Chandru Suryakanth was on June 22 sentenced to 12 weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to one count of sexual exposure and one charge of outrage of modesty.

According to court documents, Chandru was at a supermarket in Sembawang at about 11.45pm on April 7, 2025, when he committed the crimes.

The victim, who had finished paying for her groceries and was about to exit the store, was walking past the offender when he used his left hand to touch her thigh.

The woman shouted at him, and he apologised before walking away.

Distressed, the woman called her husband, who confronted Chandru. Singapore's road rules stipulate that no parking is allowed on this side of the road at all times, except for immediate pick-up and drop-off.

He then made faces before hurling profanities in Cantonese at them. One of the security guards yelled back at him in retaliation.

A man on the ground can be heard trying to mediate the situation, while another woman on the bus was seen attempting to hold the man back as he gestured agitatedly at the guards.

A longer video of the incident, shared by Hong Kong media platform Edu Lancet on Sunday, shows tensions easing afterwards.

One security personnel is heard saying that they had "talked very nicely", and that it was the man who escalated the scenario.

She explained that the bus is not allowed to stop here, and that she had told them to move to park somewhere else.

Another staff member, who appeared to be the boss, then approached the principal, to which he immediately told her, "Okay I'll listen to you. You're very polite, I like you."

That staff member explained that parking there was "dangerous" in Mandarin, and clarified where they were allowed to park.

In the video, the security guards can be seen wearing a shirt with the SAFRA logo on it.

HK officials demand written report
The original poster of the video alleged the man to be Lee Cheuk-hing, the principal of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School in Tuen Mun, located in northwest Hong Kong.

Edu Lancet claimed that the school was on a study tour here from May 20 to 25.

It also claimed that the incident happened at about 6pm on May 22, while the staff and students were headed to an unnamed Western restaurant in Jurong for dinner.

According to the South China Morning Post, the Hong Kong Education Bureau has "expressed its concerns" over the case, and was said to have approached the school and its sponsoring body.

It also said that it would keep in touch to provide advice.

"The bureau has demanded that the school seriously follow up on the issue and submit a detailed written account. The school has activated its crisis management team to investigate the matter thoroughly," a spokeswoman for the Bureau was quoted as saying.

"If a teacher were found to have breached the professional conduct, the bureau would review the teacher's registration and take appropriate action based on the nature and severity of the incident."

Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty Images
EDITOR’S NOTE: This story includes graphic descriptions some readers may find disturbing.

The seventh-grade girl whom singer d4vd is charged with killing and dismembering died of “multiple penetrating injuries,” according to an autopsy report released Wednesday.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 14, had wounds on her chest and abdomen that “may represent sharp force injuries,” the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office said in the report, which was signed in December but sealed for months at the request of law enforcement.

A tattoo reading “Shhh….” was found on the inside of her right index finger, the autopsy report said, similar to a tattoo d4vd has on his finger.

On Celeste’s left hand, two fingers had been removed.

The findings revealed more gruesome details seven months after Celeste’s dismembered remains were found in d4vd’s Tesla in Los Angeles. The vehicle was apparently abandoned in the Hollywood Hills and towed to a police impound lot, where an employee noticed a foul smell emanating from the trunk last September and alerted authorities.

Celeste had been reported missing by family and friends multiple times, starting in early 2024. She and d4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, appeared together in a Twitch livestream that January. Between then and March 2024, he was photographed getting out of a black Tesla near the seventh grader’s home.

Celeste was also photographed backstage at one of his Los Angeles shows in June 2024. She was last seen alive going to d4vd’s home in April 2025.

Prosecutors claim d4vd had a sexual relationship with Celeste and killed her “when she threatened to expose his criminal conduct and devastate his musical career,” according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

It’s been 7 months since Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found dead in d4vd’s car. Why did charges take so long?

The singer was arrested last week and has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder. CNN has sought comment from d4vd’s attorneys about the autopsy report.

