In reaction, MEPs voted on a resolution last year, urging the European Commission to phase-out the use of vegetable oils in biofuels by 2020. They also called for a single certification scheme to guarantee only sustainably produced palm oil enters the EU market.

Jose Mourinho was involved in a furious dressing-room bust-up with Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson as the Manchester derby descended into acrimony.

Sources claimed the Manchester United manager had milk and water thrown at him after the spat with Ederson.

Mourinho was thought to have gone to the door of City’s dressing room to ask their players to show more respect amid apparent disappointment over the way the Premier League leaders were celebrating their 2-1 win, as music blared from the visiting team dressing room.

But a war of words ended up breaking out at that point with Mourinho and Ederson believed to have been yelling at each other in Portuguese as a melee ensued involving players from both sides. There were even reports that Mourinho was hit on the head with a plastic water bottle, with security staff eventually forced to intervene.

The former Everton and Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Arteta, one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants, was left with blood running down his face after allegedly being cut above the eyebrow in the skirmishes, which evoked memories of the infamous Battle of the Buffet at Old Trafford in October 2004 when Sir Alex Ferguson was hit by pizza after United’s game with Arsenal turned ugly.

Eyewitnesses said that United striker Romelu Lukaku was another prominent figure in the skirmishes which spiralled out of control as police looked on from a distance.

Indonesian monkey that snapped viral selfie declared 'Person of the Year' by Peta

JAKARTA: An Indonesian monkey who shot to fame after it snapped a grinning selfie - and sparked a landmark US copyright case - was named "Person of the Year" on Wednesday (Dec 6) by the animal rights group that took on the simian's cause.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) said it was honouring Naruto, a crested black macaque with a goofy-looking grin, to recognise that "he is someone, not something".

In 2011, the monkey pressed the shutter button while staring down the lens of a camera set up by British nature photographer David Slater on the island of Sulawesi.

The photos quickly went viral and Peta launched a lawsuit that claimed the then six-year-old Naruto should be "declared the author and owner of his photograph".

Authorities and activists have been trying to persuade villagers on Sulawesi to stop consuming the critically endangered monkeys, one of many creatures that form part of the local indigenous community's diet. - AFP

Lelaki sembur muka Penguatkuasa MPSJ ditahan

SERDANG - Lelaki yang bertindak menyembur cecair ke wajah anggota penguatkuasa Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ) hingga mangsa mengalami pedih mata, sakit kepala dan sesak nafas, dalam kejadian Selasa lalu, ditahan polis di Bandar Kinrara Seksyen 5, di sini, semalam.

Ketua Polis Daerah Serdang, Asisten Komisioner Megat Mohamad Aminuddin Megat Alias berkata, lelaki berusia 50 tahun itu ditahan pasukan Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah Serdang kira-kira jam 10.30 malam.

Menurutnya, lelaki tersebut mengaku terlibat dalam insiden yang berlaku kira-kira jam 12.40 tengahari ketika mangsa menjalankan tugas mengunci tayar kereta miliknya di di Jalan Puteri ¼ , Bandar Puteri, Puchong.

“Lelaki yang tidak bekerja itu mengaku menggunakan alat penyembur yang kemudiannya dibuang ketika melarikan diri selepas kejadian,” katanya.

Menurutnya, permohonan reman terhadap suspek dibuat di Mahkamah Majistret Petaling Jaya, hari ini.

Semalam seorang anggota penguatkuasa MPSJ, Nor Safuan Nordin, 31, mengalami pedih mata, sakit kepala dan sesak nafas apabila disembur cecair dipercayai penyembur lada ketika menjalankan tugas mengunci tayar sebuah kenderaan di Bandar Puteri,di sini.

Difahamkan, mangsa, merupakan anggota penguatkuasa sama yang menjadi tular ekoran video dia ‘diserang’ seorang wanita dengan ‘steering lock’, dalam kejadian Bandar Puteri, di sini, September lalu.

Dalam kejadian kira-kira jam 12.40 tengah hari itu, Safuan dikatakan melaksanakan tugas hariannya sebelum didatangi sepasang suami isteri yang bertindak agresif dan memarahinya kerana tidak berpuas hati apabila melihat tayar keretanya dikunci.

Suami kepada wanita tersebut kemudian dikatakan menyembur cecair dipercayai penyembur lada ke arah Safuan sebelum terus melarikan diri.

KFC Sues Chinese Companies

BEIJING— Yum Brands Inc. ’s KFC is suing three companies in China for allegedly spreading rumors about the quality of its food, including that its chickens have eight legs, a move that comes as the fried-chicken company fights to regain lost ground in one of its most critical markets.

KFC said on its Chinese-language website that three Chinese media companies tarnished its image by spreading false information about its products on social media. KFC alleged in its statement that the companies spread rumors, “misleading the consumer,” on microblogs and through photos and articles that claimed its chicken had six wings and eight legs. The fast-food chain said it is requesting compensation of up to 1.5 million yuan (about $245,000) from each company, an apology and an end to the alleged practices.

The companies are Ying Chen An Zhi Chenggong Culture Communications Ltd. in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, and Wei Lu Kuang Technology and Ling Dian Technology in inland Shanxi province. The three companies couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Yum didn’t release further details about its court action, and its representatives didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

KFC cited the Chinese government’s intensified campaign to clean up what it deems rumors on social media. It is very hard for companies to protect their reputation on the Internet, KFC said.

China traded Russia 180,000 dead dogs

How many dogs do you have to kill before Russia gives you a fighter jet? 2,368.42105 is the going rate, apparently.

Researchers at the Academy of Military Sciences have revealed that one of the conditions attached to China's post-Soviet acquisition of 76 Su-27 twin-engine supermaneuverable fighter aircraft from Russia was that Beijing sweeten the deal by throwing in 10,000 dog skin coats.

Authorities in Henan and Shandong thus went about dutifully slaughtering 180,000 canines to fill the order — according to military sources, "killing all the dogs across three provinces."

The Russian economy was in dire straits at the time and the coats were requested along with flashlights and thermoses to help Russians pull through wintertime power cuts.

In the words of military academic Du Wenlong, "China's dogs made a great contribution to the modernization of the nation's air force."

Delivery of the aircraft begin in February 1991 and concluded by September 2009.

MH370: Pegawai bank, suami ditahan

KUALA LUMPUR: Seorang pegawai bank dan suaminya yang dipercayai terbabit dalam kes memindah dan mengeluarkan wang daripada akaun milik penumpang pesawat Malaysia Airlines (MAS) MH370 ditahan semalam.

Ketua Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Komersial Kuala Lumpur, ACP Izany Abd Ghani berkata pegawai bank itu yang bekerja di bank berkenaan sejak 10 tahun lalu ditahan di rumahnya di Ampang kira-kira 4 petang.

"Suaminya yang berusia 33 tahun turut ditahan di bengkel kereta di Ampang ketika membaiki keretanya. Polis percaya suaminya mungkin turut terlibat.

"Polis masih belum mendapat rakaman kamera litar tertutup (cctv) daripada pihak bank. Ia akan mengambil masa sedikit," katanya kepada Bernama dan menambah kedua-dua mereka kini ditahan di Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah Dang Wangi.

Kedua-dua mereka tidak mempunyai sebarang rekod jenayah lampau.

Izany menasihati keluarga penumpang MH370 yang pesawat itu masih belum ditemui supaya meneliti kenyataan akaun bank penumpang.

"Keluarga mereka boleh periksa kenyataan bank penumpang. Kita minta mereka berwaspada," katanya.

Rabu lepas media melaporkan sebanyak RM110,643 milik empat penumpang pesawat MH370 lesap daripada akaun bank dipercayai dipindahkan oleh kakitangan bank tanpa kebenaran.

Siasatan mendapati wang dari akaun milik penumpang dipindahkan ke akaun penumpang lain melalui perbankan Internet melibatkan jumlah keseluruhan RM110,643.

Akaun berkenaan masing-masing milik dua penumpang warga China, seorang penumpang warga Malaysia dan akaun seorang pramugara.

Kejadian disedari pada 18 Julai lepas oleh seorang petugas bank yang mengesan beberapa transaksi pengeluaran dan pemindahan secara mencurigakan dari empat akaun berkenaan.

Sementara itu, polis sedang mengesan seorang lelaki warga Pakistan yang dipercayai terlibat dalam kes pengeluaran wang daripada akaun milik mangsa pesawat MH370.

Ketua Polis Daerah Dang Wangi SAC Zainuddin Ahmad berkata lelaki yang dikenali sebagai Ali Farran berusia lingkungan 30 tahun itu yang bekerja sebagai mekanik di Pandan Indah, Ampang dikehendaki polis untuk membantu siasatan.

Alamat terakhir suspek No.2 Lorong Kemajuan 2, Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.

Zainuddin berkata hasil siasatan polis mendapati wang RM35,000 yang dilesapkan daripada akaun milik mangsa MH370 dimasukkan ke dalam akaun bank lelaki Pakistan itu.

"Polis percaya lelaki itu melarikan diri dengan wang itu berikutan tiada wang dalam akaun berkenaan.

