Just sharing my latest update, I am starting this year with passed a few certification Got a few from Coursera and from AWS. I am super happy about it, i have spent like a month studying every night just to passed the exam. Reading documentation, keep updated from blog post, taking a mock prep exam purchased online and reading a few tips from former developer who passed the exam. Its been a wild ride.
My current company has been kind enough to sponsor every training that ive taken just to prepare for the exam.

Before this I was oppose the idea of getting certification. My naive thinking got me like the information is free, why should you pay a certain organization just to get the cert? From getting a job point of view, a certification is a plus but project/experience is what get the job done. Cert look promising for fresh grad and not for experience worker. The list continue but boy, Ive changed (only a little bit)

I am not a fan of cloud platform. For example AWS. Maybe i just list a few points :

1. They are competing with their own product. Got a few underlying algo/technique that just keep repeating and apply to a few of their service and they kind of proud too. Ive guessed that they have their own use case but its not that specific either. Some are just overlapping and no reason of choose the alternative other than they just exist

2. Cool service name. I just hate it. It sounds cool but at the same time I couldnt justify why it sound that way. It doesnt help to explain what it offer too.

3. Lack of documentation. I mean they have a lot to write about but their service just keep increasing in number with fancy name but no support/documentation. When trying to get contact with their support. They will help you but only to an extends what they are capable off and not based on what your team need

To clarify, my experience is only for a certain product of the cloud provider and more experience playing with the product helps without depending too much on documentation. They will update in the future, they always will and must. They have a lot of best features too if you are wondering. Just try and figure it out.

The experience to prepare getting a cert is what makes it a valuable experience. You are been force to accepts their own propose solution because that is the right answer according to them. As for me, i always list out the nearest competitor of every service that I have been used in the past. Just to compare, then find out there is a better way and a specific use case why need to use this and that. Thus, updating. I believe most of us do this but, not for some people?

This is not true for all but for some. There are people who maintain what they best known of something to be relevant in the future. I mean, it is hard. To keep updated, to challenge yourself to keep motivated. At least for me. Thus, taking an exam periodically is not a bad thing. Paying a certain organization just to get their cert is worth? That is depending on your research.

You can bootstrap a project and use latest/a certain tech that you are interested? Go on. Its always better (at least for me) choice compare to taking a cert. Action speaks louder. But seriously, that is time consuming. Maybe some will say that depends on a person, yeah, you are right. Play your card well.

So, my next step is trying to apply for job and practice for interview. This has been an yearly extra curricular just to reach out potential employer and getting a feedback of what I can improve. Ill share the experience later in the future.

Anyway, I am looking for .net 1-2 years experience for an open position. Ping me if you are interested.

Thank you for reading and i wish you great day ahead

To my surprise, every panel agree that i bring a positive vibe to team members and according to the team members, they look up to me as an example. This caught my attention for a while because i never intend to do so.

Today ive take MBTI test and it shows ESFP as the result. According to the website,

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Entertainers have a unique quality that makes them exceptional in some careers, and miserable in others – they mirror the mood around them. When people with the Entertainer personality type are at a party or concert, they reflect that mood, giving them that “party people” image. When their friends are sad, they mirror that with sympathy and empathy. And when there is a crisis, Entertainers adapt as well, matching the intensity of the situation.

and this is somehow true. Ive feel great working with around of people instead of working alone. Ive been thinking whats the right combination of ESFP + IT? So i did a quick search on google and found this comment on reddit:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I worked on IT and switched to IT recruiting. It’s been 15 years and it’s very rewarding in a lot of ways. We are naturally good at being connectors and it’s the cliff notes of all kinds of IT you never new existed. Way more money too

All this time im too focus on the technical of how to get a job done, never consider whats best for my mood because i always find a way to fill that emptiness. If maybe, ive take the test before I will consider to switch sides?

Working with computers are great, new language/framework/library is not a threat. Every q&a has been exist on the internet. The only challenge in this field in the long run would be how do you fill client expectation.

Not just programmers, maybe it could work with other fields too. Dont quote me, it just some suggestion.

If you work in IT can you share your MBTI result?

Anyway, my friend looking for a job and the stack his been using mostly js/react. If you guys are able to help please comment/dm email for my friend

Thank you for reading and i wish you great day ahead

Programmer come in V6

TLDR : Previously I am having a dilemma of accepting a job that require to move out to a different state. Its a startup company. A new role(level up). Increment.