Evidence includes child pornography
At a hearing Thursday — one year after Celeste was last seen alive — Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman said evidence against the singer includes “a significant amount of child pornography” on Burke’s iPhone, as well as a wiretap and up to 40 terabytes of data obtained by various law enforcement agencies.

“We’re eager to set a trial date,” Silverman said in court.

Burke was led into court in a bright orange jumpsuit and leg and arm shackles, which were removed by a deputy after he was seated. He spent most of the time gazing at the defense table in front of him, except when he was addressed directly by the judge.

Burke’s defense asked to postpone the preliminary hearing, which had been set for Thursday, because it is waiting on evidence from the district attorney’s office. The hearing is now set for May 1.

Under the law, child pornography evidence can’t be obtained without adhering to a certain protocol from the court, Silverman said.

Pieces of blue plastic were embedded in wounds, autopsy finds
Celeste’s arms and legs had been severed, and blue plastic fragments were “embedded in the cut surfaces” and submitted into evidence, the report details.

She also had skin abrasions, but the medical examiner couldn’t determine the causes because of the severe decomposition of the body.

The injuries described were most consistent with stabbing and the girl was likely dismembered after she died, said Dr. Priya Banerjee, a board-certified forensic pathologist who reviewed the report that was made public and is not involved with the case.

“This is a very difficult case because of the decomposition,” Banerjee said. “It looks like likely a knife made (the wounds) but I can see why they use the wording they did, given the condition of the body.”

Alcohol was also detected in her system, but the medical examiner said it’s unclear whether it was present due to ingestion or decomposition.

‘It is unfathomable they have had to wait this long’
The autopsy results have caused “profound emotional pain” for Celeste’s loved ones, an attorney for the family said in a statement.

“The Rivas Hernandez family is absolutely devastated by the findings contained in the Medical Examiner’s report involving the horrible and gruesome death of their beloved daughter,” the statement says. “They respectfully ask for privacy, understanding, and patience as they process this information.”

Details of the case had been hidden as authorities convened a grand jury and shielded investigative findings from the public.

“After several months, I am grateful this information can now be released, not only to the public, but also to the grieving family enduring loss,” Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner Dr. Odey Ukpo said in a statement.

“It is unfathomable they have had to wait this long to learn what happened to their daughter.”

DA says Celeste was killed after threatening to report crimes
D4vd pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of first-degree murder with special circumstances, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 years old and mutilating human remains.

D4vd’s attorney said his client is innocent.

“The actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez and he was not the cause of her death,” attorney Blair Berk said after the singer’s arraignment. “We will vigorously defend David’s innocence.”

Apparently he killed her as she threatened to expose him as a paedophile. Chopped up her body and stored it in his Tesla until it was found.

One of his songs was used in Invincible.

(File photo: REUTERS/Jorge Silva)

SINGAPORE: Former Japan and AC Milan midfielder Keisuke Honda will play in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) next season, it was announced on Friday (Apr 10).

In a press release, Albirex Niigata Singapore, which will be known as FC Jurong from the 2026/2027 SPL season, said that Honda will join the club in August.

Honda began his career playing for Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight, before stints in the Netherlands (VVV-Venlo) and Russia (CSKA Moscow). After about three years with AC Milan in the Serie A, he went on to feature for clubs in Australia, Brazil and Portugal, among others.

The 39-year-old has close to 100 appearances for Japan and featured for the Samurai Blue at three World Cups. Honda also spent a stint coaching Cambodia's national team from 2018 to 2023.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to play for FC Jurong. As I turn 40 this year, I am pursuing several personal challenges, including a Guinness World Record for scoring in the most countries’ top leagues," said Honda.

"However, my primary goal with this club is to win the league title. There are a couple of very strong rivals, so it will be a tough challenge, but I am determined to achieve it."

Honda, who is also co-founder and general partner of investment firm X&KSK, has been spotted in Singapore from time to time.

Late last year, he posted pictures on Instagram of himself training at Tampines Hub and Jurong East Stadium, the latter being the home ground of Albirex.

