Hi Peeps,

I have an interview coming next week for a Head of Department position in technical organization. My technical background is very different from the position offered.

At HoD level, most task if not all will be managerial rather than technical. However, I hope to prepare myself if ever I get asked about my technical knowledge in that field. How should I response in a subtle way that technical knowledge shouldn't matter?

Transferring money to Australia

Hi Peeps,

I'll be migrating to Australia and I plan to transfer about MYR200k to my aussie account. Other than Western Union or normal TT, is there any other financial tool that will give me best Forex rate and lower charges?

I'm tempted to open a HSBC Premier Account as they allow free transfer between accounts and better Forex rates compared to normal TT.

Laptop with internal CF Card Reader

Dell D620 HDD Cradle

I have to keep my personal files away from my company's HDD. The plan is to shut down after work and slot my own HDD in. A separate HDD cradle for the new HDD will make the task much easier.

Where can I get the cradle and how much would it cost?

Dominant Eye

Hi Guys,

Recently (not too recent I guess), I've moved from PnS to DSLR. First thing to learn is how to hold the camera and how to look through the OVF. On which eye to look through the OVF, I would suggest using the dominant eye.

I'm an avid fan of pool and archery, so I know which is my dominant eye. To determine your dominant eye, there are a few ways and the easiest would be Miles test and Porta test.

Slightly edited from Wiki for better understanding

The Porta test
The observer extends one arm, then with both eyes open use the index finger to point at a distant object. The observer then alternates closing the eyes or slowly draws the thumb/finger back to the head to determine which eye is viewing the object (i.e. the dominant eye)

The Miles test

The observer extends both arms, brings both hands together to create a small opening, then with both eyes open views a distant object through the opening. The observer then alternates closing the eyes or slowly draws opening back to the head to determine which eye is viewing the object (i.e. the dominant eye).

One thing though, since my dominant eye is my left eye, I always get smudges on my specs because my right hand is pressing on to my eye.

I see that there are many threads here bashing freshies for asking for a higher pay. I was once a freshie too. When I joined the workforce, I've negotiate for my salary and I've got it.

Knowing what's your strength and sell yourself. When the employer offers you the job, it means that you've met their requirement be it you are the best or you are the cheapest. If in the case where you are the most suited for the job, then you have a small bargaining power (don't over do it).

What's your take?

Saudi Telecom to buy Malaysia's Maxis

(7010.SE: Quote, Profile, Research), the largest Arab telecom firm by market value, has agreed to buy a majority stake in Maxis Communications (MXSC.KL: Quote, Profile, Research), Malaysia's biggest mobile operator, sources familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Saudi Telecom, which is bracing for the end of its fixed line monopoly this year, will announce the deal on Tuesday, the sources told Reuters in Riyadh. Neither could say how much the government-controlled company had agreed to pay.

A 51 percent stake in Maxis would be worth about $5.7 billion at the stock's last traded price.

"They have reached a deal with the largest shareholder in the Malaysian company," one source said.

Saudi Telecom's spokesman Qusai al-Fawaz declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

Malaysian firm Binariang, controlled by tycoon Ananda Krishnan, is the largest shareholder of Maxis. Krishnan has teamed up with other Maxis shareholders to buy the 41 percent of the company they do not own in a $4.7 billion bid that will be Southeast Asia's biggest ever buyout.

Analysts said the buyout was prompted by the huge capital demands of Maxis' overseas expansion plan, which could run into resistance from other shareholders.

Maxis is banking on its Indian and Indonesian units for subscriber growth as its Malaysian operations ramp up data services like high-speed broadband to counter intensifying competition and a mature mobile market.

The cost of building businesses in the big emerging markets of India and Indonesia, with combined populations of about 1.4 billion people, has unnerved some minority investors. Krishnan wanted to accelerate the firm's expansion. State-controlled Saudi Telecom is the only one of the five-largest Gulf Arab telecom operators that has not made foreign acquisitions, even after losing its mobile-phone monopoly in the world's biggest oil exporter in 2005.

The company said in May it aimed to get 10 percent of its revenues from operations outside Saudi Arabia by 2010.

Saudi Telecom made its smallest quarterly profit in more than two years in the first quarter as competition eroded margins.

Rival Etihad Etisalat (7020.SE: Quote, Profile, Research) was able to capture 30 percent of the market within 18 months of starting operations in May 2005.

Competition for mobiles in the largest Arab economy is set to intensify now that a consortium led by Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co. (TELE.KW: Quote, Profile, Research) has won a third mobile licence.

The government has said it will sell a second fixed-line licence this year.

Notice Period

I've seen so many people here saying that the notice period for resignation that they need to provide is unfair (3mths/6mths/even more).

I was wondering, according to Labour Law

If a person really needs to join the new company very soon, can he be missing for 3 days and automaticly no notice period is required. If it's possible, will there be any complications?

I think the company also have the rights not to sack you right (to protect their interest), even if you've been missing for 3 days.

Car Accident Thread

To sell or not to sell

My new car is coming soon, so I decided to let go my Corolla DX. I casually mentioned to my trusty mechanic and he offered me RM3000 for it.

I thought its quite fair, but I was trying to to squeeze a bit more so I mentioned, the engine is working perfectly fine, can't you offer a better price?

He said it doesn't matter, he's gonna rip it apart anyway, then my heart sank. Don't wanna get all mushy here, to put it simple, it served me well.

Shall I keep my car or sell it and never see it again?