[UPDATE][16 Dec 21] I have been accepted a job that basically the same as my current role and level but with and increment and different industries. Previously in vendor environment and next is in house hardware and software development. Im not sure if there a specific term for this. Basically instead of serving multiple clients, I will be working and maintain for a product that has been built solely by this company.

As of now, compare to early of this year, multiple vacancies spring up like mushrooms. Now is the best time for those of you that wait since early of this year to hop to another company. That is after you evaluate carefully the salary + benefits

My friend share to me a quick formula to evaluate a job offer, assuming the non-monetary benefit are the same:

1. Good : >30% of current salary, short travel distance,
2. Average : 15% - 25%, medium travel distance,
3. Bad : <10%, far travel distance

What if 10% but short travel distance and 30% but far travel distance? I leave it out for u to figure it out. I am very sure there are many factors to be considered but hey, its a quick guide. ps: might need to calculate your travel distance

For typical benefits (startup/sme in MY) :

1. Medical Insurance 1k/30k (inpatient/outpatient)
2. 14 annual leave + Public holiday
3. Paid overtime

Bonus? Almost not exist. For my entire experience only 1 mnc got 2 evaluation per year give bonus and 1 glc provide an advance during festive season.

Negotiable benefits:

Hybrid. Its what they called in most job ads that ive found. Work from home + office like 2 days home + 3 days office, not all company offer this but its good to ask.
If you have more care to share?

So Ive just list some of common salary package and benefits that u might get out there. Be sure to compare with people on the same industry. This thread is mainly for IT.

Should you share your salary among coworkers? This is my own opinion and you can skip if you want.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

No. Just dont. Unless you got a job offer and u will get out from there later. If you got the higher pay, the other party might be demotivate and vice versa.

and Yes, please share if you are ready to challenge yourself for the best. Basically its depends on your negotiation skill.

------------------------------------------------------------

Previously on lowyat forum:Version 1, Version 2,Version 3,Version 4,Version 5

Hey there, how are you guys doing. If you are struggling, im with you, barely survive this pandemic, made some bad decision but still within my tolerance, we can do this. lets go

So guys, i have been working full time and part time. Best of both world. I am able to do my job at my workplace at the same time the things that ive been doing also contribute a little benefit to my part time gig. I have stop gaming definitely. It doesn't give me joy compare to real life experiment where I will turn it into business opportunities. You might say "Ugh, what a boring life u got there mate", yeah, boring indeed, but it keeps me to move on. That`s the most important thing i guess

Instead of job hopping, Ive tend to build a connection of people, not that i plan it before, it just happened and now im taking advantages of it. Learn a lot during these pandemic by not just become a good employee but to become my own boss. The struggle is within my self, need a lot of discipline and blend with people who you consider as role model. Slowly but surely you will get there.

Not saying u should stop entirely stop job hopping, I still encouraged people to job hop once in a while, but while you stay at your current workplace, try to maintain a healthy relationship among your colleges and bosses.

Latest update:

Recently ive been offered an opportunity that makes me to move out from my comfort zone. Package wise is depends on project deliverable. It has some risk but i feel like a coward if i dont take the risk. So i need junior senior advise here how do you really evaluate risks.

The company is new (<5 years) and ive been in startup several times, perk of being in startup that i like is high payment + new idea, startup is not afraid of latest tech and i can implement it straight away in a project. But the downside is most of startup dont survive.

So i got some time to carefully think about the offer, then maybe some replies here could help regarding the situation that im having

Im closing my dilemma with thank u for reading and i appreciate any feedback.

For young people who are just step into this industry, normally i would advise:

1. Build your portfolio easily by following tutorial online and push to your Github account, as simple as CRUD app will do.

2. Focus on using single language and master the fundamental, dont rush. You can easily tapaw other language if you master the 1st language that u learn

3. Choose your path wisely, u can become web, mobile, front end, back end anytime anyday but will that last? You need to do a little bit of research by comparing number of job vacancy versus average salary with respect to your level (junior/senior)

Maybe u guys can share a tip how to be good at it.

ps: Not related to any specific topic, but to be strong in fundamental so that its easier to tackle the hard topic when it comes

cheers

Programmer come in V5

For those who wonder:Version 1, Version 2,Version 3,Version 4

Quick update : Hi there, Im looking for a job change (again). It has been tougher every time when u have to clarify whats the reason to jump again. Honest truth? Because I can and able to do that. Did i tell them that? Of course a big NO. Default answer would be, im looking for a new environment to practice my new skill, im trying to rank up from skill worker to management line, bla bla bla. Normally, interviewer will just accept whatever your answer is but not if u bitching about your current company. Be wise to filter the truth.