"To build a great castle, you need a solid cornerstone. Into that cornerstone, we pour world-class experience, vision, and passion," said club chairman Daisuke Korenaga.

"Together with Keisuke Honda, we are determined to build a legacy that will carry this club forward for the next 100 years."

Friday's announcement of Honda’s signing came days after Albirex said the club would be renamed FC Jurong from next season, a deviation from their announcement in late 2025 that they would be renamed Albirex Jurong FC.

“Through extensive discussions with our stakeholders, we have come to the conclusion that the club must put down deeper roots in this region and pursue a greater level of localisation. The name change is one important expression of that commitment,” said Korenaga.

“A club's name is more than just a label - it is a statement of where we stand, who we walk alongside, and which community we are building our future with. The name FC Jurong carries our heartfelt desire to grow with this town, to be needed by this town, and to be a club this town is proud to call its own.”

Albirex, who have won the domestic league six times, currently sit third in the SPL.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Adelle Tai said the fare remains unpaid.

Court documents stated that Shalini reeked of alcohol when she boarded the victim’s taxi at around 3pm on Nov 11, 2025, and fell asleep during the ride.

When they reached her stated destination in Yishun Street 22, the driver woke her up and told her the fare was $24.

She replied that she had no cash or cashless payment methods with her, and needed to go up to her unit to get the money.

“The (driver) asked her to leave her phone in the (taxi) and go up to the unit, but she refused. (He) then suggested following her up to the unit to get the money, but the accused refused this as well,” DPP Tai said.

Shalini challenged the cabby to take her to a police station, and he did so, with her scolding him during their drive to Yishun Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) in Yishun Central.

According to court documents, she snapped photographs of the driver and his vehicle.

He did not reply to her throughout the journey, said the DPP.

Both Shalini and the driver got out of the taxi near the NPC, and she slapped his left cheek once at around 4.20pm.

She entered the NPC while a nearby police officer attended to the victim.

Shalini was arrested, and the taxi driver was given a day of medical leave after he went to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for treatment.

Urging the court to sentence Shalini to about two weeks’ jail, DPP Tai said: “The victim remained professional and non-responsive to the accused’s provocations throughout the incident, and the assault was completely unprovoked.”

The prosecutor also stressed that taxi drivers constitute a particularly vulnerable class of victims who deserve enhanced protection through deterrent sentencing.

The real police were then called in.

The woman was examined by doctors and Chetty's DNA was found on areas of her underwear, as well as in a swab on the woman's thigh.

The trial continues. Chetty is represented by Mr Mohamed Baiross from IRB Law.

If convicted of rape, he could be jailed for up to 20 years and given a fine or caning.

For personating a public servant, he could be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.

Source: CNA/ll

(Photo: CNA/Marcus Mark Ramos)

Lydia Lam
08 Oct 2025 06:05PM
(Updated: 09 Oct 2025 11:20AM)

SINGAPORE: A construction worker who was walking along a road saw a woman naked in her condominium unit and resolved to see her again as he found her attractive.

He drove to the unit the next night and climbed over a ledge onto her balcony before watching her sleep in a state of undress. He then walked into her bedroom where he touched her toes.

When the woman shouted in shock and called for help from a security guard who called the police, the man fled, but returned again another night and watched the woman for three hours.

He was finally arrested when the police saw him loitering outside on a third occasion. Court documents did not indicate which floor the unit was on.

On Wednesday (Oct 8), 41-year-old Indian national Thirupathi Mohandas was sentenced to 13 months' jail. He pleaded guilty to one count of molestation and two counts of voyeurism, with another four charges taken into consideration.

In sentencing, the judge pointed to his "predatory persistence" as well as his "sustained campaign of harassment over three days".

THE CASE
The court heard that Thirupathi was a construction worker and driver and was assigned a lorry by his company.

At about 10.30pm on Apr 29 this year, he was walking along a road when he passed a condominium unit. Details of the location were redacted from court documents because of a gag order protecting the victim's identity.

