Sabri: Msia not failed to overcome Covid

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 5): Malaysia has yet to fail in managing the Covid-19 pandemic, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in addressing allegations of the government’s perceived failure regarding the matter by various parties.

The Senior Minister (Security) said although there were those who claimed the country had failed following a spike in cases, with daily infections reaching four-digit figures, the truth was actually the opposite.

"We have succeeded once but we have not failed yet. Based on research done by Lowy Institute, a think tank based in Sydney, Australia, regarding Malaysia’s effectiveness in managing Covid-19, Malaysia is ranked 16th out of 98 countries,” he said at the media conference on the Movement Control Order (MCO) development yesterday.

He said Malaysia was ranked higher than several famous countries in Asia, including Japan and South Korea, with a score of 71%.

He also denied that the government did not have a strategic plan to combat the pandemic, as claimed by some parties.

Ismail Sabri said the Health Ministry (MOH) and the National Security Council (MKN) had also outlined 15 strategic plans that he personally announced on Tuesday.

It includes five strategies under the Strategic Plan through the MOH, including breaking the transmission chain, reducing morbidity and deaths, strengthening diagnostics and surveillance, achieving herd immunity, increasing awareness of the culture of new norms.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said creative industry players would need to prepare a proposed standard operating procedure (SOP) to enable filming of advertisements, dramas and films to resume.

"We understand, those who work behind the scenes, the freelancers, are the most affected. There are suggestions to allow this sector to resume operations, we can consider it if the SOP is agreed by the Health Ministry,” he said.

Most T20 take i-sinar to buy stocks, gold

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): Almost half of the people in the T20 income group who were polled by the UCSI Poll Research Centre said they used — or would use — their i-Sinar withdrawal to invest in gold and stocks.

According to the survey, most of them were aged 40-55.

The survey involved 809 people with 47.7% from the T20 group, 31.1% from the M40 group and 35.3% from the B40 group responding that it would be for this purpose.

“Interestingly, investment was one of the main reasons for a i-Sinar withdrawal, particularly among the T20 group.

“Even in these challenging times with the Covid-19 pandemic, there are people who see an opportunity and want to seize it,” the research centre said in a statement today.

It added that for those aged 26-55 in the B40 and M40 income groups, repayment was the main reason for their Employees Provident Fund withdrawal.

The research centre also found that only 48.6% of respondents used the money for food and groceries.

SHAH ALAM (Feb 4): The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed deep concern over corruption and the spread of fake news with intent to slander, which are on the rise among politicians and civil servants.

The Istana Alam Shah, in a posting on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page today, reiterated Sultan Sharafuddin’s concerns over corruption and slander which are currently prevalent, as the enemies within the community and can destroy the country.

Sultan Sharafuddin also reminded the Malays in particular, that corruption and slander are forbidden and great sins in Islam.

“His Royal Highness is of the view that corruption and slander are the cause of division in the country’s political situation, further tarnishing the reputation of country’s administration at the international level.

“This is evidenced by the Malaysia’s significant drop in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) last year,” the statement said.

Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed shock over the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s disclosure that half of the corruption cases in the country involved civil servants.

Therefore, he called on the MACC to continue to work diligently to eliminate the immoral activities and hoped that the perpetrators could be tried immediately in court based on solid evidence, to set an example to the community.

Sultan Sharafuddin also advised every citizen to play a role in fighting corruption that can destroy the nation’s civilisation in the long run.

At the same time, he also praised the move of the Sinar Harian, a Malay daily, to come up with reports on various perspectives related to corruption in Malaysia through the "Rasuah Busters" segment.

He also stressed that the current situation is exacerbated by the spread of fake news to slander that is on increase on social media.

“His Royal Highness does not want the shortcomings and divisions in the political arena to spread to the point of dividing the people.

“He calls on the people of various races to stay united and wise in rejecting bad elements, especially corruption and slander for the well-being of the country and future generation,” added the statement.

