Johor police foil RM1mil copper heist bid

JOHOR BARU: It was a short-lived joy for a group of robbers when police foiled their attempt to hijack a container carrying copper bars worth RM1mil.

Johor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said police had received a call from a factory owner in Pasir Gudang that a container laden with 12 tonnes of copper was hijacked after leaving the factory at 2.42pm on Feb 24.

“The owner informed us that the container was hijacked just a few minutes after leaving the factory for Negri Sembilan,’’ he said in a press conference at the Johor police contingent headquarters on Tuesday.

SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said police immediately deployed its men to several areas in Taman Mount Austin, about three kilometres away from the factory.

He said 18 suspects in the housing estate were arrested within half an hour, and police also discovered the container in a palm oil plantation there.

“The suspects, all males aged between 19 and 48, were operating as a syndicate and were also involved in 13 other cases targeting cargo containers,’’ he said.

SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said initial investigation showed that four of the suspects had previous criminal records and all suspects had been remanded until March 8.

In another case, he said a container carrying semi-finished furniture parts worth RM500,000 travelling from Muar to Negri Sembilan was hijacked by three men armed with parang.

“The incident took place at the Tangkak Tol Plaza on Feb 28 at about 5am after the suspects tied the driver and drove off the vehicle,’’ said SDCP Mohd Mokhtar.

He said police raided several premises in Seremban on March 1 around 2am and discovered the container, as well as arrested three male suspects aged between 36 and 38.

SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said initial investigations showed that two of them had previous criminal records and tested positive for drugs. All three suspects had been remanded until March 8.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.

Sicko rapes calf in Bidor barn

A MAN is believed to have performed unnatural and cruel sex on a three-week-old calf that died shortly after in Kampung Chang, Bidor.

The calf was found bleeding in the private parts in the barn by its owner on Saturday, reported Sinar Harian.

The owner claimed that the first incident happened three weeks ago when he saw the suspect loitering around the barn.

He even helped the suspect who claimed that his motorcycle had encountered mechanical problems.

The calf owner believed that the suspect was responsible for the death of his calf.

He lodged a police report on the same day and later reported the matter to the Veterinary Services Department for further investigation.

No stranger to toughing it out, Qantas boss Alan Joyce has declared he has the full support of the board after announcing the airline's worst result in nearly two decades.
However, Mr Joyce received a fresh blow mid-afternoon, when Prime Minister Tony Abbott played down the prospect of Qantas being handed a debt guarantee, despite the airline hours earlier announcing the $252 million half-year underlying loss and plans to cut 5000 jobs and close routes.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Abbott but signalled his government has cooled on giving a debt guarantee to the airline, despite foreshadowing such a move in recent weeks.
The Prime Minister said that while the government was determined Qantas could compete on a level playing field, ''what we do for one business, in fairness, we have to make available to all businesses''.
The Qantas result, revealed by chief executive Alan Joyce Thursday morning, was the airline's biggest first-half loss since the Keating government began cutting it free from government ownership in 1995. It comes amid a bitter fight with Virgin Australia in the domestic market and intense competition on international routes.

Former Fudan University student gets death sentenc

The former Fudan University student who killed his roommate by poisoning him and insisting it was 'an April Fool's joke' gone wrong was sentenced to death at Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court this week.
The postgraduate medical student Lin Senhaou, 28, was arrested in April when his roommate, Huang Yang, fell ill after drinking from a water dispenser in his dorm room and died several days later due to organ failure caused by poisoning.
Lin told police that he'd stolen the toxic chemical N-Nitrosodimethylamin from a lab at Zhongshan hospital and dropped around 50 milliliters into the water dispenser the two shared in their dorm room.
Prosecutors said that Lin should have known the amount was fatal, and believe that he intended to kill his roommate because he stayed silent as Huang's condition worsened.
Huang became sick after drinking the poisoned water on April 1, and died 15 days later. Lin didn't immediately confess his involvement until he was detained on April 12, when he told authorities that the poisoning was a spur-of-the-moment act after hearing Huang's talk about April Fool's Day.
"April Fool’s was coming, and Huang Yang said he planned to play tricks on others, so I thought, fine, I will give you one first,” Lin told the court. “I heard Huang drinking water from the dispenser. He took a mouthful of water and spat it out,” Lin said.
Although he heard his roommate vomiting, he didn't say anything to him out of fear of getting in trouble.
“I pretended to be asleep because I was afraid he would ask me about the water.”
Huang's father hoped Lin would receive the death sentence, as he previously told Shanghai Daily—"a life for a life".

A syndicate smuggling cigarettes and liquor along the coastline of Selangor in luxury cars has been busted.

A team from the Kuala Langat police headquarters yesterday recovered 9 MPVs and a Toyota Camry, worth about RM1.4mil, at an oil palm estate near the coastline of Jugra.

Of the 10 vehicles recovered, five had been reported stolen in Puchong, Putrajaya, Kajang and Salak Tinggi.

No arrests were made because the suspects escaped on foot upon seeing the police in the 6am incident.

Selangor police head Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said police had identified the suspects, adding that he was confident they would be arrested soon.

“When the police got to the location, the suspects escaped. No illegal items were found in the vehicles.

“The police are now in the midst of finding out who the mastermind is,” he said, adding that he had instructed police chiefs from other districts to also monitor smuggling activities, especially along the coastline.

Without disclosing any information on how long the syndicate had been in operation, SDCP Mohd Shukri said the group got their source of liquor and cigarettes from the coastline and sold them locally.

He said his men had been monitoring the syndicate for more than a month.

“Usually there are only one or two vehicles at the coastline but this is the first time that 10 cars came at one time,” he added.

From initial investigations, SDCP Mohd Shukri said the police found that the syndicate changed its locations frequently but stayed close to the coastline.

He added that the police were also investigating the source of the illegal goods.

Police crippled a major ATM card forgery syndicate believed to have been behind the theft of millions of ringgit.

Two syndicate members, Sri Lankans aged 28 and 38, were nabbed and 2,217 forged ATM cards were seized from an apartment in Taman Cempaka, Ampang, around 8pm on Monday.

Selangor Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Chong Mun Phing said the syndicate, despite being active for only two months, might have stolen millions of ringgit.

“This group forges ATM cards belonging to bank accounts from overseas and then makes the withdrawal here.

“We are still checking on the amount stolen but if they withdrew an average of RM1,000 per ATM card, that’s over RM2mil,” she said during a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday.

“They get the information to forge an ATM card from overseas and then create it here.

“They then send the cards to other members of the syndicate throughout the Klang Valley to make the withdrawals,” she said.

ACP Chong also said the cards were delivered to the syndicate members in special security boxes with combination locks.

She added that police also seized a large number of the security boxes during the arrests.

“They target victims from overseas because the ATM cards used there do not have a microchip and only use a magnetic strip which is easier to forge,” she said.

Initial checks showed that most of the bank accounts accessed by the syndicate were from Europe.

“We are still tracking the remaining members of the group and hope to detain them soon,” she said.]