Anyway, I have several interviews coming up and a few pending offers. Not that im proud of. By far this is the worst season of job hopping. My get-interview-ratio drop by several percent to 25%. Out of sample of 10 jobs that I have applied, only 2 or 3 company calls for interview session.

So far the most convincing platform to use are :

1. Linkedin ( Direct apply to employer, some approach from Recruiter)
2. Google job (Not sure what its called, it appear when u are searching jobs trough google search)
3. Glassdoor (I really love this one, their review tabs are honestly trust able, u know when 3 person give a bad review and then this 1 review is rating like super high, yeah, its from their management to cover up the rating)

The worst platform to look for a job:

Jobstreet. I dont know what happen, during my time as a fresh grad, like 85% job interview are coming from here, but nowadays, even after "3,4 or even 8" times they look at your profile and they just wouldnt call. It just me or I dont know. Maybe u guys have other things to brag for

side note: if any of u working in jobstreet, lets talk

I am also a human, failure is an option and also a result for some interview that ive attended. My advice is, dont stop moving forward. Ive met several hiring manager, including ceo, cto of some company, some do have mutual understanding and some are dont. When u met one of this key person, some of them expect that u will agree with his point and things will be easier for them, unfortunately I always stands firm with my decision and view. With my limited experience, I am sure there a some truth in what the other party are saying, same rule applied to me, but, everybody entitled his/her own opinion. By keep moving forward, i mean that:

1. remember every conversation u had during interview
2. keep applying jobs, it just a number game
3. attend workshop, meet new people and have a conversation
4. as programmer, u are a problem solver, every bit of a problem are your potential client in the future

for those who are still searching for job:

1. IT support, shift based
2. Front end (vue, html, css)
3. Back end (python, nodejs, java)
4. Mobile Dev (native)

pm me details. I try to help u as much as i can. Ill update job description later.

Ok. Now, i dont have any specific topic to discuss, but, in the future, I cant no longer keep job hopping like this, so I thought that its normal for someone to venture into business. I think that product based business would survive longer than vendor/service based business. If you are having the same thought, come lets talk and share our view, we might end up building this together.

Programmer come in V4

For those who wonder:Version 1, Version 2,Version 3

Quick update : I have an iv for tomorrow, already got offers but the other parties didnt honor my expectation salary, im just be professional and keep looking

Been trying to secure a job for the last several month, heard the news like Paypal shut down its operation center, days by days this line of career path keep getting saturated and IT company/operation closing down, make it harder to find a new job without experience.

It is limited. I cant be choosy but I have to. If not im just wasting my time. You dont go to interview that u know theres nothing good in it. So when i get the opportunity to attend an iv, there are several criteria that I think it is worth the shot:

1. Will they pay me? Now, Im not /k standards. Im way below than that but in reality we have to optimize our option to maximize the profit gain from it. The most important factor is the location. KL, Kerinchi (previously Bangsar South), CyberJaya, Damansara (not all) provide higher paid salary compare to other places. I would say Penang but based on my observation, only Manager level get paid high enough at there. Obviously, Im just kuli

2. MNC, GLC, Gov, SME, Startup? Follow the money, this is no brainer. Some say u would learn more in Startup, it is true. But when it times to expand your horizon, they will ask for your payslip and make adjustment from there. Its bullshit, they will advertise the salary range from XX to XXX but when it comes to u, yes i mean u, that has lower income that XX, they will ask for payslip, now they offer u current salary + 10% and thats not even the lowest range that they advertise.

3. More than 2 meet up? Forget it. For kuli level it is not worth your time.

4. Web developer. Requirement : Java, C++, php, js, python, R, react, android studio, xcode, artificial intelligent, iot, blockchain. If u see this, if u are a beginner, avoid it at all cost. The company does not know what stack did they want to use, thus, a mess up team u got there. But, there is a chance that u will become the Team Lead. Now its your responsibility to find the right stack

These are examples of flag i would consider every time i get an offer to attend interview. Just a simple guideline that i can think of. There are some cases of mine that i want to know if any of u guys share the same experience:

1. Gov agency, automotive industry

Invite all the candidates. Need to do some written test. After that, candidates divide into a team of x people, do a presentation. panel reject answers that do not happen to be the right answer based on their point of views and not the fact. Triple facepalm. Have nothing to do with programming.

