'Body map' shows where men and women are

Scientists have created a body map, showing exactly where people do and don’t like to be touched.

More than 1,300 people responded to Oxford university and Finland’s Aalto university survey that asked where they were comfortable being touched and by whom.

The results, compiled into a “body map index” and published on Monday by PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in America), found men were far more comfortable with physical contact than women, with the single exception of contact with male friends.

The majority of women told researchers the only part of their body they were comfortable with male strangers touching were their hands.

In comparison, men claimed to be more at ease with a female stranger touching any part of their body, including their genitals, than a relative.

Finnish and British scientists asked participants from Britain, Finland, France, Italy and Russia to colour in outlines of the human body with where they were and were not comfortable being touched.

Overall, men were more uncomfortable than women at being touched by friends. Women were generally found to be happy with both male and female friends touching most parts of their body, while men were far more uncomfortable with similar-style physical interaction.

Aalto University researcher Julia Suvilehto suggested the results of the study (the largest of its kind ever attempted) showed touch was “an important means of maintaining social relationships.

“The greater the pleasure caused by touching a specific area of the body, the more selectively we allow others to touch it.”

“We interpret touch depending on the context of the relationship,” Oxford researcher Robin Dunbar also told The Daily Telegraph.

“We may perceive a touch in a particular place from a relative or friend as a comforting gesture, while the same touch from a partner might be more pleasurable, and from a stranger it would be entirely unwelcome.”

Jaga the hamsap one...

Come and challenge me or Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 ― Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz today issued a challenge to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to challenge either him or Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in a straight fight come the next general election, if the former prime minister is so adamant that the current administration is defunct.

The tourism and culture minister said Dr Mahathir can settle the score once and for all if he goes head-to-head with Najib in the Pekan parliamentary seat, instead of simply criticising the leader.

“I've been challenging him for the past one to two years. Don't talk so much, you know how to bring him (Najib) down,” Nazri told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby.

“Go fight him (Najib) in Pekan and see. The only way to bring Datuk Najib down is through Pekan,” he added.

If Dr Mahathir is not keen on contesting against Najib, Nazri said he is more than welcome to test his mettle in Padang Renggas.

“Fight him (Najib) in Pekan. If you don't want to fight him, fight me in Padang Renggas,” Nazri said, referring to his parliamentary constituency.

Nazri acknowledged that Umno has been facing a lot of criticism of late, but brushed it off as the “usual”.

“That's normal la, since when Umno does not get hantam (attacked). I also get hantam a lot but I still win,” he added.

Dr Mahathir has been one of the most vocal critics of Najib’s administration, especially over the latter’s handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fiasco.

Most recently, Dr Mahathir and a clutch of senior Barisan Nasional leaders condemned Putrajaya’s use of anti-terrorism laws to clamp down on former Penang Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang, who had attempted to get foreign authorities to launch probes on the state-owned firm.

SOS Biru Merah Kuning

Motorola confirms Marshmallow plans

After Google announced Marshmallow and the new Nexus family, HTC was the first 3rd party OEM to chime in on its plans for Android 6.0. Now it is Motorola’s turn. In an official blog post, Motorola detailed some of the best features found in Marshmallow and also gave a list of the devices confirmed to be getting the update.

Motorola is known for being pretty good when it comes to software updates, and so the devices omitted from the update list come as at least a little of a surprise. Most notably, the US carrier versions of the Moto X (2014) are being left out of the fun, as is the Motorola Moto E (both the original and the 2015 version). The original Moto X and Moto G are also being left out, though that’s a little less surprising given their age.

Now it is important to note that Motorola says “right now we have plans to upgrade the following Motorola devices. Things may change, so please refer to our software upgrade page for the latest, and specifics by country.” That means that they could still be negotiating with carriers and don’t want to get our hopes up, or it could mean they are really leaving US Moto X (2014) devices in the dark.

Here’s the full list of devices that are confirmed to be getting the Marshmallow update:

2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
2015 Moto X Play
2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia (2nd gen)
2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE (2nd gen)
DROID Turbo
2014 Moto MAXX
2014 Moto Turbo
Nexus 6

In addition to announcing its Marshmallow plans, the blog post also revealed that Motorola is retiring Moto Assist and will no longer be offering Migrate and Moto Connect as a preload on new devices.

