(Ipoh, 10th) Bus fares to and from Genting Highlands have been raised twice in just 21 days! The price of diesel has surged, impacting fares and causing another increase in fares.

Among them, the package fares departing from Taiping, Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh will increase by another RM10 starting today, soaring to RM45. The cumulative increase in 3 weeks is as high as 104.5%, almost doubling. The rapid increase has shocked passengers.

On April 8, the Ministry of Finance announced the latest fuel price ceiling, raising diesel prices in West Malaysia by 70 sen to RM6.72 per liter, effective from April 9 this year to April 15, 2026.

Due to the continued rise in diesel prices, bus operators have issued a new notice that fares will be increased again from April 10th. The round-trip package fare will be increased from RM35 to RM45; the same-day round-trip fare will be RM90, and the single-trip fare will be RM70.

Looking back at the price increase trajectory, the package ticket price for this route was adjusted from RM22 to RM35 on March 20, but unexpectedly it increased by another RM10 in less than a month, forming a rare phenomenon of "short-term consecutive jumps".

Operators explained that the main reason for the price adjustment was the continuous rise in international oil prices for several weeks, which led to a significant increase in operating costs. Unable to absorb the cost pressure, they were forced to raise bus fares.

"If oil prices continue to fluctuate, further adjustments to ticket prices cannot be ruled out. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." The announcement also left room for adjustment.

After the fare was further increased to RM45, the passengers interviewed generally reported increased pressure, and some even admitted that they would reduce the number of times they traveled there.

A 72-year-old female passenger surnamed Lin pointed out that the fare had been rising steadily in just a few weeks, from 22 to 35, and then to 45, making it even harder for her to afford.

She admitted that she used to go up the mountain almost every one or two weeks, but now she might only go once every one or two months, "because I'm afraid of the travel expenses."

She said that Genting Highlands used to be a place to kill time, but now even transportation costs have increased significantly, "It's really a bit hard to keep up with."

Another passenger said that while he understood that the operators were adjusting fares due to rising oil prices, the continuous increases in a short period of time were still difficult to adapt to.

"I feel that the fares are not stable, so I will reduce the number of trips in the future and consider sharing the fuel costs with friends."

"If a group of people go together, driving might be more cost-effective and offer more freedom."

An unnamed retired female passenger bluntly stated that the price increase has affected her lifestyle.

"It used to be a pastime, but now it's become a burden."

As fares continue to rise, it's not just the price that changes, but also the lifestyles people have taken for granted.

In Malaysia, a JPJ runner is a third-party service provider who charges a FEE to car owners and car/motorcycle/truck/bus dealers (used and new) to execute FASTER transactions involving the Road Transport Department (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan, or JPJ).

Instead of the vehicle owner handling the process themselves, a runner takes over the so-called queueing/waiting long time, documentation and submissions for a handsome fee (easy money).

In September 2023, JPJ issued a statement urging Malaysians to use the MyJPJ app and avoid using a runner.

This was obviously a ‘wayang kulit’ to show Malaysians that the department did not have any ‘under table’ working methods and it was offering Malaysians a ‘fair’ and quick system to get the JPJ documentation (vehicle transfer or registration number change) done.

Well, since September 2023, we personally have been to JPJ Petaling Jaya 4 times (to sell and buy vehicles) and we have seen almost all the same runners hard at work and even a couple of new ones at work.

Here in the pictures below you can see a runner (with the sling bag and slippers holding docs and standing to go right after the person at the counter finishes their transaction) HE IS NOT using the MyJPJ app to get a Q number and instead just cutting in at a particular (per-determined) counter.

Let us explain in full. We arrived at JPJ with the buyer of our Perodua Kelisa at 7.35 am. At 7.45 am the MyJPJ comes alive and the waiting crowd outside the door rush forward to scan the QR code to get a Q number.

We were happy as our waiting time initially was not long. With the MyJPJ app you can wait at the JPJ cafeteria, have a drink, relax and when your number gets close, go back in and wait for your turn.

But this does not happen as you think.

While waiting for our number to be called in a few minutes, the system suddenly was ‘holding’ and moving very very slowly. What should have been an hour (before 8.50 or so to reach our turn had now moved to past 11.02am.

Why? Well, as you can see, once the runners ‘turn up for work’ they come with a ‘few cases’ and they just walk up to the pre-determined counter and hand in their cases to the officer.

The officer does not even look up at them. They just take the documents and do the necessary work/transfer and they leave. This is why our MyJPJ app Q number was stagnant.

Then there are other runners, like this one in our picture (with the sling bag and slippers) who wait just outside the JPJ entrance and try and get latecomers to use their services.

Negotiations are done openly, a fee is agreed and they take the docs and go straight in to the pre-determined counter without ANY Q NUMBER and just hand in the docs.