2. GLC, automotive industry

Sent email, call asking candidates to attend iv for the next day. A bunch of candidates attend at the same time for the same position. only 1 position available.

3. GLC, Financial Industry

hr and technical manager as panel. technical manager asking about tools and skill that i can contribute, i stutter a lot and keep adding mistakes towards conversion of my mother tongue language to english, hr keep pointing that soft skills are the priority. i guess soft skill > technical skills to work in here

Ill share it again next time. Share yours too

PS: If u have sibling or cousin or any family relative that would like to continue their study in computer science or IT, would u encourage them?

For those who wonder:Version 1, Version 2

Little update: Been in this field roughly 3 years since graduation, not a senior yet, so far the progress is ok, been up and down, manage to make it through with everyone else, cheers

Ill have interview around next week, been research hows the progress and seriously, i dont think ill pass, but ill just go coz im too naive or just bluntly overestimate myself, im not sure either. This is not the 1st time ive done this, as far as i remember, b4 this, i just create some excuses to give it a try, like:

1. come on, just a simple test. turns out its hard af
2. exp, u will never come to this big company again, just go in and gain exp from it. result: yeah, sometimes i gain something, and sometimes no, normally its because of HR is one of the panel
3. keep updated. does this make sense to u? at least for me, coz im interested of which tech they use in business

Wish me luck

Anyway, here are some of my latest dilemma:

1. been working with some master/phd graduates. we are doing the same task but higher ups just keep highlight them as in they are the only one who work. well its not their fault. y i dont have 1? i still paying up my last degree debt. and even i dont have debt, i personally think the fees are not worth because online courses are more cheaper and advance compare with our outdated syllabus. i have any other options to obtain those kind of certs? i am interested to learn even without the certs, but without it, higher ups will not let me move upwards, not just them, i think everyone else, dont u agree?

2. i know we will use open sources/library that available in the market, but dont u think we are taking things for granted? how do u overcome this? normally the libraries are hard to code, and require some level understanding, which is im not there yet. how do u suggest to learn any open sources/library available in the market? (this are general, it may be occur to any kind of languages)

3. is there any hobbies that is cheap? the idea is to learn while enjoy it at descent price. last time ill enjoy doing mobile development, as ive already got the device.

thanx guys

Senior Software Eng/Dev/Programmer/IT come in

Kisah orang IT

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

10 sebab aku menyesal belajar sains komputer (sekadar baca sahaja)

1. Kerenah client yang pelik-pelik (Clients from hell)

“Mana gambar Dato’ / Datin / Menteri / KSU / Dr?”
“Boleh tak pakai gambar ni?” Dan besarkan?” (bagi gambar kecil dalam words. Celaka!)

Habis tu apa point belajar degree sampai 4 5 tahun?

3. Waktu kerja yang tidak menentu

Satu lagi tradisi yang menjadi trademark industri ICT. Masuk kerja awal, balik lewat, kadang-kadang hingga lewat pagi. Kenapa kami selalu kena stayback? Baca point-point berikutnya.

Biadap.
Maka, berduyun-duyunlah programmer berkampung di office kerana nak siapkan projek sebab petang tadi time orang punch out balik, baru design approve, siap ada amendment, esok pagi bos / client nak tengok. Tak ke celaka sungguh perangai mereka ini?

6. Tanggapan masyarakat - kerja bidang IT kerja mudah.

Ex student science comp atau IT? Ramai kawan-kawan aku lari bidang, ada yang jadi polis, kastam, imigresen, PTD, balik kampung jaga lembu, buat bisnes MLM. Life is hard.

Ibarat sayur dipasar.

9. Aku benci dengan mentaliti “Tak nampak ciri Malaysia pun sistem ni?”

Kenapa semua benda nak “nampak Malaysia?”
Kau duduk bawah tempurung tahun bila pun, tak tahu lah.