SOS

Lucky me, my cheap Moto G get update compare to those expensive android phone

Chinese ‘Unicorn Woman’ Grows Gigantic Horn

An elderly Chinese villager has been dubbed “the unicorn woman” due to an abnormal growth on her head that looks like a large horn, it’s reported.

Liang Xiuzhen started growing something that resembled a “black mole” on her head around eight years ago, according to her son Wang Chaojun.

The 87-year-old, from Guiyan village in Ziyang City, Sichuan Province, was left stunned when two years ago it gave way to a finger-sized horn-like mass.

Xiuzhen accidentally “broke” that small horn in February - and her current, much larger, horn - which is currently 13cm long -began growing rapidly in its place.

“Now the horn hurts my mother and prevents her from sleeping. It also bleeds from time to time,” said Chaojun.

Doctors diagnosed the so-called unicorn horn as “cornu cutaneum” (cutaneous horn), a keratinous skin tumour that has the appearance of a horn.

Often small and benign, the growth can in some cases be much larger and malignant.

Chaojun said doctors believe they can remove the growth through surgery, but the family has its reservations due to Xiuzhen’s old age and are considering other options.

“My mother is old, and the horn is on her head which is a very sensitive area. I’m not confident [in the idea of] surgery. If something goes wrong [during surgery], it would be terrible,” he said.

Only last month another pensioner made headlines after it was revealed she had three bizarre toenail-like growths sprouting from her foot and had appealed for doctors to operate.

The unnamed woman from the town of Wadi Al Dawasir in central Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Province has reportedly been to several hospitals and clinics, with none of them able to explain what she is suffering from.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

SOS

Singapore teen in trouble again

Singapore prosecutors on Wednesday demanded that a rebellious teenager be sent to a reformatory after he re-posted a controversial video attacking the late independence leader Lee Kuan Yew.

Amos Yee, 16, currently on bail after being convicted of two criminal charges, had been expected to avoid confinement after agreeing to take the video off YouTube, where it has generated more than one million views.

Prosecutors initially recommended probation but hardened their position in a closed-door hearing Wednesday.

"The offender’s behaviour, especially in re-posting the offending material after his conviction on 12 May 2015, amplifies the need for rehabilitation and appropriate counselling," the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said in a statement after the hearing.

The AGC asked the judge to commit Yee, who has also refused to meet his probation officer, to a special reform programme which involves being held with other minors -- including some involved in gang activity.

Yee was found guilty of having hurt religious feelings in the video posted after Lee's death on March 23.

He likened Singapore's founding prime minister to Jesus in an expletive-laden monologue.

He was also found guilty of circulating obscene content -- a graphic cartoon involving Lee and late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

The AGC said it asked the judge to explore sentencing Yee to reformative training, which it described as "a rehabilitative sentencing option for young offenders who are aged between 16 and 18 years old and assessed to be unsuitable for probation".

"Reformative Training Centre is not jail," the AGC insisted, adding that young offenders sentenced to such a programme have no contact with adult prison inmates.

Offenders sentenced to undergo the programme are detained for a minimum 18 months, according to the AGC.

In the eight-minute video titled "Lee Kuan Yew is finally dead", Yee described the former leader as a "horrible person", saying he and Jesus "are both power-hungry and malicious but deceive others into thinking they are compassionate and kind".

Lee, who was in power for 31 years, died on March 23 aged 91 and was given a state funeral that saw an unprecedented public outpouring of grief.

SOS

(Reuters) - Golfers at a course in Florida on Wednesday were careful to putt around a large alligator, days after the beast was photographed lounging on the edge of the green in an image that went viral on Facebook.

A women's tournament went on as planned at the Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood, on Florida's west coast, as the gator, estimated at 12 to 13 feet (3.6 to 4 meters) long, reposed in full view of about 100 participants, said Mickie Zada, the club's general manager.

"If we stopped playing because of alligators, we'd never have golfers," Zada said.

Zada said she had spent much of Wednesday morning fielding calls from reporters asking whether the photo, taken by a golfer on Friday, was doctored to make the alligator appear larger.

"This gentleman is well into his 80s. He wouldn't even know Photoshop," Zada said.

While more than 200,000 people had viewed the Facebook photo as of Tuesday, according to the club, the alligator is far from the first - or even the biggest - to show up on the course.

