I would like to know how would you be making purchasing decision for maintenance, wear and tear, accessories and etc. for the car purchased with your hard earned cash. Or even to choose the mechanics/workshops to work on your car.

How much of a homework will you do?
How do you trust the information you gathered?

Do you pay for quality parts/work done onto your car?
Do you haggle for the cheapest price for the item/work done?
Do you just look at price point, without caring the implication?
Do you make compromise, and willing to accept the quality because of your needs and the lower price you paid for?

Have you ever regretted the decision you made, because you are not informed of the limitations and worst still getting conned. Or you are one of those 'I don't care, a car is to bring me from A to B. The cheapest the better.'

Please do not limit yourself with the lubricant example below to share your thoughts. It could the car tyres, car tint, OEM suspensions, workshop experience and etc.

I felt that we need to be making decision based on source information and from good discussion topics, rather than just cherry picking of information. Cherry picking leads to making wrong decision and often times causes costly mistake/corrective action. There are discussions in this forum caught my attention and started thinking people in general are not using some sense in making decision. Instead, chosen to pursue something based on "feeling" and "assumption". Worst still, may influence others to follow suit.

I am not an expert by any means, but taking an example of choosing an engine oil for your car, we will first recognize some lubricant companies in the market:
- Large lubricant brand (i.e. Mobil, Shell, BP-Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Total, Caltex and etc.).
- Lubricant brand produced in Southeast Asia (i.e. PETRONAS, PTTEP, Petron, BHP and etc.).
- Lubricant brand produced in Asia and Middle East (i.e. Gulf, Hyundai Oil Bank, SK Lubricant, S-Oil, Penrite and etc.).
- Other lubricant produced in EU and other market (i.e. too many).

Next do some research in the internet/youtube videos and read several pinned discussion in lubricant forums, ie. bitog and lowyat to gain some basic knowledge. The decision to purchase is typically based on your needs (car needs and manufacturer specified requirement - (read your car manual!) and check the quality assurance from the company website/ specification of product and price point that you are willing to pay. We should never short change the seller/company for the product we want, as the seller will need to earn a wage for living, pay his worker, rental and etc. to maintain his company. Short changing leads to causing the company to be out of business and the brand that we want may no longer be in the market - simply because the consumer behavior wanting a product cheap. I'm sure we want our boss to pay our wage!

Taking the same example of lubricant, several price factor in producing lubricant that I found based on my research are as follow:
- Source of material: Closest refinery to the oil extracted allows companies to optimize the cost in producing lubricant. The closer the lubricant produced and sold to the market will be cheaper. In short, shorter supply chain drives the cost down and vice versa.
- Technology refinery/distillation/blended process and research in material: Larger companies tend to have more resources into the product; and produce a ‘technology advance’ oil for engine protection. Quality control in larger companies is stricter compared to small companies with simple operations.
- Certification/standards: Depends on market because of the weather and driving condition of the country, and regulation controlling emissions. Any producer with capabilities in blending and pays for the certification will be able to meet the certification/standards for engine protection.
- Packaging: Finished goods in a prefilled 1-5L container will be sold at higher price factoring filling process at the blending/filling facility, gross weight (i.e. container, box, pallet and etc.) and better quality control from the facility. Those finished goods comes in bulk form (i.e. 210L drums or 1,000L tote tank) will be sold slightly cheaper factoring lesser material/weight in shipping to local market, the filling process is at local facility, lack of infrastructure in blending/filling, worst case – manual blending/filling, didn’t pay proper wage to workers/foreigners, questionable quality control, rebranding and etc. Because packaging is done locally and enforcement can be complex/difficult, we have been seeing fake/recycled oil in the market – they just need to source the sticker and container.
- Marketing: Lubricant oil used in racing does not necessary means quality product, it is just for marketing. They sponsor the racing team and put their brands on their car to allow viewers to see that their oil is used in the car. Company pays bonus to racing team encourage them to win because its translate to “engine oil helps the racing team get #1”.
- Stocks: Business will want their stocks to move in the market. Business willing to reduce the selling price to introduce new product/brand in the market to win the heart of people, with expectation able to sell in larger quantities. Business with many old stocks will reduce the selling price to clear stocks as the quality of lubricants degrade overtime and to introduce old stocks.

Picking the example of Rektol raises some flags that we need to be aware below:
- History (https://germanglobalgroup.com/about-rektol/): The mother company no longer operates refinery/distillation. Seems just blending and filling operations. This means the company source the material from elsewhere, the more expensive/complex material used in blending drives the cost up. As a result, typically the type of lubricant is made to meet the minimum requirement for certification/standard. Finished goods for local market typically comes in bulk, due to shipping cost.
- Local facility (https://rektolmy.com/contact/): A simple check of the address with Google Street Image captured in 2020 shows that the company does not display their company brand/ business name according to the product name – this is not wrong, but just weird and perceived as avoiding tax/legal complication. The image captured in 2014 shows that there were many drums and totes move around the shop. Of course, the shop may be operated by two different companies in 2020 vs 2014. By all means, Rektol may just be a legit business and there are other factors that I'm not familiar based on my limited knowledge.

Everything legit in the market has its cost worked out because of the competitive nature of business. There is always a reason for the price the company is charging for the product. If we can't afford now, purchase later or earn more for the product that we want. If there is a reduction in price, be ready to compromise on quality as you are not paying for quality and this is totally alright as long you are aware of the limitation.

Let’s not be penny wise, pound-foolish.

Details of the complaint :
I believe Safyah is a fraudster. I bought an i7-3770k CPU from him (or her) on 15 July 2014 and we confirm the deal through online IBG transaction and postage. I have made a payment of RM500.00 to his given CIMB account (7027917111) via M2U IBG at 10.41am (hoping the transaction will go through before 5.30pm), without noticing that transfer will only go through the next business day since 15 July 2014 is a Public Holiday in KL.

So, when I checked the thread again, he has removed all the i7-3770k thread details/information. https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3289876&hl=

When I read further, I saw that he sold the same cpu to another person, namely Abg-SEM . I got suspicious and I tried calling Safyah (013-5504173), but he did not answer. I checked his other threads, to my surprise, he has removed all the details/information as well. I got very worried and contacted Abg-SEM via PM, and he said that he already made the transfer as well and he suspect we both got scammed.

I sms-ed Safyah and the following is the chronology of communication at 15 July 2014:
