Cmco Road Tax Renewal Requirement

Dear all, just to ask, during MCO, we do not need to renew roadtax but just proof of purchase of insurance for our car. Is it still the same during CMCO now? I had actually renewed insurance and roadtax via MYEG but yet to receive them. Any idea if police will summon me if there is road block?

Life as a part time Uber Driver in JB

This post is a reference to those who wish to know how the life of a part time uber driver. Luckily for me, I have a flexible job where I can maximise the free times during day time to earn some extra bucks. It all started on one Friday, where I decided to use my lunch time to drop over office to attend the briefing to become an Uber driver. I had actually signed up via the app for sometime, but was quite lazy to go over to the office for the briefing. Therefore, my account was never activated until lately. Upon signing up, I was told that to complete 25 trips in 2 weeks to waive off the RM25 fees for background check on driver.

Day 0
I was driving on my way home, that I decided to go online on the test the app.In my mind, there should be no one requesting a ride, since I thought Uber was not so popular in JB yet. Boy was I wrong. In less than 5 mins, I got a request. However, as I was not prepared to take my first customer, I did not accept the request and quickly go offline.

Day 1

The following Monday, I got a SMS from Uber stating that I am left until next Sunday to complete my 25 trips for waiver of background check fees.. What the heck? My first week is 3 days only?!?!? At any rate I decided to start driving.

My first customer was a guy whom I pick from Johor Jaya. I guess its his first time using Uber too as he set his destination in Kallang Singapore. Politely, I declined him telling him that I am unable to drive in Singapore as it is not within service area and I do not have my passport with me. He asked why is the option available on app, I replied that I am not sure. In the end, he ask me to drop him off at CIQ instead. Overall, an uneventful ride where I successfully completed my first drive.

My second customer was a family from China staying at Thistle Hotel. They were asking to go City Square which is quite near. On the trip, they were asking on stuffs like distance to go Senai airport as they are going Tawau, what Chinese food is nice in City Square, which I recommended Dragon-i. It was a short drive and I ended my drive to go back office to get back to work….

Day 2

Tuesday, I decided to pick more customers today in my free time. Therefore, allocated more free time from work to pick more customers.

First customer was a middle age couple waiting at KSL. They had earlier sent their pick up location wrongly and they quickly sms me to inform to pick them up from KSL Coffee Bean. They were headed to City Square. The guy was mentioning that his payment seem to be not automatic anymore and I suggested that maybe the bank is blocking his credit card. True enough, his bank called him in a couple of minutes to verify that he is actually using his credit card for Uber transactions. Good vigilance from the bank! Dropped them off at City Square and drove off.

Second customers were a couple of young guys working at MSC Cyberport. They set the pick up place wrongly, and the place they set had a taxi waiting there. Worried that it might be some taxi gang finding trouble as read on newspaper, I drove further away and called the rider.. No one answered. Thinking that it’s a prank request, I decided go wait a while and the person callled back and clarified that they are at MSC Cyberport. They turn out to be a local chinese guy and a guy from China. From our conversation, found out that they were working for R&F properties. Sent them to Century Garden to pick their car and ended the ride. Went back to work and decided to continue later in the afternoon/evening.

Third customer was a teen asking to pick him up from Mount Austin to go back home at Taman Desa Tebrau. A very short and uneventful ride. Had the rider guide me as the gps does not show the road correctly.

Fourth customer, picked up a man in his 30s from Taman Daya and he ask to send him to Taman Daya Public Bank and drop him back to his house. Ok, this is something new, round trip. I drove to Public Bank with his direction as he gave better directions than the GPS and waited for him for about 10mins and he came back and directed me back to his house.

Fifth customer, got a request from Puteri Wangsa. Actually hesitated to accept this ride as distance is about 10mins away, but still accepted it anyway in the end. The rider is a hair stylist and wish to go back to his shop at Bayu Puteri. However, he requested to go by Permas Jaya as ge wanted to patronize his friend’s newly open stall to pack dinner. However, when we reach, his friend is still preparing and not yet started, therefore, would require to wait 30mins. So he decided to go back to his shop and drive back himself later. Bad jam to Permas bridge as expected during off work hours. Eventually reached and dropped him off and jam back home.

Day 3

Started work early and manage to get free time from afternoon today.

First customer was an Indian teen asking me to bring him from Pelangito Olympia college. Another short distance drive which I am fine as I am planning to achieve my 25 drive in this week. Short and uneventful ride.