A 15-footer (4.5-metre long one), nicknamed "Big George," hung around for years until his death, Zada said.

Despite nearly daily alligator sightings at the course, none have attacked a person in the club's 37 years, Zada said, owing in part to a strict policy against feeding the animals.

Dangerous confrontations between humans and alligators usually stem from people feeding them, Florida wildlife officials have said.

The new alligator has yet to be given a moniker, but that may soon change, Zada said.

"We might name him Viral," she said.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/florida-golfe...4526--golf.html

WOW, Alligator too want to play golf lor.. can pair it with Obama or Najib?

"It would have dwarfed anything else at the time."

About 480 million years ago, the seven foot-long Aegirocassis benmoulae swam about in the sea. The lobster-like sea creature used its flaps — swimming devices on its belly and back — and long segmented body to get around. And unlike many of its fellow its relatives, it ate plankton. This means that it had to swim with its appendages outstretched in front of its head, dragging a net-like "sieve" made of long downward-directed spines through the water.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

"It would have dwarfed anything else at the time, being twice as big as the next biggest animal — at the very least," says Peter Van Roy, an archeologist at Yale University and a co-author of a Nature study published today that contributes entirely new information about Aegirocassis benmoulae. "They were absolutely massive."

A lot of what you’ve just read wasn’t known until recently. When the Aegirocassis benmoulae's relatives — a group of marine animals called anomalocaridids — were first discovered, archeologists looked their spiny appendages and thought they represented the body of a shrimp. Some also believed that their toothed mouths were jellyfish, and their complete bodies were actually described as sea cucumbers.

Then, in 1985, a group of researchers figured it out. The bits and pieces that people were associating with various other species actually belonged to a single group of early marine animals called anomalocardids — large sea creatures that are ancestors to all arthropods, a category of animals composed of everything from lobsters and crabs to scorpions and ants. "Nevertheless, the affinities of anomalocaridids remained enigmatic: it would take almost another decade before they were finally recognized as arthropods," Van Roy says.

In 2011, things started coming together. Before that, archeologists thought that Aegirocassis benmoulae was a predatory animal, much like the major of anomalocaridids that had come before it. But the man who found the Aegirocassis benmoulae fossils — a local collector in Morocco by the name of Mohamed Ben Moula who doesn’t have archeological training — changed all that. "With a big smile, he walks over to me and says, ‘you know, I have something to show you,’" Van Roy says. Ben Moula showed him a beautifully preserved appendage with "very delicate filter-feeding morphology; it had all these fine spines," Van Roy says. "It was shocking."

To show their gratitude, Van Roy and his team named Aegirocassis benmoulae after the Morrocan collector.

In the time of the Aegirocassis benmoulae, during the the Ordovician period, plankton ecosystems were changing and many new species of plankton were popping up. This likely spurred the emergence of this large plankton-eating anomalocaridid. And going from predation to plankton-filtering is part of a larger evolutionary theme, Van Roy says. "Exactly the same thing happened much, much later in sharks and whales," he says. "They started out as predators, and because of a major plankton diversification suddenly you get extremely big filter-feeding animals, like whale sharks and blue whales." Researchers also think Crocodiles went through a similar period in which a large plankton-eating species of crocs emerged. "They reached massive sizes," he says. "And our animal is the oldest example of this."

The researchers also had no idea that Aegirocassis benmoulae — or any of other anomalocaridids, for that matter — had ventral flaps. No one thought they had fin-like swimming devices on their bellies, Van Roys says. "They were believed to lack limbs on the body." This might seem like a small oversight, but it’s actually quite significant from an evolutionary standpoint; it’s the missing link that explains how some crustaceans — like shrimp and lobsters — ended up with limbs that have two branches. These branches are involved in everything from gas exchange, to swimming, walking and grasping, and transferring sperm.

The fact that anomalocaridids had two sets of flaps — instead of just one set on their backs — supports the idea that the two-branched limbs we see in most crustaceans arose from the fusion of the dorsal and ventral flaps. "Because these structures are not yet joined together at their base in anomalocaridids, this confirms that anomalocaridids represent a very early stage in the evolution of arthropods," Van Roy says. It's one of the most exciting discoveries he has ever made.

"When I discovered these flaps, the implications for the evolution of limbs and for anomalocaridids… I thought ‘jeez, is this really true?,'" Van Roy says. "And so for weeks, I went back to the fossils every day just to make sure that ‘yes the flaps are there, I’m not being crazy, I’m not seeing things.’"