Sultan Sharafuddin also believed that if the people stay united, devoted and worked hard, the country would definitely continue to progress.

KUALA LUMPUR, November 25 — Apart from promoting its pristine beaches and exotic islands, Indonesia is looking to become a hub for alternative treatment and attract more medical tourists.

From soothing an aching back to treating mental and even spiritual illnesses, the country’s traditional or unconventional healing method seems to have the answer to nearly every sort of ailment.

In a bid to boost the country’s medical tourism, Indonesia’s Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto announced recently that his country should capitalise on their “penis enlargement” massage.

Known locally as Mak Erot, the massage is believed to be an alternative treatment to enlarge a person’s manhood.

According to Vice Indonesia, Terawan has referred to Mak Erot as a national asset with high potential to attract medical tourists from abroad.

“We must popularise the idea of traditional medicine for tourism.

“We have an incredible herbal medicine industry that no one knows about outside Indonesia,” he said.

He also cited Tongkat Ali (a leaf that is said to boost athletic performance and muscle mass), Purwaceng (a Viagra-like substance), and Mak Erot as potential services to boost medical tourism.

“If we package it correctly, foreigners will be interested,” he said.

Terawan also specifically brought up Kerok, coin and ointment treatment, as a worthy attraction for medical tourism.

Known its varied benefits among the locals, Kerok is a method of treating a variety of ailments by rubbing a coin against the skin of the back with menthol ointment, which is believed to increase blood and oxygen circulation.

“Don’t underestimate kerok. If we had 100 rooms and it takes 20 minutes per person, imagine how much revenue that would generate.

“There are many other cultural gems that we have not exploited because we take them for granted, but to foreigners, it’s something intriguing,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 15): Malaysia's economic growth, as measured by gross domestic product, moderated to 4.4% in the third quarter of 2019 (3Q19) from a year earlier, after 2Q19's 4.9% on-year expansion.

In a statement today, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said this was primarily due to lower growth in the nation's key sectors and decline in mining and construction activities. Most domestic demand components and net exports also registered slower growth. On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy grew 0.9%, the central bank said.

For 3Q19, BNM said the country's headline inflation averaged higher, mainly reflecting the lapse in the impact from the goods and services tax (GST) zerorisation between June and August 2018. Core inflation, excluding the impact of consumption tax policy changes, was steady at 1.5%, it said.

"The Malaysian economy registered an average growth of 4.6% in the first three quarters of 2019. Overall, growth is expected to be within projections in 2019 and the pace sustained going into 2020. This is underpinned mainly by private sector activity, particularly household spending, which is supported by continued expansion in employment and income.

"Headline inflation in 2020 is projected to average higher than in 2019 but remain modest. This reflects the lapse in the impact of consumption tax policy changes, the lifting of the fuel price ceilings amid the relatively subdued outlook on global oil prices and policy measures in place to contain food prices. Underlying inflation is expected to remain stable, supported by continued expansion in economic activity and in the absence of strong demand pressures," BNM said.

TG PIAI POLLS | Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged the Election Commission to take action against DAP's Teresa Kok and Bersatu's Karmaine Sardini over alleged inducement of voters.

Taking to his Facebook page, Najib accused Kok of inducing voters with "sebotol sawit" (a bottle of palm oil) while campaigning.

This was in reference to Kok's decision to host an impromptu quiz at a ceramah last night, where sample bottles of palm oil were handed out for those with the correct answers to palm oil-related questions.

PETALING JAYA (Oct 23): The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) said the government's move to increase the minimum wage in major cities took the organisation by surprise as there was no consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

MEF president Tan Sri Azman Shah Haron also claimed that the increase has "very serious ramifications" on the cost of doing business in Malaysia, which will result in the compounding of the cost of living issue.

"The minimum wage was reviewed in Budget 2019 from RM1,050 to RM1,100 and now in Budget 2020, the government is looking to increase it to RM1,200 in big cities. This would not solve the problem of high cost of living but will instead compound the problem," Azman said at a press conference today.

