Financial Tips for New Graduates

Financial Tips For New Graduates

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

By Rosliwaty Ramly

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Each year, thousands of new graduates enter the job market. This means the beginning of a new life for these graduates who will earn a living and be financially independent.

But it's not all about earning, but also about proper financial planning and careful spending from the very start.

To help graduates head in the right direction, the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) offers some tips as outlined in its Guidebook on Personal Finance.

KNOW YOUR MONEY STATUS

Begin by knowing your financial situation once you start receiving your salary and be aware of the financial commitment that you have to fulfil.

List down all the money that you owe; this normally includes a study loan. If your study loan is either from the National Higher Education Loan Fund (PTPTN), a state foundation or the Public Service Department (PSD), take the initiative to call them up and ask about the repayment plan.

Secondly, list all the expenses that you expect to pay, including rental, phone bill, utility bills, transportation and food.

Then, list all the income you expect to receive which may include income from freelancing work.

Your nett take-home salary is the balance after the deduction of EPF contribution, SOCSO and taxes. The balance (income less expenses) should go into your savings which will come in handy when the need arises.

SET UP A MONEY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

With your balance sheet, you can set up a system for tracking your finances.

You can either invest in a money management software; or do it the conventional way with a simple notebook or diary.

The advantage of using a money management software is that it helps you set your financial goals.

For instance, the software can determine how much you will have to set aside each month and the duration you need to save to pay the downpayment for a car.

Most employers have their own preferred bank for monthly salary deposits. If the company engages more than one bank for the service, then it is wise to choose the one with on-line banking facilities. Apart from paying bills on-line, you can also easily track your expenditure.

BE CAREFUL WITH CREDIT CARDS

Due to competitive marketing, owning a credit card is easy nowadays. To qualify for one you only need to have a minimum annual income of RM18,000.

Undeniably, a credit card is convenient and perhaps essential for certain purchases.

However, if not handled properly, it can be a major contributor to personal debts. If you decide to have a credit card, shop around for credit cards that offer the best deal and be sure that you understand those terms.

GET INSURANCE COVERAGE

Most companies offer insurance policy as a benefit. Determine whether it is life or medical insurance.

If the company is offering only life insurance, for instance, you should start looking for health insurance which will ensure that you are medically covered.

The type of insurance and the sum of coverage depend on several factors. If you are starting out and single, a low-cost term life policy will suffice. But if you are married and thinking about having children or buying a home, then you should consider more options.

DECIDE WHERE TO LIVE

This is another issue that needs to be thought thoroughly as the decision can affect your career and lifestyle.

Accounting graduates who wish to live in Kuantan, for instance, may have to rule out the chance of working with well-known, big city accounting firms. They will have to be contented with working for smaller audit firms and if they have ambitious plans of climbing the corporate ladder in a big city, they will have to relocate.

Living on your own has its advantages such as privacy and freedom to do whatever you want. The downside, however, is the responsibility of paying for essentials such as utilities, rent or mortgage and food. These expenses can easily use up almost two-thirds of your salary.

One way to reduce household expenses is to share the cost with a housemate though it may encroach on your privacy. Alternatively, you can live with your parents (if they are willing to have you) to reduce your expenses. The savings can be put into a downpayment on an apartment where your monthly payment will go towards building equity.

THINK THROUGH BEFORE BUYING A CAR

Before buying a car, consider your financial ability to pay the down payment and the monthly instalment.

Contrary to popular belief, getting a car is not about prestige but about convenience. A reliable used car will suffice to serve the purpose and will not drain your finances.

However, be wary about the extra costs such as maintenance which may be more than anticipated for a used car.

START SAVING EARLY

Time is a crucial element in turning even modest savings into significant wealth.

Let's say, we start saving at the age of 25 by putting aside RM167 every month with an annual return of 11 per cent. Forty years later the savings will increase to RM1.2 million. Nice money to have upon retirement.

Now let's assume we start saving at the age of 45. Since we want to make up for lost time, we double up the savings to RM334 every month. After 20 years of savings, we will end up with slightly more than RM285,000.

In each case, we have invested RM80,000, yet doing so for twice as long produces four times as much in savings. Clearly, by starting early even small amounts can make a huge difference to your subsequent financial health.

In a nutshell, if you start saving early and regularly, avoid credit card debts and keep your costs low, you will be on your way towards financial freedom.

Always be alert about our personal finances to avoid pitfalls due to ignorance.

-- BERNAMA

http://bernama.com.my/bernama/v3/news.php?id=241978

Here I found tis news and it very interesting about it.......
