specific jobs? Mind to list out some of them?

How bout investment and banking?
Can an economic degree holder be enrolled into such field?

What about Chartered Financial Analyst?
Is it seriously that tough to be certified as one? I heard that once you're a CFA, ur pay will rise tremendously, same goes to your workload and pressure as well.

I'm in a dilemma in choosing between accounting or economics. But generally I'm more interested towards Economics, the theory and everything but then again, accounting seems much a safer path.

They say being an accountant can get you into pretty much all the business fields.

Can anyone enlighten me? Because I'm on the verge of selecting the degree for my Uni application already, and I really don't want to make the choice that I will regret. Thanks.

Economic Related Prospects

Hello. I am about to finish my A levels soon, and it occurred to me that my best interest is in the field of Economics, among the other subjects which I have taken are Maths, Accounting, Business studies and of course, Economics. So, I have an intention to pick up economic related courses for me to pursue as degree in the future.

But, some of my friend advised me not to do so, because they told me that getting a degree in Economics is somewhat useless, because many would have this mindset of it being a very popular course, and it's a very general degree. I know that one can probably enroll in many fields after that but, what are the chances of you securing urself a good job?

So the question lies in here, is it wise to take up a general degree like Economics, or to pursue in some professional degrees, for instances, Accounting and Finance?

Please shed some light if anyone is in the field of economics.

p.s: Pls also don't tell me to choose what I like best etc etc, I would like to know more on the job scopes and opportunities wise. tq

A level Mathematics (pure)

Actually if I'm not desperate I wouldn't post up the questions, because my exam is tomorrow and I'm stuck here trying dam hard 2 figure it. Here goes :-

1) The rate, in cm³s ^-1 at which air is escaping from a balloon at time t seconds is proportional to the volume of air, V cm³, in the balloon at that instant. Initially, V = 1000.

a) Show that V = 1000 e^-kt, where k is a positive constant.

Given also that V = 500 when t = 6,

b) show that k =1/6 ln 2
c) calculate the value of V when t = 12.

For part a, since question says it's proportional to volume of air,

I formed an equation which is:-

dV/dt = kV

k = constant

so integrating it gives me

∫1/V dv = k ∫ dt
hence,
ln v = kt + c

so here i'm stuck, substituting it doesn't seem to help. desperate help needed tq.

Diagnosing a fried Computer?

Yesterday, while i was gaming, all of a sudden my pc went kapoot.

Cloud of smokes started emerging rapidly (from the back of the CPU, with a pungent smell, very much like the burning of plastic), and the CPU shut down by itself. I quickly removed the plug and let it cool down until today. (and I haven't try switching it on yet, to avoid further damages)

So, i was thinking to diagnose it on my own, to see which component went wrong. When I open it up, everything seemed fine, no sign of burning on the external components. Can i know how 2 check whether is my PSU working (do i really need to try it with other PC coz that will be quite a hassle XD or is there an alternative way for it?) or could it be other problems like mobo or graphic card failure =/

And i pray hard it's not my HDD if not I'll really find a wall and knock my head and just die off like that. rhetoric speech though.

Anyone willing to give me some advices?

p/s: i'm in quite a poverty stage right now, so I'll just hope to replace the faulty part only, although I know such things may cause a serial of other components damages as well =(