When we took these pictures, there were a number of people sitting behind and at the side of us. One smiled, one just sighed and another smiled and said, ‘you putting this on social media?’

I asked them all to do the same, take pictures and share on social media. They all just shook their head and one said, why bother, it is the Malaysian way and will not change.

Well, readers, is it time for change?

Will JPJ take note of our article here and STOP this abuse?

Since President Joe Biden enacted the law, Intel has invested over $30 billion in its U.S.-based manufacturing facilities while receiving zero from the American government.

"We see the CHIPS Act as a critical thing that we have invested a lot of energy to," said Gelsinger. "As we said on our [earnings] call, we are disappointed by the time it is taking to get it done: it is well over two years since the CHIPS Act passed and over that period I have invested $30 billion in U.S. manufacturing and we have seen $0 from the CHIPS grants. This is taking too long, we need to get it finished."

Indeed, since the enablement of the CHIPS and Science law, Intel has started to package chips at its advanced packaging facility in New Mexico and began to construct new fabs in Arizona and Ohio. Due to lower-than-expected demand for CPUs and a very slow start of Intel Foundry as a contract chipmaker, Intel had to delay the Ohio campus launch by a couple of years, but the company did invest a lot in its facilities in the U.S. It should of course be mentioned that Intel has already received $3 billion in Secure Enclave funding for military chips.

"That said, we are working closely with the CHIPS Office, and constructively engaging with them to finish what we started," Gelsinger said. "But I also want to point out that [the CHIPS Act contains] the grants and the tax [cuts] pieces - and tax pieces are about three times larger than the grants piece of the CHIPS Act. With that, we do see that that continues [as] part of tax law at this point, so we will still see that benefit."

While Intel has been granted some $8.5 billion in direct investment, up to $11 billion in loans, and a 25% investment tax credit of up to $100 billion, it still has to see that $8.5 billion. As a result, Intel had to ensure that it could build its fabs even without direct funding from the U.S. government. As a result, Intel kicked off its Semiconductor Co-Investment Program (SCIP), which in the case of its Fab 52 and Fab 62 in Arizona means that these production facilities will be operated by Intel, but 49% co-owned by Brookfield Asset Management.

"We have made sure that we have the financial structure that allows us to finish with or without CHIPS Act dollars," said the head of Intel. "We will make sure that we execute on the strategy that we have laid out, but we do look forward to finishing what we started with the CHIPS Act, the most important piece of industrial policy legislation in the U.S. and something we proudly participate in."

THERE are plans to resettle up to 10,000 Malay families in George Town, Penang, after decades of high living costs on the island drove the households to the Prai mainland, Kedah, and Perak.

The Penang Malays Association (Pemenang) has drawn up a five-year plan to allow Malay families with diverse economic interests and professional skills to move back to the island.

Pemenang, the oldest Malay organisation in the country, has briefed Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on the proposal.

Pemenang president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff said the settlement plan is confined to the boundaries of Jalan Pattani, Jalan Perak, and Jalan Sungai Pinang, covering an area of about 40ha.

"It will be called the Malay enclave, and it will have housing and commercial areas and mosques, symbolising the Malay-Muslim identity in George Town," Yussof said.

"Wakaf land has been allocated for this purpose. It was bequeathed to the Malay Muslim community by the state Islamic Religious Council."

Pemenang aims to assist in resettling the community in the inner section of city, which has become cosmopolitan, he said.

Yussof said Pemenang is also liaising with the state Bumiputra steering council, headed by technocrat Tan Sri Khalid Ramli, to realise the resettlement aims.

On why the original Malays had migrated from the island, Yussof said multiple issues, primarily socio-economic, had driven the community out.

As Penang prospered in sectors such as services and manufacturing, the standard of living was raised to a level that was uncomfortable for a significant number of Malays.

"But we cannot pinpoint living or property costs as the main reasons. There are also other socio-economic factors."

Yussof said migration was a personal matter and it should not be tied solely to the high cost of living.

However, with land now available, Pemenang sees a chance for Malays to resettle in George Town and take advantage of the growth, he added.

He called on Bumiputra agencies, the Urban Development Authority and Penang Regional Development Authority, to work harder to ensure that economic circumstances do not force Malays out of Penang as had happened in the 1970s to the 1990s.

Malay activist Rahmad Isahak said there is no doubt that the high cost of living played a significant role in the migration of Malays over the past three decades.

"The move to resettle the Malay community back to George Town is welcome and the best effort to showcase the rich diversity of the heritage township," said Rahmad.

"History has taught us that the Malays were the pioneers in Penang. It is now only fair that they reclaim their status as the original settlers of George Town." – July 27, 2024.