10. Teknologi IT terlalu laju berkembang.

Tapi kalau kau belajar IT, baru kau belajar PASCAL, 5 tahun lepas tu orang dah tak pakai dah PASCAL. Baru ko nak kenal Windows 98, 2 tahun kemudian keluar Windows 2000. Kalau dulu kau belajar Visual Basic 6, 5 tahun lepas tu orang dah pakai .Net. Baru kau berjinak2 dengan PHP, sekarang dah keluar macam2 PHP framework. Kalau masa belajar dulu network semua pakai kabel, beberapa tahun lepas tu dah keluar teknologi wireless.
Last2 generasi tua IT yang otak dah tepu nak belajar teknologi2 baru ni hanya layak jadi mandur sahaja mengarah2 budak2 muda buat kerja.

tldr: vroom vroom

Morning guys,

been wondering if there is/are any working people besides education sector have some experience regarding this

For my case, ive been trying to get funds from company since last year. Im not a key person in the company thus thats y my favor is not their priority. What i have tried are:

1. contact hr. Hr said need to discuss with top management, after that they will discuss in a meeting whether to approve or not, hr recommend to discuss with manager first.

2. discuss with manager. 1 to 1, face to face, manager said it is good (positive sign), so i left the manager room with happy face, but later, when i ask for it(through messenger/message), didnt get any responds after that

a little bit info about the training: support hrdf scheme, online certificate

now, im in dilemma whether to proceed coz i dont want to be label as pusher, although i am in nature are and also persistence. the only sign i have is verbal and non recorded thus there is no black and white. there are a little workaround that i think might be able to work, so i need those experience people to comment me on this:

1. trade off with other benefits, such as dental and optical, means exchange those training with this benefits, its not equivalent in price but at least company didnt hv to pay me extra compared with other employee

2. asking for financial assistance from online cert provider, need to provide reasoning, but i think they will only help student not working adult

didnt try it yet but im planning to. there is something that bothers me regarding hrdf scheme, normally i will only asking free training by hrdf, and did a little research regarding hrdf, for company that contribute to hrdf, suppose the training are free right? is there any loss if the company send one of their employee to the training?

[UPDATE]

still waiting for manager answer, after that, ping hr again, discuss again, now they will decide.

seriously is it so hard to get a training? company got loss something when their employee take part in any training by hrdf?

on a second thought, if no responds from both side, ive got nothing, i dont know whether scholarship i can apply on besides hrdf. anybody can give any insight, im loss of option here
Programmer come in V2

I have been interviewed by a lot of IT & engineer company, after that, i make a schedule to practice and enhanced my skills. One day, the hr of a company call me and offered me a job.

The job scope is mainly for oracle PL/SQL. i hv experienced in sql, but still need a lot of practicing. My concerns are :

1. pl/sql is better compared to java for career prospect? or both has their own advantage?
2. anyone can share their experienced in this field?
3. i want to learn more about this field, should i practice sql first?
4. pl/sql is focus on which development? mobile? web?

5. reserved to ask later

btw, thank u for all from previous thread that contribute a lot of help that makes me explore various field in programmer world. Previous thread

Also i want to mention that a serious company is always respond by 1 week if they are truly want u to work with them. 2 weeks also have but rarely. by the 3rd week u should move on.

Worst company ever :

1. ask for a technician, during interview they told me to do a web maintenance, after a day, they bump their advertise, ask for a web dev

2. a recruiter, find me to fill a 3 month contract job, ask me to attend interview with him, after travel so far away, ask me to do a test, i need time to be ready for the test. reject straight away, its normal if u have to travel, im ok, but the thing is when they interested with u they will call u everyday, but once ur not suit for the position, they will treat u like nobody. a truly disappointing. i might be generalize all recruiters but its the truth. be ready if ur facing one of them after this. my advise is dont treat them as a friend, treat them as bridge where u just across on it to get a better job.

3. 2nd time for technician, during interview ask for experienced people only, dont they do their homework? at least read my resume before ask me to attend the interview. they called for 2nd interviewed, reject it politely

4. rule of the thumb is dont expect them to give their answer if ur not selected even if u ask the hr to inform u. nobody cares about u.

Best interviews:

1. they tell me the correct way to present my cv to employer

2. the hod still treat me nicely with a smile even i cant answer most of the question that her ask me

3. required to play game to pass the interview, hr is the same age as me and pretty too

4. small company, the boss directly interview me with passion. he tells me the history of the company and how the company stands by it own.

5. rule of the thumb to confirm the best result is when they are interested with u, the interview will takes around >1 hour. if not, depends on the situation, but if they are several people around u, make sure the interview takes more time than others.
