[WTA] microATX 9TB HTPC + media server on Ubuntu

Hi all,

Thanks. I'm building this system in the UK - apologies for price in £. Bought all my WD 3TB Reds from Malaysia! Would appreciate some help with some questions below.

I intend to use this mainly as a HTPC media server running on Ubuntu with ZFS on RAIDZ1. Plan to use about half my SSD for L2ARC / ZIL.

Would appreciate any advice on build configuration + scalability. I don't spend time playing games at the moment but I was an avid gamer in my past life, so I'm not ruling that out if I am able to scale up my PC to do so.

1. Is my motherboard overkill? Should I just go with GA-Z87M-D3H instead of the GA-Z87MX-D3H. I've read that the minor upgrade to the Intel LAN controller from Realtek alone is worth the money. Would appreciate any alternatives. Also looked at Asus Z87M-PLUS and Gryphon (which is too expensive).

2. If I do intend to use this machine for games in the future, is there an option to dual-boot the system and run Windows alongside? I suspect this would mean I would not be able to access my ZFS RAIDZ pool but that is OK (as I have one extra slot in the case for an additional HDD).

Thanks.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor (£93.59 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£106.12 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£97.59 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (£103.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£106.92 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£106.92 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£106.92 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£106.92 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Silverstone TJ08B-E MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£73.30)
Power Supply: Corsair RM 550W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply (£88.26)
Keyboard: Logitech K400 Wireless Slim Keyboard w/Touchpad (£34.99 @ Maplin Electronics)
Total: £1025.52
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-09-29 16:03 BST+0100)

Help with engrish

Hello,

I'm sure I heard this word somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember.

It is used to describe wastage due to excessive initial 'outlay' (also probably improper use of outlay - haha).

So what I'm trying to describe can be exemplified by this:
Say you always buy 6 pints of milk because you think you can drink 6 pints. But at the end of the day you only drink 1 pint before expiry. 5 pints go to waste. The wastage of buying 6 pints instead of 1 pint can be defined by what word?

Thanks.

Camstudi recording crashed midway. How to recover?

Hello,

I was using Camstudio to make a screencap. Midway through the main Camstudio window disappeared, and only the 'flashing' window remained (if you use Camstudio you would know this), so the green borders identifying the area recorded is still there.

I decided to Ctrl + Alt + Del and terminate the 'flashing' window, and I managed to recover temp.avi

I then used the steps in this link http://forum.videohelp.com/topic293355.html to recover my recording, unfortunately what I got was a fuzzy picture of nothing more than what I would describe as from a fly's point of view.

I'm not able to properly determine the dimensions or framerate of my recording, so this could be faulting my repair, but it's good to know that there is data in that temp.avi

How do I proceed recovering it?

Thanks.

Fuse ratings on power cords?

Power cords all come with fuses (unlike American power cords?). Just to clear the air, I'm not asking about audiophile grade fuses or whatever.

I have no background on electronics and what I may be asking could sound completely daft to you. I checked the fuse on my powercords (cheap, generic ones they are!) and they are rated 3A, 5A and 10A. Does it matter what the rating is? Would I be 'bottlenecking' the current going into my equipment? Should I change all of it to 13A fuses? Or even better, buy cords which does not require fuses?

Silly, I know. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Why are we more attracted to our own race?

Marriages are more often of same race. Common sense genetics would tell you that a Chinese marrying an Indian would be superior 'genetically' to a Chinese marrying a Chinese, because at some grand level, there is a reduced chance of inbreeding by marrying outside your race.

So why is our preference skewed?

You wouldn't mount a cheap rock on a white gold ring, right?

Anyhoo, should I:
i) leave a note saying I found a ring and return it
ii) wait for the owner to leave a note in the kitchen asking if anyone has found it
iii) pawn it at the jeweller's tomorrow

edit: poll failed.

Will Malaysians ever be steezy?

Will Malaysians ever be steezy?

We lack the exposure to fashion forward cutting edge designers that define the current trends in today's fashion. Names like Ann Demeulemeester, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens, Raf Simons, Dries van Noten, Margiela et al. will never see the light of day in Malaysia.

The only designers Malaysians know are LV, Prada, Gucci, Armani. That money can be better spent elsewhere.

So without these names appearing even in fashion mags available to Malaysians, will we ever be steezy? Do you think that it'll be harder for us to be fashionable, even when in another country?

also, a public apology to calvinloke for previous disagreement on the forums.
