NETFLIX naik harga?

QUOTE

Netflix is making some big moves in 2019, and not all of them are going to be exciting for users of the streaming service. On Tuesday, what is certain to be the most frustrating of these changes went into effect. As of this week, Netflix is substantially increasing its prices for subscribers in the United States.

The standard plan, which previously cost $10.99 per month, has now been increased to $12.99 per month, a hike of 18 percent. Additionally, the Basic Plan offered by the streaming service, which allows users to watch in standard definition on just one screen at a time, is going from $7.99 to $8.99. The Premium Plan is going from $13.99 up to $15.99.

The new costs will go into effect immediately for new subscribers. For those that are already members of Netflix's services, the price change will occur at some point over the next three months. The price increases will soon expand to 40 markets in Latin America, where Netflix bills in U.S. currency. However, the price changes won't go into effect in Netflix's two biggest Latin American markets, Mexico and Brazil.

“We change pricing from time to time as we continue investing in great entertainment and improving the overall Netflix experience,” a Netflix spokeswoman said in a statement.

This is the first price change for Netflix since the end of 2017. At that time, the hike in price wasn't seen as too big of a deal in the eyes of users, as the company faced minimal cancellations. What remains to be seen is how subscribers will react to this new change. With streaming services popping up left and right, and major players like Disney+ set to arrive later this year, this could be the time that a significant number of users decide to jump off the bandwagon.

A price increase of this magnitude is difficult to take in, but it isn't necessarily surprising. As of September 30th, Netflix was reporting $8.34 billion in long-term debt, which was up from $6.50 billion in 2017. Netflix continues spending massive amounts of money on content, so the company needed to find a way to offset those costs. The price hike seems like the first of perhaps many steps towards solving that problem.

SOS

The Ministry will not treat this matter lightly if we were to further develop the industry.

“Although incidents with tourists like these happens everywhere in the world we will not stand by and do nothing. We appreciate the concern by netizens and their alertness on matters like this. We can all work together to ensure that our visitors to the State enjoy their holiday and at the same time respect our culture, beliefs and our people.”

“Once we identify the nationalities, strong action will be taken against them and the operator of the group who failed to brief and deter the foreigners on displaying correct mannerism when visiting a holy site.”

In wake of the incident, the Council of the City Mosque has put up a temporary ban on foreign visitors.

Close to a thousand foreign tourists visit the City Mosque every day which is one of the must-visit places in Kota Kinabalu.
ring, scissors stuck on genitals

KUCHING: A man was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) yesterday after he got a stainless steel ring and a pair of scissors stuck to his genitals, causing severe swelling.

The 45-year-old man’s plight came to light after he drove himself to Batu Lintang fire station to seek assistance in having the items removed from his private parts.

“The man was in unbearable pain. He tried to remove the ring by himself by cutting it with a pair of scissors.

“Unfortunately, the scissors got stuck to the ring at the base of his scrotum, and resulted in swelling to his penis,” said Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 1 chief Johari Dzulkifli.

He said the decision was made to rush the man to SGH as firemen were unable to locate the ring due to the swelling.

Upon arrival at the hospital, firemen worked together with medical personnel to free the man from his painful ordeal by removing the ring using an air grinder.

“The procedure lasted for about 10 minutes.

“The man was given painkillers to help him cope with the pain,” said Johari, adding that the man did not disclose how the ring ended on his penis.

sos

but why?

SIBU: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) Sarawak fully supports the call for the government to maintain the Public Service Pension Scheme for civil servants.

State Cuepacs (CNS) president Ahmad Malie said they are in sync with central Cuepacs as the pension scheme is more beneficial compared to the Employees Provident Fund (KWSP).

Many civil servants who had opted for EPF previously had reverted to pension scheme, he noted.

“In this regard, CNS is of the view that the pension scheme is more beneficial than KWSP.

“If the pension scheme is not beneficial, it is not possible that many of the public servants who had opted for KWSP (previously) had reverted to the pension scheme,” he said yesterday.

Central Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda recently urged the government to maintain the Public Service Pension Scheme for all civil servants.

He said among the main reasons why the pension scheme was still relevant was the fact that salaries of civil servants were relatively low compared to workers in the private sector and this had made it difficult for civil servants to have enough savings when they retire.

On this, Ahmad added: “Because of the low salary rate, KWSP scheme is not really relevant to be implemented (for civil servants), since it may create problems for civil servants in future.

“Therefore, in order to safeguard the welfare of civil servants, CNS strongly urges that this pension scheme be maintained,” he said.

SOS

if you keja gomen, which one do you prefer?

He suffered leg and elbow injuries in the incident.

Malaysia Base Jump Association president Captain ® A. Aziz Ahmad said there were no technical issues involved and the incident was purely due to unforeseen circumstances.

He said all the jumpers took the proper safety precautions before the jump and the incident was just “unfortunate”.

Gary has 420 jumps under his belt in his BASE jump career and this is his first time participating in the Sibu event.

well, shit happens.

sos

State against new federal tourism tax

SIBU: The state government is opposed to the imposition of the new federal tourism tax nationwide.

From Aug 1, hotel customers would be required to pay a nightly tax per room of RM20 for 5-star hotels; RM10 for 4-star hotels; RM5 for 1- to 3-star hotels; and RM2.50 for one, two, and three orchid hotels as well as unrated hotels.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah called the new tourism tax a glaring example of the federal government imposing tax laws in Sarawak without consultation.