Thirupathi saw the victim, a 35-year-old American woman, who was naked in her unit through a window.

The following day, at about 11.30pm, Thirupathi drove his lorry and parked along the road near the unit.

He walked there and saw the victim naked inside. He then went to buy a drink from a vending machine before turning to the unit.

When he saw that she was still naked, he decided to enter the unit to see her.

At about 1.15am that night, after loitering outside for about an hour, Thirupathi climbed over a ledge onto the balcony of the unit after making sure there were no passers-by or traffic around.

From the balcony, Thirupathi observed the victim sleeping with her chest exposed in her bedroom for 30 to 40 minutes.

When the victim turned so that her back faced the balcony, Thirupathi opened the sliding door on the balcony and made his way into the bedroom.

He touched the victim's toes. The second time he did this, the victim kicked her blanket at him and sat up.

When she saw Thirupathi crouched at the bottom of her bed, she cursed at him and he ran out, climbing down the same ledge and fleeing.

The victim felt scared and disgusted and immediately sought help from a security guard at the condominium guardhouse, who called the police.

HE RETURNED AGAIN
Undeterred, Thirupathi returned to the condominium sometime before midnight on May 2 and loitered outside for about an hour.

At about 1.35am on May 3, he climbed onto the balcony again and stood there for three hours, looking at the woman.

She was awake this time, and wearing a short top and underwear in her bedroom.

The woman heard a sound coming from the balcony and looked through her bedroom window to see a silhouette of Thirupathi standing on the balcony.

She was alarmed and was unable to tell if it was the same person.

She waited until she could ascertain that the silhouette had moved out of view before alerting the security guards. By then, Thirupathi had climbed down from the ledge of the balcony.

Sometime before midnight the next day, Thirupathi was arrested by police officers who saw him loitering at the area outside the unit.

He admitted that he had intended to see the victim again.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ernest Chua sought 12 to 18 months' jail for Thirupathi, saying his repeated invasions of her home and body over three days were "indecent and highly invasive".

His offending may "well have gone on unabated" if he had not been arrested, he added.

The impact of the molestation of the victim's toes was substantial, said Mr Chua.

He said there was skin-to-skin contact and that while this was not made to her private parts, it was "still shocking as seen from her reaction and subsequent feelings of fear and disgust", said Mr Chua.

He said there was a pressing public interest in deterring molestation offences, as recent statistics from the police show that the second-most common physical crime in Singapore in the first half of 2025 was outrage of modesty.

Such offences most commonly occurred at residential premises.

Mr Chua added that Thirupathi had "invaded the victim's home" after stalking her and committed the offence while she was in a vulnerable state.

Thirupathi was defended by Mr Ang Boon Yaw, who adjusted his sentencing submissions a few times at the judge's clarifications.

He eventually asked for eight to 10-and-a-half months' jail, saying that his client wanted to serve his sentence and start afresh and to return to his family.

He said Thirupathi has fully acknowledged the seriousness of his offences and the distress caused to the victim, and is "deeply ashamed of his behaviour".

This was his first offence and he has cooperated fully and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, said Mr Ang.

In his mitigation submission, he said Thirupathi had "lost control of himself" but clarified when probed that he knew what he was doing.

District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said the victim was entitled to feel safe at home, and her vulnerability was also heightened as she was asleep the first time.

The second time he returned, it was highly premeditated as he knew the victim did not consent to being observed, and he was "effectively stalking her", said the judge.

She said his conduct was not a momentary lapse but a sustained campaign of harassment over three days, during which he repeatedly sought out the victim and lingered near her home.

"I cannot ignore the fact that his behaviour only ceased upon his arrest on May 4, 2025, when he was again found loitering near the victim's apartment intent on committing yet another (voyeurism) offence," she said.

For voyeurism, he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or given any combination of these punishments.

For molestation, he could have been jailed for up to three years, fined, caned, or given any combination of these penalties.

Source: CNA/ll
