Help setting up Asus router as repeater

Hi all. Would appreciate some help, as I'm not very good at networking stuff. I have an Asus RTN14UHP router set up in 'repeater mode' to root/primary router for Unifi which is the DLink DIR850L. The Asus is located upstairs while the DLink is on the ground floor. Using the automatic settings when setting up the Asus in repeater mode, it works fine....until I turn off or power cycle the root router. I turn off the root router sometimes when I leave home, then when I get back I turn the root router back on (the Asus stays on). However, when I turn the root router back on, the Asus loses internet connection. I can still connect to the Asus SSID and access the router page at 192.168.1.1, but the wifi ssid list on windows and on my phone says the Asus SSID has 'no internet'. This will persist until I reboot/power cycle the Asus, which is a bit of a hindrance to do everytime. After rebooting the Asus, it works fine with internet connection, etc. This happens everytime without fail. So I tried fiddling with the Asus settings: from 'obtain LAN IP automatically' to manually setting an IP for it which is outside the DHCP range of the root router (something like 192.168.0.201 etc), didn't work. Then I tried telling it to manually choose the 8.8.8.8 DNS server, also didn't work. In both cases either the Asus would lose internet once root router is rebooted, or the Asus network will be funky and not be able to connect to it at all or access the router page, etc.

Then I tried setting the Asus LAN IP to 192.168.0.2, this worked ok for awhile but then somehow it messed up with my HyppTV (got all laggy and no picture, had to turn off the Asus router only then HyppTV would work normally). So I reset the Asus and went back to default settings for it in repeater mode. So, right now it works ok until the root router is power cycled/rebooted.

Why does this happen? What do I need to do so that the Asus router maintains it's internet connection once the root router is turned back on? This is driving me nuts. Would appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

P.S: Also, my 2011 iMac refuses to connect to the Asus network even when it's working fine. Other PC's, laptops, Macbook Air, iPad, other devices all can connect to the Asus network except for this iMac. It simply says 'cannot connect to network' or something like that, or it would connect but says 'no internet' even when other devices can use the internet on the Asus network just fine. Any idea why?