“I see the imposition of the tourism tax in Sarawak as well as introducing the Tourism Tax Bill without informing the Sarawak state government as going against the spirit of MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963),” he said when contacted yesterday.

Abdul Karim explained that when Malaysia was formed in 1963, matters which come under the purview of the federal government were called Federal List matters, while those under the purview of the state were called State List matters.

“Unfortunately in 1963, tourism was among matters not discussed and it was not placed in either Federal or State List. When a matter is neither in the Federal or State List, the understanding is that it will be treated as being placed in the Residual List, where the matter is to be deliberated and discussed between the state and federal government,” he said.

He opined that the state government must be notified before the new tax is imposed in Sarawak.

“We must respect the wishes of our forefathers who penned the MA1963,” he stressed.

For Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sarawak Chapter president Ibrahim Nordin, the implementation of the new tax will result in hotels incurring additional costs such as reprogramming of software and credit card payment facilities, while customers would have to bear additional costs as well.

“There has been no official notification in writing. There was only an engagement session with MAH, Malaysian Association Hotel Owners (Maho) and Malaysian Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA),” he said.

Ibrahim said the new tourism tax is not the one time hotel levy announced by Minister of Tourism and Culture Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz for Peninsular Malaysia effective July 1.

“Hotels will be ‘asked’ to register. At the moment our stand would be not to register despite the enactment of the law,” he said.

Ibrahim said MAH Sarawak Chapter made the decision because hoteliers in the state want their queries over the collection mechanism and unfair playing field due to unlicensed operators to be addressed first.

The new tourism tax, which comes into effect after the passing of the Tourism Tax Bill in Parliament, will be in addition to the goods and services tax (GST) and service charge.

Accommodation premises with less than 10 rooms and homestays registered with the government will be exempted from collecting the tax.

SOS

NEED ADVICE: Buying New House.

Hello! i'm buying a new house using government loan and in an initial process which is paying booking fee and gathering all the necessary documents. this is my second house but the way the developer doing things is kinda different from what i experienced before.

1) Upon payment of booking fee (RM2k), they immediately produce S&P for me to sign even though loan not even approved yet. Is it the right thing for them to do? should i sign it?

2) regarding the booking fee, they said i cant refund it but the fee is theirs to keep and doesn't consider as deposit. like that can?

3) in the booking payment paperwork, it says that legal fee and stamp duty will be borne by them. but during explaining the content of that S&P, he said otherwise which is contradicting in the paperwork.

the project just started piling work.

so, need your kind help to make things clear.

thanks

Red Shirt Jamal banned from Sarawak

KUCHING: Umno Sungai Besar division chief Dato Jamal Yunos and three Peninsular Malaysia-based NGO presidents were barred from entering Sarawak yesterday, a clear evidence of the state government’s impartial ban on all who may jeopardise harmony in the state.

The three NGO chiefs were Abdul Rahim Ibrahim (president of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Melayu Kelang), Ariffin Abu Bakar (president of Eratkan Perhubungan Antara Negeri Cetuskan Organisasi- Epanco) and Mejar (B) Razali Zakaria (president of Pertubuhan Gerakan Martabat Pejuang Negara).

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem confirmed this in a press conference after a Sejiwa Senada gathering in Sibu yesterday.

Earlier this week, Adenan had described radical and extremist leaders from Peninsular Malaysia as “unsavoury elements” and said the state government would continue to bar such persons from entering the state, especially during election.

Jamal was given a notice of entry refusal by the Immigration Department which was signed by Kuching International Airport Immigration Office chief Kamarol Johari on behalf of the State Immigration director.

The notice dated Apr 14 was issued under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 66 of the same Act.

Jamal was served the notice upon landing in Kuching International Airport at 11.30am yesterday. He was asked to leave on the 2.35 pm flight to Kuala Lumpur the same day.

Nicknamed ‘Red Shirt Jamal’, the controversial Umno leader was the organiser of the Red Shirt Rally in Kuala Lumpur. He led

a group of supporters to demonstrate in front of Sogo in response to the rally planned by electoral reform group Bersih on Aug 29 to 30.

When contacted, Jamal said he was very disappointed and shocked for being refused entry by the Sarawak government.

“We did nothing wrong. Our purpose to come here is to help the government. As pro-government NGOs, we are here to help Sarawak government to campaign in the upcoming state election.

“Yet, we were not even allowed to enter. Once we touched down, we were stopped at the counter. We were kept waiting for an hour only to find that within that hour, they (the Immigration Office) were preparing all the documents and flight tickets to send us back,” said Jamal.

Accusing the state government of practising “double standard”, he said the decision was not fair as there were many leaders from opposition NGOs who were allowed to enter.

He said there were eight of them in their group and the four of them who were barred from entering were all presidents of various NGO bodies while the four who were allowed to enter were their members.

Meanwhile, state BN secretary general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi explained that Jamal was barred from entering Sarawak due to his involvement in racial and political movements recently in Kuala Lumpur.

“His involvement in racial and political movements recently in Kuala Lumpur may cause negative impacts in our peaceful harmonious state of Sarawak.”

Dr Rundi said the ban clearly showed that the state government did not discriminate against opposition leaders but all radical or extremist leaders from both divides who may be a threat to harmony which Sarawak has been enjoying.

“This clearly shows that the state government does not differentiate and only bar the opposition leaders as alleged by state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

“The state government also barred BN leaders with extreme views and actions. This is done for the good of our beloved state of Sarawak,” Dr Rundi pointed out.

sos