Second customer, a girl who requested to pick her from Pelangi to Roost Café at downtown. Quite a young girl and initially I thought she is going to CIQ as she is carrying a few bags. Later on found out she is going Roost which is on the way anyway, so no harm done. Found out that she is from Batu Pahat and is waiting for her results before going Singapore. Working as a hair dresser now. In fact, she is using her boss’s uber account, which is why I was surprised that the name is a guy name but rider is a girl.

Third customer, a Singaporean guy which a China Lady requesting to go U dessert at Mount Austin from City Square. They were commenting on JB not having much changes and a lot of properties in construction now and Malaysia govt should be more relaxed on visa for China people to encourage them to come over to invest. Far distance ride which took quite a bit time due to jam at City Square. Finished the drive and stop to have my lunch.

Fourth customer, a lady requesting to pick her from KSL to go back to her home at Bayu Puteri. Seems like she went Tesco shopping. Also a short and uneventful ride. Went to meet a business partner for appointment after this drive and decided to continue driving after the meeting.

Fifth customer, gotten an Ang Moh customer from Doubletree hotel who wish to go Senai airport to fly to Kl. As its off work hours, roads were slightly jammed. Did not try to start any conversation but he did request to lower down the radio volume before he makes a call to his friend/business partner.

Sixth customer, did not expect to pick up this customer. Was leaving Senai airport when I got a request to pick up a rider from Senai airport. What to do, had to make a u turn back. Look at the rider number and noticed is an overseas number. A quick google search shows it’s a taiwan phone number. Wow, a taiwan mei mei? Minutes later, came a call from a Malaysia number and she say she is the rider and is walking out now. Informed her that I had yet to reach and she say ok. When reach, could not identify who is the rider, therefore called her back and saw the rider is a sweet girl. Found out she is a Malaysian but she registered her Uber account last time with her Taiwan number. Ask her where she is going and man its my lucky day. She is going to my taman where I live. So, I get to earn a few extra bucks going home. She ask me to speed a bit as she is rushing for a dinner and I drove pretty fast and got her there safely and ended my day.

Day 4

Today seem to be a slow day. Spent about half an hour driving with no alerts received. Open Uber rider app and noticed there are at least 10 Uber drivers. Decided to take lunch first before trying my luck later.

First customer, after lunch, got a request within 10mins. A couple at Klinik Australia wanted to go over to City Square. Another short drive but fine with me as I am aiming for 25 completed trips by tomorrow. Drop them off at City Square and left.

Second customer was a Japanese lady with her mother living at Wadi Hana Condominium. Arrived at the guardhouse, no sign of anyone. Called the customer up and she ask to drive in. Informed the guard house that I am picking someone, the guard let me in just like that. What lousy security! I’m not even a taxi. Anyway, arrived at the lobby still no sign of customer. Waited for a couple of minutes and called customer again. She say she is coming down. Soon she arrived with her mother and her mother actually chosed to sit in front while her daughter at the back. The daughter informed me that they wanted to go Plaza Pelangi which was a short journey and throughout the ride, they were conversing in Japanese. Although I took Japanese class before, but not using it in ages caused me to return most of it to my teacher. Therefore, no idea what they say. Dropped them off and drove off.

Third request came soon after. This time was to pick a customer from Living Room café which was nearby. Arrived there and saw a group of secondary students. Turn out that the rider is only a secondary school girl. Her friends were peeping in maybe go make sure I am the right person before they let their friend board my car. Surprising she wants to go to Wadi Hana where I picked up the previous customer. Another short ride and turns out to be a different condominium. Never knew there are so many condo there.

Fourth was a request from a Malay Singaporean couple to pick them from Giant Pelangi and drop them off at Sky Suites. Guessed they are Singaporean as the number registered in Uber is a Singapore number. They went Giant for shopping I guess with tons of grocery. Luckily can still fit in my car boot. They were pretty quiet throughout the journey and dropped them at their condo lobby.

Fifth request came soon and it was to pick up a customer from Jalan Dhoby. Was surprised to see customer was a young Malay couple who are still wearing their school’s uniform. Journey was to Uda Utama and later found out it’s the girl’s home. Throughout the journey not sure if they were making out or just hugging with the girl sleeping on the guys lap. When reached the destination, the girl’s tudung is off and her hair is a bit messy. Heard some camera clicking as well, maybe taking selfies? The boy then told me that now he wanted to go second destination which is to go home himself. He is staying at Damansara Aliff area and he was chatting with me after the girl was dropped out. Found out that he’s a frequent Uber rider for nearly a year. Hmmm, was Uber in JB so long? I’m not sure. Anyway he showed me some shortcut and dropped him off and decided to stop to go back to work to attend a meeting.