"Siasatan masih dijalankan bagi mengetahui apakah hubungan antara pegawai bank yang ditahan semalam dengan lelaki Pakistan ini," katanya kepada Bernama di sini hari ini.

Katanya, setakat ini polis mengambil keterangan daripada enam individu termasuk pengurus bank berkenaan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified possible suspects who made unauthorised withdrawals amounting to RM111,000 from the bank accounts of four victims aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

City police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said both the police and the bank involved were conducting investigations on the matter.

"We have identified the suspects involved and are gathering more evidence before we take further action.

"Do not speculate on this matter and allow us to conduct a thorough investigation," he said when met at the police headquarters Thursday.

Meanwhile, City Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Izany Abdul Ghany explained that the suspects had transferred funds from three passengers' bank accounts into the account of a fourth passenger.

"The suspects then made an internet transfer of RM35,000 to another account, believed to be that of one of the suspects, two weeks prior to July 18 and made ATM withdrawals of RM5,000 daily until the account was empty.

"We are now trying to trace the identity of the suspect who opened that account," he said.

Flight MH370 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 and is believed to have ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

However, none of the 239 passengers and crew on board nor any remains of the plane have been found so far.

Palestinian ambassador: Better to pressure US, not boycott McDonald’s

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians shouldn’t target the workers at businesses such as McDonald’s and Starbucks in their efforts to boycott Israeli-linked companies, said Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia Dr Anwar Al Agha.

In an interview with The Star yesterday, Dr Anwar said the workers were merely trying to earn a living and it was unfair for the workers to be subjected to harassment and attacks from fellow Malaysians.

Although he admitted that it could be a way to pressure Israel to stop the aggression in Gaza, he stressed that social media posting about any company’s alleged links with Israel “cannot always be verified”.

McDonald’s and Starbucks employees have faced verbal abuse, and some restaurants were vandalised after the social media posts highlighted that the companies diverted part of their profits to support Israel.

Dr Anwar said it would be more appropriate if the people channelled their frustrations at the United States government, which has recently signed an additional US$225mil (RM718.8mil) for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system.

“It would be better if the people go and protest at the US administration and pressure them to stop funding the Israelis with sophisticated weapons,” he said.

Both McDonald’s and Starbucks Malaysia have released official statements saying that they do not support nor do they channel funds to support Israel’s aggression in Gaza.

“Our people have also broken down in tears because of threatening telephone calls,” said McDonald’s Malaysia managing director Stephen Chew on Monday.

“There were also incidents where our people were physically intimidated and publicly humiliated, and of property being vandalised,” he said. “Some were even afraid to go back to their hometowns for Hari Raya for fear of being harassed.”

In a letter to the media, he said: “Our staff in uniform have been publicly humiliated. Others were shunned by their peers when they went to the mosque.

“Even the children of our staff have been singled out in their schools, confused by warnings by some teachers not to go to McDonald’s.”

KFC sales brisk despite boycott against companies

KUALA LUMPUR: Sales continues to remain brisk at all KFC outlets, nationwide, despite the boycott against companies that are alleged to have links with Israel.

General Manager KFC Marketing Kelvin Hong Kim Hoong said the company's business was not affected by the boycott because it was a full-fledged Malaysian conglomerate owned by Johor Corporation.

"We do not support any political activities and QSR Brands (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd, which owns the master franchise for KFC and Pizza Hut, does not pay any franchise fee to Kentucky-based KFC Corporation.

It is also the master franchise for Singapore, Brunei, India and Cambodia.

"Sale of KFC products remain stable and it is business as usual for us," he told reporters after launching the company's latest KFC Tasty Travels campaign.

QSR employs 11,000 Malaysians at its KFC outlets and 7,000 employees at Pizza Hut chain restaurants.

On the campaign, Hong said sales was expected to increase by 15 per cent during its one-month promotion period.

The campaign features two items on the menu which is the KFC Bangkok Green Curry Chicken Meals and Zinger Green Curry Burger.

Three to four similar campaigns would be held by year-end which would feature different types of meals from various countries.

YTL Power tarik diri daripada projek janakuasa kontroversi

YTL Power International Bhd memutuskan untuk tidak terlibat dalam projek kontroversi janakuasa Track 4A di Johor dan berkata langkah itu bertujuan mengelak kesangsian terhadap komitmen ketelusan dan urus tadbir Putrajaya.

Bagaimanapun, pengeluar janakuasa bebas pertama negara itu berkata, sedia mengambil bahagian dalam projek tetapi meletakan syarat kompetitif jika Putrajaya mahu meneruskan projek kitaran gas gabungan 1,000 -1,400 megawatt di Johor itu.