He said the higher minimum wage will largely benefit foreign workers as "not many Malaysians are earning minimum wage". According to him, the increase will in fact burden Malaysians as this will result in higher prices of goods and services.

The move will have a limited effect on the economy, said Azman, as foreigners will be remitting their wages back to their home countries.

"It's now obvious that the finance minister prefers his own personal judgment in setting the minimum wages while choosing to ignore the views and recommendations of the experts in the National Wages Consultative Council once again," said Azman, adding that the minimum wage should be reviewed every two years as previously planned.

MEF proposed several alternatives that the government should consider in lieu of raising wages, such as providing RM250 via a "BR1M-like" subsidy payment to assist Malaysians to cope with the increase in the cost of living, which also ensures that the money will not leave the country.

Azman said this would also be in line with Pakatan Harapan's manifesto, which states that the government would share 50% of the costs involved in increasing the minimum wage to the targeted RM1,500, to reduce the burden on employers.

Besides that, MEF suggested the amendment of the definition of minimum wages from the current basic wages to gross wages, which includes overtime and other benefits received, so that it encourages productivity growth.

The federation also expressed its disapproval of the announcement of the extension of maternity leave from 60 to 90 days and the expansion of overtime eligibility from those earning less than RM2,000 to those earning less than RM4,000.

On the extension of maternity leave, MEF said the government should also share the responsibility, as practised in some neighbouring countries and developed economies.

"It is not fair to push the entire cost of maternity leave on employers, who would also have to bear additional cost of securing replacement for the employee on maternity leave," said Azman.

On the expansion of the scope of overtime eligibility, he said employees earning RM2,000 and below should still continue to be entitled to 1.5 times overtime rates but those earning between RM2,000 and RM4,000 should be paid at a rate of 1.0 times.

"The industry group is perplexed and taken aback by such a turn of events. These announcements have indeed very serious ramifications on the cost of doing business and industrial relations.

"With such high cost increases to doing business, it will be difficult for Malaysia to retain and attract investments," said Azman.

(Oct 21): Malaysia may become a target of sanctions as the export-reliant economy is caught in the crossfire of the U.S.-China trade war, according to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir said trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies could evolve into another Cold war, although he didn’t specify who could impose the curbs.

“Economically we are linked to both markets, and physically we are also caught in between for geographical reasons,” Mahathir said in Kuala Lumpur. “There are even suggestions that we ourselves would be a target for sanctions.”

He said Malaysia will prepare for the worst by cooperating with regional neighbors, but didn’t elaborate.

Neighboring Vietnam has already drawn the U.S. government’s ire, with President Donald Trump describing the Southeast Asian nation as “almost the single worst abuser of everybody” when asked if he wanted to impose tariffs on the nation.

HONG KONG, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Retail rents in Hong Kong, among the most expensive in the world, fell sharply in the third quarter, property consultancy CBRE said on Tuesday, following anti-government protests that have pushed shop sales to a record low.

High street retail rents fell by 10.5% in the July-Sept quarter compared to the previous quarter, CBRE said, the sharpest quarterly decline since the first quarter of 1998 at the time of the Asian financial crisis.

Overall high street rents are likely to decline by another 5-10% over the remainder of 2019, the consultancy said.

The Hong Kong protests began in May, in opposition to a bill allowing extradition to mainland China, but have since evolved into broader calls for democracy in the former British colony, with activists throwing petrol bombs, setting street fires and trashing metro stations.

China has accused the West of stirring up anti-Beijing sentiment in Hong Kong and reacted strongly to expressions of support for the protests.

The landlord of an 11,600 square foot (1,078 sq m), three-storey shop space in Causeway Bay, a prime shopping district, has slashed rent by more than 30 percent, according to realtor Midland IC&I.

