New! Google Voice Action & Google to Chrome

QUOTE

Just speak it: introducing Voice Actions for Android
Thursday, August 12, 2010 | 10:26 AM
(cross-posted with the Official Google Blog)

Our mobile phones have become modern-day Swiss Army knives. An Android phone is a handheld computer, a music player, a notepad, a GPS navigation unit and more, all rolled into one sleek device that fits in your pocket. Today’s phones do so many things for us that sometimes we don’t even think about how we do them.

Even though our phones do all these new things, the most natural way of interacting with a phone remains what it always has been: speaking. And to that end, we’re pleased to introduce Voice Actions for Android. Voice Actions are a series of spoken commands that let you control your phone using your voice. Call businesses and contacts, send texts and email, listen to music, browse the web, and complete common tasks, all just by speaking into your phone.

To use Voice Actions, tap the microphone button on the Google search box on your home screen, or press down for a few seconds on the physical search button on your phone to activate the “Speak Now” screen. Let Mike LeBeau, the lead engineer for Voice Actions, show you in this video.

Speak any of these commands to perform a Voice Action on your phone:
send text to [contact] [message]
listen to [artist/song/album]
call [business]
call [contact]
send email to [contact] [message]
go to [website]
note to self [note]
navigate to [location/business name]
directions to [location/business name]
map of [location]
And of course, you can still conduct a Google search using your voice.

[YOUTUBE]<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gGbYVvU0Z5s&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gGbYVvU0Z5s&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>[/YOUTUBE]

While we’re at it, we’re also releasing an updated version of the Google search widget for Android. When you type a local search query, like [italian restaurants] you’ll see suggested restaurants with addresses and ratings. Also, as you type queries, you can refine them further by tapping the pencil icon that appears to the right of search suggestions.

Both Voice Actions and the new Google search widget require Android 2.2 (Froyo), and will be pre-installed with the new Droid 2 phone from Motorola and Verizon. Voice Actions are currently available for U.S. English speakers.

If you have another phone with Android 2.2 (like the Nexus One, HTC Evo or the original Droid), you’ll need to download several app updates from Android Market to get all the latest goodness:
Voice Search (this app includes Voice Actions)
Google Search widget
music apps (e.g. Pandora, Last.fm, Rdio, mSpot)
To get started fast, scan the QR codes for these apps below.

We think Voice Actions help you get things done on your phone faster and easier. Give it a try, and let us know what you think!

Link to the application: http://www.google.com/mobile/voice-actions/index.html
Link to source: http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/08/j...ce-actions.html
Bad experience in a Singapore company based in PG

Well, let's start with my background. I am Electronics Eng. Student from local uni. I graduate with a second upper class degree. I start my job on this company as software engineer back in May 2009. Before I can officially join that company, I need to signed a bond contract. Without thinking or considering too much, I signed it because of the economy sucks in early of this years. Hard to get a job out there...

The bond contract basically state that:

1. You cant fire yourself but the company can fire you.
2. You cant leave the company no matter for what reason for 2 years.
3. You need to pay liquidated damage for remain months of your serving if you choose to leave in between this 2 years.

After work for 4 months in the company, many issues comes up...

1. Probation stated 3-6 months in the offer letter, mentioned that will convert depends on performance. In real case, my collegues got converted after 6months NO MATTER how good you perform.
2. As a software engineer, before join, promissed will arrange a laptop for me to use. On first day reporting, I got a Pentium 4 old computer with 14" CRT monitor. Hell laggy the computer...
3. As a software engineer, for all the time I being there, I didn't do anything so call an software engineer task. I did job like operator job. Do machine assembly, soldering job and etc.
4. There is no leave in first 6 months in this company. If you are sicked and get MC, you are considering taking unpaid leave. The 6days of leave for this first 6 month will only return to you after 1 year.
5. No OT claim for the so called "Executive" level, I dont mind if no OT claim but at least give me time off. No time off given as well. I tried to work continuously for weeks till late night. Ever tried to work till 6am on the next morning. Not working for software thinggy, but production thinggy...
6. Sucks project planning, I need to OT a lot and rush for production for those ppl. In the mean time still have to handle several project. They still assume you are superman, just throw one thing to you (design a RFID reader machine), I need to do all the things from schematic design, layout design, etching pcb, soldering job, testing the pcb, firmware coding, purchaser roll (buy parts) and etc. Expect me single man power to finish all the thing from scratch to product in 2 months while I am still handling other few projects.
7. Feel exploited and no appreaciation. After all your hard job to make the things work. You still get scolded and they still being picky this and that...

Thus, I decide to quit job for all the reasons above and throw my resignation letter. Today my last working day in that company, feel relief and also worry now...
This is due to I just got inform that a senior engineer tat signed bond and leave right after 2 months serving the company, received a lawyer letter demand him to pay the bond money.
I am worry that they issue the letter of demand to me as well, the amount involve will be around RM50k...

Any advices that you guys can give me to solve my situation? For example how to negotiate with the HR to let me go without chasing me for the bond money?

Intel Sues Nvidia !

Intel Wants Court to Ban Nvidia from Making Chipsets for Latest Processors.
Nvidia Claims that Cross-Licensing Agreement with Intel Cover All Future Processors
[02/18/2009 07:28 AM]
by Anton Shilov

Intel Corp. on Monday reportedly filed a case in Court of Chancery in the State of Delaware in a bid to ban Nvidia from making core-logic sets compatible with Intel’s Core i7 processors and its derivatives with integrated memory controller. In response, Nvidia Corp. said that it was sure that it has right to sell chipsets for Core i7 and other chips and that Intel wants to slowdown evolution of graphics chips with the court filing.

“We are confident that our license, as negotiated, applies,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of Nvidia.

The filing does not impact Nvidia chipsets that are currently being shipped, but Intel insists that the cross-licensing agreement the companies signed back in 2004 does not extend to Intel’s future generation central processing units with integrated memory controllers, such as code-named Nehalem family, which includes Intel Core i7 processors and their derivatives.

Intel has not commented on the issue by the time of publication.

Nvidia’s chief executive accused Intel of trying to slowdown the evolution of graphics processing units as well as Nvidia’s chipsets so to be able to control Intel-based PC platforms itself.

“At the heart of this issue is that the CPU has run its course and the soul of the PC is shifting quickly to the GPU. This is clearly an attempt to stifle innovation to protect a decaying CPU business,” claimed Mr. Huang.

Mr. Huang said that, given the “broad and growing adoption of Nvidia’s platform innovations”, it is not surprising that Intel is now initiating a dispute over a contract signed four years ago. According the chief of Nvidia, technologies like Nvidia Ion (integrated core-logic for Intel Atom and other processors), SLI (multi-GPU rendering), Hybrid power (ability to switch between integrated and discrete graphics core), and CUDA (programming language for GeForce GPUs) threaten Intel’s ability to control the PC platform.

The Sources:
Source 1
Additional~