"Kami berterima kasih kepada kerajaan kerana mempunyai keyakinan ke atas YTL Power sebagai sebahagian daripada konsortium untuk melengkapkan projek dengan pantas.

"Namun, ekoran tanggapan salah ke atas projek itu, YTL Power memutuskan untuk tidak serta dalam projek tersebut seperti yang dirancangkan untuk mengelak kesangsian terhadap komitmen ketelusan dan urus tadbir kerajaan," kata YTL Power dalam satu kenyataan, hari ini.

Semalam, The Malaysian Insider melaporkan YTL Power akan mengadakan pertemuan untuk membincangkan mengenai status penyertaan di bawah konsortium yang turut disertai SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd yang dikaitkan dengan Sultan Johor dan Tenaga Nasional Bhd, pengeluar elektrik negara.

YTL berkata, dalam surat anugerah yang diberikan oleh Suruhanjaya Tenaga bertarikh 27 Mei dihantar kepada SIPP Energy menyebut mengenai penyertaan YTL Power dan TNB sebagai ahli projek tersebut.

"Suruhanjaya Tenaga sentiasa telus terhadap syarat dalam surat anugerah yang diumumkan mereka. Tidak mengenepikan penjelasan Suruhanjaya Tenaga, bagaimanapun kebelakangan ini wujud salah faham dan orang ramai mempertikaikan mengenai cara projek itu diberikan," kata YTL Power.

YTL berkata, pihaknya sedia untuk turut serta dalam projek lain dengan syarat ia mesti diperoleh secara kompetitif dan sedia melaksanakannya mengikut tempoh yang ditetapkan.

"Kami yakin mampu untuk menawarkan kadar kompetitif seperti yang ditunjukkan dalam amalan tender yang dimerterai baru-baru ini.

Military lost $14 million of equiment in 2012

According to the latest IDF figures, 55 weapons and parts of weapons have been stolen so far this year – 17 from soldiers’ homes, 21 from various military units and eight from armories. The rest are parts of weapons stolen from a variety of other places.

The military lost equipment worth about NIS 50 million ($14 million) last year, with the figure for 2013 expected to be even higher, according to the army’s technology and logistics directorate. The losses are particularly bad because stolen equipment often winds up in the hands of criminals.

According to the IDF, Gil anti-tank missiles were stolen from a base in northern Israel this year, thousands of bullets were stolen from a bunker at Nebi Musa in the Judean Desert, and thieves attached a hose several dozen meters long to drain fuel from the Misgav base in the Negev.

The IDF says theft from bases has become increasingly bold. Thieves sneak onto bases through guarded gates and steal equipment, ammunition, iron, generators and even vehicles. According to a senior officer in the technology and logistics directorate, most thefts are carried out with cooperation from soldiers serving on the bases where the thefts occur; the idea is to sell the equipment.

Another officer, who served in the operations directorate, said the thefts were carried out by criminals who take advantage of the fact that ammunition and equipment bases are in remote locations. As a result, radar has been installed at some bases to monitor movement in bunkers and elsewhere.

The 2011 State Comptroller’s Report noted that reports by the technology and logistics directorate do not reflect all losses of equipment and weapons. According to technology and logistics, in 2007 the IDF lost equipment worth NIS 150 million, and 95 weapons.

But according to military-police figures Haaretz has obtained, 156 weapons were stolen that year. The gap between the figures stems from differences in counting methods. While technology and logistics counts the weapons whose whereabouts are unknown, the military police count the weapons stolen, even if they are found or returned to the army.

According to the latest IDF figures, 55 weapons and parts of weapons have been stolen so far this year – 17 from soldiers’ homes, 21 from various military units and eight from armories. The rest are parts of weapons stolen from a variety of other places.

The IDF takes pride in what it says is a 66 percent decline in equipment lost or stolen, based on a figure from 2007.

“After the Second Lebanon War [in 2006], people were in shock over what they saw in the emergency-store units,” said a senior officer in technology and logistics. But when reservists reported for the Gaza offensives in December 2008/January 2009 and November 2012, they saw that supplies were sufficient.

“And it was easier for them to part with what had gotten stuck to their hands,” the officer said, meaning that the soldiers didn’t feel the need to hold onto equipment for fear they would not have it when they needed it in the field.

There is now a greater awareness of theft at IDF units, the officer said, adding that “it’s a fact: The NIS 150 million has declined considerably.” Based on figures provided by the technology and logistics directorate, the value of lost equipment was about NIS 83 million in 2008 and NIS 45.5 million in 2009.

The technology and logistics directorate is planning a PR campaign in the coming year calling on civilians to return military equipment. The campaign is expected to cost NIS 1 million, so the IDF hopes that equipment worth a lot more than that will be brought back.
