Putin Calls The Internet A 'CIA Project'

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called the Internet a CIA project and made comments about Russia's biggest search engine Yandex, sending the company's shares plummeting.

The Kremlin has been anxious to exert greater control over the Internet, which opposition activists — barred from national television — have used to promote their ideas and organize protests.

Russia's parliament this week passed a law requiring social media websites to keep their servers in Russia and save all information about their users for at least half a year. Also, businessmen close to Putin now control Russia's leading social media network, VKontakte.

Speaking Thursday at a media forum in St. Petersburg, Putin said that the Internet originally was a "CIA project" and "is still developing as such."

To resist that influence, Putin said, Russia needs to "fight for its interests" online.

A Russian blogger complained to Putin that foreign websites and Yandex, the web search engine which is bigger in Russia than Google, are storing information on servers abroad, which could be undermining Russia's security.

In his reply, Putin mentioned unspecified pressure that was exerted on Yandex in its early years and chided the company for its registration in the Netherlands "not only for tax reasons but for other considerations, too."

I thought Penangnites always worship Singapore's urban planning strategy of planning ahead by at least 50 years?

What does this mean? More opportunities to create excuses to songlap more public funds and requesting to build the next 3rd link in future when congested again?

McDonald's doesn't think its employees should eat the food they serve.

The fast food giant has advised employees to avoid meals with burgers and fries and to eat healthier options like salad and sandwiches.

The advice was dispensed on the now-infamous McResource Line, the employees-only website that has told workers to sell their things and get second jobs to make ends meet.

The advice is given with graphics depicting the ‘unhealthy choice’ and the ‘healthier choice.’ McDonald’s own food is in the former column.

Despite featuring a vast array of deep fried delicacies, the Golden Arches reminds employees that ‘avoiding items that are deep fried are your best bet.’

The sensible advice also tells McWorkers to ‘limit the extras such as cheese, bacon and mayonnaise.’ Tasty add-ons that are staples of many menu items they serve on a daily basis.

A hamburger, fries and soda are warned against, because ‘eating a diet high in fat puts people at rick for becoming overweight.’

An embarrassing situation for McDonald's has now escalated as the fast food giant temporarily shut down their now-infamous staff-only website, McResource Line, on Wednesday after it was revealed the chain had been lecturing employees not to eat take out.

The same site hit headlines earlier this year for urging employees to sell their things and get second jobs to make ends meet.

A graphic on the homepage read: 'Fast foods are quick, reasonably priced, and readily available alternatives to home cooking. While convenient and economical for a busy lifestyle, fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt and may put people at risk for becoming overweight.'

'We are temporarily performing some maintenance in order to provide you with the best experience possible. Please excuse us while these upgrades are being made,' it said.

McDonald's confirmed the site had been taken down, CNN reported.

'A combination of factors has led us to re-evaluate and we've directed the vendor to take down the website,' they said in a statement.

'Between links to irrelevant or outdated information, along with outside groups taking elements out of context, this created unwarranted scrutiny and inappropriate commentary.

The ringgit is expected to trade in a lower range next week against the US dollar, following the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) announcement of its first reduction in quantitative easing, says Affin Investment Bank vice-president/head of retail research, Dr Nazri Khan.

The Fed is anticipated to further cut its stimulus programme from the current US$75 billion to US$65 billion a month, at a two-day policy meeting scheduled on January 28-29.

Nazri told Bernama that although the tapering will keep the greenback stronger and weaken the ringgit, it should be looked as a signal of a stronger US economy, which will eventually push local equities including Bursa Malaysia and the ringgit higher.

He also said the decline in the local note would be a temporary scenario and it will rebound after the Chinese New Year.

Each time holiday season approaches, year end and CNY the Ringgit will always drop against other currencies.

Did you know that BNM and bankers actually can do this intentionally always so that they can force the economy and people to spend more and give reason for price hikes?

The rational behind this is simple, when you need more value for your money at emergency times, the businessmen will take opportunity to raise price because he sees that you're desperate.
