canon 400D + 17-85 IS USM or basic kit lens?

hi all, i'm torn between the 400D + 17-85 IS USM promo lens or 400D + 18-55 kit lens.
i like to snap portraits, flowers, kids and landscapes. Backpacking quite a bit too, therefore can't afford to carry an extra len.
is the 17-85 IS USM as good as 50mm/1.8 for portraits?
any latest price for the 400D + 17-85 IS USM and location?
pls advise. tks.

i've been reading abt ppl selling their items (cameras and lenses) in LYN with unfilled warranty but no receipts. i'm confused, don't we need to furnish our receipt to proof date of purchase at the time when making a warranty claim? pls help. i'm interested in getting some items soon but no clear on this issue. tks in advance.

notebook lcd screen

Hi all. my 2month old notebook has uneven backlighting. the bottom part of the lcd screen is brighter than the top. it's been like that from day 1 but i didn't pay much attention to it as it still works perfectly. only thing is when the screen saver comes on (winXP) then it's very obvious becoz it's mono colour and dark. does this constitute as defect? any ill effect in the long run? anyone out there has the same situation? is the lcd at the end of its life? Advise needed. Tks.
