Google Cloud announces new regions in Malaysia

Google Cloud has unveiled plans to launch new regions in Malaysia and Thailand, bolstering high-performance capabilities as the battle for cloud supremacy heats up in Southeast Asia.

Fresh off of an expansion to Mexico, Google today previewed the launch of new Google Cloud regions concentrated in Asia-Pacific (APAC), specifically Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand. When they come online, they’ll bring Google’s total number of cloud regions to 34 — short of Azure’s more than 60 but ahead of AWS’ 26.

“The new Google Cloud regions in Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand will help our customers continue to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems. We will work with our customers to ensure the cloud region fits their evolving needs.”

Cloud battle heats up in ASEAN

Plans to strengthen cloud capabilities in ASEAN comes 18 months after AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud and Telekom Malaysia were granted conditional approval to build and manage hyperscale data centres and cloud services in Malaysia, anchored around government plans to drive mass digital adoption.
Central to such efforts will be a select channel ecosystem of managed service providers (MSPs) comprising of Enfrasys Solutions, Prestariang Systems and Cloud Connect. Each will work closely with the cloud service providers (CSPs) to manage services delivered to agencies in the public sector, in line with government ambitions to strengthen the capabilities of local providers.
Within this context, Microsoft is also set to establish its first data centre region in Malaysia as part of its ‘Bersama Malaysia’ (Together with Malaysia) initiative.

The data centre region -- planned for the Greater Kuala Lumpur area -- will deliver Azure Availability Zones and provide access to the full Microsoft Cloud stack, including Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform in addition to Azure.
At this stage, AWS has only committed to launching Outposts in Malaysia and Thailand and currently provides a fully managed service through specialist channel partners.

Tech giants expand hyperscale data centers as data industry comes into its own

UPDATE: Received some questions on the credibility of this source, I have updated more sources as well as official responses from Google and Microsoft. This announcement was made publicly by PM during the launch of MyDigital last week.

The three big cloud service giants alongside Malaysia’s Telekom are expected to invest between US$2.96 – US$3.7 billion in Malaysia’s nascent data scene over the next five years, as part of the country’s digital initiative.

In a sign of how the data industry is localizing to suit organizations’ needs in differing geographic regions, the ‘big three’ public cloud vendors Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Google Cloud will soon build and manage hyperscale data centers and cloud services in the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia. The country’s Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin revealed that the three giants were granted the approval alongside local telco provider Telekom Malaysia.

The country’s premier revealed the government’s Digital Economy Blueprint or MyDigital initiative last Friday and it was announced that the cloud service providers (CSPs) are expected to invest between RM12 to RM15 billion (US$2.96 – US$3.70 billion) in the infrastructure in Malaysia in the next five years. The government is also targeting to migrate 80% of public data to hybrid cloud systems by the end of 2022, “as part of the measures to empower cloud computing services in the public sector through its ‘Cloud First’ strategy.”

Hi Sifus,

Need assistance for real issue here. I signed a contract (21-Months MAP Programme) with a Bank but the job is yet to start until October. Recently I received the opportunity to work abroad but unfortunately I have an employment bond. Let's say if I decide to take the opportunity to work abroad, will the Bank take any legal action against me if I can't commit to the contract even before the commencement? There is a clause in the contract stated I need to payback the training cost and remaining period if I was placed under termination or resignation but the job hasn't even started until October regardless. Should I just stick to the programme and give up the overseas opportunity? I'm so confused now and need help Sifuss..Thanks