The space will be leased for a monthly HK$480,000 ($61,196) to a claw crane arcade this month, down sharply from the HK$700,000 charged from the home appliance chain Fortress before that lease expired last October.

The protests have taken a heavy toll on tourism and consumer spending.

“There’s very few rental transactions; people are not making offers, they’re pessimistic about the outlook and want to observe more,” said Daniel Wong, CEO of Midland IC&I.

On the positive side, however, there have not been many lease terminations yet, he added.

A Midland survey published last month showed vacancy rates in Hong Kong’s four core shopping districts rose only slightly to 6.5% in the third quarter, up from 5.6% a year ago.

The realtor expected rents for core district street shops to decline 10%-15% in the second half, and the vacancy rate to rise to up to 8%-9% next year.

The government said last week at least 100 restaurants have closed in the past few months, and has repeatedly urged landlords and property developers to offer rent subsidies to retailers and food and beverage businesses.

MTR Corp, the subway operator which is about 75% owned by the government and itself owns some shopping centres, said it would refund rents and other charges on a pro rata basis to its tenants for the time it shut the stations or centres.

MTR together with major shopping mall developers Henderson Land and Hysan Development have offered some tenants temporary rental adjustments. Henderson and Hysan have also launched promotions to attract retail customers.

Lawrence Wan, senior director of CBRE Hong Kong retail advisory & transaction services, said some retailers have negotiated with landlords to restructure their lease. That would allow them to pay lower rent for two to three months, and then settle the difference when the business environment stabilises.

Some also looked for short-term leases of three to six months and put expansion plans on hold.

“We have got more clients asking about short-term leases. People want to see if they could get more business in the festive season,” Wan said, citing fashion outlets hoping to clear in-season stock during Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Eliud Kipchoge says he hopes to show there are "no limits" by becoming the first person to break the two-hour marathon barrier on Saturday.

The Kenyan, 34, is attempting the feat for the second time in the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, having missed out by 26 seconds in Monza in 2017.

He is the current world record holder, though this attempt will again not count as an official record as he will be assisted by rotating pacemakers.

"I'm running to make history," he said.

"I'm running to show that there are no limits, no human is limited."

Olympic champion Kipchoge, who won the London Marathon for the fourth time earlier this year, clocked two hours, 25 seconds in a similar attempt as part of Nike's Breaking 2 project at the Monza grand prix circuit in Italy.

This time he will run the 26.2 miles over 4.4 laps of a 5.97-mile course in Prater park in the Austrian capital, with the route consisting of two 2.67-mile stretches and two small loops at each end.

The location was selected because of the favourable climate, excellent air quality and almost completely flat terrain, with only 2.4 metres of incline over the entire route.

The attempt is being funded by petrochemicals company Ineos - owned by Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe - which also sponsors the cycling team of the same name.

The Ineos team assessed the weather conditions before selecting Saturday as the attempt date and will decide on a start time on Friday, with Kipchoge also hoping the course will be lined with spectators, unlike his previous attempt.

"The course is extremely good - I feel more prepared and I am confident," said Kipchoge.

"It's not about thinking, 'Am I going to do it?' - I have tried it the first time and the second time, I will do it."

Kipchoge will be assisted by 41 pacemakers, who will be helped to maintain a constant speed by a leading pace car that will beam lasers onto the road.

The pacemakers will rotate twice each lap and Kipchoge will be handed his drinks and energy gels from a bike every 3.1 miles, instead of picking them up from a table as in normal marathons.

These aids are not allowed under IAAF rules, which is why athletics' world governing body, the IAAF, did not recognise his first attempt as the official marathon world record and will not sanction this one either.

Kipchoge broke the official record by running 2:01:39 in the 2018 Berlin Marathon, while Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele fell two seconds short of that mark in this year's race.

"That run in Berlin and this run in Vienna are two different things," said Kipchoge.

"Berlin was running and breaking a world record - Vienna is running and making history, like the first man to go to the moon.

"I am trying to stay as calm as possible."