He wasn’t crazy or seeing things. Eventually Van Roy and his team of researchers looked at other, older anomalocaridid fossils and discovered that the flaps had simply been overlooked. "When we went back [to the older fossils], we saw that they actually also had this second set of flaps."

It’s important to note that although Aegirocassis benmoulae was the largest animal on Earth at the time of existence, it isn’t the largest arthropod to ever exist. That title goes to the sea scorpion. It was eight feet long.

Sea Scorpion. [Credit: Ryan Somma/ FLickr]

Now that the researchers and have published their findings, Van Roy says that he plans to move on to other types of arthropods. But he doesn’t think he will leave anomalocaridids behind; there is far too much knowledge to gain from them. "There’s still new material to study, and much more to learn from the specimens that have already been studied — this study isn’t finished by a long stretch."

http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/11/8191763/...assis-benmoulae

Ankh Cross on Mars?!

Curiosity Rover Photo Reveals Ancient Egyptian Ankh Cross, Evidence of Ancient Mars Culture

The planet Mars continues to prove a treasure trove of ancient civilization artifacts for Mars anomaly researchers, who have gone far beyond NASA scientists’ quests for lowly microbial life on the planet to unearthing, in truckloads, evidence of ancient cultures they solemnly aver once flourished on the now desolate planet.

The latest find by Mars anomaly researchers comes from the YouTube researchers “Mars Moon Space Photo Zoom Club.” The Mars Curiosity photo that reveals the latest find is shown below. The original NASA photo may also be viewed here.

Images pointing to the Egyptian Ankh relic in the Curiosity rover photo were uploaded to YouTube on Jan. 14.

UFO Sightings Daily’s Scott Warren said, “The cross stands out greatly from its environment with evenly round sides.”

According to Mars anomaly hunters, Earth archaeologists are unable to appreciate the significance of most Mars anomalies because they are trained to assess remains of ancient cultures only a few thousand years old. Unlike Earth’s archaeological sites, Martian archaeological remains are millions of years old and thus have undergone more extensive erosion and degradation. Besides, Martian civilization was wiped out by a nuclear explosion.

The evidence supporting the assertion that Mars was the theater of a nuclear holocaust millions of years ago comes from the U.S. plasma physicist and propulsion technologies expert Dr. John Brandenburg, who obtained his physics PhD from the University of California, Davis.

In his paper, “Evidence of Massive Thermonuclear Explosions in Mars Past, The Cydonian Hypothesis and Fermi’s Paradox,” presented at the 2014 Annual Fall meeting of the American Physical Society Prairie Section in Monmouth, Illinois, and published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, Brandenburg provided what he considered evidence that an ancient Mars civilization was wiped out by nuclear bombs detonated on the surface of the planet by an advanced alien race.

In the abstract of the paper, Brandenburg argued that analysis of imaging data suggests that multiple mixed fusion-fission explosions devastated an ancient civilization that once existed on Mars.

“Analysis of recent Mars isotopic, gamma ray, and imaging data supports the hypothesis that perhaps two immense thermonuclear explosions occurred on Mars in the distant past…”

“Analysis rules out large unstable ‘natural nuclear reactors,’ instead, data is consistent with mixed fusion-fission explosions…”

The physicist said that analysis of images from NASA orbiters reveals evidence of eroded archaeological remains, such the site that yielded the latest Ankh cross.

“Analysis of new images from Odyssey, MRO and Mars Express orbiters now show strong evidence of eroded archaeological objects at these sites.”

“Taken together, the data requires that the hypothesis of Mars as the site of an ancient planetary nuclear massacre must now be considered. Fermi’s Paradox, the unexpected silence of the stars, may be solved at Mars.”

According to Brandenburg, an alien race that detests “young noisy civilizations” detonated two nuclear bombs equivalent to at least 1 million megaton hydrogen bombs at two sites on the planet, wiping out two civilizations, the Cydonians and the Utoptians.

Cydonia coincides with the area where a NASA orbital craft spotted the famous human “face on Mars.”

In a 2011 interview, Brandenburg noted that the red color of the surface of Mars provides additional evidence of a nuclear device explosion.