Sixth customer, was after my meeting and while making my way home, decided to see if I can get a couple of request. Luck was on my side and I got a request to pick a guy from Pelangi going to his hotel at Permas. From the conversation with the customer, found out that he is from KL and came down to JB for a business trip. I had picked him from his colleague’s home where he was invited to have dinner. He was asking me there are any cinema at the Jusco next to his hotel, I told him no. He said that looks like he gotta spend the night staying at his room only.

Last customer was surprisingly on my way home too. Another KL guy on a business trip here staying at Silka hotel. He set the wrong pickup point and I was wondering why he wants to get picked up in the middle of Pasir Gudang highway. Anyway, he called and mentioned his location and all was fine and I picked him up. I asked if its ok to follow the gps to his destination and he replied ok. However, turns out that he set the wrong destination again. He set it at a housing area but when we reached there, he ask why he don’t see Giant. I told him Giant is not here, we had passed it about 3 mins ago. So I took him to his correct destination and dropped him off and drove off to go home.

Day 5

Today will be the last day of the week I am working and I would be able to hit my 25 completed rides with just 5 more rides.

First customer was a request to pick a teen and his friend at taman gaya. They also asked me to make a stop at their friends house as they are going to play some games at Mount Austin. From the time the request came in, I already found the customer nickname familiar. He later told me I picked him up a couple of days ago. Oh ya, was the guy I picked from Mount Austin to Desa Tebrau a couple of days ago. After picking up their friend, the friend wanted to grab a bite and ask me to make a detour to McDonald’s drive thru. I obliged since I am not in a rush and the meter would be running anyway. They ordered their food and after that dropped them off at their destination.

Second customer was a customer sending request from Adda Height. Once I am near, I noticed that the location was at a construction site. Not sure if the place was correct, I called the rider. He mention that he is in the site but he already walked over go the E&Y mamak opposite. I said ok and turn over to the mamak shop to pick him up. He requested to go Molek and I drove him over there. After that, drove all the way to town and did not get any requesr therefore decided to go for my lunch.

Third customer request came soon after my lunch. Customer was asking to pick him at Tiong Hwa Association nearby. Reached there and they boarded the car. They were a group of 4 teens going to Old Temple at downtown. Dropped them off quite fast and went in search for my last 2 drive to hit 25.

Fourth request came asking to pick rider from Sri Tebrau. Upon arriving, it was a group of 3 malay liesdy and 1 malay guy. However, after they boarded, found out that they are Indonesians. They are working at Naughty Nuri which is like less than 5 mins away, and I believe they are just going to report for work. After dropping them, got 2 request but both were cancelled by the rider immediately. Hmmm, did I scare them?

Fifth request was from a rider which displays an Indian lady name. Upon reaching, it was slightly drizzling and I was thinking if I should go down and offer an umbrella. Decided against it, and the rider came in shortly. She requested to go Puteri Specialist Hospital to visit her friend. During the short ride, she talk about her experience with Uber here and India which were mostly pleasant. Dropped her off and yay, completed my 25th drive.

Sixth customer, after work decided to try my luck to see if any request will come in. Wow, a request came less than 2 mins after I turn on and it was during surge of 1.2x. Rider are 3 teens, 1 boy and 2 girls requesting to pick them from Plaza Pelangi. Once boarded they mention that they wanted to go City Square and dropped them off there.

Seventh customer request came in immediately after my ride ended. Lucky me, rider is at the same location where I dropped off the last rider. Called the rider to tell her that I am here already and that I just dropped off my last passenger. Inittially she had difficulty finding my car but saw me finally. It was a group of 2 malay ladies and 1 chinese lady. Think they are staying together and just off their work. They requeated to go their house at Setia Tropika. A lil jam due to road construction but eventually reached the destination in half an hours time. Time to end my driving for the day as my wife is asking me to go back for dinner already.

With this, I would end my stories as I intend to write about my first 5 days as a reference for those who want to consider driving Uber in JB but could not find any real life info.
Thanks for reading and if you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Those who are interested to know how much I earned gross for these 5 days? Its around RM220 only. Hours spent and kilometre drove, I’m not really sure. But overall, it’s a fun experience that I will continue in my free time.
