Bukit Bintang 'no longer hub for pirated software'

PUTRAJAYA: Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, long known as the country's piracy hub for software, music, movies and games, is now a clean zone.

It took the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry's enforcement division two months and 46 raids on 82 premises at four shopping complexes in the zone to achieve this.

The raids were conducted at Sungei Wang Plaza, Low Yatt Plaza, Imbi Plaza and Berjaya Times Square, which are considered the hot spots and are frequented by foreign tourists looking for cheap software, CDs, VCDs and DVDs.

Division deputy director-general Ahmad Dahuri Mahmud said pirated products could no longer be found at these hot spots after the two-month Ops Helang, from Dec 5 last year to Feb 6.

"We have seized every pirated optical disc; you cannot find any more there," he said yesterday, adding that the division's objective of a Zero-Piracy-Zone had been achieved.

In the operation, 28 people were arrested, and RM2.3mil worth of optical discs and nine vehicles seized in 46 separate cases at the four shopping complexes.

Of the number, 38,668 units were software, while the others were VCDs (1,230 units), DVDs (530 units), CDs (11,646 units) and games (151,263 units).

Those arrested would be charged under the Copyright Act which carry fines of up to RM20,000 or five years jail or both for each software copied. Fines and jail terms would be doubled for second-time offenders, he added.

Ahmad Dahuri said software piracy through hard-disk loading could not be easily traced and the public's help was needed to detain errant suppliers.

The division's enforcement officers, who went undercover for a week at an IT centre in Sunway Pyramid, arrested a 28-year-old computer dealer red-handed on Thursday.

He said the suspect was copying the Microsoft XP operating system onto a hard disk from another hard disk. The department is now on the lookout for those copying the new Vista operating system.

"The Government had no choice but to hit hard at the source as software piracy at the retail end had become rampant," he said, adding that companies with pirated software often said their computers came preloaded with illegal software when buying from dealers.

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?f...0839&sec=nation