Further evidence that Mars was the theater of a nuclear holocaust was obtained by NASA using gamma ray spectrometry, which detected uranium and thorium fallout of powerful nuclear blasts. He also pointed to the high concentrations of Xenon-129 in the planet’s atmosphere recently detected by NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft. The spikes in Xenon-129 levels in Mars atmosphere are comparable to what is observed on Earth in areas that have experienced a nuclear disaster, such as Chernobyl in 1986.

The latest discovery has sparked a lively discussion among Mars anomaly researchers who continue to say that the relics are evidence of an ancient civilization and culture that flourished on the planet millions of years ago.

A viewer, who agrees that the rover image reveals an Egyptian Ankh cross, said: “Exactly as stian grønås says. It’s clearly an ankh.”

Another said: “A place of worship or a shrine.”

A third observed: “Looks like building foundations behind it as well.”

But some were skeptical.

“At first I agreed it was a cross but when I looked at original it just looked like an indentation on right… just a slight hole… I think we are seeing more into it… but I am impressed the animal skull with maybe a blade in it.”

SOS: http://www.inquisitr.com/1774690/curiosity...t-mars-culture/

Previous thread about finding on Mars:
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3476479&hl=

If this true.. habis la... we use to believe Egypt pyramid was human made..

Mars Curiosity Rover’s Ancient Cat Statue

Mars Curiosity rover can’t seem to get a break from the weirder side of humanity’s search for alien life. While more serious scientists actually consider possibilities of discovering traces of microbial life — past or present — on the Martian landscape, armchair astrobiologists find more joy in finding potential artifacts that may provide evidence of thriving civilizations on Mars.

Over the past few days, alien hunting enthusiasts have been talking about one such “find” — an ancient cat statue reportedly discovered by Curiosity rover on a particular segment on Mars’ surface. YouTuber UFOvni2012 was one of the first to spot the alleged anomaly using publicly available NASA images.

Here is the picture of interest: an image of a section of seemingly normal rocks taken by Mars Curiosity rover mid-2014.

However, UFOvni2012 and other alien aficionados have implied that the images aren’t as normal as it appears. Using the magic of MS Paint, the UFO YouTuber kindly illustrated for us what we are supposed to see.

There you go! A Mars cat statue as promised. You’d have to squint a bit to make out the cat details, even with “proper” markers placed. Of course it could all be just the alien hunters wanting to see what they want to see, but hey, where’s the fun in not finding stuff?

A cognitive phenomenon has long since explained why people tend to see vague images in places where they don’t really exist, like the claimed Curiosity rover find above. Psychologists call it pareidolia, and Live Science says it commonly happens with religious sightings of vague images in seemingly normal objects. However, pareidolia isn’t just limited to finding the Virgin Mary on a half-eaten sandwich. It can also explain sightings such as the Mars cat statue discovery shown above.

Scientists aren’t closing their doors to finding and discovering actual evidence of life on Mars. Recently, researchers were excited to learn that spikes on the methane levels Curiosity rover recently discovered in the Martian atmosphere might actually hint at microbial life on our neighboring planet. Although scientists can’t say for certain, they are considering their existence an actual possibility. Scientist Paul Mahaffy said, “[And] we certainly should have an open mind. Maybe there are microbes on Mars cranking out methane, but we sure can’t say that with any certainty. It’s just speculation at this point.”

Mars Curiosity Rover will be the basis of a non-manned mission expected to launch in 2020.

http://www.inquisitr.com/1770982/mars-curi...-hunters-abuzz/

UFO researchers think not.

The video was taken from a high definition camera mounted outside the space station, as part of a NASA experiment in generating HD images from space, which would be the clearest video images of our home planet ever produced.

But every so often, the HD cameras capture something else as well — something which causes NASA to become extremely tight-lipped when asked by the taxpayers who fund the agency for answers as to what they are seeing in the baffling video images.

As seen in the video above, as posted by the YouTube UFO archivist Streetcap1, the clear shot of a distant but distinct object which appears to come into view at about the same level as the space station’s 275-mile high orbit, is quickly replaced by a message informing viewers that the NASA High Definition Earth Viewing Experiment is experiencing some sort of technical difficulties.

Granted, even with today’s highly sophisticated technology, streaming live video from space is not a perfect endeavor, with glitches and outages not unexpected. But UFO watchers say that this one is not the first instance of NASA suddenly dumping a video feed moments after a UFO appears on screen.

In fact, earlier this week, a blogger claimed to have spotted a giant UFO on the NASA feed shortly before the video dropped. But that sighting, with its oversize, animated UFO looked too good to be true.

The Streepcap1 sighting appears more realistic. Watch the video above as a grey object appears to emerge from behind the Earth, then rises as if to meet the Space Station — only to have the video feed quickly cut off.

Posted in: Odd News Posted: January 18, 2015
NASA Cuts Live Video As UFO Appears To Rise Over Earth’s Horizon As Seen From Space Station — Again

WARNING! UFO SIGHTINGS ALL OVER THE WORLD . A UFO shows up on live public Internet cam and NASA takes it off line,” Waring wrote on Sunday. “Who here is surprised by this? If you are, you are new here. UFOs are caught by researchers on a weekly basis and NASA does cut the line when they catch them. However the eggheads at NASA are not always focused on the screen and miss a lot of very interesting and sometimes very highly detailed UFOs.”

Several commenters on the video said that they emailed NASA asking for an explanation of the UFO sighting and why the live video was suddenly cut off, but no one at the space agency granted them the courtesy of a reply.

http://www.inquisitr.com/1765098/ufo-nasa-video-stream/

Previous cuts live video feed:
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...live+video+feed

Damn this NASA...

Dumb BMW M4 Driver Tries to Show Off

The BMW M4 is quite a car. It’s obviously completely street legal and something that anyone can use as a daily driver, but it’s equally at home on the track. It’s the kind of car that tempts drivers to do a little showboating, especially in front of a crowd of car enthusiasts. That’s exactly what happened to this guy and the results weren’t quite what he planned.

This happened this past Sunday at Cars & Coffee in Blackhawk, California, where folks line-up just to catch a glimpse of the assembled cars. You can see there’s quite a few people on this street corner, including whoever happened to be holding the camera that caught this guy’s very lucky mistake.

We say lucky because, although he managed to do some damage to his car and trounce his suspension, he still drove away in one piece after he jumped the median. It’s all because he got cocky and the M4′s torque put him in his place.

The timing couldn’t have been better as a pack of cars had just passed leaving a clear roadway when he headed into oncoming traffic. He also just missed hitting a couple of sign posts and some trees. He might be embarrassed, but at least he wasn’t hurt in what could have been a nasty wreck were the timing just slightly different.

https://autos.yahoo.com/news/dumb-bmw-m4-dr...-203042646.html

[@CeDhhVss] [@rhoyo]

Palm makes a comeback!

The Chinese consumer-electronics company wants to resurrect a once-beloved smartphone brand.

LAS VEGAS -- The Palm name, once a leader in the smartphone world, gets another chance at life thanks to Chinese consumer-electronics company TCL.

TCL said on Tuesday that it had acquired the rights to the Palm name and would "re-create" a new company based in Silicon Valley. The company added that it would use input from Palm's fan base, touting that it would be the largest crowd-sourced project in the industry.

TCL has been attempting to build up its brand and awareness in the US. The company is largely known for selling low-cost televisions, but it also has a mobile-device division, which uses the Alcatel OneTouch name. By utilizing the Palm name, which has a long history in the mobile world with the original Treo and Pilot handhelds, and later the WebOS-powered Pre, TCL is attempting to make a splash.

TCL's deal follows Lenovo's much splashier acquisition of another storied mobile company, Motorola, as a way to break into more-developed markets like the US. Palm, however, has been an inactive brand while Motorola was still selling phones before the deal. Still, there may be some nostalgia factor left that could help with TCL's profile.

"Palm has always carried a lot of affect and emotions," the company said in a statement.

The company said it would provide more details and a timeline of the project at a later date.

TCL acquired the name from Hewlett-Packard, which acquired Palm in 2010 with the grand vision of utilizing its WebOS mobile operating system across many products. HP ultimately mothballed its consumer mobile ambitions.

TCL isn't likely to use WebOS. In 2013, LG purchased the WebOS platform, which now powers its smart televisions.

TCL intends to use the Palm name for smartphones, but it's unclear how the company will juggle the Palm name with Alcatel OneTouch, which is making its own push to increase its visibility in the US.

http://www.cnet.com/news/palm-makes-a-come...eate-the-brand/
